[Q]USB will only charge; won't show up on pc - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I've had a DHD for a while, absolutely love the device, best smart phone I've ever owned. However...
Recently when I plug the usb wire into the phone, it pop's up asking if I want to charge or mount as disk drive. Tapping on disk drive the device says its in disk mode, but my PC (windows 7) doesnt see it, Nor my mac(osx snow leopard) or linux(ubuntu 10.10).
I have tried with 2 HTC wires and a blackberry wire, used numerous different roms (MIUI 1.7, RCMIX hd BLISS 1.2, CoolssS sense 3 rom, Virtuous, cm7 and another sense rom that I cant remember. One of the roms said that it did have USB issues and to add a different kernal to fix it, which didnt) with no joy. Windows 7 device manager shows the Desire HD as an unknown device and mass storage controller both with a yellow !
I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling htc sync with no joy. Any ideas?
Searching here and google hasnt come up with anything apart from hardware fault.
If I am to take it back to my retailer under guarantee to change device, I obviously need to unroot, s-off etc again. Will installing a stock UK RUU from HTC do it all in one go? If so could anyone link me to it?
Cheers guys!

All machines used have been rebooted, factory resets on phone, New roms everything I can think of

Boot into fastboot and from a windows command prompt type
fastboot oem enable qxdm 0 (press enter)
This might fix it

Is it literally that simple using htc sync drivers? I will I need to mess with adb again?
Thanks mate
Edit- got adb running, but it says fastboot is an unknown command?

Attached is a zip with the fastboot.exe and the drivers if required. Extract the fastboot.exe to the tools folder of your sdk then try the command again. (Don't forget you have to select fastboot on the bootloader on your phone.)
This might not work but definitely worth a try.

Hey,
downloaded and done as you told, however fastboot is just saying "waiting for device" and the phone only says "fastboot" not "fastboot usb"
I have reverted to a completely stock rom (1.32) losing root etc. It's still s-off however I dont think the shop I bought it from would check that, and I cant s-on due to lack of USB...
*sigh* guess I gotta say goodbye to the old fella unless there are any more suggestions?

Looks like a warranty repair job. They'll probably fix it even though it's s off. I wouldn't worry aboot it too much. Sorry I can't be more helpful but it's got me stumped.
You did say you got adb working though right? If that's the case it doesn't make sense that you can't get fastboot usb.
Sent from my Motorola Startac running Atari 2600 software!

I meant adb was running on pc. Not picking up the device though
No matter what rom I am on, usb cable is detected and asks if i would like to go to diskdrive mode, which i say yes, however, any pc, be it my own, a friends, a mac or linux box all just sit there as if it cant see it. Used multiple cables too, so it must be the device. Prehaps the pins are knackered, the usb cable does wobble when its in, its not an entirely snug fit...

Have you tried a different cable? Some cables are meant for charging but don't work for data transfers. A long shot but worth a try.

Yeah I used a blackberry one that was used for data with my old 9700, and a friends HTC Desire usb cable too, which works fine with his phone on the same pc...

Bummer. Guess it needs a hardware fix then.

Tyied what you suggested as I was having problems also, change of lead worked for me just now, tried a few earlier but no luck, as u say, some leads will only charge the phone

Same prob here. The phone is only charging.
Different PCs, different cables, different roms...
the adb fastboot cmd brings:
...(INFO)ERR Command Error
OKAY [ 0.007S ]
finished...
If i plug on my Desire HD (with Leedroid 4 atm) AND eject THEN the SD Card i get the Menu with the Choice of charging, HTC Sync, etc.
Now i insert the SD Card again and i have full access on it. Once. Until i unplug the cable.
I think its no HW Bug...
Anyone an idea?

I might have given the wrong fastboot command. Try this one. (the space between enable and qxdm has been removed)
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 (press enter)

Jeah, i tried this also. It succeded. Also i tried this:

ends with:
"error scanning partitions" (with or without su root)
and this:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/309939-usb-brickrickrolledb0rked-fixed/
it patches, but the problem is still persistent.
After all i get access to the USB Menu and the SD Card if i eject the sdcard an replug it. I have access in fastboot mode!
I dont know what to do next...

I'm spent for ideas. Good luck and post your results for others.

last thing is to flash the original RUU etc.
oh boy...

i think the flash_image i have is for the original Desire, not the desire HD.
Is there any difference or can someone provide me a propper flash_image (if thats the Problem)?

