I was wondering if I were to partition my SD card is I can restore a nandroid backup and would it install the rom to my SD card or do I have to pretty much start fresh once I partition?

Yes u can restore a nand backup after u partition, just remember to back up your SD card to your pc because when u partition, it'll erase the SD

Once you flash the .zip (ROM)
Its on your phone not your sd card anymore the zip will still be there but the ROM is on the phone unless you have a God Mode I think they run off of an ext2 on your sd .
And yes you can restore a backup after you partition.
I hope that makes sense to you.

I was more or less wondering if I were to back up my phone right now, then partition my SD card. IF I restored that backup will I see the benefit of the added space on my phones internal memory?

If the ROM your on supports dta2sd when you install your backup you can run the command in terminal emulater
su
a2sd reinstall
And that will move all your apps to your sd card.
Edit: If the ROM doesn't have it you can flash dta2sd after you restore your backup it will bootloop a few times if you do thats normal.

Im on Synergy Nightlies and im not completely sure what it supports. Im more or less just looking to free up some internal space on my phone since Sense 3.0 takes up a lot of space.

That ROM should have dta2sd you might just want to make a backup and after you partition and put everything back on your sd card restore your backup when you boot up go into terminal emulater and type.
su "enter"
a2sd reinstall "enter"
If you get an error try flashing dta2sd beta 4.
That command will move all your apps to your sd don't type the "enter" .
Edit: I just had a thought that synergy might use the cm a2sd and I don't think you can run commands in TE but I'm not 100% on that just ask in that thread.

Help with sd ext partitioning

Ok so this all started when I switched from Cyanogen to Fresh 3.2. I used Amon Ra's Recovery to wipe and because it said to so a full wipe I figured I had to wipe evey option on Amon Ra's Recovery including sd ext. When I did That I got and error that said "Error: run "wipe ext" from abd!". I read somewhere that that wasn't going to be a problem so I continued loading the rom and it booted fine. I ran into problems later on when I tried installing Backbreakers. I got an error in the notification bar that said "installation unsuccessful". I later got the same message when trying to install Angry Birds. I've learned from other threads that those games should work fine on Fresh's roms. I now have the newest Fresh rom and still have the same problem. Just recently I found out that I shouldn't have wiped sd ext partition if I didn't have one setup. Now, I never set one up myself, but maybe one was setup automatically through one of the roms I had used. Now I want to fix the problem with my Sd ext partition (I know I'm not using The term correctly because I no nothing about it) and find out what it does. If anyone could help me understand what an sd ext partition is and how to solve my problem I would be very thankful.

You can set it up in Ra recovery. It's very easy. Make sure you back up your sd card to your computer cuz partitioning will wipe it.
Download DarkTremor from HERE
Select Partition SD card from the recovery menu
The first option is for a swap file which we dont really need so set it to 0MB
The next is for your ext partition. 256MB should be plenty but if you've got a large SD card feel free to go higher.
After that's done, you can upgrade it from ext2 to ext3 which isnt necessary.
Boot up the phone or mount sd card from recovery and place the DarkTremor file you downloaded on your sd card and flash as you would a rom.
After the phone boots up you can open a Terminal Emulator and type:
su (then press enter)
You should see a # symbol. Now type:
a2sd cachesd
This will move dalvik cache to your sd card and free up even more memory. Just remember to wipe ext partition before flashing a new rom and I believe you'll need to flash the DarkTremor file again after you flash a new rom. Your ext partition will remain. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions most can be answered in the DarkTremor thread or feel free to PM me.
Wow thanks for the great info. I'm going to do this hopefully it will fix my problem. What is an sd partition for anyways or what does it do? I have the 6gb sd card that came with my evo goe much space should I put for my ext partition? Thanks for all of the help.

The ext partition is a physical memory area in your sd card which is formated the same as the internal memory of the phone. Not like the rest of the sdcard. The limits are set on the rest of the card so the stuff in the ext with it's sequential byte order won't be over-written by the pc-like low-high byte order of the rest. Stuff can be logically assigned to the ext partition by the OS. At startup a find is issued on the partition, if it's there then automatically Fresh's / tremor's ap2sd "program" puts portions of applications on the sdcard. You can manually augment what gets put into the ext partition by issuing commands. Aps2sd was important on devices with limited internal memory.

