help unlocking NAND after using unrevoked

I'm a noob at Android hacking and wanted to root my evo After a few questions to one of my friends, he pointed me towards unrevoked3. Now am stuckand don't now how to unlock the NAND and its driving me crazy. I want to be able to use roms such as damage control. Please help. Im compleatly lost.

I would ask your friend, don't think many here use unrevoked, we used the complete method from toast.
Also read through the posts in the Dev wiki.

I just rooted and unlocked last night...had a few issues. Should be around most of the evening. Where are you and what did you do?
Last night I used that unrEVOked3.1 software and then moved on to unlocking. You will need to ADB installed to do it the way I did it. This is a component of the Andoroid SDK. (You can find that from the google android site.) It is complicated and I got through it because I am old enough to have actually worked in DOS back when there were dinosaurs.
It's not impossible, there are instructions out there...but it will take effort. Hate to point you away from xda...'cause LOTs of good work here...but I followed the unlockr.com tutorial for unlocking nand.

There were a couple issues where su couldn't find the sdcard. I even did lists and saw it, but the commands failed at start. Took a mix of unplugging usb and replugging and mounting and just charging....not sure what fixed it...LOL. But I got the commands to run eventually.

toast's part 2 FTW

ok i got the evo in dec. and had it rooted using unrevoked3 i just got in to flashing roms using rom manger easy but i want to try cm7 and i dont think i can use rom manger for that one if iam wrong let me know and i just started learning about nand seems like a big headache i looked at the unlockr still just not sure about it i dont want to brick my phone if anyone has any advice help me out

You can use Rom Manager app to install CM7. In fact Rom Manager is included in CM7 Rom. Honestly I think Rom Manager was made mostly for CM Roms. Make sure you wipe data, cache and davlik before going to CM from another Rom. I never flash through Rom Manager app and always flash manually from recovery, but a lot of people do flash through Rom Manager. Good Luck.
Also just to clarify(someone correct me if I'm wrong),
I think if you used the unrevoked3 app from this thread Unrevoked to root your EVO that it also nand unlocks it too. The thread doesn't state it, but the app has been updated to work with the latest hboot, so it should work on all Evo's right now. I could be wrong, but I have used the latest Unrevoked to root all of the Evo's that I have rooted and have never had any problems with backups, restores and flashing Rom's.

and i got titanium back up for my apps but not sure how to use it i got idea of hot to use it and how can tell if my nand is unlocked or not

power off your phone then go into bootloader using power+vol. down..if you see s-off at the top the youre unlocked

If you are s-off, but still having problems with some root apps, you need to install busybox. You can do this from the "problems?" button in the bottom right of the overview screen in Titanium Backup. Then choose "get busybox".

ok so i got gb by deck but he say's in the thread that you have to flash a kernal iam not sure if the rom come's with one if it doesn't anyone have any suggestions that would go good with the rom battery is a big thing for me i dont like having to carry my chager around with me every where i go i would've posted this on the page with the rom but xda saying that i haven't posted enough to post anything there yet and yall have been really helpfull with my ignorance and i did find out that my nand was already unlocked thinks to yall

I'm Rooted, now what?

So, a Huge thanks to all those who worked on the method to get 2.2 rooted. I followed the directions and I am here, rooted. I used the Amon_Ra for my recovery back to 2.2. Now, this might be a stupid question, but What now? My phone looks the same, and I still can't remove sprint stuff. What are the next steps, I know i can install a custom "higher speed ROM", but can i just work from where i am now? I have the Superuser icon, but when i open it, i get "no apps in list" ? what do i need to install to start taking advantage of all that rooting has to offer?

Choose a new fancy ROM, download it to your SD card and use Amon to flash it. Easy as pie.
They are many great ROMs from many great developers here. Everyone has their preferences, mine is Fresh. I've never been dissapointed.

Agreed.....I can tell a big difference in speed and battery life but now what? I also can't delete any of the Sprint bloatware and I am on Baked Sense 1.6.

