After several of my videos came out sounding muffled or with no audio I did a test and found the microphone used to record video is the same as you talk into for calls (bottom of the phone).
My questions are:
What is the pin hole next to the camera lens?
Why would you design a camera with the microphone facing away from the subject you are shooting (and in my case put it in a place where you would hold the camera)?
The inc2 has several mics, which are what the pinholes are. What rom are you running?

I'm running SkyRaider Zeaus which seems to use the Sense 3.0 camera. Do different ROM's and different camera apps use different mics?
The Inc 2 only has 2 mics, the bottom of the phone pin hole, and the top of the phone pinhole. The top is for noise canceling.

When I tap my phone on back cover near the camera there is a distinct rattling sound. It's as if there is something loose inside the phone.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Nothing here, for me build quality is superb!
mines nearer to lower left section of back cover behind the home key but only just a minor creak.. to be expected with a plastic construction I guess (waiting for HTC to release a Legend type unibody on Desire)...

Same problem here. I'm going crazy from this sound. It seems that it is something in camera construction (maybe autofocus?) because when I take photos I get the same sound.

It's your camera.
A lot of phones that doesn't have fixed focus will have this issue. It's due to the lence moving inside its housing, creating that rattling sound.
My previous 3gs had it, my desire has it now. Nothing to worry about, but really annoying

Same here. Unfortunately it seems that this is a problem with HTC Desire.
No, its a problem with the cameras HTC uses. My Hero had the same rattle. so did the phone a friend uses. Other brands have the rattle as well.
It's just part of the camera and autofocus. wouldn't exactly call it bad build quality as well...

Thanks for the replies guys.
I had better stop tapping it if it's the camera! LOL
Wasn't sure if I should request exchanget but if they are all the same then no point.
Presumably it's the rattle that lets the camera zoom optically?
My N82 has this too. I'm pretty sure most autofocus camera phones will have this. I certainly don't think its a problem or a build quality issue. Does anyone NOT have that rattle when they sahke there phone upside down?
I have the rattle aswell. Oddly enough I have an LG Viewty with auto and manual focus and it doesn't have the same rattle. My N95 8GB didn't have the rattle either. My digital camera doesn't rattle either when I tap the lense. I'm guessing that it's just because the lense isn't that great.
Some devices are known to have this problem. Is is coming from the camera and is perfectly normal.
No rattles here, however frame of my desire is a bit... bent. You know, that brown part?
I pushed in so it's kinda ok now, but from some angles I can see light leaking out.
Some with trackball, the ball is a bit pushed to the right side, so light leaks out on the left side.
Kinda bummed for that, I mean this is after all quite expensive piece of technology...
EDIT: after some knocking around, there's that rattle, ARGHHHHH
It's the autofocus mech in the camera.
So, after I rooted, down graded, upgraded, and rooted again, I noticed my camera makes a click sound when ever I open up the camera app, pic or vid, or even cthruphone live wallpaper... can any one confirm that this has been happening before I rooted?
Sent from my Droid Incredible rooted 2.2
Not only you. I think its normal, some kind of shutter built into the camera module, I guess.... It clicks when I open the camera app, and when I exit it, or kill tasks if the camera was active. I'd say not a concern, as it has been that way with my phone before and after rooting. The only problem I've had is dust accumulating UNDER the camera glass, which can be blown out with aerosol duster through the four tiny slots around the camera, once the back phone cover (battery cover) is removed.
The phone has a mechanical auto focus instead of digital if you take a picture and look at the lens it will move slightly to focus.
Actually, I sent back my incredible because my speaker was blown (the made me do a battery pull thinking that would help!?) Got my new inc, and the camera does NOT make a sound when opening the camera or other apps that use the camera.

Does anyone else's evo make a clicking sound when it's booting up? I'm on a replacement my first, one didn't do it, it's weird.
Sent from my EVO 4G using Tapatalk
No if its clicking something isn't right the evos don't have a disk drive so its not the reader clicking on boot but could be a loose processor or ribbon cable that's catching on something there aren't too many moving parts that could actually make a clicking noise unless the housing/screen/digitizer is loose, does it have any light leakage around the digitizer/housing
We are legion, for we are many.
At the bottom of my screen below my buttons there's light coming through under each of the buttons..is that normal?
Sent from my EVO 4G using Tapatalk
No thats light leakage where the screen is seperated from the housing how long ago did u get the replacement?

