[Q] Dalvik on sd ext missing - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have my dalvik on my sd card on an ext partition. I reboot my phone every day and this morning when I rebooted my phone I noticed that everything that was on the ext partition is missing. The apps I have installed on the sd card is fine. I have apps missing that was installed to ext partition as well as the market app.
One thing that may have impacted this was that there was an update to Busybox yesterday and I installed that. Not sure if that was it or not, just wanted to mention it.
Is there a way to get this corrected other than another flash of Cyanogen?

What method of a2sd+ are you using?
Dark Tremor a2sd? Simple2ext?

I used the S2E app from the market. That's missing from my apps too.

If you re-install it (does it let you)? can you then select dalvik to be moved also?
Do any other 3rd party apps work?

Titanium Backup stops at checking license and I ROM manager is missing. I guess that's how I can reflash Gapps?
So it's sounding like I need to reflash my ROM huh?

Its no bad thing that rom manager is missing. Flash gapps from recovery (you know, Vol down plus power from off).
Sounds like an issue with your ext partition.
If s2e creates a link to ext then migrates itself over there thats pretty crap for reasons like this.
Would suggest perhaps using dark tremor a2sd script next time...

I ended up deleting the partition and re-partitioning in recovery and reflashed.

Ok, so I finally upgraded to Android 2.2 and moved all my applications (except a few that don't work like that) over to my SD Card thanks to the hack.
Yet I still only have 43MB/147MB...Whats the deal?
Go into Manage Applications and delete data and cache of your apps. The Dolphin browser had something like 50mb of user data for me. Stopped using it now

its because you using legacy apps2sd as apposed to apps2sd+, legacy apps2sd only stores the .apk on the sd card, where as apps2sd+ moves alot more of the program data and cache' to the sd card

Well, eventually we won't need Mod Install or apps2sd+ to do it right, developers will make there apps do it auto? no...
Seems like I have enough space right now, much more then I did before hand, with 2.1. So should be fine. I just found it weird.

How does one go about installing Apps2SD+ manually, without resorting to flashing a custom rom (as there are some members here who, like myself, prefer stock roms)?

if your rooted you just need an apps2sd update.zip and flash it from recovery, becareful tho most of the ones ive seen on google are for eclair and wont work with froyo, maybe post a thread in the android development section asking someone to make you one, it wont take a skilled person long

I am rooted (via UnRevoked), and have even got a nice class 6 card already partitioned and waiting.
Surely if it wouldn't take a skilled person long to do it someone would have done it by now? I've seen a few requests in these forums since Froyo was released asking how to install apps2sd, and yet they all either get ignored or pointed towards a custom rom. It's almost as if the people who know how to do it want to keep the secret to themselves!

Custom ROM problems

everytime ive installed a custom rom it breaks after i reboot the phone.
ive tried gingerburst, insertCoin, aceSmod for HTC desire and they dont work very well at all...
after i reboot the phone after restoring via titanium backup my widgets get messed up and my htc people app doesnt work properly either.
am i restoring it wrong or something with titanium backup? :S has anyone else came across this problem?
With your apps that the widgets are based on, are they saved to internal storage? Because if they're saved to sd card they will not work, they must be in internal storage to work.

i click on menu>batches>restore all apps with data then select all and restore. take it this is bad then?
^No need to restore system apps (the ones in red), because your new system apps are the ones that came with your new ROM. Restore only user apps + data.
thanks guys

Unless one is using a2sd+. Then android "thinks" they are still stored in internal memory (although they are stored in ext partition of sd card) and so the widgets still work.
just installed a custom ROM again and restored with titanium backup.
this time i only backed up the green apps/data and only restored the green apps/data as well.
still the same problem though after first reboot.
Do you run a complete wipe when you flash a new rom? I suggest to delete ALL backups made with titanium backup, run a complete new one, flash new rom with complete wipe, reboot after first boot of the new rom, and then restore apps + userdata with tb.
If this does not help, install all apps manually and only restore their data with tb.

yes, i do run a complete wipe. i will try again later thanks.
MatDroid, I think if he has more than a hundred user apps (like me), it'd be bloody to re-install apps manually. This can often be fixed by Root Toolbox's "Fix Permissions" function, which fixes broken market links and mismatched backups/restores. Dunno if the free version of RT has it though, as I'm using the paid Pro version.

