upgrading to 2.3 and getting root - Desire General

So my girlfriend got the desire and I want to upgrade it to gingerbread for her but I also want to get it rooted to remove the preinstalled rubbish. How can I do this? She is currently on 2.1 and all the guides I read are so confusing. There are so much different ways and all require to be downgraded.
What is the easiest way? to upgrade and have root.

Gingerbreak might work on desire (gingerbreak is a app just Google it) isn't there a way to root your phone now then install a gingerbread Rom? If not then command prompt/terminal is the way to go

Use search!!!

well thats so helpful. I did use search and lots of different irelevant threads come up.

Then you failed with searching: http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=90145642

Follow this to root. Once rooted, flash a good custom ROM with Gingerbread. I would suggest CyanogenMod 7.

what about (apart from searching and also using the big video guide on the dev section - also linked in my sig for ease) - update to the gingerbread version from htc, then run revolutionary.io to s-off, and custom recovery, then flash a new rom with the junk removed...
depends if you want to give her something iphone like - MIUI, stock, cyanogen, or sense based, insertcoin/coolaces/coolbravos
you can optionally remove apps that you don't want at the same time with any of the above by either using rom editor app (find it in the general section) or removing them from the .zip yourself.

Just wondering what Unrevoked is?? :)

Hey,
All im wondering is what http://unrevoked.com/ is?? i know it says easy root but what exactly does it do??
Thanks
it flashes the clockworkmod recovery into your phone and that way you don't need a pc or the shortcuts we were using so far to enter a recovery that enables us to flash new roms etc...and i think this way you can backup your ext partition on sdcard (haven't tried it yet)
Isn't it for the Evo and Sprint Hero only anyway?
Regards,
Dave
No if you head over to the www.unrevoked.com/recovery it says its also for the desire ... Has anyone tried this on the desire??

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709146
apparently lots of people have
Basically, once you root your handset and you want to try out a new rom you used to have to connect your phone to a pc and push the recovery files to be able to do anything.
Then cloclworkmod recovery was written that allowed the recovery files to be stored and started from the SD card, therefore removing the dependancy on a pc to push the files.
Now this new one, unrevoked, flashes the recovery files directly to the recovery section on your phone. No need for a PC and no dependancy on the files being on the SD card. So now, once you flash this, you simply reboot your phone with the volume button held down. Wait a few seconds then scroll ro 'recovery' with the volume button, then press the power button. This takes you directly to recovery menu that allows you to backup your current rom, flash new roms, wipe your cache etc.
So it doesnt root my phone for me??

No, you must have root already

NO! You have to be rooted to use it. Rooting is very easy though.

Lol I was the same, and I did brick my first one. The infamous usb brick. BUT, and it's a big but... That is no longer a problem with the new methods. Even if you did somehow manage to brick it, it can be fixed!
If you read the guides and follow them you will have a nicely rooted phone and any number of custom roms at your disposal. I don't think I could live with a stock desire now
whats the best guide to use?? and whats the difference between stock and rooted rom??
Thanks
The guide on modaco is probably the most recent one to use. it's called risk free root or something.
The difference between stock and rooted is quite big. Stock is just that, what HTC decides to give you. Once you root you can put on any desire rom available in the dev section here. They include experimental roms for froyo, loads of 2.1 roms. 2.1 is what you are on now. The 2.1 roms are tweaked to give better battery life, nicer looks, more features etc. Also on a rooted rom you can use apps like titanium backup which will backup all your apps and their info. Market enabler is an app that allows you to buy apps if you are in a country not yet supported by the market. Setcpu can be used to overclock the processor. Any new updated roms that HTC release will usually be tweaked and availaible to you well before the official release.
These are only a few advantages to using a rooted rom. Have a wee look in the development forum for the desire and see what is available.

