Help, is my phone dead or can it be saved? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is what ive done in the recovery
Wiped the following:
cache, data, system, boot, davlik, SD card, sd card ext
did a factory reset..
installed rom.. but my phone keeps restarting and getting stuck in a boot loop..
Ive tried many roms and doing the same wipes but same problem...
is my phone dead? is that the proper way to do a clean install of a rom?
Saw this video on youtube, will it work?

Dude the thing you did wrong it that you wiped your sd card, never wipe your sd card everything else but that ,just download a rom on your Pc and drop it on your sd card then go into recovery(Amon recovery 2.3)please tell tell me that's what you use, clockmod dose'nt do a clean wipe, once everything is back up and running and you've installed your apps go back into recovery and do a nandroid backup. ps; hit the thanks button.

Excellent first post! Completely correct about not wiping SD. Also sound advice about making sure you have Amon RA.
@ the op, hit ^^ this guys thanks button!

Actually, wipe sd is not bad if you are able to put stuff back on your sd card... What you should do IS use Amon Ra recovery, and partition the sd card and upgrade it to ext 3.
Pick a ROM, let's try to get that flashed and working! Hit me up on gtalk if you'd like, pm for contact info.

Try taking out your sd card then do a hard reset.

what size should I make the swap and ext? keep it stock using 32mb for swap and 512mb for ext2 then convert to ext3?

32 for swap is cool and 1024 for ext 2 and yes, upgrade to ext 3.

It really depends on what you are flashing, if you use your sd card. I don't really store anything in my sd card, so I use 64mb for swap and 2048 for ext, and yes upgrade to ext 3. If you are flashing ICS you can use ext 4.
I am curious did you get a ROM working? I remember switching to Amon Ra after a similar situation, nothing would work, though it did with Amon.

i flashed the CM9 ICS.. but my phone is still rebooting and stuck in the boot loop

Un-partitioning SD card?

Hi guys,
I couldn't find anything about this (I did try searching before posting this thread, so I hope I am not repeating a common question!).... I wish to unpartition my sd card and just go back to a normal fat32 partition....
So far I have tired windows disk management and Rom Manager, which just allows you to ADD a ext partition with no luck!
Can anyone else guide me how to achieve this?
Regards!

System recover? clockworkmod using the fake flash method? because I don't see the Partition SD Card menu anywhere else and i've tried both!
I know its right in front of me somewhere, I just can't see it, D'oh!
use the one from rooting folder
Bah,
I ended up using GPart live cd to undo it!!
Thanks for the responses guys, hopefully this will help someone else who needs it!

That's fine, it's why I created the thread!
If you just want to partition you can use ROM Manager (but this requires root)
you need the recovery file (entitled 'pushfiles' or something) from the risk-free root package to partition/un-partition the card.
Else, you can use a GPart live CD, which makes it really easy!
Hope that helps buddy...

If you're using a2sd+ then you need to change your ext2 partition to ext3, Also, I don't believe that you need a swap partition anymore...
Try that!

lol, lets give the guy a break.... we all know it was a 256GB Flash card!
Anywhooo, I have another question, so I think i'll hijack my own thread!
Guys, whats the most efficient way to backup/restore and move apps between roms? I've ended up manually re-installing installed apps 2/3 times now, I was going between roms that did/didn't support a2sd. Also, should there be any consideration to any specific backup options available in the various tools?
Thanks in advance!
Hi, my phone got bricked using GPart live to turn my ext 2 into a 3 partition. Everything went fine using the program, turned off Usb storage, went into market and tried to download a program, when it started to install the screen when black.
Now I cant boot with sdcard in, I don't come past the white HTC screen
Without SDcard it starts loading the system but the loading is a never ending loop.
Tried to format SD with fakeflash, dosent help
Tried reflashing my rom with wipe and everything, dosent help
Any ideas?

I would say, firstly try to get your phone working by wiping it clean and re flashing the rom. Use a different memory card just to get up and running. Then you can concentrate on fixing you card..
Although that seems like a very strange issue, are you sure you formatted your card correctly with GPart? (eg, exactly 512 MB/1024MB?) I'm a n00b myself so I would also wait for some of the more experienced users to offer their input. lol

Solved it by using AM recovery, repair + new partition solved the problem! Gonna reflash 2.0 again since i messed up the wiping somehow and then keep this until the rooted 2.2 is out!

Help with sd ext partitioning

Ok so this all started when I switched from Cyanogen to Fresh 3.2. I used Amon Ra's Recovery to wipe and because it said to so a full wipe I figured I had to wipe evey option on Amon Ra's Recovery including sd ext. When I did That I got and error that said "Error: run "wipe ext" from abd!". I read somewhere that that wasn't going to be a problem so I continued loading the rom and it booted fine. I ran into problems later on when I tried installing Backbreakers. I got an error in the notification bar that said "installation unsuccessful". I later got the same message when trying to install Angry Birds. I've learned from other threads that those games should work fine on Fresh's roms. I now have the newest Fresh rom and still have the same problem. Just recently I found out that I shouldn't have wiped sd ext partition if I didn't have one setup. Now, I never set one up myself, but maybe one was setup automatically through one of the roms I had used. Now I want to fix the problem with my Sd ext partition (I know I'm not using The term correctly because I no nothing about it) and find out what it does. If anyone could help me understand what an sd ext partition is and how to solve my problem I would be very thankful.

