I've looked through the other battery life thread, but I didn't see many people posting easily comparable data so I figured i'd see if my usage was normal compared to others.
I've recently noticed that my standby current (screen off, background data on) hovers consistently in the 50-60mA range. I'm using Battery Monitor Widget from the market to obtain the data. I don't remember if I had this with stock as the battery life was great so I didn't pay much attention.
I'm currently running Skyraider, but have had the same usage issue with AOSP roms (MIUI, CM7) and it doesn't seem to matter what's installed or whether or not the radios are turned on. Standby current never goes lower than about 50mA.
Anybody else using battery monitor widget or something similar care to post your average usage? Listing whether or not you're stock or rooted and what rom you are on would also be helpful.
Thanks.
I'm going to assume that no reply's means everyone is either happy with their battery life or nobody uses a current monitoring widget.
Just wondering why my Inc2 has a ~50mA standby current and a lot of other android phones seem to be able to keep that below 10mA. Some data from another user would help pinpoint if it's just my phone or the Inc2 in general.
My stanby by drain is also pretty high compared to other phones I've tried everything I could think of to track it down with no luck. Maybe its just the inc2

I guess it's good to know i'm not the only one. It's not that my battery life is horrible, it's just that it seems like it could be so much better if the standby drain was reduced.
I feel the same way. under battery use my idle percent was 1 on my inspire. on this phone i've seen it as high as ten. no screen off profiles or disabling widgets helps. I have no rogue apps either. it must be my phone

I havent played much with the DroidX but from what I have read it has a power profile managment on it much like a laptop . I believe that is the part Motorola put in the phone . Profiles like LONGER BATTERY LIFE , or MORE PERFORMANCE . Something Im kinda surprised the EVO wasnt given but I make it thorugh the day on one charge
Are you rooted?

Please keep in mind the apps you downloaded and the widgets you have set-up on your screens. Some apps require to be run in the background eventhough they are NOT used by you at the time, such as Google Talk, Qik, Fring, pedometer, and anything that needs to be "ON"...thats one of the culprit on battery drain you might want to look into.
Having one widget per homescreen is ideal, in my opinion..and learned that by having multiple widgets in one screen, is another culprit in battery drain due to it requiring to work upfront, for example, Facebook widget needs to be on constantly and updated for as long as that widget is there, regardless if you touched/used it or not.
Now, for the MOST OBVIOUS part...turning off GPS, WiFi, 4G, and bs when you DON'T need them, by following hot sexy COMMON SENSE, you should get AT LEAST 3 hours more on your battery. Pure sexy common sense LOL ;-)

Greetings,
I couldn't agree more with all the things you noted in your reply.
I rooted mine, and deleted many apps I don't use, but insisted on starting up
even if I had already killed them in the manage applications section.
But I was amazed at how short the life was in spite of having done that. I quickly
discovered (as you noted) that keeping 4G on, drains the batt.
In fact, for me anyway, it really drains the batt!
Just thought I'd mention it, because it was really surprising to me just how bad
an affect on the battery 4G was - bummer.
--Chris
Mine usually gets between 36-55 hours on a charge (record is 58 so far) with about 3-5 hours of "use" on the stock battery. I don't use it to play games or watch movies, just phone, internet, email, etc - widgets all over the place. Gmail push is always on as well. In fact, I unplugged it last at 10:50pm on the 28th (34 hours ago) and I'm at 48% still.
The biggest thing I've found is download setCPU and adjust the CPU frequency to 245 MHz when the screen is off. That saves a lot. Other then that I keep it at 998 MHz (max speed) all other times. I am playing around with tasker and turning airplane mode on while I sleep, but that seems to have a minimal effect, saving around 2% over 8 hours. I use tasker to turn GPS off unless I'm using one of my GPS-enabled programs, although that doesn't seem to do much either.
I'm running just a basic sense rom with a stock kernel, nothing special. rooted with clockworkmod and that's all I've done rom/kernel-wise.
If you actually use your phone a lot I'm not sure there's much you can do besides get a bigger battery. If you just use it mostly as a phone and less as a PMP or gaming device you should be able to get some nice results.
EDIT: Oh yea, and don't use a task killer (I don't). From what I've read those can actually cause the phone to consume MORE power as services are being killed and opened constantly. Android is very good about leaving tasks open in the background without them consuming power. Opening and closing them constantly is another story.
I wish I could figure this out too. I've been switching between a ton of kernels and roms and can't seem to find anything with good battery life. My phones been unplugged for about 2 1/2 hours and I'm at 53% battery life. No widgets running and just average usage.
Running virusrom and kings #9 and a lot of other roms and battery life is a joke.