I don't understand: Why would you root your phone if you don't even know what it does? Not trying to be a ****; I'm just saying.
Firstly, if you rooted, all you did was revert your phone back to 2.1 so you no longer have Froyo. (edit: nevermind.....I see you want back to 2.2; I'm guessing you flashed a 2.2 stock rooted rom to your phone). The superuser app is empty because it hasn't given superuser permission to any apps that require it. If you want to see your superuser app in action, download ShootMe or screenshot from the market, and you will see the app asks for superuser permission.
I rooted my phone because I thought it was ridiculous to pay Sprint $30 a month to use the wireless tether option that was built into the Evo by HTC and which I already paid for when I purchased the phone. Now I use my root privileges to do a lot more, but my point is that I had a reason to root my phone to begin with. Download wireless tether and try it.
If you want to uninstall apps, download Titanium Back up (that's what I use anyway) and go to town removing stuff. I am not sure if the free version removes apps or not because I got the paid one from the beginning, but now that you are rooted, it is well worth the price for the premium license. You can use this app to move stuff to your SD card and free up your phone's internal memory, too. You can also back up all your apps and system data which is handy when you flash from one rom to another and you have to do a full wipe of your phone.

Some of the ROMs have all that stuff removed for you, such as Fresh.

First thing to do: Head over to the developer forum and flash Netarchy's kernel, which will uncap your FPS. Do it ASAP, DO IT NAO!!!!1!!1!1!eleven. Then come back here and tell us how amazing it is.

Thanks for all the replies! Rugedraw - i especially appreciate your indepth answer despite the fact that you are clearly somewhat annoyed by the question.
Here's the thing. The android revolution is ongoing and picking up steam. and i could talk about that all day long. Opensource, kick blackberry in the berry, and send apple back to where it was after its huge popularity boom in the 90s - struggling to overcome its fatal closed system flaw. Beyond that, I bought my Evo for 2 reasons. My 16 month son threw my blackberry into the toilet (nice work - i now appreciate it), and my tech guy at work has been raving about his rooted Droid x2. as of 10 days ago it didn't seem possible to root the 2.2 froyo, but he told be to be on the lookout. I figured this is a little like an arms race and that the sooner i rooted my phone when the method was avail. the better. (tech guy is in italy with his fiancee right now, or i would be asking him all these questions)
Soooo, it seemed to me, that in the spirit of owning an opensource device and joining the android revolution, that i should root my phone and unlock all the magic.
I'm no computer programming whiz, i dont write code, and i learned all of the terminology on this board in the last 2 days. So lost, but learning fast.
I did not root my phone for no reason. I clearly understand the utility of having superuser status (besides, most guys are wired to want that kinda thing regardless) - deleting annoying sprint apps that chew power, "re-tuning" the device to run more efficiently, and of course, free wifi tethering.
But, after completing the most excellent root method described in this forum, i found myself staring at a rooted 2.2 and wondering what the next step was. There are NO google results for "i've rooted my evo 4, now what?" so thats why i started this thread, figuring that I was not the only one in my situation
THAT enormously long winded explanation complete, I would love to aggregate the appropriate options in this thread. Method to wipe, list of Flash Roms for a rooted 2.2 EVO.

btw what does "uncap your FPS" mean?

If you did unrevoked then I would flash the latest Amon-RA recovery image. No offense to clockworkmod, amon is just my preference.
Poke around the recovery console and learn how it works.
NAND FIRST!! haha, develop that habit before you flash anything (roms, kernels, etc.), just in case
-Flash a rom that suits your needs. Read their OP's and threads to learn what they are about and what the people that use them think. I would suggest you just flash the stock rooted 2.2, play with it for a week or two to see how root works and explore what you can do with it. Also look into backup methods so you are familiar with how to preserve your stuff when you flash a different rom.
FPS = frames per second. There are kernels that will lift the 30fps cap.
Read about kernels and how to take advantage of them.

It is highly recommended that you do what he says! You'll see a major improvement in lots of areas. In case you're curious here is my setup: STOCK 2.2 w/ Netarchy kernal. I chose the stock 2.2 so that I may do with it what I like. It's very fast and very stable.

You can remove Sprint stuff, just have to spend some time and learn to use ADB. Rooting an EVO is not the same as rooting an iPhone, you can pretty much do everything you can from rooting an iPhone without even rooting Android so the difference is not that great.
Most of what you gain from rooting Android is being able to do things the carrier doesn't wan't you to do such as install free wifi tethering, remove their apps etc... You can also install others roms where they have already done this stuff for you but from what I have seen on the EVO and 2.2 battery life suffers greatly on pretty much any rom other than stock rooted so there is a lot to be gained from learning adb and just working with the stock rooted rom to remove the apps you wan't to.