Forgot to mention, its recommended you use a class 4 SD card or faster. I'm not certain what the consequences are but when I ran a2sd on my G1 with a class 2, the phone would crash.

A2SD Guide? Partitioning?

I did a quick search and only found posts from different phones, so I thought I'd ask here.
Can anyone point me to a guide on how A2SD is used?
I just freshly rooted my phone with Revolution.io -> Amon Ra Recovery -> Synergy RLS1.
I am not really sure if any of them come with any A2SD program...
If not, how do I get it?
And once I get it.. how do I use it? : /
Thanks for your patience in advance...

From what I understand, synergy has a built in apps2sd, you just have to have a partition then install the apps fresh from the market, but Idk for sure.....
Sent from my Synergized Evo 4g
Hm.. how do you check for it? Is it in the bootloader/recovery screen? Thanks!
You have to manually partition your sdcard yourself. Without partitioning, you can't use the aps2sd feature. Partitioning creates a lot more interal memory.

I'm pretty sure Synergy has DTA2SD built in as well, but you should check the ROM page to be sure. I don't use that ROM, so I don't know 100%. You have to partition the SD card first. You can find instructions for that on the page I linked earlier. Then DTA2SD should work automatically, but you can always check it by going into Terminal Emulator and typing A2SD check
A few questions:
This part confuses me: e. Follow the instructions on the phone to partition your sd card. You can optionally set a swap file while you are partitioning your sd card. (What does setting a swap file do?)
G. only perform this step if you want ext4 and your rom supports it: in the partition sdcard menu, select sd:ext3 to ext4. (What is ext 2/3/4? Benefits of having them?)
I'll check the other forums to see if there is any A2SD support already in the rom. thanks!
I too am having trouble with ap2sd, I am using the Prime XL 3D sense 3.5 ROM and there is no baked in ap2sd, but I flashed one from the sd card and idk if it is working or not. I also know that when I partition my SD card it does not give me the added internal memory. I am not sure how to fix this. I currently only have 50mb internal. The ROM is 100% deodexed and I"m just not sure why my internal memory is so low when my card is partitioned.

Do I need to reflash the ROM, but first wipe everything multiple times? I have already tried reflashing it before, but I only wipe once.------- hahah that sounded like toilet humor. Anyways I love this ROM and it is Super snappy and now that I have posted 10 times I will be able to ask the Dev. wooohoooo. Now I can post in the dev forums.. This should help me with my problem. Thanks for any insight..

If dtaps2sd isn't t baked into the rom, wipe everything, flash the rom, then flash the dtapps2sd.zip to enable dtapps2sd on that rom. But make sure that your sdcard is partitioned. After the rom boots up, you can go into terminal emulator and type "su" hit enter, then "ap2sd cachesd". Your phone will reboot, this creates a lot more internal space as well.

It is baked into Synergy.
Partition the sd card via instructions, wipe everything on phone 3 times or use vm superwipe, reflash Synergy. Once set up, u can easily move apps to SD with Titanium.
Swap does nothing for current ROMs but will soon with sense 3.5.
What is so confusing? Read THIS forum ONLY, that will decrease confusion drastically. The real answers are already HERE!

I've always thought that once you set up the partition and are using dtapps2sd that you should NOT use titanium or any app to move the apps to the SD card because once you install an app, it automatically puts it on the ext. It can mess things up if you use titanium to move them to the SD card. Titanium may say that the apps are being stored on the internal memory but its actually stored on the sdcard ext that you created when partitioning it.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I ran 3 sets of tests with Synergy last nighy using titanium.
All 3 results were the same. I made a copy of my sd on computer, formated the sd. Partioned it.
Reflashed Synergy.
Then installed Titanium and copied ny titanium directory onto the sd card.
Then I did a batch restore of all apps to internal memory. Wrote down the numbers that Titanium said was in each memiry slot.
Then did a batch move of all apps to sd card. The numbers reported by Titanium did not change.
So i then wiped everything and redid everything again, this time after reflashing Synergy, I did a batch restore of all apps to sd card. Same numbers.
Hence, a2sd is baked into Synergy and all apps are put on sd no matter what is selected.

