Lately there was stock update from Froyo to Gingerbread in HTC Desire Z. I have 'clean way' rooted Z myself, but my wife has stock ROM and would be insterested in rooting, but yet retaining her current setup.
My "noob question" is (tried to use search without results), is it possible to root this phone with these:
Android version 2.3.3
HTC Sense 2.1
Core 2.6.35.10 [email protected] #1
Build 2.42.405.2
Software 2.42.405.2
...with retaining the stock ROM and everything with it? I managed to do clean root tutorial to step where it should be temp rooted, but Terminal Emulator just frosed.
Any help, answers?
If the device was updated from froyo to gingerbread via OTA you can't root yet

I join the question, how do I install a custom rom then?
I would also love if someone manage to root and s-off it

Hello, sorry if I use your topic but I know it's worse to open a new one
I have a rooted and s-offed DZ (baseband 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M and kernel 2.6.32.21). What should I do in order to update to gingerbread without losing root and s-off? Is there a stock 2.3.3 rom already available?
Thanks
Gingerbread has been temp-rooted. There's a guide here
After temp-root and downgrade you can s-off and install clockwork mod recovery, which lets you flash new roms, which can be found in the development sub-forum

you link is for g2 which don't include sense. does it also work for sense gingerbread firmware?

Since I cant comment on the thread you linked to (here) I'll ask you here, can I use that guide to temp root just once in awhile to use things such as overclocking?

You won't be able to do much with temproot, you definetly can't overclock because that requires a different kernel to be installed. My advice is, if your gonna take the time to temproot then spend the extra 15 minutes getting perm-root (gfree) and watch your DZ grow wings. It seriously takes longer to download the software than the actual process does, and it's easily reversible should you have to send your phone in for any reason.

OR
In short, download the RUU you require (if you had to downgrade to root then use the same RUU) then use HTC Sync to push it to your phone (again, HTC site has good instructions).

but remember, you wont be able to use any apps that require root access, as the latest GB rom from HTC hasn't been rooted, so BEWARE!!!!!!!
if you need, you can go for any GB ROM from here, which provide you full access to root & superuser, etc.
Try using visionary
I know there's a unroot function on it, but never used it. Probarly someone else did, maybe search the forum
Hi im somewhat of a newbie and ive been reading many guides on rooting the htc desire z but im wondering which way to root is the best for my phone which is the bell htc desire z running firmware version 1.84. Mainly i see 2 meathods, visionary and gfree. Also what is the chance that i will brick my phone?

gfree http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
This question gets asked at least once a week if not more.
The consensus is that this is the safest, most consistent, and up-to-date method (gfree, NO visionary)

Thanks but have alot of people gotten bricks with this meathod

Also one quick question. It says i need to downgrade to 1.34. I have 1.84 so what features will i lose when downgrading. And can i upgrade again after root?

no.. unless you're one of the unlucky ones with the bad batch of emmc chips that fails to initialize. that's more a hardware issue than a rooting issue, though, and not something to worry about. you might do well for yourself reading this thread in regards to /cache mounting errors.

the downgrade is only done temporarily for the rooting process. after you've rooted, you can upgrade to a custom rom built from 1.84 (or any other firmware version) and get all of the functionality back and then some. I'm not sure what fixes were addressed between 1.34 and 1.84 as I am a G2 owner, but regardless, once you're s-off, you can use any firmware version you'd like that is supported by the DZ.
Thanks!!!!!!
last quick questions. when im rooted. i want to install the sense 3.0 virtuous fusion rom on my phone. do i need any prerequisite items such as gingerbread rom installed on my phone or not?
Also finally, htc is releasing the gingerbread update for DZ/G2 in the next few days so if i upgrade to gingerbread, will the rooting process still work?

Nope, you can go from any ROM to Virtuous Fusion. Flashing a ROM wipes the old ROM, so it doesn't matter what was there before.
Hey guys, i've searched the forums and can't find the root method for 2.2.1 for the Incredible 2. Anyone have a link / guide / downloads on how to do so? Thanks in advance!
http://revolutionary.io/

Tried that, doesn't work. It gets root, but when it comes to S-OFF, it fails. (Watching the Bootloader, when it reboots, it doesn't get S-OFF and the Rev tool fails)
Im pretty sure you have to upgrade to GB. They removed the exploit for froyo.
Phone has a bad ESN, is there a way to upgrade without root?
Yes run the official ruu from bootloader

You are my new hero. This worked flawlessly. Found the US Release of 2.3.3 on RootzWiki, and flashed it via H-BOOT. Was able to use the revolutionary tool to root after that.
glad to help
where is the offical 2.3.3 release?
How do I flash just with turning hboot? and where is this file, i just picked up a INC2 and it had 2.2.1
Here you go
http://www.filefactory.com/file/ccf....01.0622_NV_VZW1.92_release_199487_signed.exe
You will need to install the htc drivers from unrevovked site too.
Now you can get root.

Hello, can you give me a more detailed explanation please? I have 2.2.1, and what rom do you recomend?

Try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751796
I haven't kept up to date with it, but a lot of info on there, this thread is really out-dated.
After rooting, if you like Sense - go to Mac's Ascension Oblivion or Viper (or even Skyraider Zeus - Gingerbread if you can find a link). For AOSP, try chillybean's multitude of Jellybean roms or unofficial CM7 (by Nitsua).
So my girlfriend got the desire and I want to upgrade it to gingerbread for her but I also want to get it rooted to remove the preinstalled rubbish. How can I do this? She is currently on 2.1 and all the guides I read are so confusing. There are so much different ways and all require to be downgraded.
What is the easiest way? to upgrade and have root.
Gingerbreak might work on desire (gingerbreak is a app just Google it) isn't there a way to root your phone now then install a gingerbread Rom? If not then command prompt/terminal is the way to go

Use search!!!
well thats so helpful. I did use search and lots of different irelevant threads come up.
Then you failed with searching: http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=90145642
Follow this to root. Once rooted, flash a good custom ROM with Gingerbread. I would suggest CyanogenMod 7.
what about (apart from searching and also using the big video guide on the dev section - also linked in my sig for ease) - update to the gingerbread version from htc, then run revolutionary.io to s-off, and custom recovery, then flash a new rom with the junk removed...
depends if you want to give her something iphone like - MIUI, stock, cyanogen, or sense based, insertcoin/coolaces/coolbravos
you can optionally remove apps that you don't want at the same time with any of the above by either using rom editor app (find it in the general section) or removing them from the .zip yourself.
I had tried to root wildfire who was updated to 2.2. Now I had tried to root the phone. And near to the end there writes
Error:failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
Does that mean that is impossible to root wildfire while hi is on 2.2 version and I must downgrade it to 2.1 version to root phone?
And how will I downgrade it?
And can I upgrade it again after downgrading.
Sorry for my bed grammar, and please help me.
Did you use the unrevoked method to root your phone? Cause it is a method rooting only 2.1 devices. Check out revolutionary.io where you should find all the guide to root your 2.2.1 phone.

I have rooted my phone, can I update phone to 2.2 again?
Did you use revolutionary method? It gives you s-off, and the ability to flash a custom recovery. It does not upgrade-downgrade your ansroid version. Go to settings, about phone, and there you can see your android version. Hypothetically, without flashing a new rom, like cm7, you are still on sense, so nothing has changed except the fact you have root access, which you can find out installing titanium backup from the market.
Have a happy new year with your new rooted phone.

I actually can't tell you which the best rom is, you have to see for yourself. I love cm7, though i've tried many roms with or without sense. Flash them, try them, and choose the one that suits you. Check this thread out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318&highlight=roms