I'm in the same boat. I got my new EVO on Tuesday, it was rooted an hour later. Why? Because that's how we do things! First thing for me it was important to have tethering. Work blocks damned near everything. As I learn more about the Android system I'll get more use out of root.
I was carefully paying attention to the thread and particularly bluehaze's answer. I'd like to learn more about using adb to remove sprint crap. That amazon app is always restarting itself. If there an ADB for newbs guide around here anywhere? I looked but didn't see.

There are a few things that I use which make root a necessity.
- custom ROMs provide a setup more tailored to what you are personally looking for
- using wireless tethering without being artificially limited to Sprint's commercial offering
- backups! I can boot into recovery and make a backup image of my setup at any point. That way no matter what settings I change or what ROMs I test out, I can always go right back to my stable daily driver in 5 minutes if needed.
- custom recovery and superuser allow you to install things, uninstall things, theme things, etc. Nothing worse than not being able to change something on my own device
- speed, battery, etc. via tweaked kernels. I'm using Baked Snack's ROM and kernel now and it's way faster and nicer on battery than stock

does rooting disable OTA updates?

I want to Root my Evo,but i have no idea if i will be able to get my gingerbread or even honeycomb OTA update.
i really dont know how to do manually updates,i dont know if its even hard to do.
What is a good/reliable team to get my rooting access from?

If you stay on the stock ROM you should still be able to get ota's but you might loose your root. The cooked ROMs will be updated usually before the official updates are even rolled out, and most likely tweaked and improved. I wouldn't even worry about sprints updates. As far as choosing a ROM, just read through the development forum and read what the ROM offers and the comments through the thread of users reporting bugs (if any) and opinions of performance. Baked snack, CM, and fresh seem to be the most popular and stable. Start with one of those. I used calkulin and frost, both work well too if you like vanilla Android, fresh was the only sense ROM I used and it was very nice. Its all about what look you want and customization. Thats the beauty of Android.
There are plenty of tutorials on the process, read the useful threads and links thread. Thats a good place to start. When ROMs get updated just flash over the previous unless the dev says a wipe is needed, which is rare.

I mean I love my sense. I can't go on without the beautiful widgets it comes with.
Plus the upgrade they're doing for sense is coming out soon.
But I need to know if a custom recovery is the same as a custom Rom.
I am thinking of doing Unrevoked because its the only one I know that does 2.2 root. Please give me links!

Custom recovery will either be "R.A." or "ClockworkMod." They are a little different from each other. People usually use R.A. They say that clockworkmod doesn't delete cache right, but I personally use clockwork. What a recovery is, is a menu outside the phones system that allows you to install flashable zips. It also allows you to wipe anything, format anything and create & restore nandroid back ups.
There are tons of Roms. Roms are the system of your phone. Usually flashed from the SD card.

The one thing i have seen is that if you root and use unrevoked forever then you can't accept OTA's either, i have seen this with alot of people including myself, not sure why, but you can download the OTA, but it will not upack, literally, as you start it just freeze's up within the first mintues, and no matter how many times you try, it won't take.

Hmm... I haven't heard of that but don't doubt it.
The thing is, the devs here usually get their hands on OTAs before they are rolled out, then they make them better and package them into their ROMs. I see no reason to even care about receiving OTAs at all, tbqh

Well i was reading about it and from what I gathered up.
It tells me that if you have a custom Rom you aren't able to accept OTAs,I don't wanna manually update my phone. I don't even know how.
But I need to know of a custom recovery with disable me from getting OTAs,help?
If I should use any custom recovery or any team who should I get my root from? I have a unrooted 2.2 sense.
I need a guide and video tutorial,ha.

Referring to your original post here, I wouldn't root until you are fully comfortable with getting down and dirty with your phone. You say you don't want to or even know how to manually update your phone, well that is Android 101. If you aren't fully familiar with everything that rooting entails (custom recoveries, kernels, ROMs, SU permissions) then you need to keep reading. I spent weeks reading everything I could find before I rooted my phone and I suggest doing the same so you don't potentially fark things up.
Read the wiki, read through the rooting threads in development and really try and build a full understanding of what you're doing before you make the leap.

Well I've rooted my g1 way back then. But I know its not the same concept anymore,but they really never had an update it was just 1.6 so yeah.
I just want OTAs still.

