Wierd messaging fc - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off...URRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHH.
Now, to the problem. Everytime I opened the messaging app and tried to create a new message, its fc. I then wiped data in cwm and titanium restored all of my apps. No system data. It still fc'd. I was on eh06...so I updated to urban vendetta and it was ok for a little while. Now its happening again. Any ideas how I can fix this?

That's what I was wondering as well. Also an easy fix is to push another mms.apk. it is a quick fix if you can't clear it up

So ... a while back I had som probs with ms crashing. Found a tip from smart guy that said to terminalemulator to some location in filesystem and delete a file... my recollection was something like mms.db ... and when phone restarted or ms restsrted it would rebuild the file. It prob corruption in the mms database file locally. Search for that and do it... wrked like a charm ... g.

On eh06 I was running honeycomb theme...and on urban vendetta whatever comes with it. See, I have tired a different mms.apk. stock and RandomKing's themed one's. No dice.

I would still rather the stock work...I've used handcent and GOsms and there's just to many settings. But I installed handcent and it works. Then everytime I got a message the stock messaging app force closed...so I deleted it out of /system/app and everythings good. I'm not sure if pic mail works, though. I tried sending myself one and never got it.

[Q] getting rid of the app "messaging"

Is it possible to delete the app "messaging" but not mess up being able to actually text?
Here is my scenario I use handcent to text and they have an option to blacklist (hide) messages from certain people. However the app "messaging" which comes with the phone still shows them! Can I get hide that app? I am have the epic experience with the emotionless beast on my phone.
I couldn't find the app in root explorer either to rename it!
Any ideas?
it's in your system/app directory it's called MMS.apk. you can back up and unistall it with sdx stock app uninstaller and see if everything still works ok. If you have any issues then you can just restore it.

I usd sdx stock app to remove the orignal one in order to put on an mms.apk that allows me to have a maximum 5M mms size. If i delete it after i just put it on wont it remove the feature?
I will try it in a bit anyways though and let you know the results
EDIT: It didn't work,by getting rid of it I can still sms but my mms is completely disabled which makes sense. Thanks anyways for the idea though
Any other suggestions please

I could have told you wouldn't be able to send or receive mms
Just use launcher puerto and hide the stock app on the draw. I believe theres other apps that do this also.

No the issue isn't getting double notifications. I need the app removed or hidden. The messages that I hide in handcent are still visible in messaging, thats the problem.
Use shadysms.

Deleting some stock apps have cost me lengthy time in recovery mode, leave em in for the ride.
Use titanium backup to freeze them. Out of sight, out of mind.

This is a bad idea as some stock apps are needed like the messaging app

yeah, all you can do is disable notifications for it. i just wish that i could hide/remove some of the apps from the "share" function, which i use quite a lot. i'd like to choose which apps are in that view, and in which order. i know its the same in sense 2.0, so we can only hope it comes in a later revision.

I've used cyanogen since my OG Droid days and delete mms.apk after I install handcent along with email (not gmail), protips, news and weather, car home, etc. Never had an issue.

I did this and tested it and mms can NOT be received. Fortunately I had a TI backup to restore mms.apk from, otherwise I would have had to reinstall CM...
You don't have to reinstall the rom just for one app.. its packaged in, just take mms.apk out of /system/app in the rom download and put it back into /system/app on your phone.

SMS pop up for CM7

Has teamdouche ever thought of adding a pop up SMS option for their original mms.apk. I can't stand using handcent, GOsms, or chompsms. I think shift, toast and others in teamdouche, has done outstanding job bringing us CM7. This thought popped in head this morning. Thanks guys.

There is an app in the market literally called "SMS popup"

It would still be cool for it to be built in natively to CM7 no extra apps required. Thanks for that app though.

Right now, the only workaround is to use GoSMS.
Sent while hanging with that really hoopy frood Ford Prefect.
I was able to delete telephony.db in the folder /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/database to get my MMS working. Since then, my MMS has been running flawlessly.
What's wrong with it. Mine worked out of the box without any tinkering from me.
I deleted telephony.db then rebooted. MMS works in both directions.
I don't even know if it worked before I deleted that file.

For some people MMS's sometimes just won't go through, and keep showing that they're sending.
Handcent and GO SMS worked for me.
I deleted the telephony.db but it doesn't do anything even after reboot.. Is it maybe because I'm on 3g?

My MMS was working fine for about 24 hrs. after installing CM9A2, then just stopped sending. I deleted the telephony.db file, cleared the data for the Messaging app, and rebooted. After that, I could send and receive MMS over both 3G and wireless. Try clearing the data for Messaging, reboot, and try again.
Thanks everyone for the help

Is the telephony.db file supposed to remain deleted after a reboot? I've tried the whole process four times and it keeps coming back and mms still doesn't work.

I can confirm this works also on other phones - my Desire Z had also this issue.
What I also had to do was to clean cache from sms application and now it works! Thanks!

Saving mms

Is there any way to get the stock messaging app to automatically change the file name when saving an mms? It promts me every time telling me to rename it or else it will overwrite the last one... Not the end of the world, but incredibly irritating.

No idea, but if you just want a convenient backup of your texts, this one seems them to your gmail. They'll be threaded weird and out of order, but easily searchable.
Oops, I can't post links yet. It's called SMS Backup+, available on the play market.

I have the same problem, you can continue naming each individual picture with numbers you just randomly think of, its rare I repeated the same number. Or download a third party app like Handscent or Go SMS which just downloads the MMS without worrying about a particular designation. Every once in awhile you run across a Touchwiz rom that doesn't have this problem, but its usually a ASOP rom that just downloads MMS without this problem.

That's about what I figured. I used to use handcent but the stock app has made leaps and bounds over the years so I like sticking with that. I've been doing the random letters after going to save it, but in you ef up and do by chance pick something you already used, it will overwrite it.

Any update or solution to this issue? From what I remember my Samsung Epic 4G did not have this problem, as a matter of fact it did exactly what we are trying to get the Galaxy S3 to do by default. I find that this should have not been an issue, why on earth would someone NOT think to make this a basic function/feature?....
