[Q] No AOSP Roms? - Defy General

Just got my Defy yesterday, just couldt wait or see the point in waiting for the Defy+....
It seems as im the lucky ones with a Green Lens but with the 720p able chip on it.
Anyways back to the subject in hand... Why dont i see any AOSP roms? There are a couple of MIUI roms, and a bunch of MOTOBLUR roms. I personally hate Motoblur since i use LPP to set up my launcher as i want.
The best so far has been a WajkIUI that has LPP installed as default, but i hate the MIUI style menus. They are just too Iphonish.
So... Is there a clean AOSP rom for this phone or not?

Not exactly AOSP, but CM7 is really close to it (just a few extras but they are usable not like blur)

Stock apps or similar on AOSP ROM?

From what I have read neither the camera, dialer, or EPST can be put on an AOSP ROM. Hoping someone can tell me this isn't so.
Any reccomendations?
(I tried 360 and vignette but was not happy with the lag on them. The closest dialer I found was dialerone but looking for something with a little more polished look.)

Not quite sure where you are going here. If you are that in love with sense apps, why are you interested in AOSP roms? The way your question reads, it sounds like you haven't yet tried AOSP. That is the beauty of this whole process. Nand, try something out, and if you don't like it or it doesn't have what you were looking for, nand back!!
I've been rockin MIUI for 3 months and not missing sense one bit. The camera is AMAZING- better than sense and the market apps. Some apps do have nice effects and what not, but none of them can touch MIUI's camera as far as moving/action shots go.
Let me know if you need any more info regarding AOSP. Again, back up your stuff and go see for yourself. As long as you nandroid, you have nothing to lose!
I've tried MIUI, CM6, CM7, and one other GB ROM in addition to many sense ROMs. It's not that I'm in love with sense apps. I use ADW. Overall I prefer CM7 first and foremost and secondly MIUI. I put on almost 40k miles a year and use my GPS and bluetooth constantly and like to take lots of pics. MIUI has a great look and feel but the GPS takes longer to find locations than other ROMs and when using my bluetooth is incredibly unresponsive so those two things killed it for me. I never really played with it's camera. If I were a dev I'd take base my ROM on CM7, add MIUI menus, customizability options, theme manager and take the camera, dialer, and EPST from Sense.
Where I was basically wishing for is a way to put the Sense dialer, camera, and EPST on CM7. I should have said that Thanks for the reply though!

[Q] Sense or no sense?

Basically I'd like to be persuaded as to whether to use a sense rom (e.g ARHD) or a nosense rom (e.g CM7). And if I use CM7 can I install the HTC dialer and messaging app?
--
Previously I was using ARHD (sense) and go launcher, and I've just updated to the new ARHD with sense 3. As much as I like it, it's not quite as minimalist as I liked with go launcher and my battery life is not as good (sense is a battery hod, no denying).
I'm tempted to go the other way; CM7 with no sense features. What are the advantages of this? Why do some people prefer no sense?
Can I install the sense APKs of the apps I like? The htc dialer is great, as is the messaging/
I can't answer all your questions however I recently went from RCMix3d 1.4 runny to CM7 and I'm loving the change. The battery life is excellent and it makes me wonder why I was using sense in the first place.
I don't even miss it that much, apart from the odd thing. I'll take longer battery life over flashy show off animations any day

No, the HTC apps won't run without the Sense framework.
Beyond that, I'm not going to persuade you with way; the only way to decide is to backup, flash cm7 and see which one you prefer.