So far, the best battery combo I've found is fresh 3.2 with it's stock rom and I returned to it last night. Some say 3.3 is as good or better but I can't seem to get those same results...
But my real question is, why is the droid able to get such great life?

What I have found to help most of all is to NOT use the Mail app - it drains the battery like crazy, especially if you are popping several accounts. Instead, use the gmail client and set it up to pop your other accounts, and push them to you. This literally trippled my battery life. And it is way faster than the 15 minute intervals that the mail app gives you. Give it a shot, you will be pleasantly surprised.
A friend and I both have a desire, updated to the latest version of Android and running 5.09 radio. Neither of us use it extensively and I can get easily through the day on a charge, mostly having upwards of 30% battery charge left when I go to bed, while his can barely do 8 hours before needing a recharge.
He's already taken it to the store to have it looked at once and it came back performing the same.
I've been looking at his currentwidget log and the consumption seems fine to me, however the battery drain is much larger than I'd expect in return.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? Please help!
Are you two using same ROMs..??
I'm rooted, he's not, but I'm using basically the same thing. My battery usage hasn't changed, while upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2, his hasn't either. But his has been crap from the beginning.
Swap phones for a few days. Perhaps he's in an area where by reception is poor compared to you. The phone would use more power trying to get a better signal?
Sent using XDA App
Does he play games all the time? Does he use GPS, Bluetooth, WLAN? And you?
how does it perform in airplane mode?
Install Android System Info and take a look at the task list, CPU load should hover around 10-20% after a few seconds. If it's higher find the task and report back.
He said if he just leaves it on the shelf with sync disabled, no calls and no notifications, it gets 12 hours tops. I get 48 like that.
Does he use Live Wallpaper? I found out that if I use a plain picture instead of live wallpaper, the power drain is much lower.
Has anyone even looked at the currentwidget log?

Yep, and you're losing battery very fast in what looks to be an idle phone. Every few minutes the power drain is shooting up for a period and then fluctuating to higher than it should be in idle (between 7-70mA drain in idle means the phone isn't idle). Many services and widgets that are known as power hungry seem to be running too. Due to the logging limitations, I can't see if they are the ones causing power fluctuations or otherwise.
I mean, have you done any one hour experimentation with cell on vs. cell off to see the battery loss differences?
What about cell off, display off for an hour vs. cell on, display on for an hour - what are the percentage drops in both cases for the device?

Can't really test like that, since he lives 150kms away. I'll see if he can lend the phone to me for a few days and I'll run both in an as identical manner as I can.
If people like andycted and bemymonkey have much spare time to reply, that would help you much since I consider them more expert in this area (they know far more than me).

Calibrate the battery?
I have poor battery life on my desire, it barely lasts 7 hours. I have tried wiping battery stats etc, and have the screen brightness at 50%. I have read that some kernels can greatly improve battery life, is this true? If so, which would you recommend, and do I just flash it like I would a rom? I am using the latest miui.
Cheers,
Steve

They can but finding the underlying app causing the phone not to sleep would be what I'd be looking at. Remove all installed apps and add them 1 at a time and see how the battery goes

Yeah i've tried this, there's nothing draining the battery.
Not at all
Such battery drainage can only be induced by either heavy usage, or phone not being able to go to sleep.
The differences between kernels in custom roms are merely a shades since all of them are pretty much battery efficient. You won't miraculously jump from battery life of 7 hours to 30 hours. Concentrate on your apps or even better, third party Widgets.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Probably a hardware fault then - the OS on it's own with no apps installed shouldn't drain a battery that quickly. Did you also turn off the sync options to test that theory?
Personally sounds like a knackered battery/phone
If it isn't apps/widgets (they are the culprit for heavy usage) then it would prob be a faulty battery. I did a little test last month to see how much battery I could lose in 24 hours. I lost 8%. I guess it could be a baseline to start off with.
My Desire Z has been a battery killer recently. I have tried different radios and roms and it still sucks excessive power. Even on Airplane mode battery monitor widget was giving ~50mah per hour drain with the screen off.
I have both a stock battery and a Mugen 1800ma battery and this seems excessive. I checked and there were no applications keeping the phone awake either. At work with minimal usage my phone easily drains over 30% of the Mugen battery. Signal isn't a problem either because I work 280 metres away from a Bell cell tower and have full signal at work all the time. I'm starting to think that something is wrong with my phone.

