The Phone is prompting me to upgrade to 1.47...I'm holding off. Which version should I root?
I had a question / thought about that too...but I didn't get that upgrade notification, is your phone rooted already?
Root the current version THEN update using a ROOTED rom from here DO NOT DO THE OVER THE AIR UPDATE

Root 1.32. It's much, much easier to accomplish.
stang doug, this route is the best..

It still puts ya at 2.1.. But really is solid.
This us a replacement phone....I was upgrading to a custom 2.2 from available and the phone bricked. I was lucky to get another one today. Just want to be carefully this time!

Yes. Take the 47 ota so that your wimax updates correctly.

Ok I did the update to 1.47...went smooth....I rooted from 1.47 before with no problem...one step at a time I guess...still can't believe I bricked the last one...ok so what's the best/easiest root method now with nand unlock? I fumbled my through it the first time...just want to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing this time.

Sorry for my spelling before...I was trying to install avas official 2.2 and the phone bricked while installing the radio upgrade....was doing everything step by step too......

Update: I rooted using Unrevoked 3, have clockwork mod recovery installed and just made a backup using nandroid. Am I basically ready to flash a custom ROM? Do I need to upgrade the radios first if going to 2.2?

Install the old hboot. If that doesn't make sense, get the simpleroot app and use that.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I had trouble with Simpleroot. If i stick with this hboot version, will I have problems? Also I just succsesfully installed the latest Wimax and radio updates.
Follow a post in this forum that describes full root with nand unlocking using a more manual method.

I did, but kept getting main version older while trying to update PC36IMG. Maybee I'm SOL. Should I not bother to download and flash custom roms?
I tried 3 root methods last night and I could only get unrevoked3 to work.

Just got simplerrot to work!!! So it reset my softwre to a earlier version, and flashed clockmod recovery. Question is do I need to reflash the wimax update? I allready am running the latest radio version. Don't want to brick this time!
Oh my bad. Looks like the radio and wimax reverted to earlier versions....is it ok to update thm to the current release? Still running the stock rom.
ok, dosen't look like I have root access...but I have access to nandroid?
Well I don't know if this is right but I used Simpleroot to revert the software and get the older version of HBOOT and used unrevoked to get root permission. Looks like rooted apps work, I can back and recover with nandroid, maybe some one can chime in to make sure I'm on the right track, still need to know if it's safe to upgrade the radio and wimax.
So here's where I sit:

yes u are rooted, as long as you can enter the custom recovery and flash a different rom you are. you can get flamed by posting this questions in the dev section...
thanks for responding and i cant enter custom recovery any more now that i used that 1.35 ota update by cheifsreloaded it broke root but will tmobile take it under warranty

you should since that rom is rooted as well, just go into recovery and choose apply update.zip.. if you deleted the file from your sdcard then just put it back... the same way you did to enter and do the nandroid or flash that rom... read a couple of tutorials and you should figure it out on your own
no dude what i did was used a backup by falken never b4 rooted rom and flashed it with ota 1.35 and put latest radio on and now even when i use update.zip it says installation aborted which means im not rooted right and can i send in for warranty exchange and is the latest slide radio is official tmobile radio?
After you've rooted a device you should never update with something official, just wait for someone to post a rooted version. You can use nbetcher's root method to regain root, it works with the update. This should also be moved to Q&A (not flaming just saying). If you manage to get into clockwork install CR_Mod_OTA, it comes with the newest radio and everything else, it's the updated stock ROM rooted.

I don't think anyone is getting the question he wants to no for warranty purposes. No your not rooted anymore after applying the update posted by chiefz. You flashed the unrooted version which broke root so you are good to go. Everything is official and up to date

Well...your first mistake was not making a nandroid back up of your stock rom..that would solve this problem quick. As with anything "computer" related always make a back up before changing everything

While this is good advice, it's not really a useful post to respond to this question about. I'm researching the same type of issue for someone and this response has only been useful as an annoyance.

Couple things,
If you install the official OTA update, you will lose root, and will not be able to get it back. Its not currently rootable, and AFAIK, people are having trouble even downgrading from the official Gingerbread OTA in order to root. So bottom line, official GB OTA is a bad idea if you want root.
Second, the official GB update is posted in the Development section, so you don't need to mess with going back to stock in order to get the OTA, if you still want to install the official GB update.
Third, there is a pre-rooted version of the GB update, also in the Development section. So THAT is probably what you really want.
Forth, the RUU you are trying to install is not the stock T-Mobile ROM. Its a stock Desire Z ROM (with Sense). Again, you will lose root if you flash an official ROM, but this one (1.34) is actually rootable. You should still be able to install it anyway, so I'm not sure what the issue is. You're trying to run the RUU from your computer, right? Its not one you flash from ROM Manager.

