USB brick? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm hoping someone can help me here, and before people say it, yes I have done a search and tried different options but nothing seems to work.
I'm on 0.93 hboot with s-off and fully rooted for years.
The problem?
I was running Nikez Rom on my Desire and it had a few rebooting issues but nothing to be alarmed of. However after one of these reboots the phone did not charge, computer displays a 'power surge on USB' message and disables usb port. Fastboot is not recognised and fastboot USB does not appear when I connect. Using adb does not identify the device either.
What I have tried to do to resolve
Having read several forum posts around USB bricks and fixing fastboot to changing mtd0.IMG files, nothing has seemed to work. Alternatively, it could be me not following things or not doing things in a logical manner. I have also done a factory reset and flashed sandvold Rom but that hasn't helped either.
Help
I am now almost at the end of my tether (no pun intended), so would really appreciate some help in trying to fix this problem.
What I have not done
I have not yet flashed the stock ruu, but not sure how that would work either if my computer disables the USB port anyway.
Skill level
I'm not an expert so please be gentle.
Thanks

You are SOFF so the easy way to fix usb brick is to flash 4ext recovery since it has got an inbuilt usb brick repairer. However you are saying fastboot is not working. Even with usb brick fastboot should work. That leads me to believe that the problem may be elsewhere. I would check the computer once.

Thanks, tried 4ext fix usb brick option also, but did not work. I have a Sensation as well and that works fine re computer, so I don't believe it's a computer issue.
Also, the mains charger (plug) light goes off as soon as I put the Desire on charge but comes back on when I remove the phone from the mains charger - which leads me to believe there is something wrong with the phone usb software, but don't know what that could be.
Are there and other options for me to try? Is my phone usb bricked?

You can try the Unbrick option in 4ext recovery.
Also try on a different USB port or even a different PC.

I dont think the problem is software related. I say this bacause the usb port is not working in either fastboot, recovery or rom. Each of these has got its own usb software and they cant all be bad. It seems to be hardware related. I got a feeling your usb port is fried. Most probably it has a short because your mains charger light is fanning out.

But could this happen while it wasn't connect via mains or computer?
How do I confirm this? Is there a solution if this is, in fact, the problem?

Pulled the battery out of the phone, out it on mains charge, but still main charger light goes off.
Tried another battery & it does the same thing. Tried different mains charger and it does the same thing.
How do I prove it's a hardware or a software issue?
Should I try a stock RUU?
Having read other forums regarding USB bricks, people have been able to access fastboot usb, but I can't.
So, I don't really know what the problem is.

I got fixed by this method.
androidforums [dot] com/desire-support-troubleshooting/485991-pls-help-stuck-cant-mount-sd-card-recovery [dot] html
check above link, replace [dot] 's with " . " (period)
boot to fastboot (back+power) and use the following command in command prompt
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
This will enable the SDcard function in recovery
fastboot oem eraseconfig
This should fix the usb brick
reflash the rom you want from your recovery (you will need to wipe device via recovery 1st)

Thanks for your message, but the issue is every time I connect the phone to my laptop (and I've tried this on two different laptops), I get a message as below:
"One of the USB devices attached to the computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it."
It seems the charge on the USB port of the phone has gone corrupt - if that's at all possible.
Once I get fastboot USB working, I'll be good to go.
I'm on BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
RADIO-5.17.05.23
Surely I can't be the only person to have this issue??

Also, I can access my sd card via ES Explorer.
On most of the usb brick issues, I believe the sd card is inaccessible. However, I can access it.
Therefore, I don;t even know whether my phone has a usb brick or whether it's something else?

Anyone?

[Q] USB Brick

My mac is unable to detect my phone since I flashed Cyan 6 Test 8 Koush, as such I am unable to use adb. Given that I use a mac I assume this is not a driver issue. Phone is able to recharge via USB and USB debugging is enabled. I have found this issue (USB Brick) for the desire on this site but it involves flashing a rom unique to that device. Any ideas on how to resolve issue? Other than USB brick issue, everything is in order.
My card reader is able to read SD card and I have copied to my HD, so I assume issue is with USB on phone.
The only thing I can think of is that your phone somehow got stuck on "Charge Only" mode. In the stock version you can go to Settings, Connect to PC and then change some options there... I do not use this rom though so I'm sorry I can't help you other any further (I'm sure you likely already knew about the above info... if no one responds to you with an answer within a couple days I'd consider asking the Indian Prince of Roms himself... and I know he uses a Mac).
I assume you are mounting your system in recovery while trying to get adb?

