I have the files to install the app itself, but when I try it says that it's already installed and asks me to uninstall it. Is there something that I need to do in order to make this work? I really hate google voice and other alternatives to the stock app. This is literally the only thing that I don't really like about cyanogenmod, and it's probably not worth using a different rom just because of this, so if anyone knows a fix please let me know, thanks!

Same issue: no VZW VVM on CM 6.1 RC2 / Incredible
I agree, I would really like to have the stock visual voicemail app on my CM installation. Does anybody have any ideas about how to get this to work?
I tried copying the VVM.apk from the original system image and installing it, but I get a DEXOPT error, and I don't really know what that means. Is there anyway to recompile/repackage the APK to make it work on the CM ROM?
I'm familiar with basic Android software development and tools, I just need help finding what direction to go in.
Use file manager and go to "/system"
Mount the folder R/W(Read/Write
open build.prop in Text Editor
look for "ro.horizontalVvvm = True" and chenge it to False
look for "ro.horizontalBUA = True" and change it to False
save your edit, and back out to thr "/system" folder. Once again switch the directory back to R/O, exit your apps and reboot.
You shoulkd now be able to install your Vvm.apk without it telling you to uninstall it because one is already installed.
Note I am using Virtuous rom however it should work for most roms I would imagine.
If you do not have a Vvm.apk here is one from the Droid X but it works great on my incredible. Looks almost like the stock incredible version.
mc-pdfd-live.dyndns.org/droid/VIRTUOUS_ROM_3.2.0_ADDONS/Motorola_Virtual_Voicemail/virtual-voicemail.zip
Hope this helped.
I can't edit the file. It errors when I try to save.
Here are a couple of simple questions for BYUsinger84 to help me figure it out.
Is your phone rooted ? If not this will not work.
If thats not the problem are you making sure to mount the "/system" folder R/W(Read/Write) before modifying the "build.prop" file, and then back to R/O(Read/Only) once editing is done and saved.
You say it errors when you try to save. Sounds like you probably didnt mount the "/system" folder to be R/W not allowing the modified file to be written to the phone.
If you did do all of that corrrectly and it still dosen't work, try to write down or get a screen capture of the exact error as it is written on your screen.
Hope this helps.
Yes. this fix works on the Incredibly ReEngineered rom as well. Thanks for the ups.
THANKS!
I lost the visual voicemail app when I flash the OMGB V7 rom
Why not use Google voice? Sets up the same thing.

FYI i know this is an older post, but maybe, like me, someone will search for how to make vvm work - this is for my tbolt, but looks like it works on andriods in general, just gotta have hookup to big red.
Im running synergy rc2 and these switches are already true. i used root explorer to browse to the system/build.prop file and viewed it (didnt have to edit, but if i did, root explorer already opens r/w defalut and if you select and hold, the menu that comes up has the 'edit in text editor' selection available)
the titanium backup of vvm.apk wouldnt install, but when i downloaded the one above (THANKS FOR IT), i installed it and my messages started coming in. i installed it right from the SD card - not sure if that will bite me in the butt later, but oh well.
for those who ask why vvm - i am new to android and never set up gvoice account before jumping into the root game. oops on my part, but its kinda nice cuz it makes me dig in and look at the way things work. to retreive my vms, both past (like my 4year old son calling and telling me that when we went through texas, thats where t-rexes lived long ago) and present/new. now that it is working again, NOW i can migrate to gvoice and drop the 2.99 fees!
i suspect there are others in a similar boat...
Hello,
My name is Iris, but you guys can call me Rezz7
I am new to the forum, not to XDA I come here often (long story)
I have a T-Mobile G2 phone that I used Visionary to gain temp root, then I went this route to perm root:
Instructions:
1. The first step is to install Terminal Emulator and a file manager from the Marketplace, such as, Astro file manager.
2. Now insert the SD card to your computer and unzip the “root_files.zip” file (download link given at the bottom of this post) to this SD card (a directory will be created called root_files on the card). When done, unmount the SD card from your computer. Make sure that all the extracted files are directly inside the root_files folder and not in another subfolder inside it.
3. Enable unknown sources (under Settings –> Applications) and USB Debugging (under Settings –> Applications –> Development).
4. Using the file manager (we are using Astro file manager), navigate to the root_files directory on the SD card (created in step 2), and select “com.modaco.visionaryplus.r14.apk” to install the Visionary app.
5. Launch the Visionary app and click on “Temproot now”. Leave the other settings unchecked. Visionary Desire Z Temp Rooting Desire Z
6. Start the terminal app and type the following commands:
$ su
# cp /sdcard/root_files/perm_root /data/local/perm_root
# chmod 777 /data/local*
# /data/local/perm_root
With this ROM: SenseGinger by TeamVillain.v3
I come here often to read on stuff, but see I come from the iphone world, jailbreaking and unlocking is waay more simple than android. Eh!
Ok so my question is the following. I have ROM MANAGER and the phone's recovery is ClockWorkMod Recovery, I downloaded the SenseGinger to the SDCARD, I wipe data, cache and tried to load from SD. I see META-INF
and a system but ....? what am I missing. Where is the big boot?
HEEEELP please
Thanks
what do you mean you tried to load from sd? you need to select flash rom from sd from the rom manager program. your phone will then reboot and start to flash the rom. thats all you need to do.