Alright. I own a droid x and it is extremely simple to root and unroot. My bro-in-law had me help him root his evo using unrevoked3. Now he wants the GB update but cannot get it. Long story short. I flashed the s-on file and it worked. However, when I put the pc36img.zip on the sd card and enter the bootloader, it automatically starts searching the image and I get the error below.
Main version is older!
Update failed
2.15.00.11.19 baseband
Android 2.2 stock everything.
Can someone please help me get his evo unrooted?

Why are you unrooting his device? If it's to get the OTA 2.3.3 update, wouldn't it be easier to flash a rooted stock froyo rom, go to the system update setting and then update? Of course, I'm assuming that is what you're trying to do so forgive me if I misunderstood your post.

Ok, sorry for not being very informed. He tried to update to the ota but it failed. I assumed that it must be because the s-off since he hadn't done anything but tether.
He really has no need to be rooted because the only thing he wanted todo was tether. Now, I have turned the s-on, but the pc36img fails to update.
Is it safe to just check for/install the system up? Or does the phone need to be unrooted?

If you already have S-On, all you need to do is flash the ruu that coincides with software 3.70 or 3.29. You can download any of the ruus for the EVO by clicking on the RUU link in my signature. Also, there's a link to rooted stock roms in my link, as well.

Honestly, my bro-in-law doesn't need root. Here I am trying to fix his problem. I've spent more time on this than I should. I mod my X, but the evo confuses me some.
Are you saying he can take the ota rooted, with s-on?
You need S-Off for permanent root and ability to flash custom ROMs. So before you take the OTA for him, as long as the phone is 2.2, run Unrevoked once again and install AmonRa.
Does he even like Sense? I would suggest trying one of the setups from my sig, or even MIUI if he doesn't need 4G.
You could have S-On and get the OTA, which would make his phone unrootable and boring, or you could just root back and flash a ROM with better battery life (I hear that Calkulin's works great, but so do other ROMs)
Before you do anything, try showing him pictures of MIUI, SalvageMod, MikG or another ROM and ask what he likes best.

Oh, and he would need a custom ROM with tethering unlocked for the ability to tether for free. And he would need S-Off to put that ROM on.

I understood from your earlier post that your brother-in-law didn't need root and thus the reasons for the answers I gave. Yes, he can accept the OTA while S-ON and he will indeed upgrade his device to 2.3.3, however, should he wish to unroot afterwards, he won't be able to until an exploit can be found. I take it your friend isn't the type of person who flashes roms, mods, kernels and such.

check your hboot version and S off status
if its hboot 2.16 and S on, you are boned since you unrooted it when you took the gb update
so basically...dont tell your friend that you screwed his chances to root yourself lol
the correct route would have been to flash with a rooted stock GB ota wich was already out there, but its too late now : /

you can thether without being rooted
download pdanet app on phone and on pc you want to tether on
hotspot requires root or paying sprint though
I really appreciate everyones help, don't get me wrong. However, I'm sitting here doing all this research and trying to get help for my in-law who thought he needed root and wanted to tether. He doesn't even use tether. I'm not showing him any custom roms. He lives three hours away and i'd be doing all his leg work/fixing his problems.
All I want to do (and him as well) is get him to gb stock unrooted and be done with his phone.
So, if the s-on is on, but the su app is still in the app drawer, and the pc36img.zip failed. If he selects settings>about phone>check for updates, will this get him to gb?

As of right now T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 known as SGH-T999UVLEM is upgrading to a newer Version which is SGH-T999UVLH2
I don't think the over the air (OTA) mode is working right now because I did many tries and it keep saying device up to date so if you want to try it us KIES. if you version of KIES is not up to date you will have to update it first then you will be able to upgrade the phone.
it will take about 10 to 15 minutes of your time and it will depend on your connection.
everything like root will be gone after the update. :victory:
ok after you update, you will be able to go back and use the same method you use to to root the older version and install a different boot.
mine is working fine I don't find any problem yet.
