Help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently unrooted my gingerbread EVO to get a speaker replacements and when I try to run revolutionary now its says I'm already s off but in bootloader it says I'm not. Wtf?

Do you have a custom recovery installed? Amon_Ra gives you the option to toggle signature verification which is s-off and s-on
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

No I had clockworkmod and now every time I try to re root it say I'm already s off and I ran root checker and still not rooted
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Turn the phone off. Pull the battery, put it back in. Hold power + volume-down buttons. Hold it for several seconds. A screen will come up. Top line, does it say S-On or S-Off?
If it says S-Off, then you can flash custom recoveries (I highly suggest Amon Ra) and flash ROMs and kernels. If you want to stay stock, there is a Superuser.zip around somewhere

mine says s-on . i unrooted using this method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235940.

What is your hboot version?

Look im not trying to be mean but searching is usually your best bet. I am willing to bet your answer can be found in the first 4 pages of this forum. Try searching ENG Bootloader .

I believe the unrevoked forever does that for you but you have to select it.
from www.unrevoked.com
unrevoked forever is a tool to set your Android phone's security level to S-OFF. The security level is a flag stored on the radio; when the flag is S-OFF, the bootloader (HBOOT) will no longer check the signatures of firmware images before flashing them. This allows custom firmware images to be uploaded, including unsigned boot, recovery, splash1, and hboot images (as well as official images that have been modified). When the system is S-OFF, the NAND flash memory protection is also reduced; this allows all partitions (including /system) to be written to while the operating system is booted.
Great response REM

What are you trying to do, could you be more specific? Unrevoked gives you unlocked nand, so i'm not sure what problem your running into?
I used unrevoked..tried to install cyanogen n I get a error message
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
are you sure unrevoked worked, sometimes you have to do it a couple times....do you have superuser permissions? I would make sure unrevoked is correctly installed...also redownload your rom and make sure the download is completed successfully, i never dl to phone, always to pc...
I have superuser..I used unrevoked
should I use unrevoked forever

Boot the phone into bootloader and you should see S-ON or S-OFF. If you see S-OFF you have nand unlocked.

Yes, that is what I said earlier a couple posts up.
Ya can't flash cm6 directly from unrevoked you need eng boot and amon recovery to flash it. You are most likely nand unlocked but trying to flash through clockwork. Easy fix is download Rom manager from marketplace then choose change recovery or whatever it says. I haven't looked at it for aong time then choose amon ra recovery. Then do another nand backup because clockwork and amon don't really work together. Then you should be able to flash cm6 no problem. Though having already done this I would personally suggest vaelpak over cm6 its almost all aosp and everything on your phone will still be functional. Plus its just as snappy as cm6 and I seem to get a far greater battery life with it.

If you want to be able to install CM6 you need the ENG Bootloader.

It's says s off..but I don't have anon ra..I'm using clockwork..what should I do
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
clockwork is just fine....go to that guide i gave you, downlaod the pc36img.zip image and follow those instruction, it will give you eng boot........and then clash vaelpak rom...or cm6
just follow that link to that guide, scroll to the bottom and follow...its easy as pie...
When I get home ill give it a try..thank u

I followed your guide again n was successful and was able to flash gapps.but still getting an error flashing cyanogen..wat am I doing wrong

So you turn it off and it will get stuck in fastboot? Okay so you can't go to your homescreen or anything?

You can't select recovery from the fastboot menu by pushing up or down on the volume bar?
edit: maybe the battery is bad???
Or maybe a defective/stuck volume down button?
And you also said you since got it booting but then said you can't do anything but get into fastboot? Does that mean you didn't actually get it booting? And if you did get it booting at some point, how?
I got it to boot up with ruu but always says error 156 then phone will boot up. I was able to perm root with s off and flash clockwork mod. Then flashed the rooted deodexed ota. But if i turn phone off it goes straight into fastboot and cant choose anything. Buttons dont work. I do have adb.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
i'm still confused here..
HOW did you get the rom flashed, CAN YOU BOOT TO RECOVERY?
I can get into clockwork mod recovery
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The buttons all work fine when phone is on.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
but i thought you couldnt get the phone on....
okay so, everytime you do WHAT the phone boots into fastboot mode? everytime you reboot from recovery? every time you reboot from a rom? every time you pull out the battery and put it back in.
PLEASE BE AS DETAILED AS POSSIBLE
When are the errors you are seeign showing up? are they in recovery/fastboot? can you flash roms from recovery? what happens when you reboot it from there etc....
When you turn the phone off, pull battery, or phone dies it wont turn on. If i use piwer button It goes into fastboot and no buttons will work. I get it to boot with either adb or when i plug in the charger i dobt press anything and clock work mod will come up and and let me reboot. It reboots fine uf i use reboot. I have cm6 installed on it now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I can get it on now. Is there a way to fix it?

[Q] Need help to go back rooted my evo

hi i just unroot my evo to take the phone to the Sprint store but now icant gio back to rooted my evo, i cant go to the bootloader to root and install a custom rom....what i can do???
You can't get into the bootloader? You probably have fastboot enabled. Turn fastboot off or pull the battery, then try again.
If you're still s-off, you can flash a recovery as PC36IMG through hboot and then flash whatever you want. If you're s-on, what you'll need to do depends on your hboot version. If you're on 2.10 or lower, use unrevoked. If you're on 2.15 or 2.16 you'll need to run revolutionary to gain s-off, then flash a recovery and either a custom rom or Superuser to root the stock rom. If you're on 6.17 (from unrooting revolutionary), you'll need to run the latest RUU and then you'll have hboot 2.16. You can then follow the directions for rooting 2.16

Unrooted, returned to stock, to it to Sprint and they say I have basic root???

My phone wouldn't charge the last couple days so I Unrooted and returned to stock, s-on. I used a PC36IMG to return to stock. I took the phone to Sprint and somehow it started working again. They said it wasn't the charging port and it wasn't the charger or battery. I also have 2 different chargers and 2 different batteries of my own I tried. Anyways they gave me the phone back and told me to give it a couple days to see if I have any more problems, he didn't do anything but it started charging again somehow. Anyways before I left he said it is rooted still, even though I thought I Unrooted, s-on and return to stock. Superuser is not installed. How can this be possible???
PS I rooted with revolutionary

Which HBOOT do you have? If it were the Revolutionary one it may have tipped him off. Also check your SD card. I've seen them go to Market and look at purchased apps and see if root apps were bought, so don't sync with Google. Run an RUU for good measure, take put the SD card and go back
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
He also said to bring it back if it has any problems. I didn't think he would say that if he thinks it's rooted. Thanks man.

I would just let them know that any root apps that are synced to my Google account are for a tablet at home, an older phone, or some other BS.
To my understanding; if you take the stuff off your SD card, running Stock and have S-ON, there's really no way they could prove that you were rooted.
It's all about covering your tracks.

The 6.17 hboot is what tipped him off. Stock hboot only goes up to 2.16, Revolutionary gives you a s-off'ed 6.16 hboot. Getting s-on with Revolutionary involves flashing the 6.17 hboot (which isn't stock) which is s-on. If you run the RUU for the latest update, you should get the 2.16 hboot back. You'll need it to re-run Revolutionary.

It's not hard. Just follow the "Guide Below for v2.3.3 builds 4.24/4.53/4.54 softwares to ROOT and unROOT revolutionary method" on his page. You will just need to run 2 PC36IMG.zip files from the SD card.
You don't need RECOVERY.