Do you have root explorer ? It's a great tool to have for rooted devices also if you happen to unzip it again you can use that to re-zip the file (if you have a slow internet connection, i think this way would be faster than downloading the rom again)
ALSO i suggest you try Virtuous rom first because not everything is working on Senseginger yet (i know so sad eh)

Thanks for your advice. Sad? Nooo its tragic, lol.
Right now I have a mega slow connection. Im on a fam plan. I have a nexus one that had an ota like over a month ago for 2.3.3, the g2 im rooting, and my brother has another g2 that im supposed to root.
My interent connection is more than slow. I usually use the nexus one as wifi, or use my brother's phone and mine for the 4g however tmobile is throttling us because we capped our data at 5GB though we have unlimited data, so downloading that senseginger is a pain... that tool you recommended will be useful in the future. Thanks.
I dont know where else to get roms from, I found a few for the G2 from the unlockr website. But I will research what you recommended.

You can view the various roms available in the development sub-forum under the G2 Header. This thread has a list of roms and links to them (as well as various guides and kernels).
Browse and play around with the roms, give them a chance and find out what features you like best. They've all got pros and cons. CM7 (Cyanogenmod 7) is a non sense-based rom that is pretty popular and a stable build was released a few days ago.

Im a bit familiar with Cyanogenmod my ex modded his nexus one all the time. I have had anexus for over a year n never modded it, now i have both the g2 n the nexus. What do you guys know about data throttle? Is there any way to by pass it? I mean we all pay unlimited data, plus the extra for 4g, and the extra for tethering. We should not get throttled...

King size BUG in SenseGinger
I have installed this rom on my G2 like 2-3 days ago.... and this super bug started today. I had to make a call to activate a bank card, so I dial the bank's number, and so when I have to press one for english the phone crashes! I have tried robooting the phone, I deleted the cahe, wiped the user, reinstalled the rom... same issue.
Giant Bug, though we confuse our phones this days with computers, gps or flashlights the truth is... that its a phone .... and lol well, if you can you can't use the phone feature lol ... i find it funny. Kinda' ironic.

???? help???
I know there was a temporary patch that was attached to a post on page 67 that will fix that problem. You basically need to replace the phone.apk.. im personally staying on the old version until they get overclocking on the new version. Also the older version runs flawlessly on my g2 so i really didnt see any reason to upgrade.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
HMM I hear you. I can't say it runs flawlessly. Mines freezes a bit, or it doesn't react quickly. When I slide the notifications down it takes me like two or 3 touches to get them to slide down. Or going through screens it freezes sometimes. But its not something that I can't live with. The thing about the phone kills the mobile network. I have to reboot the phone for it to come back.
Sometimes if you let it sit like 5 minutes the mobile network comes back on its own.... I mean not flawless, the phone app issue is most annoying though. Thank God I wasn't stranded somewhere needing to activate my bank card.
I updated my Vzw GNex to the vzw 4.2.2 ota this afternoon. Everything works fine except when I try to download something from chrome I get a message saying "No SD card" when I click a download link. I can access the sd card just fine with rootexplorer and the stock browser downloads things just fine. I tried clearing cache and data for chrome and even uninstalled and reinstalled it. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a way to fix it?