Obviously you will need to try it from a terminal emulator.
I recently had the same issue - on a PC - where my CM6 test 8 install would charge but not register as a USB device and give me device malfunction warning messages. Turns out it was a problem with a non-HTC branded micro USB cable I was using.
Odd thing is it worked fine for a month or so, then decided to not work anymore out of any USB port. Switching over to the original cable fixed the problem. Now the other cable is relegated to the stock charger.
This should also fix usb bricks.

Thank you. I am on the road, so I won't be able to implement your solution until later. The procedure you outlined seems simple enough. I will reread. Is it ok if I email you with any questions, or would you prefer that I address my questions via this forum?

Funny thing is that I did not notice the problem until I changed cables. I was using a third party w/no problems, problem only surfaced when I used original cable. Hopefully I will have same luck as you, if not, adrynalyne posted near idiot proof instructions. I just hope that I am brighter than your average idiot, no promises.
adrynalyne, if my hboot is .77 could I simply flash PBI131.img to revert back to original? If not, could I use terminal emulator on my phone to execute necessary commands?
Answer from adrynalyne was "Well, yeah. the PB31IMG.zip should work, as long as it lets you. The other method would need to be done if it won't."
I was able to resolve the problem by switching usb cord to a 3rd party from htc, go figure. Nevertheless, the USB issue has been cited in other forums and if anybody else runs into the problem, follow directions above, i.e. follow links.
TY to all who gave me advice, esp. adrynalyne.
hey, umm.. im having a similar problem. when i try to plug in my droid incredible with the leaked 8/1 froyo rom, nothing comes up on my PC, i am able to acces my sd card by going to computer, and then clicking my sd card. but when i did this, i also noticed that there was a new cd drive, which comes from my phone. does anyone know if this is a usb brick?
Apparently there is a vzw ISO. There are instructions on how to remove in another post. Search USB bricked. I can't post links otherwise I would.

Have you tried with another computer? If it doesn't work, you've got a usb brick. I remember I had that on my friends desire, but got it fixed using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
I don't know if this will work on the desire Hd though...
Thank-you Mate for your response.
Yes I checked it on other pcs and I was at least asked for sort of connection I intended to do. But sdcard wasn't mounted though. Also in fastboot mode loading bootloader usb is not active.
I will try to follow your tip.

[Q] USB Brick - "USB device not recognized" (no ADB or Fastboot)

Hi guys.
As the title suggest I've run into a USB brick with my Desire HD. I don't know how and can't remember when but it was well after I was flashing custom roms. Basically when I plug it into any PC with any cable it says "USB device not recognized". The phone thinks it's just charging (charges fine otherwise both on PCs and with the normal AC adapter). When I'm in fastboot or hboot it won't say it's in USB mode either.
When I try using Fastboot and ADB on my computer it just says there are no devices connected. I've tried many roms, both with Sense and without going from gingerbread all the way up to ICS and JB with no luck.
I cannot find any solution to this problem anywhere and was just wondering if someone stumbled upon a fix?
My thanks in advance.
Huzi.
[Update]
Plugged it into the USB 3.0 port on my brother's laptop. It turned the phone off. Turned it on and it started installing drivers and it works on there. Haven't tried it out on anything else yet as I'm backing up the files. It turned off the phone and installed it on my computer but didn't work last night. I guess I'll try again once all 11GB are copied over

Same things happening on my one XL. this post is ancient For mine even using RUU doesn't work it goes like device unplugged/cannot be found or something similar. ill try usb 3.0 when i get back to my desktop but this kinda sucks. I just had it repaired days ago.