I agree with _MetalHead_ . You really need to read more on rooting, ROMS (and in the process, you'll learn about Nandroid!) before proceeding. I also spent weeks reading and then I didn't go full root - just enough to get wireless tether. Then, I read some more. There are some incredibly helpful people here as well as some incredibly rude people.
While unrevoked can get you started, learn adb and get comfortable pulling and pushing apks. Get very comfortable with Nandroid because it's going to save you.
My lessons learned are 1) NEVER accept an OTA update because it can take devs a long while to gain root, and 2) be patient and NEVER pull the battery while the Evo is doing something - like updating.

A nandroid backup can be done from the recovery screen and it essentially backs up your phone EXACTLY as it is when you run it. So if you want to change something, you nandroid backup (which includes contacts, themes, settings, everything) and if your change doesn't work out, you can boot into recovery and restore your nandroid backup.

Just did a little research. The reason why the updates won't take is because of the custom recovery. You need to flash a stock recovery in order to accept updates. It's on Unrevoked's website.
I use apk files already and unrooted.

Google is your friend. Nandroid is a way to backup and restore your phone.
I already posted the link to the wiki, that is the first place you should start. Next, read through a lot of rooting threads in the development forum here on xda. If you still have questions use the forum's search tool and use google. You gotta do the legwork.

Hey guys,
I just got my replacement phone yesterday and wanted to root, my old launch phone was rooted using toast method. I want to be fully rooted with nand unlock. Is the "how to root Android 2.2" on the development forum the best way to do this? If not what it? Thanks in advance guys.

I rooted my evo today using unrevoked. It was very simple and quick. Perfect for someone new to Android and rooting such as myself.

I rooted my EVO today using the unrEVOked3 one click method....and I'm guessing it's rooted. I tried on "several" occasions to use the shootme app when not rooted and it did not work, however it does now.
On the flip side....I can not tether, as it says I do not have root accsess. Also holding down the volume button and power button, it goes into the white screen and when I hit fastboot it "I'm guessing" scans and comes back saying 'no image found' a bunch of times and returns to the main menu.
When I tried to hit the "recovery" button it went to a blackscreen and showed a picture of my phone with an exclamation point over it. No buttons did anything....pulled the battery and all was well again.
So I went back to the unrEVOked (as I am assuming I have no recovery image on my phone - and I tried to put on on the root of my card and see if fastboot would find it....it did the same scan "no image found" and I wasn't going to try to go into recovery again, lol)...so I went back to UnrEVOked and tried that all over again with the phone pluged it, it found my phone and said pushing recovery 'clockworkmod' and then all of a sudden - failed....terminating push.
I did that twice and I now have no idea how to get a recovery onto my phone.
Could it possibly be that I am rooted and not NAND? How can one tell if they are not NAND (I have no superuser icon)
If anyone has had this issue or is way more experience in this unrevoked one click root thing.....I would much appreciate the help

I recommend against unrevoked because it seems like more problems or steps are needed to get it running smoothly.

Once you downgrade to 2.1 you can root with the 2.1 simpleroot. Then you can flash any rooted Froyo ROM you want. You do not stay at 2.1, unless you flash a 2.1 ROM.

i cannot speak for the unrevoked forever as i have not implemented it and do not plan to.
the unrevoked team has been known to put out a couple products that perhaps were not as fully tested as they should have been. but then again, this is a dev site...it's all use at ur own risk. that being said, unrevoked3 has been out for a while and seems to be ok. i have used it to root phones for friends.

There is a way to root 2.2, it's called Unrevoked. The latest version 3.21 works great. I used it to root 3 EVOs and had no problems at all. It takes 5 minutes.

So i rooted with Unrevoked3 the other day.. Note that im a noob with android. Ive only had my Evo for 2weeks. It was easier than i thought. Im running Myns warm two point two rom and ive customized launcher pro plus, its awesome. So my question is... am i fully rooted now? Cause i was told to download and install Unrevoked Forever after i used Unrevoked3???

yes. you have full root + NAND is unlocked. as per unrevoked3
you do not need to run the UnrevokedForever. i have not and do not see myself running it. if more of the devs whom i have technical respect for start recommending it, then perhaps.
you only really need if 1) you a dev and are playing around with some new update for some reason or 2) ur impatient
for example...there is a new update hitting shelves. folks that are impatient will want to load up the latest and greatest...and will often loose root. rather than wait for Myn to release their updated ROM. personally, i would suggest just waiting for Myn to update.
until you have a better feel for how things work. stick with the 'name brand' Rooted ROMs. they will be updated pretty quick. you can see how many posts some of them have...might be a good indicator of activity.

