[Q] Just rooted my EVO 4G... What do? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have just rooted my evo 4g and I have no idea what rom to install, or even kernel. Pretty new to rooting androids. I have been told to get Rom Manager, what are your views on this app? Is it easy, and reliable? Thanks for all and any help.

MikG. Go for it. Stick with the stock kernel until a super stable Sbc one drops.
As for ROM manager, I find it best to flash things on your own. If you haven't, flash amon ra recovery. Then flash all.your ROM, mods, and kernels through recovery. I am not saying ROM manager is a bad tool because peeps use it and apparently it works, but I prefer manual flashing and have find it more consistent that way.

What do I do now?

Okay, first timer here and I have a few questions. I just completed rooting my phone via Simple Root. My build number is now 1.17.651.1.
My questions are as follows:
1) Now that I am rooted, what installation files can I delete from my SD Card?
2) I see that I need to do a recovery flash, do I do this immediately? What one do you recommend?
3) After I do the flash, are there any others files I need to install before I do a custom rom?
4) Which custom rom do you recommend?
5) Am I leaving anything else out that I forgot?
Thank you so much in advance!

After you have rooted you can delete nearly anything you want, I wouldn't suggest doing it because I doubt you know what to do. But you do have the freedom to..
I would suggest you flash a recovery as soon as possible. It makes life easier. The two most common recovery are Amon Ra And clockwork.. I use amon Ra just because it had a better wipe feature but clockwork is used in rom manAger (look in to it).
After rooting you can look into upgrading your radio and your wimax and your kernal.
Custom roms are like sneakers, They all have different purpose and size. The most common ones are damagedcontrol and fresh. Do your research and experiment and find your sneaker. You can also just wait til the official stable cm6 comes out. For now I use fresh.
Try oUt some themes and different apps that are for rooted devices only. And there us always something neiw to do with your evo.

I am in the same boat as OP. I managed to make my way through SimpleRoot. But I am having a heck of a time digging through the forums to figure out what to do next. I feel like kind of an idiot, but I have no idea how to set up my backup/recovery "amon ra" right? And then I'd like to install the rooted 1.47 build and update my radio and wimax. Any direction would be VERY appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. Mind pointing me in the right direction for the radio kernel and wimax?
I'm new to this too. Read up a lot first. Easy root looks to make it pretty easy, but I learned more doing it the hard way. Used the two part method in dev section, by toast I think, with adb, nand unlock and all. Helps to understand the odd file structure, and what different parts do. You have to try things too, and just hope you don't f up. Using cm6 now and its pretty cool. Have fun man.

Liked he said read. And do a lot of it. Last thing you want is to brick your phone

What's wrong with Clockwork's wipe feature?

Also, as for flashing a recovery, if you install ROM Manager from the market, it will give you an option to flash either Clockwork or Amon RA. It will stay there even if you flash new ROMs later, though there's a quirk where a new ROM Manager install will ask you to flash recovery, but then if one is already there it won't really change it, it just needs to see it to believe it.
Installing new files won't make a difference if you switch ROMs. It wipes your data when you re-flash, so you'll lose it all anyway (unless you back up your apps with Titanium Backup or MyBackup). All you need is a recovery installed - and I actually recommend Clockwork, but only because I use it myself and I have no problems with it - and you can reboot into it, install a new ROM, and start playing. I've never flashed from ROM Manager, even though it gives the option, but I imagine it does the same thing, but runs it automatically after a recovery reboot.
Read the "favorite ROM" thread with the poll attached, lots of good ROM recommendations in there. I'll say it once more: I'm using Fresh 1.0.1 and netarchy's 3.7.3c kernel (Fresh-compatible version). It's so fast and smooth.
If you like your current setup but want to try a new ROM, use ROM Manager (or Clockwork as a recovery reboot) to do a Clockwork backup. That way you can return to your current state if you want to. It's basically a system image that you can restore.
Here's one helpful page to start with.
And have fun.
Back on fresh 0.5.3, clockwork was not doing a great job with the wipe, causing the boot to loop. I believe it wasn't completely wiping the dalik cache.

how to make CWM3 ROM flashable in CWM2

What should I do when I want to flash a ROM that requires the new CWM3, I prefer using 2.5.0.5 personally and was wondering if theres something I can do, or have to updat recovery to flash the ROM
Honestly though, the 3.* series is almost as good as 2.5.* The only issue I've had were some wiping issues with 3.0.0.5 but it's getting better. Why go back when it's better to move forward?

