[Q] Earpiece + Screen deadzone what may have cause it? - Defy General

Hey Guys,
So i've been a Defy owner for months now and have been recently switching through custom ROMs from JB3 to CM7 to MIUI. ive never had any problem with the handset until last few weeks.
on CM7 - charged it overnight because i fell asleep then when i woke up the screen was ghosting typing, dialing, launching apps and sliding through home pages on my phone Factory reset, soft / hard reset did not do much, flashed my original SBF ghosting was still there but not that bad then after a day a deadspot on my screen. here's a layout. "X" is the part that i cant touch
000000
XXXXX
000000
000000
000000
softkeys are fine and the rest of the screen.
on MIUI - charged it again this time it was only around 80% charged i plugged it out because someone was calling me. BUT, i CANT hear the other person so i tested it for a day and sad to say it was an earpiece problem
so my question is.. what may have caused it? changing ROMS? hardware?
have anyone of you experienced this before?
or is there something wrong with the wiring that may have caused the short circuit to other components in the Phone.
i really need to have your inputs on this since im planning to get it repaired in a week its still under warranty.
your reply's will be appreciated.. thanks XDA!

Tilt 2 - touchscreen just stopped working

The touchscreen just stopped working on my Tilt 2 today (stock ROM), for no reason. The phone wasn't dropped or mishandled and I hadn't added any software or changed anything in the last few weeks. When I picked it up, it was on the WinMo Start screen and I couldn't press any icons on the screen. I soft reset it using the stylus and the reset button, but the same thing happened. I did a hard reset as well, but the screen wouldn't respond.
Does anyone have any ideas? Hardware failure? AT&T is sending me a warranty replacement so I'm stuck using an old unlocked RAZR for a few days. It's pretty disappointing that such an expensive phone would just stop working.
Same thing has happened to me. It has been happening a few times lately and a reboot fixes it.
Now it seems it is permananent. I'm going to try to flash a new ROM and see if it's software related.
I had a similar problem.. although the touchscreen wasn't unresponsive, it just responded/registered touches in the wrong places!!
Sometimes after about 3-4 hours (from a reboot) it starts working normally, other times now. Tried hard reset but that didn't improve anything.
There's a slight possibility I used it in the rain a couple of times too much, so possible water damage?
The moisture detector has gone pink on the phone (a small sticker on the inside that turns from white to pink whenever detects moisure, which HTC use to refuse warranty replacements from what I've read) but that was probably pink from a long time ago anyway.

[Q] EVO Touchscreen and Capacitive buttons not responding

I recently ( Monday, October 25) received a HTC Evo 4g. I rooted it on Tuesday, and installed the latest Cyanogenmod. It was not dropped or hit with anything, and has had a stealth guard on it since day one. My problem is, on Friday morning the touch screen and capacitive buttons would not respond to touch. The OS was not frozen, as the phone would respond to the volume and power buttons. I ended up having to pull the battery in order to reboot the phone. I did so, and the phone worked properly for an entire day. The next morning, after a night of charging, I picked it up again only to be met with a non responsive touchscreen. I restarted the device, but within the next thirty minutes the screen and buttons stopped responding again. I restarted it, and it worked for a few hours. The rest of the day it would randomly stop responding to touch an I would have to pull the battery. At first I thought charging was the trigger, but the screen has stopped working while in use and while sitting not charging on my desk. Hoping it was just a problem with the ROM, I switched to damage control and finally back to the stock (with root) rom. The problem persisted. As I said, I cannot find any kind of trigger, like pressure in a certain place, running a certain app, or doing something. Any suggestions, or should I return the phone under the 60 day warranty?
Also, I have tried searching for answers, but I have found only posts about the improperly grounded touchscreen, nothing like what I am experiencing here.
Factory defect? Unroot, put the stock rom back on at Shipped-Roms and bring it back to the Sprint store. You have a 30 time frame to return the phone and a 1 year factory warranty from HTC. Sprint WILL swap out the phone for free and give you a new one if under the 1 year warranty.
Seriously, this sounds like a factory defect and not a ROM issue.

[Q] my touchscreen is unresponsive when open

Hello all,
I'm having a little trouble with my Epic 4G and am hoping someone here can help me out.
Problem: So, as the title suggests the touchscreen is unresponsive when the keyboard is slid open. When slid closed, the screen works 100% fine, touch is accurate, movements are smooth, etc. When the keyboard is slid out everything works but the screens response to user touch. (ie the screen displays everything perfectly, I can use the capacitive buttons, the volume rocker, the power button, the camera button, and all keys on the keyboard.) The only thing that doesn't work is the screen's response to touch.
Frequency of the issue: This is what stumps me, it is not a problem all the time, if the screen is opened and closed a good amount of times response can be regained. the problem happens about 8 to 10 times a week but always corrects itself when it wants to. Only until today has the problem become "seemingly permanent."
Solutions Tried:
powered down properly
powered down improperly (battery pull)
reset all settings to stock in android system menus
odined back to previous roms, stock and modified (dk28, ec05, ef02, eg22, eh06, etc) for a 100% reset
opened and closed screen as much as twenty times at a given interval when the problem would arise. (this seemed to correct the problem but only temporarily as the screen would just become unresponsive again after a days use)
My Hunch: I am almost positive this is a hardware issue and a simple one at that. maybe a loose zim (zero insertion force) ribbon cable. After watching a Epic 4g dis-assembly video I found a large one that travels inside the slider from the motherboard to the touchscreen and to peripherals attached to the screen. If it is that cable I can repair that myself.
Sprint's comment: I have TEP and went to a sprint repair center but had zero luck with them helping me. The service man I talked to just basically told me my phone is too old to be repaired as they don't stalk parts for the epic 4g anymore and that my best option is to spend the $100 to get a replacement phone.
I am very sorry for the long post but I believe details are everyone's best friend. Thanks in advance for any help, contributions or, ideas I receive and even just for reading my post.
?
What phone did they offer as a replacement with TSP? My front four capacitive buttons have been working intermittently as of late. I expect them to altogether stop soon. Was the $100 for the early upgrade, or the TSP replacement?
For both of you, try a factory reset. It may solve the problems.