Partitioning SD card question

If I use Dredz method of partitioning my SD card, do I still need to flash the DT a2sd? Or will my partition work just fine without it? Also, could someoen go into detail the difference, and maybe benefits of each? Thanks

it depends if the rom comes with any type of a2sd(most roms do) then you shouldnt have to flash dta2sd with the rom. With dta2sd it gives you more features like you can move dalvik cache to sdcard, external, and cache. You can move all your apps back and forth from your ext to internal.
So with just dredz method, I can just move apps 2 sd, and nothing else?
Which I think thats All I will need. I am on warm 2.3 with low internal mem right now, so just trying to make some space.
Warm 3.5 comes with cma2sd so you don't have to do anything. All you need is a partitioned sdcard and the Rom will do everything on its own
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Partitioning your card doesn't automagically give you the ability to move apps to the ext partition, you will need either a rom with the mod baked in or a script such as DTa2sd and terminal emulator to manage the ext partition

sd-ext full, cant install on internall memory

I have a problem, and i cant manage to solve him, so any help will be apriciated.
I installed Runnymede AIO V6.0.4.3 Special Edition Stable Version
Problem is that every new app that i install goes diractly to the sd-ext. The partition of sd ext is 512, but after installing ROM it size is down to about 80 mb. So after installing few apps sd ext is full and i get an error. Meanwhille i have about 125 mb free on internal storage!
I tried su
a2sd remove, but it tells a2sd not found!
I`m really lost, tried everything for couple of days, so if anyone can help me, please do so...
This ROM requires 1 to 1.5GB ext4.
You might need to extend the sd-ext partition.
The easiest would be to backup your phone, repartition through recovery and reinstall the ROM.
I've been using this ROM for quite some time now and everything works perfectly with a 1GB ext partition.
But the rom is allready installed on sd ext and every other app that i installed later is also on sd ext. But now my sd ext is full, so i want to set as my default location internal memory, but i dont know how to do that... Does anyone have idea?

Sd Ext is "internal memory" - the a2sd etc scripts essentially fool the phone into thinking the sd Ext is part of the internal storage. Therefore increases the data storage for your user apps and is where they will install. This is why you have plenty of internal phone storage, but isn't anything to worry about.
Your actual problem using this Rom is that in common with other later sense Roms, parts of the Rom are also installed to the Sd Ext. This is why the sd Ext size needs to be bigger than 512MB, its filling up because its got parts of Rom plus all your user apps on it.
Sure the Rom thread will recommend what size is, needed. So do a nandroid (include sd Ext if AmonRa recovery), copy sd card contents to pc as backup, repartition using Gparted, copy sd backup back to card, nandroid restore.

Do you mean how the script works or what do you have to do to get the script working?

Do a backup (titanium, so that you can copy the backupfiles into your harddrive), and repartition the SD card. 1,5 to 2 Gb should be more than enough. Your problem is the same one I had with MIUI-XJ. Like people have said over, the problem is too little space on the partition. If you want to keep your messages and whatever else, there are apps to backup them as well. So... Yeah, 1,5-2GB of ext4 partition, than rewind.
But my sd card is already partitioned. How can i erase sd-ext, so i can partition it again?
Personaly if it was me id boot into recovery then do a backup then wipe/factory reset, wipe dalvik+cache and partition sdcard again (1gb) atleast, flash rom (install) restore backup. But thats just me

Ive tried many roms and doing the same wipes but same problem...

Excellent first post! Completely correct about not wiping SD. Also sound advice about making sure you have Amon RA.
@ the op, hit ^^ this guys thanks button!
Actually, wipe sd is not bad if you are able to put stuff back on your sd card... What you should do IS use Amon Ra recovery, and partition the sd card and upgrade it to ext 3.
Pick a ROM, let's try to get that flashed and working! Hit me up on gtalk if you'd like, pm for contact info.

It really depends on what you are flashing, if you use your sd card. I don't really store anything in my sd card, so I use 64mb for swap and 2048 for ext, and yes upgrade to ext 3. If you are flashing ICS you can use ext 4.
I am curious did you get a ROM working? I remember switching to Amon Ra after a similar situation, nothing would work, though it did with Amon.