Had this problem for a while, tryed everything nothing worked.
Htc said that I have to send it in for repair.

Same problem here, also nothing I could do to change it. Tried different cables, different computers etc. Can't send it in for repair because I have Eng S-off which I can't revert without a usb connection.

[Q] USB failure? A real puzzle for you people

A remarkable problem to be solved. I run oxygen 1.04, s-off, n1 table. No SD partition, just all fat32. Then I decided to do a stupid thing wich was to change launcher by uninnstalling via titanium backup, and then install launcher pro via market. When reboot the device couldnt read the sdcard, wich i solved by using fastboot command "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0" and then "fastboot reboot-bootloader." I then got access to sdcard via recovery (amonra2.0). I Managed to do a restore of previous backup.. But then i got the problem of the device not being recognized in windows (7, 64). It worked via bootloader strange enough.. Thought it was a problem thanks to my mess ups, and decided to unroot and restore factory settings, wich i did by flashing PB99IMG through sdcard.. Are back on scratch, but no usb functionality.. Unrecogniced by windows still.. Are charging though. At some point it asked for Quallcom CMDA (I have AMOLED if that has anything to do with it) usb drivers something, installed Windows Mobile Device Center, no luck... Is this a hardware malfunction? USB brick? Ive searched everything without luck.. Would really appreciate help here, if not im sending it in on garantuee basis.
That's an usb-brick. You can find everything about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639.
Good luck.
Well. I need to be rootet to use this guide, but I aint.. Got hboot 093.001.. Searching for ways to downgrade via fastboot, or some other way since the phone is not detected via regular USB. Anybody got som tricks up their sleave?
If not this works.. Will the folks repairing this phone be able to see it has been tinkered with? I mean since its unrooted?

Usb brick fix unrooted. S-on

TOTAL NOOB HERE.
I have already posted but everyones situation is different to mine and I really need someone to talk me through what it is I need to do I've been trying to fix this issue for the last 20hrs with no sleep!
Here is the situation:
I have an HTC Desire HD 2.3.3. It is S-ON. The issue (after doing hours of reading) appears to look like a classic USB brick. As in no matter what sdcard I place in the phone it still reads as "unavailable" with no mounting options. Same thing happens when I connect to the PC I have HTC SYNC/Charge only/USB Tethering but no Mass storage option. This is driving me F****** mad now!
I have already tried 3 different SDcards all three are class 2 and both work fine in my Galaxy S2 and have also reformatted all 3 in the PC using Fat32 and even through command line prompt. I've also tried 2 different USB cables on various usb ports. I have tried cleaning contacts and even beefing up the cover with folded paper. Bluetooth works fine and when I connect it to the PC i have all the options you would expect to see apart from mass storage. The issue is the card will not mount and everything just reads 'unavailable' inc mount - which is just greyed out.
I have managed to get ADB/Fastboot to work (at least I think) I can perform function: 'Fastboot oem enableqxdm 0' when I am in boot menu (vol down + power) and I get a msg which says OKAY. However at this moment in time I need the help of GOD! I have SDK installed with all packages installed and placed in C:/android. I also have USB debugging enabled. Should I be executing these commands from boot menu (Fastboot usb) or the phones desktop. when I try 'adb devices' while phone is in desktop it reads fine and tells me that there is a device listed. but when I try ...enableqxdm from desktop I just get 'waiting for device'. I have used PDAnet to correctly install ADB drivers. I am running Windows 7 64bit. I have factory reset soft/hard. The only thing I havent tried is to see if it appears in recovery mode and the various brick fixes which tbh just confuse the living hell out of me. Please can someone talk me through what it is I need to do I have no idea where to go from here. Like I said I am totally new to this but looking to build up a competency for next time. I have read a guide (Im sorry cant remember who it was by) but they mention to perform 'getvar cid' then follow link to website which creates mtd file...which no longer exists I have searched far and wide and I am ready to throw this piece of crap on ebay for spares/repairs. It was originally on Orange but unlocked and I have been using a tmobile sim which works fine.
PLEASE HELP ME :-(
Edit: Cards not being picked up in recovery mode
Sorry about horizantal fail.

USB brick?