Phone not Mounting on PC

So my phone was mounting fine on my pc, and then all of a sudden it wasn't. My Nexus 7 still mounts properly and accepts developer commands, but the m8 won't (yes developer settings is on).
I tried wiping and flashing a rom clean and it still doesn't work, charges fine though. Any advice?

You might try a different cord.
Open Device Manager in Windows and then plug the phone in. Do you see it in the list with a little yellow triangle? Do you see Android USB Devices listed?
OP after literally messing with various driver files, 8 usb ports and 2 laptops, I dug out my old box of cables and found a taped up, on its last limb OEM HTC EVO 4g (not lte the original) cable. This thing has been through the ringer. But its exactly what It needed. I figured with the 3 cable I had already tried this wasn't the issue, but have you tried using an OEM cable? I guess that is all that works. Good Luck

Uninstall all HTC drivers and HTC Sync. Then connect the phone. DO NOT choose the option to automatically install any drivers.
Open Device Manager, find the phone. Select the option to manually pick the driver, and select the generic MTP device driver.
This is what worked for me, after countless attempts at re-installing various HTC drivers, different cables and ports, etc.
Bump. Still looking for answer to this. I have RUU'ed both to Sense and Google Phone editions and the problem still persists, the phone does not detect its connected to a computer and change to mtp accordingly. Only way I was able to get the RUU in there was through fastboot, which is again the only time I can access the phone through usb. Adb is no luck in either android or recovery.

Have you tried revoking the USB debugging authorization and then accepting the RSA fingerprint key again when connecting to PC?
Obviously it can't be an USB cable problem if you can connect to it in bootloader mode and use fastboot commands.
To clarify, the phone just charges when connected, it does not detect that it is connected to PC so debugging doesn't even trigger, neither does mtp. I don't even get the slow charging notification
Does it do the same when you plug it in and reboot the computer to "pick up" during boot up process? Or if you run a live CD? I never had an issue like that with my phone but I did have a similar problem with the USB external blu ray drive I bought some time ago. The pc just didn't detect it at all not on any of the ports until I rebooted my PC with the drive already plugged it and for some reason it picked it up. <Not a solution as I don't know what caused it to not be detected in the first place but still...
Not sure if it's an issue with the device(Phone for you, blu ray drive for me) or if it's a problem with the PC even though other things might still work for you as it definitely did for me(phone, headset, mouse, keyboard, usb extender + all the external hard-drives connected to it)...
Problem exists in all computers, Mac, pc, linux
Did you try what I suggest in Post #6 above?
This worked for me when I had the same issue. adb and fastboot would work, but it would not mount MTP.
And just in the last day or 2 I helped someone else with the same issue and fix.
The phone doesn't show up in device manager.
Have you modify the Kernel? (Applying some settings for example)
I browsed over the web for this issue and found some people with the same problems. They solved by removing the settings applied on the kernel or flashing a new one.
I've flashed various kernels and ruu, still same result
Still looking for help

[Q] Wiped everything with TWRP 2.8.4.0, now softbricked?

So just as the title says, but here's a little back story (might help).
I'm trying to help out a friend with his Bell Mobility i747M. He wanted to try out Lollipop, so I looked into it and said I could do it. Last I even touched his phone was quite a while ago when he wanted me to flash CM11, back when KK was still pretty new. So it's been over a year. I flashed CWM back then, got the ROM installed, and everything has been good ever since. Fast forward to now, and he wants to try Lollipop. I figured the first thing I should do is update the bootloader/radio, which went perfectly fine (after some researching, I chose 4.3/MK5 for his i747M). I tested them by booting back to the ROM and checking About Phone - everything was good. So I booted back to the old version of CWM, and thought it would be a good idea to get a more modern recovery. CWM or TWRP didn't matter, just as long as it was more up to date (I thought it might help with Lollipop compatibility). So I decided on TWRP, and I got the latest version (2.8.4.0 as of now) and flashed it. Successfully flashed, then rebooted recovery. TWRP is there and working. Great. Next step... I had the Lollipop ROM and Gapps already downloaded and ready to go, so in TWRP, I proceeded to wipe everything (system, data, cache, internal sd).
Uh oh... Half way through wiping, the phone reboots itself! Now there's no ROM, so naturally it has nothing to boot to. Try going back to TWRP, and I see the splash screen again. OK, false alarm... Well, not really... Because now it just reboots itself after the splash screen, every time. Can't get into TWRP no matter what! I can access download mode, but Odin doesn't recognize the phone. Yes, I have the drivers. In fact, the device isn't detected by Windows at all.
So here we are. Download mode boots, but Odin doesn't work because there's no communication through USB at all. There's no ROM on the phone because it was wiped. And TWRP won't boot beyond the splash screen.... Now what?? I tried the 80MB MK5 debricking .img on a 64GB microSD. It does nothing - besides, USB isn't reading anyway, so it's not like I can proceed with Odin.
I'm at a stalemate here... Any suggestions?
My friend's gonna kill me if I killed his phone I'm pretty experienced with several devices, but not much with Samsung. I've never seen anything like this happen before...
When connecting to the computer, have you tried different USB 2.0 ports and USB cables? Have you tried different computers? Different operating systems?