I suggest giving MIUI a try. It is basedd om CM7,has great features and is very easy to customise!
Definately take a look at MIUI as well Its an AOSP rom like CM7 but with some very nice additions. If you like to try out different themes and lots of personalization options MIUI is definately the way to go.
But in the end both ways (sense or no sense) have their advantages. What i dont like about sense is that its so bloated up with stuff you rarely ever use. You can cleane some of it with scripts like rom cleaner but still we're talking 350mb rom (sense) vs 80-90mb rom (CM7 or MIUI).
On the other hand with sense you get one good looking theme and good to very good apps for all the features of your phone. On CM7 you might need to find another app to play music via DLNA for example and another app for weather and so on.
sense and see how you feel if you dont like then go for no sense .....simple really
im with sense atm and feel that it is good
you could try the better of both worlds by flashing DeDense from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207645
Try Helios 0913 for a CM7 rom if you're gonna try one. It'll make you not wanna go back. These forums are crowded with sense roms that look exactly the same and offer nothing different, except some visual stuff, than the other 20 or so sense roms that are here. A good AOSP rom is hard to find on HTC phones now. Like I said though, try Helios or better yet, Hydrogenmod and you'll forget all about sense.

I love Helios too but, more broadly, I went the way of CM7-based ROMs in general + Lord Clockan's amazing kernels and never looked back.
I never enjoyed such a snappy and responsive device when I was on Sense-based ROMs. Ditto battery life. I'm a massive CyanogenMod fanboy now, and will be flashing Nightlies (which are in a very good condition ATM) until Richfish updates Helios.
People on Sense ROMs have good things to report too, though, so my suggestion (which you've probably already heard a million times) is to try stuff out for yourself.
No one will be able to tell you what you would prefer. Test out a CM rom and a sense rom. Make your own mind up.

I tried the Jboogie LiquidArc rom and i can assure its very stable , fast , smooth , and most important to me = very easy steps to install : http://modmymobile.com/forums/640-m...e3-liquidarc-gingerbread-v2-0-09-08-11-a.html
and i think if you have a red lens defy then u should try MS2Ginger 2.1 u will have 720p video record : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140839
Hope I helped
CM7. Period x)
Sent from my 1Ghz CM7 + CM9 Defy
I use MS2Ginger 2.0 (Defy with red lens), works great for me, especially if you want 720p recording/playback.
MS2Ginger if you like blur , or CM7 smooth and fast without any Force close problems i almost tried every rom out there 2.2.2 froyo is also fast and works fine .
PS: dont ever flash 2.3.4
i used to have cm7 until recently. cm7 is getting boring and miui has caught up with cm7 as far as bug fixes are concerned, but it's much more eye pleasing
try wajkiui, without the ics add-on first, and see if you like it.

cm7 boring? boring as rock-stable?
I would try again if wifi is fixed and battery drain...
jboogie is based off cm7 by quarax. pretty decent.
barebones is the ultimate cm mod with the "bare essentials"
cm7 is fast, and as far as customising it there are LOADS of themes, personally i like the way this one looks
miui is nice, recently it has got much more smoother and there are many variants. wajk,d something :S and so on
(personally i like the galnet miui but waiting for the next update before jumping up and down and trying to convert people.)
ms2 ginger and moto ginger are based off the stock gb from moto and there are soo many nandroids of the same(stock gb from moto for the defy plus)in the dev thread. only plus point of ms2ginger over the rest is the 720p recording and its awesome (but only to view on the phone, on the computer its a totally different story)
cm9 is still kicking in the alpha stage but at the moment looks the most promising.
at the end of it, which ever rom you like should be the one you pick. oh and be careful, trying not wrecking your phone! lol
no one here can be held responsible if anything happens to your phone but if there is an issue, there are many awesome people who are waiting to help!!
any way happy modding!
well said... but the stock froyo of India 3.4.3-36-1.7 is the most stable for me...
MS2GINGER for me ... 720p recording and playback and most importantly the battery backup ... this is the rom with the best battery life for me :]