Ripping/backing up stock Rom before root

I got a brand new desire phone recently. some how I was lucky enough to get an imported phone with a local licence, how that happened I have no idea.
The thing is I love the current stock Rom I have because it has certain discontinued apps I've been trying to hunt down + the market app which hasn't been licensed in this region yet.
I still want to have root access to my phone. How do I rip the current Rom and root my phone with it? I also want to try and port it over to my old Legend and customize it a bit.
I would also be happy to provide it publicly here or on the shipped roms website if I'm successful. The phone is unbranded and unlocked so there should be no legal issues with HTC or network carriers.

You can't backup BEFORE rooting but you can AFTER - once you've got your custom recovery on the handset you can use it to perform a backup of your phone as it is onto the SD card so should anything go wrong you can just restore it.
However, you might wanna look at the app I've attached to this reply - it can be used to backup apps to your SD card and doesn't need root. That way you can always reinstall them on newer ROM versions that don't have it
(To install it, extract the file from the ZIP and copy it to your sd card...then open a file manager and install using that)
Thanks, I'll give that app a try. But still there must be some kind of way to rip an image of the Rom? I'm going to need the image as backup and I want port that Rom over to the Legend if possible.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Without root you simply can't do it as you don't have access to the /system partition
ok i'm a bit confused now, doesn't the root process already include flashing a custom ROM? so if i root the phone so i can access my stock ROM i'm gonna lose it either way becase of the rooting?
if thats the case then how do stock roms even exist publicly? sort of like which came first, the chicken or the egg?
i might be wrong but this is what i understood from the UnrEVOked rooting tutorials i read
Rooting doesnt involve a flash now, so once rooted u can backup the stock, rooted ROM. Then u can flash a custom ROM
Sent from my HTC Desire
This applies to unrEVOked too right?
Thank you so much for bearing with me
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes. If u root using unrEVOked it only roots the phone. U can then do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM

Unrevoked dose flash
It flashes a recovery image
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
But it doesn't flash a new ROM so you can back up your existing one before flashing a new one
just to make sure i've been going through some tutorials again and they eventually led me to rootmydroid.com where i asked them about this issue. i got this answer:
"unrEVOked flashes a custom recovery image that is different from the stock one.
If you don’t want this maybe you should try VISIONary (google it)"
I did google VISIONary and it seems to be an app you can install on your phone and root it right on the spot, however going through the comments it doesn't seem to work on the Desire. I'm gonna test it myself on both the Desire and Legend and see if it works. i'll post back here with the results. if i got it working and managed to rip the rom i'll write a guide, i know its simple but it took me quite some searching and reading to get to this point.
VISIONary is an app developed by Paul/Modaco if anyone is wondering
A lot easier to just use unrEVOked - VISIONary was developed for the Desire HD
VISONary worked like a charm for the Legend, MUCH easier than the complex tutorial over at the Legend forums, but the downside is i have to work harder to get a backup whereas if I had rooted using other methods a recovery tool like nandroid would've been automatically installed. now although its rooted i'm still searching for a way to backup the legend.
VISIONary doesn't support the Desire so unrEVOked is the only way to go.
also i seem to have gotten 2 things confused: Recovery and ROM. after quite some reading let me see if i've got down the differences right.
when you say unrEVOked flashes a custom recovery it means it changes the default recovery mode to a custom one like say NANDroid or AmonRA which gives you the option to back up your ROM, correct? the ROM is an image of the OS itself which you can backup/restore with a recovery.
confusing those two made me run around in circles for a while but thanks to that i've learned quite a lot. I'm gonna try unrEVOked on my Desire and search for a way to backup the Legend, i'll ask around on the Legend forum and see where that goes.
i'll post back my results with the Desire here.
thanks Eddy

OR
In short, download the RUU you require (if you had to downgrade to root then use the same RUU) then use HTC Sync to push it to your phone (again, HTC site has good instructions).

so its really possible to update Android 2.3 OTA on rooted DHD, right?
Means rooted phone cannot update Android 2.3 OTA.
OR may be is there any way to update manually Android 2.3 on rooted phone? hehe
To do manually follow any of the threads in development forum.

but remember, you wont be able to use any apps that require root access, as the latest GB rom from HTC hasn't been rooted, so BEWARE!!!!!!!
if you need, you can go for any GB ROM from here, which provide you full access to root & superuser, etc.
Try using visionary
I know there's a unroot function on it, but never used it. Probarly someone else did, maybe search the forum

Best way to root HTC DZ?