There's only a few "edge case" situations when a ROM would require CWM3, and in those cases there's not much you can do to get it to work on CWM2, short of hacking CWM2 with a new kernel and system tools.
That said, you should upgrade to 3.0.0.8 for many, many reasons. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970032 for those reasons and tips on upgrading.
i could help you setup dsixda's kitchen, it will give you options for roms like converting to cwm3, zipalign, signing, etc..
Thanks everyone, I jumped ship to 3.0.0.8. Appreciate everyone's help and input!
A few questions though
1) I rock SkyRaider3.5 still, will this install with this recovery on a fresh install since the ROM was built pre CWM3. AND if not how can I do a fresh install on these ROMs until they are updated, is their a way to make it CWM3 compatible or no maybe I'm way off?
2) I had skyraider running, updated CMW from 2 to 3, THEN made a backup. this should work fine right?
Thanks guys!

Help please. Cant find older clockwork recoveries annywhere. (Stuck in boot loop)

I put 3.0.0.8 on my phone to try out cm7 but I now want to go back to my deodexed froyo based rom and stuck in boot loops. can someone please direct me to a 2.0.5.0 (or something in that range) clockwork recovery.
Rom Manager only goes back to 3.0.0.5...What good is that?
http://www.dougpiston.com should have a 2.5 Inc recovery.

Just helping out the OP here, but it's http://www.dougpiston.com/
Thanks soooo much guys back up and running but the only 2+ version I found was 2.5.1.2 which works but takes like 10+ minutes to do a nandroid restore. (Just googled and see others said the same for 2.5.1.1 & 2.5.1.2)
If anyone knows where I can get another 2+ version (like 2.5.0.5) I would be greatly appreciative.
Surprised Koush doesnt have a database of all the old clockwork recoveries.
He does. I unfortunately forgot to bookmark the link! Keep searching though, its out there.
Well after searching for about 45 minutes I finally found a 2.5.0.5 clockwork recovery hosted on some obscure site.
I can't tell you how dissapointeed I am right now in clockwork/Kosh.
First off how do you not give the user a warning that updating clockwork will lead to many basic roms you have saved not restoring correctly?
Second is any version of clockwork recovery should be able to backup/restore any rom.
Third how do you not make older clockwork recoveries easily available to the user? Rom Manger only lets you revert back to 3.0.0.5...Are you kidding? What good will that do most people with a non cm7 or gingerbread type rom? Even searching all of Koch site and his Gitrub I could not find any old clockwork recoveries anywhere.
Just a bad job all around on this one.
Oops, sorry. Swype thought I meant poison instead of piston lol... I tried!

[Q] Best Recovery w/o kernel

After trying most of the kernels/ROMs Ive found im happiest with stock and Supercharger.
I want to install a recovery but not change my kernel so I can install a couple of zips, which is the best to flash?
Look here.
Thanks, that worked great.

Problems flashing rom Evo 4g

Hi guys I am having some issues flashing a rom to my buddies phone. Is there a different method to flash roms on phones that are rooted with revolutionary?
I ask because my phone was rooted a year or so ago with unrevoked. I have no problems flashing roms to it. But everytime I flash a rom to my buddies phone it is just bombarded with force closes left and right. I tried reformatting always clearing every cache etc?
Am I missing something? Should I be flashing different roms since it was already on OTA 2.3.3? Sorry for the noob questions but I figured once I got s-off that most roms would be compatible.
thanks
All roms will work with revolutionary what recovery are you using?
We are legion, for we are many.
On his phone I'm using the clockwork recovery. Same thing I have used on my phone. With newer rooted phones do I need to run a different recovery? Or flash the roms differently?
Like I said his was was already on android 2.3.3 and mikg, synergy and all other roms just force close like crazy. These are all installed through clockwork.
Any help would be great guys thanks
I use amon RA style supersonic recovery v3.11 some use amon RA, cwm and twrp both have issues wiping twro2.0 is known to brick phones, I'd recommend ARSSR v3.11 or Amon RA v2.3