Try making a copy of your sdcard and factory resetting, then copy all the files over using MTP, not ADB.
I get that if i copy files over using ADB.

Mach - Thank you for your response. I have to ask though, is there any other way?
Per your recommendation I began to copy my sdcard but quickly realized that given the amount of data on my phone this would be painful using standard methods. Windows [7] was reporting no progress and seemed as if it was going to take forever to copy the contents and applications like RichCopy and TeraCopy do not see MTP devices
In the end, I simply used 'adb pull' to copy the contents. So, while it's good that I have a copy, I'm not sure how I plan to restore the copy after a factory reset without using 'adb push', which you said sometimes causes the issue. I always thought that using 'adb' was considered more reliable than the MTP interface.
Recommendations?
Thank you.

Hi, sorry it took a long time to reply, I just saw it. Xprivacy is an Xposed mod to manage the permissions for each app. If you haven't installed it then it is not causing you any problems!
In regards to my aforementioned issue.
"Cannot download due to SD card missing" Error.
Simply open a terminal emulator and type in the following.
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
Reboot and it should work thereafter.
wrong thread, genius, sorry.
(that is the solution though )

Hi. I just switched from 1 custom 4.3 rom to a different one and i did a factory reset. However once i rebooted, i noticed that all my internal SD content had gone into 0/0/0/0 etc. i kept clicking but eventually file explorer on widows just froze.
I went into ES file explorer on my phone and saw the content was behind 400 0's!!!!
Anyone have any idea what i could do to recover that info? every time i try copying the files ES explorer either crashes or says that it had copied the files when it hadnt.
Any help would be greatly apreciated. I'm at my wits end... :crying:
Thanks
Bro you need to use a file explorer from recovery. TWRP custom recovery has a built-in file explorer. That should do the trick

Also, you should update your recovery as the more recent versions have fixed that problem. It doesn't happen each time you flash with the new versions.

On Windoz, You could troll and copy out every 10 deep or 20 deep back to surface and then continue. That'd be better than crashing Explorer.
Dos Prompt is more rugged. You could write a batch script there.

I saw that somewhere and tried that. Doesnt seem to be having any effect. Unless im doing it wrong...
I'm plugging my phone into my computer, accessing the phone section when it comes up, going about 20 0s deep and copying it back to the root. It either crashes my windows explorer, or doesnt seem to be doing anything(i think because its already disconnected itself. i tried making a new folder and it wouldn't let). what am i doing wrong?
PS. how would i access my phones internal SD from DOS?
thanks
Try ADB FileExplorer that should not time out on Windows. I have also tried Android File Manager with success. If that does not work, I will look up other options.
Well i tried android file manager. Im not 100% sure exactly how these programs work, but either way its saying i dont have root access. I do and i also have chainfires adbd insecure app which should give me full root access, but its still not working.
I looked at ADB FileExplorer too, but i didnt really get it and it kept saying it couldnt find my phone and something about an incorrect path.
With the Android File Manager, when it accesses the Phone over ADB, it will ask for Root once. If you don't click SuperSU warning in that time, the File Manager will give this error. Please read its thread carefully. I have connected over ADBWIRELESS and this just fine.

It never asked for root on my phone. I've tried all the changes and everything else that people have recommended, but im still not having any luck. I guess im too much of a noob for all this lol :crying:
Try Re-mounting internal SD in Recovery and then connect to PC.
nope, still no luck. Its still saying no root and no supersu request is coming up. I guess im missing something....
EDIT: I seem to somehow be "losing" root every time i try to connect to the android file manager. i open an app that requires root and it says i dont have root. I have to reboot my phone to get root to work again. It's weird though, because SuperSU opens fine...