I'm pretty sure, from my experience at least, you have a nicked flex cable. Try a hard reset or install a different rom to isolate the issue.

CDMA galaxy nexus - unresponsive to touch

Hello everyone,
Basically went to unlock my phone today and touch screen is not responding, however the hardware buttons work fine. Now i've done some research and found other posts of people with the same problem, however their touchscreen problems seem to be fixed(temporarily, at least) with a battery pull.. mine however is still unresponsive after half a day and multiple battery pulls.
Id rather not have to send in for certified to replace an otherwise perfectly working phone.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

are u undervolting?
Nope, sorry forgot to say. Completely stock never unlocked or rooted.
Also i tried getting into recovery to try and do a factory reset but when i select recovery i just get the android on his back with the red triangle..
so instead i just went through the steps and unlocked the bootloader and booted up (in order to give me the factory reset without having to touch the screen)
It unlocked and booted up fine but still no response..
No new recent app installed and never had this happen before.
Mine did this after a few days of owning it, and luckily the store took it back and swapped it out with a perfectly working unit. Is yours within a few weeks of purchase?
Figured this out randomly. Remove battery cover. With phone turned on, press on the area to the to the left of the camera lens until the screen is responsive. My screen becomes unresponsive when the phone is dropped and this fixes it.

hrmm this does not seem to fix either. I also have never dropped my phone, although this seems to be worrisome if the issue is hardware related.
@ tmellen i purchased the phone from amazon and am a few days past my return date :-/
Guess ill just give them a call and hope for the best. Thanks for the ideas everyone.
(update) called amazon and they are sending me a brand new phone.
Knowing this i thought i'd try dailong's method again only this time i was quite a bit more "rough" with pressing down on that area, and it actually worked!
Ill still be taking the new phone once it gets here but for anyone who is having this problem there's a sweet spot on the left edge of the phone towards the top (looking at it with the back cover off) there should be a circle shape. press on that area really hard and it should fix.. weird
Experienced the same on my GSM version a few minutes ago. I had to call my mobile to get it to respond. After that it worked again as normal. I'll see if I get this issue again in the next few days. Hope it's just random
Had the same happen earlier to mine and I was on AOKP. I've had this happen to other phone before, shouldn't be a a cause for alarm unless it happens very frequently. Btw, next time it happens to me I'll give that left side of the camera trick a try.
mine got fixed by removing battery.

Strip of touchscren not working

Hi guys. I know many of you have had touchscreen problems and whatnot, i searched but it seems like this one is a bit different from usual. Yesterday the phone was totally fine; i woke up this morning and it had a lot of touchscreen problems: at first it registered touches without me doing anything, but after a couple of reboots it was just unresponsive. After another reboot and some messagging, the problem reduced to a strip on the screen simply not working. The strip is located exactly where the first notification on the status bar is (like when you receive a message and you click on that notification). I have the trueancestor stats bar buttons, so that zone is a tad more down than usual. Anyway, all I did yesterday was a quick game. I think it may be the flex cable not working because of the sliding, but it happened all of a sudden, not gradually. I must say that some weeks ago I had the same "registers touches by itself" issue when typing, but a simple reboot was enough. I tried doing factory reset, but nothing so far. Also I can't use pc companion to flash everything stock back (I unlocked bootloader months ago, even though I relocked it; I dunno if it's locked or not right now), and I can't seem to find a working flashtool download link -_-. I don't think that would help much, it probably is a hardware problem, but who knows. I'm on true ancestor 1.6 LE, stock kernel.
Any help would be great, as I fear the phone will get refused in assistance because of bootloader unlocking.
Did your phone had contact with water? When my screen had contact with water it registered touches randomly.
it didn't. it has a screen protector anyway; but that's not the problem for sure. it doesn't register randomly, simply a strip doesn't work now...
Hardware problem. Could be flex cable or digitizer.
Today there were two moments it began to work again, but a few minutes after each one the problem came back. Sigh...
Mine does that when the screen is moist or my hands are too oily. Are you sure you're working in a dry environment?
mhh... exactly that? I dunno, my hands are dry and i think the screen is too; it has a quite thick screen protector (the skinomi one), so even if it got moist that shouldn't be a problem, right? I'm now living in a different town and that may have changed something, but the problem didn't show up until now, and it was sudden.
Also, I noticed that using gamekeyboard on a certain profile I had buttons placed on the strip, and pressing hardware keys mapped to those buttons actually works. This restricts the problem just to the actual finger-touch-detecting mechanism. Does anyone know anything about this?
Edit: lol I heated the phone up a bit with a hair dryer. It works now. I hope it will last and I'll not have to do this again over and over