Hi im somewhat of a newbie and ive been reading many guides on rooting the htc desire z but im wondering which way to root is the best for my phone which is the bell htc desire z running firmware version 1.84. Mainly i see 2 meathods, visionary and gfree. Also what is the chance that i will brick my phone?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
gfree http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
This question gets asked at least once a week if not more.
The consensus is that this is the safest, most consistent, and up-to-date method (gfree, NO visionary)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Plus you get all the support from #g2root @ freenode IRC
Thanks but have alot of people gotten bricks with this meathod

Also one quick question. It says i need to downgrade to 1.34. I have 1.84 so what features will i lose when downgrading. And can i upgrade again after root?

no.. unless you're one of the unlucky ones with the bad batch of emmc chips that fails to initialize. that's more a hardware issue than a rooting issue, though, and not something to worry about. you might do well for yourself reading this thread in regards to /cache mounting errors.

the downgrade is only done temporarily for the rooting process. after you've rooted, you can upgrade to a custom rom built from 1.84 (or any other firmware version) and get all of the functionality back and then some. I'm not sure what fixes were addressed between 1.34 and 1.84 as I am a G2 owner, but regardless, once you're s-off, you can use any firmware version you'd like that is supported by the DZ.
Thanks!!!!!!
last quick questions. when im rooted. i want to install the sense 3.0 virtuous fusion rom on my phone. do i need any prerequisite items such as gingerbread rom installed on my phone or not?
Also finally, htc is releasing the gingerbread update for DZ/G2 in the next few days so if i upgrade to gingerbread, will the rooting process still work?

Nope, you can go from any ROM to Virtuous Fusion. Flashing a ROM wipes the old ROM, so it doesn't matter what was there before.

[Q] Rooting Desire Z, gingerbread stock

Lately there was stock update from Froyo to Gingerbread in HTC Desire Z. I have 'clean way' rooted Z myself, but my wife has stock ROM and would be insterested in rooting, but yet retaining her current setup.
My "noob question" is (tried to use search without results), is it possible to root this phone with these:
Android version 2.3.3
HTC Sense 2.1
Core 2.6.35.10 [email protected] #1
Build 2.42.405.2
Software 2.42.405.2
...with retaining the stock ROM and everything with it? I managed to do clean root tutorial to step where it should be temp rooted, but Terminal Emulator just frosed.
Any help, answers?
If the device was updated from froyo to gingerbread via OTA you can't root yet

I join the question, how do I install a custom rom then?
I would also love if someone manage to root and s-off it

Hello, sorry if I use your topic but I know it's worse to open a new one
I have a rooted and s-offed DZ (baseband 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M and kernel 2.6.32.21). What should I do in order to update to gingerbread without losing root and s-off? Is there a stock 2.3.3 rom already available?
Thanks
Gingerbread has been temp-rooted. There's a guide here
After temp-root and downgrade you can s-off and install clockwork mod recovery, which lets you flash new roms, which can be found in the development sub-forum

you link is for g2 which don't include sense. does it also work for sense gingerbread firmware?

You won't be able to do much with temproot, you definetly can't overclock because that requires a different kernel to be installed. My advice is, if your gonna take the time to temproot then spend the extra 15 minutes getting perm-root (gfree) and watch your DZ grow wings. It seriously takes longer to download the software than the actual process does, and it's easily reversible should you have to send your phone in for any reason.
