Hello everyone, I obviously have a n00b question. I've searched around but can't quite find anything specific enough.
OK, so I bought my Sprint EVO 4G a few months ago used, and only a few days ago realized that it was rooted (I'm a dummy . I do believe I have full root access judging from info on the restore menu. I don't know if I have a stock ROM or if it was flashed. I don't see anything obvious, but then again this is the only EVO I've messed with.
Here's my phone info: Android version: 2.2 / Baseband: 2.15.00.11.19 / Kernel: 2.6.32.17gee557fd HTC-kernel"at symbol"and18-2#15 / Build Number OMJ's 4.5 / Software Number: 3.70.651.1
Jeesh, a lot of info, I know, sorry. Anyway, what would I need to do to get the latest software (or ROM - gingerbread?) and keep full functionality such as wifi, 3g, 4g, tethering (i have wifi tether) etc? I'm not even sure what I could be missing now, I haven't had a chance to try 4g.
I would like to stay rooted and be able to tweak. I don't know if the phone has ever had an actual sprint update or not. I don't know what root technique was used or anything. I'm lost.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Dan.
Do this: Battery pull then hold your volume down button and power button until a white screen comes up then tell me what it says there.
Looks like you're running OMJ's rom. Google "Evo OMJ Rom" and you'll see what i mean.
Yeah omj is a rooted ROM so your on a costume ROM ,to check if you have full root (s-off) go to your bootloader by either hold down power and when the menu pops up you might have the option to reboot to bootloader or download an app you can use quick boot or turn the phone off and turn it back on by holding volume down and power then look at the top and see if it says s-on or s-off . If your s-off you have full root .
Then just read up on flashing ROMs and mods check out the developer section for ROMs

Ok, I checked and it says s-off. That's cool. Do I need to do anything special since I have 2.2 or can I flash right to a gingerbread Rom? I've read conflicting stories. Thanks everyone.

It all depends on the ROM and there are steps you need to take before flashing anything like making a nandroid backup and proper wiping so make sure to read as much as you can if you need help with anything you can PM me.

If you're rooted just flash a rooted rom, there's a few out already.
And: post in the right section.

My bad on posting in the wrong place, im on my phone and figured someone in this section would be the first to know, I appologize. I flashed a rom already with the new ota but I want to update the radio and 4g too and I read that aside from the possibilites of having 4g connection issues via bad mac addresses the new radio will cause problems with my old hboot and once I go to the 2.10 version rooting is not possible. I was just looking for any info saying otherwise but its a bit hard on the phone app to scroll through everything. I'll just wait until someone gets the root working and then unroot via s-on ,ruu back to stock 3.29 and dl the ota via HTC software update. Thanks for the time.

Confirmed working

just got this working about an hr ago so give it a shot
I have flashed the newest Radio/Wimax and it doesn't take? After the flash it says to install reboot from the recovery menu. I do that, it starts to reboot, goes right back into recovery. It says formating CACHE..... at the bottom, but does nothing (I waited for 20 minutes). When I reboot, and check the radio, I'm still on 2.15.00.09.01. any suggestions?
Go over to Calk's post in development and download the previous versions and flash it/them....this should help you!
Updating the radio can, more often than not, be more trouble than its worth.....let me know if you need more help

ya, that's actually where I downloaded from.
just for anyone's future info with the same problem, I figured out my particular problem. I changed from RA to Clockwork Recovery. Don't know why but that did the trick. I'll probably go back to RA for wiping reasons though.
Hey I'm just coming from the Hero forums (much respect to those guys, they deserve it) and I now have an Evo 4g. So basically after reading up and trying unrevoked 3.21 I still cant find a way to root my evo. Any suggestions.
I would also perfer the simplest way possible but please provide any info you think I should know.
Heres my Evo's info:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e [email protected]#11 (could some one confirm whether this is open gl es 2.0 or not?)
Build Number: 3.29.615.5 CL252548 release-keys
Software number: 3.20.615.5
Browser version: Webkit 3.1
PRI: 1.77_003
prl: 60670
If there is a unrevoked version that I havent heard about it would be really nice if you guys let me know about it. And a step by step for it would be cool. But dont forget I can to it the hard way through ADB as well. But I just really dont have the time.

If you have hboot 2.02 or 2.10 you can root the evo following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045

Your Hboot # is what's going to tell you how much (or how little) of a pain rooting your Evo is going to be
check this thread out too since he has pretty solid video walk through's. as others have stated the hboot is really going to drive your root method
linky
Ok I kind of got inpatient and jumped the gun. I used the latest Unrevoked and rooted the device. Or at least it seems to be rooted. I have the superuser app but its the 2.1 version with the black ops guy instead of the pirate andy thats in the current market. Dont know if this is because of the current from that comes with HTC and sprint. During the install the program booted into clockwork recovery so I guess that makes it official.
I am going to start my nandroid backup now.
EDIT: I havent the faintest idea on how to boot into revocery. I just tried to hold down the volume down button but that just sent me into the HBoot screen. With the Hero we just hold down the power button but the evo has capacitive ones. Any ideas while I search. Ill prolly just youtube it though.
The 2.1 root has the black ops guy. The rooted 2.2 has the pirate. Good job on root. Great call on nandroid and good luck on finding the best rom kernel combos for you!

