Magnet on leather case - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Magnet on flap of the case, will this cause problems with sensors? I have searched this and found some older posts on it for different phones. Just wondering if the G2 is effected by the magnet? Should I use a case with a magnet? Really not sure what kinda case to use if you shouldn't use a case with a magnet, all that I have looked at have a magnet of some sort or another on them.
Well I forgot about the snap on cases? But I really dont like those snap on cases, afraid you could bump your phone and it fall out of the snap on case.

It depends how strong the magnet is and where its located. But also the magnets could also accidentally turn your phone on by accident.

official Samsung flip case

after looking for ages and ordering a Zeus carbon black flip which was so slippery in hand that wull br returning it, I went into my nearest O2 and found they had the official samsung leather flip case for only £14.99. Quality feel and has clever magnetic closer at the top which avoids those annoying flip type m agnet catches. It is thicker than the zeus but adds little in weight. If a flip case is your preference then I would say the official one at that price is bargain.

One thing I've wondered with these flip cases - does the magnetic part of the case interfere with the electronic compass or have they shielded it in some way?
Am debating about getting one...

It's not magnetic. There's just a hook that grips to the top of the phone.
May look out for one then. Thanks!
It is magnetic. The hook you're talking about holds the phone in the case and has a small metal plate on the front which the magnet in the flip down front cover attaches to.
And it makes no difference to the compass.

So many cases flip down but none flip up?

I looking at leather flip cases...but i want one that flips up...it jus seems more natural and convenient. Is there a reason why every flip case i have searches through online like 50...on ebay and amazon all flip down?
Anyone find a flip up?
or one without that buckle belt.....seems half pointless...its not going to open by itself on a table or in your pocket without it. And when/if you drop it 90% you would of unfastened it already.
And where about on the phone is the compass located...and where do these flip covers normally have the magnet...on the buckle bit on the bit the buckle attaches to...worrying about the compass
I have seen some but dont remember where. They flip down because otherwise they will cover the camera..

nice point
terrapin case at amazon is quite a nice case . it has a double crease that let you fold right back as to not cover camera. and less than a tenner. this was my first case for my sgs2 but decided to go for screen protector and case mate tough as found the flip a bit annoying due to the size. now looking for an upgrade for the casemate tough now as i keep getting echos. as soon as i take the case of it stops? bit strange. but i am using the terrapin again until i find another.
I've got a Tuff-Luv from Amazon.

It's a nice cases, it does the job pretty nicely, and the phone is really well protected against shocks. Have a look on a youtube demonstration .... It's a nice stunt party ;-)

Are the close clips magnetic? Always weary of magnetic cases, while some people say they're safe, I'm not willing to proove them right...

Nope, those clip are not magnetic. It's mechanic. I don't know the term in english. (in french, it is "bouton pression") google translation says "snap"...
Hope it helps
If you have a flip case does that mean i shouldn't bother with a screen protector...i'm sure the gorilla glass will take care of the rest
Flipups will be found in your local market phone traders stall .

What about the headphone jack??
If the case flips up and you have a headphone connected, don't you have to disconnect the headphone before you flip up the case!?
Just my five cents!

Magnetic closing case is not good?

Hi
I have been using magnetic closing case (prair) and wondering how bad it is for display and using pen.
Thanks

I've been using PDair cases with magnetic closures on a succession of smartphones since WM days. Never encountered problems.
Could be a different story if you also keep your VISA or AE cards inside.

Correct. Wacom styluses use a form of magnetic resonance. Having a strong magnet near the touchscreen is going to mess with it.
I suppose if it's a weak magnet, on the back - that might not be a problem.

Magnetic Closures
Does the magnet have any permanent effect on the screen or stylus! I plan on carrying mine on a horizontal belt pouch, but remove it during use. This doesn't seem likely to have any bad effect, but would like to hear from someone who knows for sure.
I have been using PDair cases for Galaxy note for two weeks and never noticed any problem so far. accuracy of S-pen is same whether I put Note in case or not. Also it does not affect accuracy of GPS fortunately. I guess it may depend on strength of a magnet.
But I am still wondering if it would affect screen or something else.
Thanks.
I found this in Galaxy Note manual
' Do not use carrying cases or accessories with magnetic closures or allow
your device to come in contact with magnetic fields for extended periods of
time. ' Page 180
Even though my PDair case does not do anything, I decide not to use it anymore.
I will look for another case which does not have magnet
I got a pdair too, with magnetic closure, the back side if the magnet is pretty weak so probably won't do any phone damage, was wandering if maybe i could remove the metal magnet clasp and stitch in a small square of Velcro over it and some on the tongue end too but I'm not sure if taking out the metal bits will rip the leather to much?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Didn't notice that in the manual. Glad that the temporary case I ordered with magnetic closures was only $5. Will try to remove the magnets, if possible, and stitch on some velcro.