- ALWAYS read the first post all the way thru
- to copy a nandroid over to your computer once in a while. (sux if you have a nandroid from yesterday..but your phone is lost or card melted)
- backup your launcherpro settings
- something like smsbackup+ may be helpful
- titantium backup. the paid version is very much worth it if you plan to play with your build a lot. faster and easier by and far. (look into making the update.zip from within titanium as a backup option)

Rooted EVO, want to install Gingerbread... Basic ROM?

Alright, so I have honestly looked every where and read as much as I can.
I have a Rooted EVO with the stock ROM. I really want to update to Gingerbread but am very confused. I do not want to lose my rooted status and I do not want a ROM with a bunch of MODS. I just want a simple stock ROM with Gingerbread and Root access. Is this possible. I am confused by everything I read and do not want to brick my phone.
Will updating my phone with the OTA while Rooted ruin my phone? Will I be able to keep my root status?

Lol wow dude you're gonna get flammed but ya just download one of the stock roms on here there are about 4 of them posted with the new gb update from sprint. Just download and flash via recovery also update your radio, Wimax, etc its pretty easy

OMG.....Great Rom..Still has brightness bug though, can you plze fix. Battery life is great.
On a Serious Note: Is The Search button not working?
On a Side Note: The Noob video needs to be played on login to all members that dont have a post count of at least 40. Even if they signed up before the rule.

There are two different rooted versions (with very minor modifications) of the new stock Gingerbread ROM (anything with the labeled "Sense" is based on HTC's ROM's, though some of them are based on ROM's from other phones), both on the first page of threads in this forum. Look for "4.22.651.2" in the thread subject--and yes, those will keep your phone rooted and S-OFF. I believe there's a third thread with a method of updating without a flash, and yet another with minor modifications to the stock ROM (the Titanium-X ROM).
By contrast, anything that says "AOSP" is based on the Android Open Source Project, and therefore quite different from an HTC ROM, though all functions work on many of them (but there is some debate on how well the various radios work on AOSP ROM's).

I looked at the page linked above before I posted this and I read it all and still was confused. I guess I am looking for the idiots guide to doing this. I don't feel confident enough on my own.

I thought the Q&A was for other basic questions. My error.

Do you have the latest recovery installed of RA or Clockwork ?

I have clockwork i believe. I just did what I think is a nandroid backup, I went into recovery and did backup.

That's always smart so you are doing good so far. What you want to do now is download the zip file and place it on your SD card. You can download it directly on your phone if its easier for you (wifi recommended). Just follow the link posted by dodgerbluehero above and I would recommend starting with the odexed version.
Now go into recovery and choose flash from zip - then - choose zip on SD card. Navigate to the downloaded file and hit the power button to select it and again to confirm. It can take a few minutes to write the files so just leave it alone. It will tell you when it's done and you can reboot.
These instructions are from my memory but should be pretty close. You would typically want to wipe but the dev says not to worry about it if you are coming from a stock rom.

what confuses me is where it says "firmware". Do I still have to install that or just the ROM??

The firmware is optional. You can install the rom and then decide if you want to flash the radio as well afterwards.
After you flash, the first boot sometimes takes a little while. Just let it do it's thing. You will be happily surprised how easy this actually is to do.

but what benefit does it have? is the radio i have not as good?

Some people get better results with signal/3g speeds/wimax. The consensus seems to be that it varies by phone and area.
You can flash the rom without also flashing the radio and be just fine. Stop worrying and take the leap.
On the other hand this may not be for you.

Well I appreciate the time you spent explaining it. I just don't have the money to buy a new phone if I brick it. I rooted my phone on my own but never did any rom updates. I am going to try it once it downloads. Thank you again.

Oh one more thing, be sure that your phone has plenty of charge to make it through the flash and restart or that could lead to bricking your phone.

Agreed, at this point in the game, that's about the only way to brick your phone. It's one of my personal favorite little jokes when clockworkmod asks me are you sure? This cannot be undone! Darn near everything can be fixed thanks to this awesome community!

Thanks to everyone for keeping this going it has helped me so much. One quick question I have installed the ROM and the firmware but I see in the apps things like the blockbuster app and wanted to remove it. I cant seem to uninstall it so I thought it wasn't rooted properly. I tried using Unrevoked3 on it but it failed stating
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
am I forgetting something simple or do I have to try and downgrade the firmware?

I think I recall seeing something about that error on the unrevoked website. I'm out and about right now but I'll check on it when I get home, but in the meantime if you wanna do some digging, I'd start there