lol....i might have to eat my own words actually
after testing a few variances of miui based roms, ie, wajkiui, dsj ics miui and galnet miui, i still went back to cm7 because those roms are still not as stable and smooth as cm7.
then i found that many of those eye candies i found on miui based roms are there in cm7 anyway. i just wasn't into tweaking my phone before until i got into miui roms.
anyway i'm currently testing ms2ginger 2.1 for green lens and mtotoginger 2 i found the best thing about these roms are the battery life. most roms i tested so far consume about 0.4-0.6 % per hr when the phone is in deep sleep. the motoginger 2 rom (preferred over the ms2ginger) uses about 0.3% per hr when deep sleep and on maximum battery saver mode!
I really have to agree with CM7. I've been running it for weeks, without any random reboots and lots of usage.
It is just the safest bet out there.
Also consider try WajkIUI ICS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161110
I bet you will like its smooth faster than ever and the thing is stability
Im my point of view Wajk is one of the best devs 4 defy
I've used Cm7 for about 3 months, and I have to say, it's really stable. But I couldn't figure out why the built-in ADW Launcher was so laggy, but the ADW from market wasn't. But in fact, I didn't really cared about ADW, because I've used LP. There's no other Launcher on Earth which is that smooth, stable and far away from annoying gimmicks like those freaky transition effects from Go Launcher. After 3 months cm7 got very boring for me. So I decided to test some of the other ROM's postet here. Ms2Ginger was kind of overloaded and I don't like the color of the settings menue. Wajkiui was a variety of a MIUI Rom but without the MIUI Launcher. The last one I tried, was the MIUI Pikachu Edition. And It feels like much smoother then other MIUI Rom's, more stable and settings to play around So, I use MIUI Pikachu for about 2 months and I don't think I'll change the ROM until there's a final Version of CM9-Jordan.

arr.. yes, the pikachu edition. i've heard of it but it's in german which i don't speak
Yea, its a german Rom, but it suports english, too. Im just comparing it with stock MIUI and Galnet-MIUI. I cant see any great differences except of the theme and Bootanimations
The main difference of the Pikachu edit. is the app called "Flag-configer". With this app, you can change installation parameters and app contents BEFORE you flash the ROM. MIUI Pikachu is the only ROM which is supported by the Flag-configer, actually I'm not sure if it's the only supported ROM. For now, the GALNET and WAJIKU can't be configured by this app.

edit: is there a site in english? how am i going to install it if everything is in german until i get a chance to change the language?
i tried cm7 and currently on Wiui... have to say they r fast n solid! but as i am always outside w/o wifi... thus my data always on... the battery eats 15%/hr even when i am doing nothing with it n always in my pocket!!!
therefore i can say i really enjoy my defy when i m at home(wif wifi)... but once outside... i have to ration its use in case battery is flat when i have urgent call to make!!!
any rom out there to fix this problem?

[Q] Cm7 or sense

Hi i am a new owner of wilfire buzz.
i want a stable phone! So what do you longtime buzz users think
what is better CM7 or sense
i use/love cm7 it has some cliches from time to time but its the best imo, f you want custom rom use cm7 or some 2.2 sense roms or just root the stock one flash oc kernel and you are done
You are going to get a totally split opinion here (Many love CM, but, some hate the dialer app, the messages app, and its looks, and so on and so forth). Honestly, just use both, and stick with the one that suits YOU.
Depends what you like, cm7 is way way way way more customizible IMO, and also not full of junk i never use so I'm definitely on the cm7 side of the fence, I'm not knocking sense for all you sense lovers out there it is good at what it does and if you use all the things in it its perfect. its just I like to decide what is on my phone and how it looks
But I agree with 3xeno test em all, it took me 3 months to decide to stick with cm7.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
I agree wit u both 3xeno and Scratch... test all the ROMs and decide yourself...
For me CM7 is best wen cam to performance and customization, but lacks all the UI stuff that a sense ROM gives... the intelli dialer, camera, sense feel...so on...
Cm7? The thing i love in it is its versatility and capabilities. And ofcourse if you are a dev, you should use it, but sense is eyecandy, ofcourse i use some elements from sense rom, like gallery and camera in my cm7, and uninstalled some default app from cm7 and replaced some with market app, ( like slow adw launcher with launcher pro) and trying to inter breed cm7 and sense.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
There is no good or bad... CM7 uses adw launcher. So download it and test if you like it more than sense.
My Wildfire have sense.
I just like it more than adw. (dont ask me why!)
Agree with Scratch0805 It depends on what you like really, me personally i enjoy CM7 more cause of the speed, higher OS, more things i can customize on...
I got my wildfire last october but i finally decided to flash it just last week
I'm still on 2.2 mainly to test my applications against it, but what I'd miss with CM7 is that when the phone rings I can just flip it over and it'll STFU. That's really helpful when I'm at work. Also, when it rings and I pull it out of my pocket it lowers the volume a bit. But it also has useless junk like Footprints and Friend Stream.