I'm hoping someone can help me here, and before people say it, yes I have done a search and tried different options but nothing seems to work.
I'm on 0.93 hboot with s-off and fully rooted for years.
The problem?
I was running Nikez Rom on my Desire and it had a few rebooting issues but nothing to be alarmed of. However after one of these reboots the phone did not charge, computer displays a 'power surge on USB' message and disables usb port. Fastboot is not recognised and fastboot USB does not appear when I connect. Using adb does not identify the device either.
What I have tried to do to resolve
Having read several forum posts around USB bricks and fixing fastboot to changing mtd0.IMG files, nothing has seemed to work. Alternatively, it could be me not following things or not doing things in a logical manner. I have also done a factory reset and flashed sandvold Rom but that hasn't helped either.
Help
I am now almost at the end of my tether (no pun intended), so would really appreciate some help in trying to fix this problem.
What I have not done
I have not yet flashed the stock ruu, but not sure how that would work either if my computer disables the USB port anyway.
Skill level
I'm not an expert so please be gentle.
Thanks

You are SOFF so the easy way to fix usb brick is to flash 4ext recovery since it has got an inbuilt usb brick repairer. However you are saying fastboot is not working. Even with usb brick fastboot should work. That leads me to believe that the problem may be elsewhere. I would check the computer once.

Thanks, tried 4ext fix usb brick option also, but did not work. I have a Sensation as well and that works fine re computer, so I don't believe it's a computer issue.
Also, the mains charger (plug) light goes off as soon as I put the Desire on charge but comes back on when I remove the phone from the mains charger - which leads me to believe there is something wrong with the phone usb software, but don't know what that could be.
Are there and other options for me to try? Is my phone usb bricked?
You can try the Unbrick option in 4ext recovery.
Also try on a different USB port or even a different PC.

I dont think the problem is software related. I say this bacause the usb port is not working in either fastboot, recovery or rom. Each of these has got its own usb software and they cant all be bad. It seems to be hardware related. I got a feeling your usb port is fried. Most probably it has a short because your mains charger light is fanning out.

How do I confirm this? Is there a solution if this is, in fact, the problem?

Pulled the battery out of the phone, out it on mains charge, but still main charger light goes off.
Tried another battery & it does the same thing. Tried different mains charger and it does the same thing.
How do I prove it's a hardware or a software issue?
Should I try a stock RUU?
Having read other forums regarding USB bricks, people have been able to access fastboot usb, but I can't.
So, I don't really know what the problem is.
I got fixed by this method.
androidforums [dot] com/desire-support-troubleshooting/485991-pls-help-stuck-cant-mount-sd-card-recovery [dot] html
check above link, replace [dot] 's with " . " (period)
boot to fastboot (back+power) and use the following command in command prompt
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
This will enable the SDcard function in recovery
fastboot oem eraseconfig
This should fix the usb brick
reflash the rom you want from your recovery (you will need to wipe device via recovery 1st)

Thanks for your message, but the issue is every time I connect the phone to my laptop (and I've tried this on two different laptops), I get a message as below:
"One of the USB devices attached to the computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it."
It seems the charge on the USB port of the phone has gone corrupt - if that's at all possible.
Once I get fastboot USB working, I'll be good to go.
I'm on BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
RADIO-5.17.05.23
Surely I can't be the only person to have this issue??
Also, I can access my sd card via ES Explorer.
On most of the usb brick issues, I believe the sd card is inaccessible. However, I can access it.
Therefore, I don;t even know whether my phone has a usb brick or whether it's something else?
Anyone?

DesireZ can't connect via USB

Hey guys!
I got my hands on an HTC Desire Z just yesterday and I keep trying to figure out how to connect it to my PC, since it won't pop-up in neither Windws7, Windows8 nor Ubuntu 12.04.
I have tried google drivers, HTC Sync, ADB won't recognize the device. I tried on a freshly installed windows7 - the only device that actually gets installed in Device Manager is "Quallcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)" - meaning... ?!?!?! What?!? I can't make anything out of this.
The device is S-OFF-ed here is what HBOOT says:
VISION PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.84.2000 (PC1011000)
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot

CID-111111111111
eMMC-Sandisk 2223MB 4554751sectors
It has installed CWM recovery. mounting the USB storage from CWM however doesn't work :S
So I can flash a ROM through it, but even a freshly installed ROM wouldn't connect via USB when booted, so I have to run an FTP app to exchange files between my phone and my PC. USB debugging doesn't make any difference.
Besides, I think my phone not being visible in HBOOT by ADB is a big-enough problem by itself.
Does any1 have any suggestions? I tried searching (both by hand and using the forum search engine), but didn't see any1 with a problem similar to mine.
P.S. The phone does charge via the USB cable(tried the original one AND 3 others) when connected to the computer.
I have another Android phone that ADB sees as a valid device etc. ... so I am kinda thinking it maybe even a hardware issue?
There's been some development
I am now pretty sure it's a software issue. Connecting the device to an older PC running Windows XP works like a charm. Sadly anything that's Core i -based doesn't seem to recognize the device.
Could anyone pull his HBOOT, radio, RCdata, etc. and give it to me so I could try flashing something, that is surely known to be working software?
May have a bad pin in USB port, but if any driver at all tries to install then I'm thinking hardware is okay
Go to any guide explaining how to root and there should be links to the proper drivers.
You may need to uninstall any driver that is associated to your phone and then manually choose what driver you need.

Hmmm.... the correct DRIVERS don't seem to be working on Win8.
Will try on windows7 in a while and write back with results. BTW is there a particular device I should be looking for in the Windows' "Device Manager" ?
Windows 8 and 8.1 have issues, a few Google searchs should show you how to do it. If you can't find what driver in device manager to change there is a free windows program called USB driver search (something like that) which tells you all drivers on PC.
If you go to xda university (the xda thread for it) I have a more comprehensive fastboot guide there with directions for Linux install too
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) that it's really not a driver issue.
The Drivers I re-linked above had no success on Windows7
I don't get unrecognized device connected to my PC. I don't get any devices connected to my PC (after I uninstalled the Quallcomm Atheros... mentioned before).
Now - again - correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the phone USB driver inside the Radio? if yes - maybe a wrong radio is flashed? Given the fact that I have a working CWM - is it possible to get a fix through it?
@ demkantor
I will do some reading on the subject you said and then test things out tomorrow morning after a clean neat Win7 installation on my PC. I'll post back results.
Ok, so - here are the results:
I re-installed my Windows OS on my PC, installed all the MoBo drivers - a clean slate.
I then installed the HTC Drivers (mentioned above), HTC Sync, platform-tools.
Connected the phone - computer made the tingling sound of a connected device, but in the device manager - nothing.
Is there a way to flash the bootloader/radio/anything, aside from a new ROM through CWM? That's all I got now :S
Flashing firmware should be done in fastboot, if your USB port is broken you can make a flashable zip and flash in recovery but it is less safe. A slightly better option is creating a pc10img.zip
What do you need to flash right now?

Well I tried flashing different radio through pc10img.zip file, but it had no effect. Windows still plays the tingling sound and no device is recognized.
I'm seeing this HBoot version - PC101000
I noted mine is a tad different - PC1011000, although my HBoot is 0.84.2000 (Which If I understand correctly is the engineering one and should be working properly). Should I be concerned about the number difference and can I flash HBoot through a PC10IMG.zip file?
P.S. I really know I should be flashing through fastboot - the point is - I can't get my DZ connected
P.P.S. Would you advise me to revert to stock (BL, Recovery, Radio, ROM) through PC10IMG.zip (if possible) ?