I see. Well i guess the only way to boot into recovery is through hboot so i guess thats it. And yeah thanks for the info on the superuser.
Pretty stocked for the Sense HD roms. If they get Wimax running I can have my cake and eat it too.
To boot into recovery, make sure the evo is off and then hold volume down and then hold power until u boot into white screen...this will boot you into bootloader....wait 15 seconds or so and the evo will look for the pc36img file and not find it ( this is normal) scroll down to recovery option with volume down and then press power to load into recovery

Yeah ive seen it. Not a big fan of the skins and user interface but I can get used to it if it runs sweet. Is this myn 2.2 the fastest rom?
Myns rom is the smoothest rom that I have used. I use it with a netarchy kernel. The stock rooted 2.2 rom with htc 15 or 17 kernel is awesome too. You really can't go wrong either way,its all about personal preference...just make sure you nandroid backup everything just in case a flash goes wrong, but im sure you know that....I spent alot of time choosing the right rom kernel combo...there are alot of sense based roms out there that have 4 g working, so you have alot to chose from!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If you like the look of sense the sprint lovers rom is a great choice.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah ill give the Myn 2.2 a try. But yeah its gonna be a really good christmas break flashing and testing all of these roms lol. Good times.
EDIT: whats this im hearing about standalone roms without radios installed and ones with it? If I flash a rom with a radio will that permanently change my radios?
Im not new to XDA tho, I've been on the Epic forums for a few years. But I couldn't take the lack of support the Epic has. So i just traded in my Epic today and I was wondering what the best, most stable way to root, and install a custom recovery on my Evo. Also, I'm not new to flashing, or adb shell. I know there's a few different ways to root, and install a custom recovery, so I'd be very grateful for someone to point me in the right direction. I heard that the Evo forums are the best at XDA. Thanks so much for your help.

We haz some good people here.
Easiest method is to use unrevoked; download the hboot drivers, install then uninstall htc sync, enable usb debugging on phone, then run the program.
For recovery, it'll come with clockwork [unrevoked flashes it], you can then switch to amon_ra if you wish via PC36IMG file; both can be found in the development section.
And welcome, be wary of the trolls, don't feed them.
If ur phone has the newest software (2.3) on it then u r SOL. If ur are still on stock 2.2 then just run unrevoked or look for the auto-root thread and follow that.

if you are using Gingerbread (software 4.22.651.2 or the new OTA: 4.24.651.1), there is no method of root just yet.
but if you are running FroYo (3.70.651.1) you are in luck
the method i used was this: [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Goodbye Stranger - Upd. 02.25.11 - xda-developers
but you can use any of the ones that are in the stickies in the Development section
after you are rooted, I highly recommend using Amon_RA recovery (and so do most on xda lol) follow the instructions in this thread: [Recovery] [09-Feb-2011] RA-supersonic-v2.3 - xda-developers
hope this helps you out. and welcome to the rEVOlution!!
I got 2.2 on my phone. Thanks very much for the help guys/girls. So what would happen if I had 2.3, instead of 2.2?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You would have a locked bootloader that couldn't be rooted since there is no root method yet glad you still have 2.2

I came from your exact situation and I can tell you this THIS PHONE IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more supported and FIXES are HERE! and not in the works =P like the (EPIC)
I'll answer your questions with what I did and also point out that the method I have used for root isn't the most recommended way.
Unrevoked is what used to root do it at your own risk people say, my response(It works for me) ALSO YOU CAN'T ROOT IF YOUR ALREADY on Gingerbread =/ so if you are you gotta wait till they figure out how to root it.
Also I came from an epic i KIND OF FELL in love with Miui rom on the EPIC EVEN WITH ITS bugs, battery on Miui is amazing I also love having just 1 homescreen with 3 folders of apps(tools,Misc/Games/Navigation) BW clock so easy to find what I need and the app management and ect is so fluid even settings menu and all menus for that matter ARE FAST and the built in explorer app is fantastic... try miui for evo u wont regret it my man!
flash amon ra recovery! dont use clockwork its buggy sometimes
if you need detailed instructions i dont have them in front of me and im not a big fan of XDA's search it kind of sucks NO OFFENSE but the filtering process needs work it should be like the forum.mobilisim.org BY FAR THE BEST SEARCH PROCESS! always gets me what I want in 1 search
Definitely try MIUI rom its the best its very sexy
I actually had like six girls tell me my phone was sexy

i recently updated to the new gingerbread 2.3 OTA update. I did do some research before updateing but i obviously didnt do enough because i missed the part that 2.3 is unrootable. Today i was doing some searches and saw a few posts that said if you had previously flashed unrevoked forever to your evo. you could reflash back to a previous version. m question is if that is possible and how?
If you still have s-off it is possible
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
if you had previously rooted with unrevoked forever, you will still have S-OFF. to check it, power down then hold volume down and the power button...it'll take you to the HBOOT screen. check the top of the screen....it'll tell you if you are S-OFF or S-ON...if S-OFF, reflash a custom recovery (either Amon_RA or ClockworkMOD; i recommend Amon_RA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026) and then you can reboot into recovery and start flashing away again

Ok it ways s-on. Now that I think about it I remember having to turn it back to s-on in order to flash the OTA update. I was under the impression that no matter what you did unrevoked forever would keep your phone flashable even with the s-on. I think I missed something. This is my first Android phone I've had Windows mobile for so long I'm still adjusting to how all the technical things work. Thanks for all your help and patience. So is it possible to somehow revert back or flash something to turn s-off? Or to make it reversible to a version that's rootable?