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. Just about done downloading Ubuntu which I'll boot from USB. I'll post back with results once that's ready. I should have it booted within 10 minutes. Once I get there and verify the phone connects, what would be my next step? Should I try flashing stock 4.3 first?
I would confirm the bootloader that is on the phone before flashing anything from sammobile.com.
You may be able to use fastboot commands to get the information by typing fastboot getvar all.
OK, in Linux now. ADB/fastboot won't connect. Tried different USB ports and cables, ones that I know work. No luck...
The only thing I can boot to in the phone is Download mode, so that's where I'm trying from.
For the record, ADB picks up my Nexus 5, so I know it's all set up right.
I'm gonna retry the debrick img, using dd to write it this time.

I don't have Kies, but I'm doubting that would work anyway. There's absolutely no communication between the computer and phone. Nothing happens when I plug it in. No sound, no indication anything was even plugged in. Running lsusb in a terminal doesn't show the phone either.
Edit: Downloading Heimdall (Linux-compatible Odin)...

Plugging into the wall makes the phone vibrate every couple of seconds, but nothing shows up on screen, and there's no indicator light.
The vibrations lead me to believe it's detecting something, but no indicator light worries me (unless that's just because there's no kernel)
The red light does come on if I plug it in without the battery.
Heimdall fails to detect the device as well (no surprise there)
If the phone was bricked, it would usually be recognized as a some sort of device under Windows' device manager which leads me to conclude that it is a USB port issue.

I agree that it is weird, because it's not coming up as a device at all, in either Windows or Linux, yet it does receive power.
I'm guessing here but it appears to me that the only left to try is a debrick image. Is it possible the battery is drained and needs to be charged?

The debrick image is what I've been trying. It's on a 64GB microSD. And I made a new one from Linux a few minutes ago (booted back to Windows now).
The battery was about 80% before all this started, and the phone powers on without being plugged in, so I doubt it's the battery.
Maybe you need a different SD card? Based on posts I have seen, it seems that certain brand/size combinations work while others don't.

I only have one card over 16gb...
Either way, I still have the USB problem. I'll need USB to flash with Odin. The debrick card only seems useful when Download mode isn't working, but that part works fine on the phone, even without the debrick card. My problem is with recovery. If I could run that from the SD, I think I would be fine - just flash a ROM. But I'm not finding anything for that (not surprised).
I thought it could potentially be a corrupt driver, so I tried using USBDeview to uninstall all disconnected devices. I tested it with a portable hard drive, which indeed had to reinstall after. So the program works as intended. However, the phone still isn't detected when I plug it in. No sound, no notification saying it's installing or install failed - absolutely nothing. Power goes to the phone through USB, with multiple cables and USB ports. Just no data connection.
I'm starting to think there's just nothing I can do...
The phone may need a USB port replacement. I know of no way to push recovery to the phone from as SD card without USB capabilities.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Found this, and it's cheap enough... But that shipping!
You'd be better off getting it from China with free shipping. The problem is the amount of time required to get the part.
Maybe contact a cell repair shop to see how much it would cost to have them replace it. Soldering is not my strongest skill