Flashed the DZ_PC10IMG.zip file you posted - sadly there was no effect on the USB connection. I think I'm pretty convinced it's a hardware issue. At this point I think the soldering iron would be my only salvation.
Thank you very much for your time and knowledge!
Sorry for the bump-up, but I have some recent information on the matter - in the first post.
That's very strange, but again it must be a driver issue I would assume. I've had issues before with some PCs and had to use a program called USBDeview to locate all drivers associated with said phone and then force windows to install the proper ones.
All that firmware you requested can be found in the link I sent earlier in the 30th post
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
With all due respect I still think it's the phone's software issue. I tried installing Windows7 from the same DVD on both computers. Both PCs run fine, but one of them doesn't recognize the phone. Only difference is the hardware platform.
I tried running linux and OSX (Hackintosh) on the PC that doesn't recognize the phone - no effect on any of the OSes.
PC that recognizes the phone under both WindowsXP and Windows7 has no trouble recognizing it when running live linux (Ubuntu distro)
One other strange thing that I noticed is when I connect the phone to my car charger it asks me whether to mount the SD card or not... I'm no expert but I'm guessing that shouldn't be happening.
That is why I'm hoping that someone could pull their HBOOT, radio, rcdata, recovery, etc... and post them here so I can try flashing a known-to-be-working software and see if it helps.
P.S. (note that the phone doesn't recognize it's plugged into a PC either - it's just charging as if it was plugged into a charger)
One other thing. When I plug the phone in the PC that's not working and I reboot the phone it offers me to mount the SD card and share it with the PC, but the PC won't see there's a USB storage device. It only sees the Atheros gigabit adapter mentioned in my first post. OS clearly doesn't matter.
Again all the firmware you requested in that link on the 30th post, you can unzip it and flash each image on its own if you want, same firmware as on both my g2s and neither have issues
If you're for sure its not a driver issue than its either the USB cable or port (is the new computer USB 3.0?) I feel the phones firmware is unlikely the cause but feel free to test.
But I will say its strange that when plugged into car charger it asks for SD mount, makes me go back to my original thought of a pin on the phones USB port is bad and certain cables trigger effects not wanted
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Well I think I can rule the pin on the phone USB port out, since it's working fine with more than one computer.... sadly it's just not working with the computer I need it to work :S
I'm re-flashing the PC10IMG you posted previously (as it appears I flashed something else last time o.0 )
I'll post results and see if I can order a usb port replacement for my DZ unit.
Once again - Thank you for your time and patience with me!
Cheers

Phone not Mounting on PC

So my phone was mounting fine on my pc, and then all of a sudden it wasn't. My Nexus 7 still mounts properly and accepts developer commands, but the m8 won't (yes developer settings is on).
I tried wiping and flashing a rom clean and it still doesn't work, charges fine though. Any advice?

You might try a different cord.
Open Device Manager in Windows and then plug the phone in. Do you see it in the list with a little yellow triangle? Do you see Android USB Devices listed?
OP after literally messing with various driver files, 8 usb ports and 2 laptops, I dug out my old box of cables and found a taped up, on its last limb OEM HTC EVO 4g (not lte the original) cable. This thing has been through the ringer. But its exactly what It needed. I figured with the 3 cable I had already tried this wasn't the issue, but have you tried using an OEM cable? I guess that is all that works. Good Luck

Uninstall all HTC drivers and HTC Sync. Then connect the phone. DO NOT choose the option to automatically install any drivers.
Open Device Manager, find the phone. Select the option to manually pick the driver, and select the generic MTP device driver.
This is what worked for me, after countless attempts at re-installing various HTC drivers, different cables and ports, etc.
Bump. Still looking for answer to this. I have RUU'ed both to Sense and Google Phone editions and the problem still persists, the phone does not detect its connected to a computer and change to mtp accordingly. Only way I was able to get the RUU in there was through fastboot, which is again the only time I can access the phone through usb. Adb is no luck in either android or recovery.

Have you tried revoking the USB debugging authorization and then accepting the RSA fingerprint key again when connecting to PC?
Obviously it can't be an USB cable problem if you can connect to it in bootloader mode and use fastboot commands.
To clarify, the phone just charges when connected, it does not detect that it is connected to PC so debugging doesn't even trigger, neither does mtp. I don't even get the slow charging notification
Does it do the same when you plug it in and reboot the computer to "pick up" during boot up process? Or if you run a live CD? I never had an issue like that with my phone but I did have a similar problem with the USB external blu ray drive I bought some time ago. The pc just didn't detect it at all not on any of the ports until I rebooted my PC with the drive already plugged it and for some reason it picked it up. <Not a solution as I don't know what caused it to not be detected in the first place but still...
Not sure if it's an issue with the device(Phone for you, blu ray drive for me) or if it's a problem with the PC even though other things might still work for you as it definitely did for me(phone, headset, mouse, keyboard, usb extender + all the external hard-drives connected to it)...
Problem exists in all computers, Mac, pc, linux
Did you try what I suggest in Post #6 above?
This worked for me when I had the same issue. adb and fastboot would work, but it would not mount MTP.
And just in the last day or 2 I helped someone else with the same issue and fix.
The phone doesn't show up in device manager.
Have you modify the Kernel? (Applying some settings for example)
I browsed over the web for this issue and found some people with the same problems. They solved by removing the settings applied on the kernel or flashing a new one.
I've flashed various kernels and ruu, still same result
Still looking for help