CyanogenMod

So, I've long been a Sense lover but I think I'm ready to CM7 but have a few questions.
Basically, what's the cons from switching from Sense to CM7? I know you don't have ESPT and 720p recording. What are some other differences?
You don't have any of the Sense apps. What you think of as stock is part of Sense, AOSP either doesn't have the app or has a different version. The phone, contacts, and sms apps are different. There's no social networking apps built in, you'll have to download them from the Market. You'll need to flash the gapps zip, which will give you the Google apps and allow you to sync your Gmail, contacts, calendar, etc and access the Market. The stock email app is different. I personally prefer AOSP over Sense, specifically MIUI, but a lot of people like the Sense apps and launcher.
As long as you do a nandroid backup, you can always get back to where you were on your current Sense rom if you don't like it.
Sometimes there's GPS issues with AOSP roms, if you have problems there are fixes available.
You asked for the cons, so that's what I gave you. But really, I like AOSP more. There are plenty of pros as well, just flash and see if it's for you.
Sent from my Evo + MIUI using Tapatalk!
AOSP Roms are known for having GPS problems. I loved cm7 but I could never get my GPS right. You can't use Sense widgets on cm7 obviously. There aren't many drawbacks to getting it to be honest. The only thing that ruined it for me was GPS. Tried every fix. I'm happy with MIUI now. 4g works fine so you're good to go with cm7. Just make sure you always have a backup.
PS person above me is a beast, just sayin'
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Thanks for your responses. I don't use widgets anymore which is why I figured I might try CM. Although I must admit I like the Sense messaging, e-mail, etc so that might take some getting used to. But I think I'm going to dive in and see what it's like so thanks again for the clarification.
BTW, I'm from Greensboro
Check out the thread below if you do decide to go with
I would also recommend launcher pro and handcent

Decks or eXplod IMO are better than cm, don't have the gps issues either.

I am currently running cm 7.1,and i love it.no problems anywhere.....except batt.life is the worst ive seen with the cm dynasty.personally,cm 7.0.3.1 is the best one so far.it depends on preference as to what rom to go with
Used it for awhile. I didn't like the blandness of it and the fact that you basically need to theme it for any type of eye candy.
The other is that if you go back and look at all the unrecoverable boot loop/white screen of death posts, almost all were running CM7, which may be me being paranoid, but it was enough for me, personally, to not use it.
MIUI FTW!
I agree with MIUI. GPS is good.
Sent from my RED XDA.
I'm in agreement with the other posters. AOSP is where it's at. The only things I miss from Sense ROMs are the FriendStream widget and HTC's calendar. I used to miss the spit-and-polish from Sense, but the quality of themes available for MIUI have made that a non-issue. With the way you can mix n' match theme elements, I find I can put together something FAR more attractive than stock Sense. This may just be my experience, but themes for Sense ROMs seem to cause more aggravation than they are worth. I always seem to get some pretty erratic performance with any kind of theme applied to Sense.

What kernel are you using? I found that Savaged Zen with SBC off works like magic with my battery. I've been stunned at how much better my battery has been.