If only it was that easy. its behind 400 nested folders. Windows cant go that deep. it freezes and FC's after about 200.
Im giving my phone in to get my power button repaired, so i guess ill ask the software tech there if he can figure it out. But thank you Perseus for all your help last night. :good:
I also have this problem guys, how do i update my custom recovery please?
Alright, I'm running CyanogenMod 11 with TWRP as my recovery. When I try to change my build.prop it tells me that the action is not allowed because the system folder is mounted as Read only and not as R/W. I have tried using the chmod syntax 755 while in recovery but, after rebooting nothing has changed. Using my file manager (Solid Explorer) I have tried changing the permissions to be R/W by using the same chmod syntax. What have I done or am I doing wrong? I have never crossed this issue before with any other ROM or phone and I would like to add some additional speed and smoothness tweaks to the ROM build.prop. Have I tried another ROM to see if the same thing continues to happen? Nope, I sure haven't. If I did though and something magically changes to where it would begin working using another ROM, I still would not know how to fix the issue that I'm faced with now. Will ya please help? Thank you for your time in advance as well!
The drive isn't being mounted by solid Explorer as read/write. I'm not familiar with the app so can't explain how to do it but it may be in the options somewhere or a button on the screen.
You could try es file Explorer. It's free and works for me.
-> Sent from my mind to your screen.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
Well, I just tried ES File Explorer and it said that I'm mounted as R/W on my system folder, same as it did on Solid Explorer, yet once I try to alter anything I still receive the same "Operation Failed......System Mounted as Read Only" message. I have even switched ROM's to see if maybe, just maybe, it was some sort of CM 11 bug. Everywhere I look online says to correct it through my recovery and since that doesn't work..........? I'm at a bit of a loss now! I have granted both file managers Superuser rights. Hell my Superuser auto-response is always set to grant all apps that permission. And as far as the form of Superuser I'm using goes, I'm just sticking with the CM stock Superuser because whenever I attempt to use SuperSU all sorts of stuff begins to fail.
Is your SD card formatted as FAT32....or EXFAT...???
Needs a possible format again it sounds like....IMHO..g
Sent from my NOTE 2.750...

Haven't thought about it possibly being my SD's format being that I am trying to access my systems files (i.e.- build.prop, system apps, etc.) and not the external SD Card, but what the hell?! I reckon I can always give it a shot. Could very well be that simple since I just dropped $100.00 on a stupid Lexar 64 Gig. Micro SD about the same time this issue arose. Hope so even if i do end up feeling like a dumb ass later on. It's getting annoying! I've tried several different ROM's, file managers, running syntax in the emulator, and anything else I could dig up now and this isn't quite my first Android experience, still relatively new though, so I know I'm not flashing anything wrong or outta the ordinary. Give me bit to take care of some every day life crap and I'll report my findings back to ya.
Dead serious, I did not do anything different whatsoever and it began to allow me to change permissions on my system files or whatever else I wished to do to it......?! No Earthly idea what was/did go on for it not to allow me to for the time it didn't, but outta nowhere, as I said, it is working again. I did wipe and flash numerous ROM's without any luck and even had flashed the one that it is working on now, but it didn't work the first or second time I flashed it. Never even got the chance to reformat my SD Card. Hell, I don't know.....!

Running Jellywiz Extreme Rom 4.3 for my Note 2 on Verizon, and ever since i updated it to 4.3 on an unstable original ROM (Davidson3680's OG 4.3 ROM pre-2014), i havent been able to mount system as R/W.
I keep coming back to the possibility that in both of these recent cases that the file structure is somehow corrupted...
A possible 4.3 return to stock using Zen Arcades 4.3 stock rom may correct the file issues and restore the external functionality...
I'm still perplexed about the differences in flashing success based on whether or not a user has taken an official 4.3 update versus a user who has not...and the variables in function using the exact same software's...
The Zen thread method seems to be the stable and reliable way back to full function...or at least the best way to build the file structures back within their respective partitions...
We are playing very near the partition level...but I don't think it's a partition/pit issue....rather the broken file structure inside...
I'd be interested in the results of that test using Zen's files in the attempt to repair the files...and path to the SD...
If you are willing to try that...and meet success...it would solve a good half dozen device issues across different users in one pass....g