I've noticed this too, i thought it was normal. I've had this evo since i came to Sprint in April 2011. But it didn't start making the noise until a few months ago.

The camera sensors in the evo doesn't have a physical shutter to make any noise if its the photo cell something is wrong there are 0 moving parts in a phones photo sensor unless it has a really high end sensor inside which unfortunately the evo does not since it's 8mp photos look like the 3mp photos in my 8mp Kodak camera, everything in the evos photo sensor is done thru digital rendering unlike a true photo lens which uses the shutter speed to control the amount of light the digital sensor picks up maintaining color and clarity in different lighting situations
We are legion, for we are many.
I didn't mention a shutter, I said focuser. Point it at a distant object, then hold your hand in front of it while watching the camera, you can see it move. Mine makes the same noise when it changes that much.
Mine is totally silent and typically the focuser is attached to shutters my camera doesn't do **** physically it does it all digitally its just a sensor in the phone no actual lenses like a real camera that's y it takes crap pics compared to a real 8mp digital camera
We are legion, for we are many.
Typically the focuser is attached to shutters... Well, you're obviously an expert on digital cameras, sorry for contradicting you! Carry on, I'm sure you're correct
It may have some kind of focus wheel but that still shouldnt make much noise as the sensors for phone cameras don't have lots of moving parts like you typical digital camera photo sensor which has a focusing shutter and full 35mm camera lens ifront of the actual sensor which is why the camera pics from a cell phone at same MP look way worse than that on a camera ima tech nerd I like to research and take **** apart to see how it works and stuff lol I'm curious about that crap cuz I like to modify stuff

Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
A brand new EVO does not make any noise when booting. However, if most phones are making the sound after some months or they are refurbished, the fact that the device was once opened may have something to do with it (wires not tucked in the right place, screws not tightened all the way, etc...) or maybe if the phone has been dropped. At this point, only thing is to take it back to a Sprint store. If they can't do anything about it and aren't willing to replace it, I would call CS and complain about it. After enough complaining, they give in.
Hey gus, got something to show you, a tip, and a question, i made a music video last week (Alicia keys/Rihanna cover) and used my note 2 for one angle. I figured why not start using it, i bought alot of batteries for it, i have a 64 gb card, and its 1080 like my other cameras. Obviously, the lens and sensor arent that great but in low light, and if its on a tripod, its pretty good, i was even able to add zooming later in the editing. The note 2 shot is the one with the drummer/rapper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeRceSDUjtk .
A couple things, first of all, here is the link for a tripod mount that definitely works for the note 2, if you buy any others, make sure they fit first. The whole stabalizer thing is stupid and it doesnt really do anything although i guess it would help you not block the lens or mic, it works great as a tripod mount http://www.amazon.com/Woxom-Slingshot-Smartphone-Video-Stabilizer/dp/B008Q1XQ5Q
Also, does anyone know of any apps that will let you lower the gain of the microphone while taking video? because the mics on really all of these phones are abysmal!! Really if you were able to lower the gain, that would solve the issue, mostly. also, does anyone know if theres a way to get an external microphone working on the phone when taking video? when i plug in my video mic it still records from the internal microphones.
On a side note (no pun intended) i think its kind of cool that it records in stereo with the built in mics... i thought thatextra mic was just for when youre on speaker but it seems like its used for stereo... when did they start doing that with phones?
Anyway, tell me what you think of the video, again, the note 2 angle is the one on the drummer and the zooming is not the digital zoom while recording, but after in the editing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeRceSDUjtk
+1 on this topic. I went through this same problem with my old Galaxy S 4g. I installed Voodoo Sound (must be rooted) and in that I was able to select between 4 pre mic settings. However, I don't think Voodoo Sound is compatible with our Note 2 yet. .... I heard just before U.S release date that Supercurio was working on it, but I haven't heard since. Anyone else know?