This is the correct answer.
Even though it may not seem like it's affecting the Note. The magnets in the case will eventually cause problems for the built in gyroscope, compass as well as the Wacom technology based S-Pen.
I have personally tested and seen this for myself.
Hi from me. Do we know from our own experience that a simple magnetic clip can cause problems? I am asking because I used such cases in the past (some of them were official) with many phones without any problems and some of them also had a pen.
Well, I would like to order an E6 EASECASE myself with magnetic closure:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/E6-EASECA...Accessories&hash=item564714a197#ht_7004wt_905
However, as you can see this case is much more thick than the A1 etc (meaning distance from phone to magnet is larger.
And magnetic forces diminish by R^2 - perhaps it is enough for not affecting it?
If its still not enough, what about this idea:
Could we replace them with the Tetrax X-Way magnets? they are designed not to cause magnetic fields, and should not affect the phone in any way.
Speaking of which - I want to order a Tetrax x-Way holder for the car soon (which means one magnet would be glued to the back of the phone) - Do we really know these magnets do not create any magnetic fields?
Hi again. Do we know anyone who faced an actual problem with a magnetic case or is this just a generic safety instruction? With almost all leather cases having magnets I suppose we should have been hearing more about smartphones facing this problem.

Problem is that its an accumulative effect, to magnetize the gyroscope, pen etc you need prolonged exposure to constant magnetic fields (more than 1 month probably).
Question is what kind of magnetic fields still exists in the cases I wrote in the earlier post (E6 wallet, Tetrax X-Way special magnets with supposedly no fields).
I dont believe that these magnets are strong enough to cause any problems. Otherwise we will be facing problems also with the credit cards etc. I have send an email to Pdair asking about the magnets isue and they replied that they never got any complaints about it. Do we have any link to an actual incident? I am asking because J want to order a case and all that I like use magnets.
I tested magnet meter in Galaxy note and magnet in PDair case slightly affect magnet meter. So the magnet in case eventually makes magnet meter in note confused and as a result it would indicate wrong direction or current location.
Try to download compass app through market and test it !
I can confirm that the pdair small magnetic closure does affect the compass, i just noticed when i flipped the top over to the back that the compass direction on maps changed to a wrong direction.
I've now removed the magnetic clasp form the case and will stitch in a small velcro dot to both ends (will still look classy )
So yes, i thought maybe it wouldnt do much as the magnetic force on the back is pretty weak, but if you flip it over (like every time your using the phone you usually flip the main cover all the way to the back) the main force of the magnet seems to affect the phone quite a bit.
Why do these 'high quality' phone case manufacturers keep making magnetic locks for compassed/gps cellphones!! I really like that new Zenus carbon case and would get it if it didnt have a magnet!
I was reading the Samsung Galaxy S1 & S2 manual and the same warning about magnetic cases is mentioned so it doesnt seem to be Note specific so I am thinking to totaly ignore it and buy my case of choice.

Flip case that is detachable?

Im looking for a flip case where you can detach the 'flip' part of the case. At the moment im using the Samsung Flip case (instead of a screen protector) within a cheap TPU case that has a kickstand. Im finding the camera tricky to use with the flip part of the case getting in the way, so it would be good if i could take it off when needed, then reattach it. :good:
I've done a DIY mod on the flip case - cut off the 'flip' part and stuck it to the TPU with velcro - as you could imagine its far from perfect...
I've been searching for a while but nothing so far.....
Well here's something the case makers seriously have to do.
Imagine something as convenient as the Microsoft tablet detachable keyboard?! But a detachable flip.
I would buy one without thinking twice.

Looks like a practical solution.
However it has a magnetic clasp. If I understood correctly, this is bad for the Note, because it interacts with the digitiser ?

Is there any flip cover that only the front one like apple ipad one? So could use any hardcase...
Thanks for the input.
The Mercury colour case looks good, i'll bear it in mind. There a couple of youtube vids knocking about so i'll do some more research.
As usual, you need a woolly coat to get the things you want...
Detachable front cover case for the iPhone A larger case for the Note would work well.

There must be a demand for such a case? I can't be the only one who prefers not to use screen protectors, but finds a flip case gets in the way of using the phone, especially the camera!?
The search continues....
Edit; Found another one;
Luxury window flip case- not sure where the 'luxury' element of the case comes in as to be fair, it looks cheap and nasty!
maybe you can try modding one using valcro

I have one of these : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIO-BLACK..._MobilePhonesCasesPouches&hash=item2570d08d2f
You can remove the phone relatively easy when you need to use the camera, is a bit fiddly to get to the stylus (but I have large fingers)
the magnetic clasp locks around the rear of the case/phone so does not affect the digitizer.
Hope this helps
I was also looking for a detachable flip casing .....the normal flip casing is uncomfortable feels weird when capturing pictures & recording videos
I bought a blue flip case says official from amazon, it was fine for the first month, but after that, I just took it off, its so uncomfortable to use. any suggestions for some others
I've got one of these - Amazon Link and it's just the job.

Budget metal bumper

I'm on a REALLY tight budget, and I've found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aluminum-Bu...VG/ref=sr_1_67?ie=UTF8&qid=1352551327&sr=8-67
Has somebody tried it before? Do the cover-buttons have a good response (is much more force needed to make them "click")? Any suggestions?
while it might provide a unique look to your phone, i'm not sure how much 'protection' a metal bumper will give.
once that aluminum meets concrete, it'll scratch/dent and it wont look as pretty.
I had an Element Case Vapor AR15-V when it was released for the iP4. I loved the look but it killed my reception..
I don't think/know if the S3 would fall victim to such an issue..

The aesthetic side of it is of no importance for me. On the reception issue, it was reportedly due to the antenna being linked to a section of the metal frame the iPhones had, so no problem here regarding the S3 i pressume.