Rom question

I started checking out some roms to flash and saw something that caught my attention. No all, but a cpl roms say "wipe data, dalvik, cache, system, sdext". i am running Energy 1/12/12 sense 3.5 rom with anthrax kernel and dt a2sd. If i wipe my sdext wont all my apps be gone? is this step necessary? do i just need to avoid these roms or is there another way to restore my apps? or woould i have to make sure they are backed up in Tibackup then redownload from market and then restore data after flashing new rom?
You should do that procedure with ANY rom. Yes, your apps will be gone, but that's a good thing, means the rom will run smoothly and not have "leftover" bits from old roms. Use Titanium Backup to backup and restore your apps.

You can reinstall those too. Those purchases are linked to your Google account, so when Market signs into your Google account, it will know what apps you've paid for, and you can simply re-download them.

Capt, sorry for being such a noob, but i thought the there were 2 reasons for partitioning your sd card...1. save internal space and 2. save apps so that you could jsut restore them when you flashed different roms. I am trying to learn as much as i can about this stuff.

Actually there is no 2. The reason to partition is to get more internal space and so your able to manage your storage settings to your liking

And, because I am the king of overkill, I also make sure all my apps are on a list in appbrain so I have a handy list to go to if I have any problems with titanium backup or want to do completely fresh installs for any reason.
Yea Titanium will backup both the app AND it's associated data (i.e. game saves). If you buy the pro version (VERY worth it) you can backup and restore all your apps with one click.
But as everyone else said, your paid apps are always remembered from the market, so you can always just re-download them. This won't save your app's data, but it can be done.
You can now also use Google to backup and restore your apps and when u sign in on a fresh install it reinstalls all your apps from the market but its slower than tibu since the download and install instead of just installing from a compressed backup on your SD
Edit: also mybackuproot will backup.and install apps with one click and its free but last time I used it I couldn't find a way to pick and choose apps like in tibu you can run a batch and check off ones you want to reinstall and not have to install em all

Why do you need link2sd ?
apps2sd is already there in the ROM.
If you want to move apps to sd-ext then use A2SDGUI app instead of link2sd.
Link2sd must be causing all FC's.Uninstall it right away.

I tried to use A2SDGUI (it was in other rom) but probably I don't know how to use it or I use it wrong. I'm downloading it right now and I'll try to do something with it. You're right, I want to move some apps to sd-ext.
Quick question: there is enabled "Apps are on SD!" but they're not, how to move them in this app? Example: youtube, quickoffice, gmail and others - I don't think they are on SD and there are no possibility to move them there.

Look link2sd is a nice app,no problem with that. Its only good when you havent flashed any a2sd script or your ROM doesnt have it.
In this case ROM already has an a2sd script,link2sd creates its own scripts which are conflicting with the one in the ROM.
first open a2sdgui app,hit zip align on boot option,if you want more space you can go to dakvik cache tab at the up,you can hit move and rebuild dalvik cache to sd-ext,this way you'll have 50-60 mb more space.
And yes, this app will move apps which should be to the sd-ext.
You were right. After unistall link2sd force closed stopped appears! Thanks for help

If you are looking at app info and if there is an option available saying 'Move to SD',that doesnt mean that app is on internal memory.'SD' and 'SD-EXT' are two different things or partitions.

[Q] Rooted my phone, can't flash any roms (I made a huge mistake)

A couple of months ago, I was getting bored of my phone so I decided to upgrade to android 2.3.3. I like it, but I felt like I should root my phone too. Heres the problem, I couldn't get unrevoked to work so I used revolutionary instead. They didn't have my hboot version so I proceeded with one of the hboot versions listed.
Everything went smoothly, my phone was now rooted, and I was able to free up more internal storage. I really wanted to flash a new rom though, so I commenced with the MIUI rom, and ended up getting stuck in a bootloop. I tried cynogen and the same thing happened. I tried a couple of other roms too, but none of them worked. I was just continuously getting stuck in a bootloop. (Yes, I cleared dalvik cache, wipe data etc..)
Has anyone else on the Desire done the same thing as I have? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Hard to say what goes wrong on your end. First, I would suggest you to go ahead with stock hboot from http://alpharev.nl/ and flash a newer recovery tool, e.g. this one (4EXT Touchrecovery).
Then try one of VJ's JB roms and post the results.

a2sd is a script that allows you to install apps onto your sd card (specifically an ext partition). This is very useful since the desires internal memory is pretty bad, and with a2sd you can have around 1gb of space for apps. Some roms need an ext partition to work properly/boot.
Follow this guide to make the partition.

If u still have a nandroid backup of stock, you could restore it, backup apps with tb, flash the new rom, and finally restore the apps with tb.
