Hi All,
Having an issue. When I plug my HTC Desire (GSM) into my Macbook Pro with OSX Lion, the phone charges but that's it. My Mac doesn't see the phone as an external storage device and my phone doesn't give me any USB notifications so I cannot mount the disc. Even if I use an 'enable USB storage' widget/button, I still get no joy.
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how I can fix it?
Thanks

Does the usb cable work?
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
does the sd card work with just a card reader ??? Instead of trying to mount through the phone?

Must be the cable, just moved from South Africa to Canada and must have damaged the cable somehow and not noticed!
If I use a card reader, the SD card works fine.

Howdy XDA.
Preface: Okay, I have google'd to death and tried countless things, so I am posting here now, and looking for some advice.
Scenario: My Desire was off and plugged into my Macbook, I pulled the miniUSB connector out and booted up phone.
Now: When it booted up (into Cyanogenmod7) I saw a majority of my apps (all the ones on the microSD) were missing. When I got Settings > Storage, the Mount SD Card is greyed out, and I only have the option Erase SD card.
When I put the miniUSB connector back in and try connect my Desire to my macbook, nothing, no notification in the drop down panel. I moved across to my Windows desktop to try and see if I would get different results, I was given - "One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned."
What to do now: Is there a solution to this? or is the miniUSB port dead? If it's the latter, the phone is still in warranty, but obviously it's rooted with a custom ROM. I cannot install a stock ROM or anything because of the port.
Note: I can still charge via USB perfectly, and USB debugging notification pops up.
Any advice / solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Kinda weird, I would say usb brick, but why did it hapenned.

I thinck it'll be too expensive to repair
but there's better solutions:
I use :
wifi file explorer
picme
and I don't need to synchronise with mini usb
I would say try use another USB cable? I got the original htc cable and when i plugged in, no problem regarding the "One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned". I tried another cheap retractable cable i bought off my local shop, when i plugged it in to my pc, most of the times i get the error. Therefore when charging i use the cheap cable, when for transferring stuff, htc original cable
you could copy all the stuff of sd card then make a gold card to flash the ruu then return under warrenty
how to make defy look like a usbstick to any device.
i want some kind of emulator so my defy looks like a 2gb usb stick!!
Just connect to a pc with the data cable and select memory card access when asked for the type of usb conenction, it should get detected and act like a normal pen drive.
What device are u trying to use it with?

I have a Samsung 42" plasma with USB port and it read my HDD and all my thumb-drives to play movies/Pics/musics. Never thought of trying with my Defy. Will certainly try this out today.
If the device supports mass storage host protocol then I dont see as to why it wont. My LCD recognises the defy without a problem.

well yes normal usb sicks do work. hmmm i will test it some more.
If this is possible it would be very useful. I could put a bookable ubuntu on my phone and boot pc's from that instead of carrying a pendrive everywhere.

I DID and it did not work
hmm.... maybe just a little disclaimer in case it needs to be said: when enabling USB mass storage, the only storage system that can be seen from the defy is the one on the micro SD card.
So, if you don't have one, i'm pretty sure nothing would happen even if you connect it properly

There might be some issue in the device u are trying to connect to. Even in my pc i have usb issues. Some specific pen drives just randomly wont work on my pc. Just my 2 cents.
I've got an GT-P7500, and it will not read any USB Sticks.
Using the Samsung connection kit.
tried with 15 different USB sticks, all FAT32 formatted, all sizes 1-16gb.
A friend uses a 4gb stick in a GT-P7510, i tested that one, didn't work
Other things like usb mouse works, but not usb stick.
Anyone got any suggestions ?
Wonder if there is something wrong with it.
How do you know it isn't working? What directory are you looking at? What does the notification bar show? Which connector are you using? Is USB debugging on?
Also this is more a Q/A...
I'm hoping this thread is still alive because I am having the same problem. @ajnindlo I'm using the standard Samsung USB Connector with a 8gb usb stick. I've tried with USB Debugging on & off and I get the same message. "Damaged USB" and asked me to reformat.
I am using a Mac BUT I did format the stick as a ms-dos fat format.
Please help...
Thank you
PS. I know this is more of a q&a place, didn't know where else to post and didn't find any other with this problem but here. Please redirect to correct location if you know of a solution. Thank you
Just i hace received my USB kit and it works perfectly, my USB has 16 g and i haven't do anything to work, conected and work.

I had a 32 GB sd card and it also wouldn't be detected by my Galaxy Tab. But, I plugged it into my phone, plugged my phone into the computer, formatted the sd card and when I put in my Gtab, it worked.
I got my connection kit today but its not working at all.
Got 2 adaptors 1 for sd card and 1 for usb connection they both dont work.
Got no status bar message or anything.
Do I miss something here?

one catch that I have realized is that for proper identification of the USB Stick, the tablet must be in english language.
My friend had a hard time figuring out why his tablet won't show up any notification when a USB Stick was connected, whereas mine shows the "My Files" app showing the storage folder and all the contents of the stick, joking around I told him that was because my tablet was in english and his tablet was not.
Anyway, Astro file explorer doesn't work with USB Sticks, Use ES File Explorer instead and look in /mnt/ folder for usbdrive , there should be your content.
Nope still not working. No files found.
Feels like my device doesnt support usb host.
Is that possible?