I had a similar problem with a stock battery of mine and ended up recalling it with my phone provider and they shipped me a new one. They (T-Mobile) said "not all batteries were created equal" and that sometimes even without water-damage, certain batteries lose their shelf-life much faster than others.
Since you're telling us that both your stock and your after-market are draining at a near equal pace regardless, this might be an indicator that it isn't your battery.
I had to return my original G2 to T-Mobile because of hardware malfunctioning in several areas, namely the audio mechanisms. If you're using a relatively new phone, and/or a refurbished phone, I wouldn't be surprised if you are experiencing similar problems.
Omg, recently, mines been really bad too. Trying to get to the bottom of it.

I had fast battery drain too, I switched to the ROM in this thread, and battery life is now AMAZING
use SuperWipeG2(+) and Guhl's EFS GPS fix available here before flashing G-lite
Have you tried calibrating? Charging to full, wiping batt stats, discharging/charging back to full uninterrupted? The link below is a great calibration tool.... very convenient. I wipe stats after every ROM flash and keep an eye on CPU/RAM usage with Watchdog lite. Battery life is always good.

how long does the battery last for aprox in standby and with regular use. if it dies faster then 3days on standby or less then a day with regular use there may be an issue im just wanting to know the time span of your battery....
also i had hardware issues with the g2 too. my radio sucked balls, i couldnt even keep signal in a call longer then 3 seconds and my wifi would just cut out for periods of hours at a time... im wondering if the manufacturing is becoming sloppy and they might be lacking quality control. i admit there is a lot to the phone but simple things like battery quality and signal quality should be checked regularly.
with the g2 i frequently hear things like this, battery, screen failures or behind the screen cracks, unresponsive touch screen and black spots, bad radio signals, color leakage and most commonly issues with the keyboard.

Well if battery monitor widget is correct my phone would last 26 hours in airplane mode (36 with my mugen battery) with the screen off (I tested this with almost every user app uninstalled)
Edit:
Considering there was a guy who left his old Hero with CM7 in airplane mode and that it lasted for 30 days before the battery died... I find this quite discouraging

Wow. Battery monitor widget is INCREDIBLY innacurate while in airplane mode. I left my phone in it for a good 10 hours and it was still at 100%
Disregard this post... and thread

For those of you unfamiliar, JuiceDefender is a tool which toggles WiFi and Data when the phone is off, and turns on WiFi only when in a location where there's an accessible network. This software more than doubled my battery life on my Bionic, and so it was one of the first things installed on my phone.
I've noticed JuiceDefender has been sucking a fair amount of battery on ICS/GNex (usually 4% in the battery graph), so today, for an experiment, I uninstalled it for the day, and I've noticed that I've gotten better battery life than I ever have with the phone, across a mix of WiFi areas and 3G.
Has anybody else had this experience, or was this just an odd one-off situation? Could there have been a change in ICS which diminishes the need or hurts the usefulness of it?
I've had JuiceDefender off too and for me I seem to get slightly worse battery without JuiceDefender. Without JuiceDefender on I tend to get a steeper battery drain during idle times compared to leaving wifi and 3G on. I think the usefulness of it depends a lot on your usage habit and signal quality as well. I usually get spotty signals so that is probably why JD helps noticeably.
Interestingly though if you take a look at the battery graph in settings, every time JD toggles your data on it seems to force the phone into awake state, but just leaving data on would keep the phone in an idle state most of the time. That's definitely something that is making JD not as good as if should be.

Honestly I think the only time you get noticeable battery improvements with juice defender is with periods of no use. Which is why it works good for me, on work days that is

Totally agree with this.
That's odd, as for me, the phone is mostly in my pocket all day. Maybe it's because I've got a 15 minute synchronization time for most things?
Day three without JD, still getting twice the battery life that I was getting with it on. Delightful.
I don't like any Kind of app that claims IT saves battery life because it just doesn't work! Fact is that its just another apps that sucks resources out of your phone!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Going to have to disagree and while there are many variables juicedefender can offer big saves depending on your usage. I have had 1.6x increase as stated in the app and confirmed by the extra hours with the incredible. I am waiting to try it with the GN until I have a idea what battery life is without it. First week is useless anyways with a new device as you check it more often and the OS is still refining the battery meter.
Its all related to how you use your phone. Disabling Wifi, Data, BT and so on automatically, managing autosync saves battery. The app itself sucks almost no battery power - if i can believe my monitoring app (SystemPanel 1.1.1) which i use unfrequently to control app behaviour on my Galaxy S1 (with ICS and before that, on GB). Im taking up this "Old" posting because i have battery issues on ICS - almost half of the lifetime after upgrading from GB. But i think its because im now more playing around with the phone, no app is sucking more power than usual.
I noticed that JD cant control networking (via apn change) anymore, can somebody confirm that? If i turn the display on, my 3G/HSDPA connection is there - under GB it took 3-5 seconds until i had internet connectivity back.