You can set it up in Ra recovery. It's very easy. Make sure you back up your sd card to your computer cuz partitioning will wipe it.
Download DarkTremor from HERE
Select Partition SD card from the recovery menu
The first option is for a swap file which we dont really need so set it to 0MB
The next is for your ext partition. 256MB should be plenty but if you've got a large SD card feel free to go higher.
After that's done, you can upgrade it from ext2 to ext3 which isnt necessary.
Boot up the phone or mount sd card from recovery and place the DarkTremor file you downloaded on your sd card and flash as you would a rom.
After the phone boots up you can open a Terminal Emulator and type:
su (then press enter)
You should see a # symbol. Now type:
a2sd cachesd
This will move dalvik cache to your sd card and free up even more memory. Just remember to wipe ext partition before flashing a new rom and I believe you'll need to flash the DarkTremor file again after you flash a new rom. Your ext partition will remain. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions most can be answered in the DarkTremor thread or feel free to PM me.
Wow thanks for the great info. I'm going to do this hopefully it will fix my problem. What is an sd partition for anyways or what does it do? I have the 6gb sd card that came with my evo goe much space should I put for my ext partition? Thanks for all of the help.

The ext partition is a physical memory area in your sd card which is formated the same as the internal memory of the phone. Not like the rest of the sdcard. The limits are set on the rest of the card so the stuff in the ext with it's sequential byte order won't be over-written by the pc-like low-high byte order of the rest. Stuff can be logically assigned to the ext partition by the OS. At startup a find is issued on the partition, if it's there then automatically Fresh's / tremor's ap2sd "program" puts portions of applications on the sdcard. You can manually augment what gets put into the ext partition by issuing commands. Aps2sd was important on devices with limited internal memory.

Forgot to mention, its recommended you use a class 4 SD card or faster. I'm not certain what the consequences are but when I ran a2sd on my G1 with a class 2, the phone would crash.

I think your phone can do it.
Settings > Storage > Erase SD Card
Or, on a PC:
1. Right-click "My Computer" > Manage > Storage > Disk Management
2. Right-click the volume (SD card) > Format
That should do it.
doing that only formats the fat partition..it doesnt actually remove the partition..how would i remove the partition so that my card space is no long 6.33 gigs and goes back to the 7 and a half gigs or whatever it was before
Go into Recovery and repartition it with the ext partitions set to 0.
Obviously, back up any data you care about first.

Which recovery does a full format? Amon 1.8 and 2.3 don't (to my admittedly limited knowledge) HBOOT 'CLEAR STORAGE' isn't working for me either. TWRP, maybe?
I figured out unroot and S-ON, but downgrading HBOOT 2.10.blah.blah to 0.76 and a full format are escaping me.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your time and insights.

Download EaseUs Partition manager free edition. Mount your SD card. Back up anything you want to keep on your SD. Delete the Ext partition. Extend the Fat partition into the free space. Format all of it. Click apply in Ease Us and voila. Reformatted. Now, go into recovery and mount and format the card once more. Once completed, reboot and your SD card will be mounted as usual and have full capacity. Hope this helps.

I'm currently on MIUI, and every time I switch to a Sense rom, the market won't let me update and/or install any roms. Says "insufficient storage." I've got plenty of space, internal. I read it can be caused because some roms don't support a2sd. Is this true? And if it is, would un partitioning my card be the answer? For the record I love flashing to a new rom and seeing all my apps already there...

[Q] Help!!!

I was getting ready to install a new rom and using CWR performed a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and a format system. I accidentally went into partition SD card and instead of hitting the back button hit the go. Now my phone only goes to first white screen "HTC Incredible" and stays stuck on that screen. I am able to boot into bootloader and recovery but cant recover any backups "no files found". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't have a micro sd card reader but will get one to see whats going on.
Im interested to know how partitioning the sdcard would make the phone get stuck at the htc splash? I have partitioned my sd several times before, it does format the sd but has never made it so i cant boot the phone.
EDIT: Alao you cant remove a ext partition by just formating in windows, as windows only sees the fat32 partition. To remove it go back to recovery and the partition sd. When you select it it should ask you 2 things, ext size and swap size.
Use the trackball to set both ext and swap to 0, leaving the whole sd to be formated fat32. After you do that see if you can boot.
I have done this too but good thing I had another SD card with a Rom on it or other wise I would have been screwed

Not sure why its getting stuck on splash screen. It was my first time partitioning my sd card. I tried installing a zip from sd card and none found. I also tried to nandroid restore and no file found. I will try to remove the partition and see if that works.

Sounds like your only option is to redo a wipe data/factory reset, format boot, and format system again, to be safe, then copy a new ROM zip to your SD card and flash that.
Your nandroids, and everything on your SD card, are gone.

there is a clockwork folder on your sd card that is used if you updated clockworkmod recovery from rom manager. i mad the mistake of deleting it once. i had a backup on my pc before i did it. if you can get the phone to boot then just click the first option in rom manager and it will re build the file.
You don't need an SD card reader if you can get to CWM. Just go to mounts and mount Your SD card with your USB cable attached to your PC.

[Q] Sd card problems

Hi guys, sorry for the newbie question but here I go. Just now I decided to flash a new ROM so I do what I normally did before I flash a new ROM (backup my sd card contents and do a nandroid backup). After I done those, I reformat my sd card using my laptop and place the ROM I wanted into the sd card. After I flash the ROM I get stuck in the HTC screen and my backup doesn't work but luckily I manage to revive my Desire. After that I notice that my previous partition that I made using gparted is gone and that's why the ROM didn't work at first. So, am I still able to recover my lost partition from my sd card or they are gone for good?
If you have a working nandroid backup, you can try to recreate your partitions first and restore then.
Windows laptop? The reformat using will have wiped your Ext partition. As said recreate fat32 and Ext using Gparted and restore nandroid (assuming under AmonRa or 4Ext recoveries you included sd-ext) or flash new Rom.

The ext partition itself is gone, but if you re-partition using Gparted, copy your sd card backup from laptop onto sd card, then providing your nandroid included sd ext backup a restore should get you back to where you were.