Connect the usb stick, open ES File explorer and go to /mnt/usbdrive folder, if you can't find the folder (which is not on the sdcard) you need to configure ES File explorer to get out of the sdcard directory, the usbdrive folder is always present even if you don't have any usb drive connected
I had similiar problems with my 16GB P7510. It would only recognize any of my Sandisk sticks and a brand new PNY only at 30% of the time. The only stick it was reliable with was an ancient 256MB stick I had. I worked fine with my camera.
I ended up returning it for a 32GB P7510 and have not had any problems with any of the sticks. At the time I didn't think the tablet was defective but it appears it was.

I have exact the same issue, but it's strange, some SD has this issue, some don't.
"Damaged USB"
I found a trick, but it solved my problem only once: format SD card by a digital camera (Canon powershot) , SD was now recognized by Tab10.1
Putting some extra files on it by PC ... insert SD to Tab10.1 ... same issue again :crying:
Have tried several SD formats & sizes ... notting helps
Did someone knows a solution to solve this problem

Correct ... but after a second or third time connecting same SD , issue returns
Have tried this, waiting for a while does helps time to time ... so I guess it's maybe "memory" or "kernel" (system) related.
It seems we have the same TASK14 ROM + Pershoot's kernel.
Strange things.
I made the test by unroot my device and went back to factory stock ... it look like the issue is solved for 90% ... it appears when you disconnect and reconnect to fast after the 1st disconnection .
usb not recognised
Nothing happens when i plug (several) usb sticks. /mnt/usbdrive is empty.
Any idea?
charging Problem
You must Check that Your usb Debugging is On or Not as it creates problems and this will be stopping You device from Accepting Usb Sticks..
I found that FAT 'sdCard's would mount , but that NONE of my NTFS sticks would mount
All my sticks are NTFS , so that was unacceptable.
rooted 7500 and 6800
Installed 'Paragon NTFS&FHS', from the AndroidMarket and all files now popup in 'MyFiles' when I insert the usb with the adaptor
I have the Samsung Connection Kit containing as USB and a SD adapter. The USB adapter works fine, but the SD adapter doesn't work at all. All it does is starting the TuneIn Radio app when it is connected. I uninstalled the app and now connecting the adapter has no effect at all. Any suggestions?

what capacity btw?
When you connect a pendrive, usually either of 2 things happen:
1.) shows that external storage is connected, details can be seen in settings>storage, external storage. file access needs to be done using a file manager app.
2.) shows, device power consumption error. meaning, ur pendrive consumes lot of power than the phone can provide. solution to this is to use a new pendrive or thru a externally powered usb hub.
Its of 8GB. The phone doesnt show any sign of connected pen drive and even the external storage option in "storage" is greyed out
thanks

hmm, I dont c wat is wrong, try another pendrive, prefarably of a different model or brand and of smaller capacity.
else it shud be a problem with the cable.
I had bought a general OTG cable from Ebay

You can use "StickMount" app to mount USB storage , incase your phone is not detecting the USB device. The only issues is that the app needs a rooted device. so if your mobile is rooted then you are good to go.
StickMount isnt helping either
try connecting a usb mouse and/or keyboard..
if it works, try a different pendrive, else then maybe u can blame the OTG cable or ur phone...
I made my own OTG cable using an old regular micro cable that I no longer needed. I believe you need to "jump" pin four to pin five....but you would be best researching it. I recall it being extremely easy to do, but then again I do have years of experience ripping stuff apart and putting it back together.

Also, I don't think drive size is an issue as I've connected a 2TB full size external hard-drive (the kind with a power brick) and was able to use it just fine. It was NTFS formatted so I did have to use USB OTG Helper to get it working, but it did work with no problems.
So Ive run into a strange problem. I was watching a movie last night on my nexus, the file was on my usb drive connected via otg to the nexus. Today I try to do the same and I get no reaction from Stickmount when plugging in the drive. I have no problems charging or connecting the tablet to my PC, and the drive works fine both connecting to the PC and to my smartphone with stickmount as well. I also tried DLing an app called OTG Troubleshooter to see if that would help me. When connecting the drive it tells me that OTG is detected, but that "Mass storage USB device is not detected in linux/android". Does anyone know what the problem is?
Thanks in advance

Maybe you guys are using a Kernel with OTG+Charge option? if yes the problem maybe that you have to connect the AC charger and USB device together. If you don't need the OTG+charge you should deactivate that function.
