[Q] (SOLVED) Weather widget showing wrong location - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, first I know that there are many threads about this problem, but mine is a bit different. I searced on google for a solution, but got nothing so far.
Since a few days the official HTC weather widget started showing an incorrect location. By incorrect I mean that I live in Hungary and it shows Naples (Italy).
The wifi location is turned on in settings.
When I switch on GPS and it locks on the satellites, I see that the widget updates to my Correct location (Hungary). When I switch it off, so only wifi again then it goes back to Naples.
Not only the location, but the weather forecast is incorrect too.
The weird thing is that not only the widget but Google Maps, Locus and every nav app that can use wifi to locate me (with GPS switched off), show me that I'm in Italy. I tried Weather Bug, Fancy Widget and they all say Naples, but why??? I've never even been there.
It's definitely not ROM related, I tried several, even went back to stock, but it didn't help.
One thing I figured out, that I connect to the internet wirelessly (obviously) through a D-Link router. Today I just had a feeling, what if the router is causing all this. I switched it to my old SMC router and then I updated the weather widget through that. And voila, everything was back to normal. It showed correct location after several weather updates.
After that I went back to D-Link and then I found myself in Italy again
So my question is, is there any setting in the router that can be modified?? I did firmware upgrade too, but it didn't help either. The time zone and other stuffs are set correctly in the router.
I don't want to go back to the SMC router as it was freezing a lot and that's why I switched to D-Link.
Things that I also tried:
Remove and readd widget then setting current location
Deleted the other cities that were in it
Well I can set the widget to a specific location, but I would like to have it updated automatically by my location.
Any help is much appreciated.
SOLUTION:
Everything is OK now, the widget shows my correct location, Google Maps is showing the correct city. I don't know what was the real solution. It could be coincidence or some stuff that I did.
Here are the things I tried:
-I submitted my D-link router's mac address at skyhook, so that it knows my correct location. Google uses MAC addresses (not IP address) to find us when using wifi and not GPS.
Here's the link where I submitted the MAC: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/submit_ap.php
I selected my location on the map then entered the router's WLAN MAC ADDRESS and submitted.
-I also cloned my previous router's MAC address, because as I said the positioning worked well with the SMC router.
Changed my router's ip address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 (don't know if that helped, I just wanted to copy as much option as I could from the prev. router)
-(This may have nothing to do with the problem)I visited the mobile version of Accuweather.com on my laptop and selected "Current Position". It found my location correctly. And after this I saw the correct place on my phone too.
These are the things I made to solve it. But don't take is for sure. It could be only coincidence and maybe some of my modifications were unnecessary, but I'm now happy that it works again

Are you sure you are not using a proxy on your dlink router?

I'm not sure, it runs on stock settings. I don't really know how to set up a proxy. I only added WPA security to wireless.
I just checked my bro's Spica, he has Fancy widget and it updated well through D-Link. Now I totally don't get it :S
I'll try to reassign a new IP for my phone.
I also made the DHCP release/renew stuff.

Solved it. Updated OP

I know this an old thread but I was having the same issue with my new HTC One and evo 3d for past couple weeks. I live in KS and current location was stuck in Kentucky when I was on wifi at home. I submitted thru skyhook, shut off all wireless devices and renamed my ssid then rebooted router and airave and so far so good

WIFI Issue

I finally received my HTC desire today. After playing for a while, I found that it has a problem connecting to a hidden WPA2 secured wireless connection. Can anyone share some light with me here??
No probs here, tested with a couple of networks (hidden, of course)...
should install my new Linksys tonite (or on friday), and will post if anything goes wrong with that.

Hidden with WPA2?? impressive....you must be the lucky one!
sorry, WPA
I have the same issue.
I have a Draytek 2820n modem/router and my Desire will only connect to it if the SSID is not hidden (using WPA2 - that's what the router tells me).
Same problem here. At work the wlan is WPA2 with hidden ssid. Google'd the problems, and seems to be a known issue with Android.

I had a similar problem, and there is an application on the Market which is supposed to handle this. Sorry, I don't know whether it works, because finally I used SSID broadcast. I think the name was HiddenSSDI Enabler.

I've just tried HiddenSSID Enabler on my Desire and it appears to work OK. You need the wi-fi turned on to enable it but you get no indication that it is enabled. I just rebooted (to be sure) and it works. If wi-fi is off when you enter your SSID, it will tell you that it can't find it - which seems logical to me.
Thanks for the tip Jade_user.
Sorry to hijack but it is along the same lines..
When I attempt to connect to my wifi router it gets stuck on Obtaining Address.. So I thought to myself right... set up static IP address for the desire... Connected.. Brilliant... except its not.. can't get on any web pages or any thing else that requires a connection!
I have been able to connect to other wifi spots fine but just doesn't want to seem to work on my router at home! I have checked the settings on the router and all appears to be fine (never had a problem before with any of the multitude of devices that have been connected). Checked the spectrum and the wifi channel appears to be all clear.
The SSID is not hidden, the security is WEP... the router is the stock job sent by O2 (they call it O2 Wireless box II, I forget the real model name but I am pretty sure its a rebranded Thompson..). I have a similar router at another address and it connects fine on that one and both are on ASDL2 lines.
Sorry for the long post but tried to include as much info as possible! Its really annoying not be able to get on the wireless as its a basement flat and phone reception is dire to say the least!!
Many thanks in advance,
Pixie
I have the same issue, phone thinks it is connected to wifi just fine, but no data.
However, after investigating a bit more, it seems that it is the DNS lookups that fails, since in that situation, surfing directly to an ip address works just fine, but not if it requires a dns lookup !?!
Hmmm... I just changed the security to WPA and now it is working fine :S.. still annoying because now we are going to have to change all other devices over.. Might be worth a punt in your case tunedude?

Have you looked in the Market? It's not a standard option, you need to install it from the Market - just search for HiddenSSID.

Ya found it, install it...but no effect?? dont even know if the program work. It just have the screen to type the SSD?? and then enable button. I have clicked many times on the button, but nothing happen. In the Wifi setting, I created the name but still it says out of range.
There is nothing wrong with the WIFI, when I broadcast the SSID, it work just fine. Anyway, I give up...I just broadcast them.
Just add MAC filtering as mentioned before - more secure than hidden SSID

I'm using both - just to make sure.

HTC Weather Location Problem

Hello
I hope this isn't a repost.
I was wondering if anyone else is having an issue with the weather application not showing your correct location. Mine was working fine until Wednesday evening and now it just displays United Kingdom (Current Location). It does update the temperature and Google Maps knows where I am using cell location.
Anyone know of a fix or is this a wider issue with the the accuweather site?
Thanks
Paul
Mines been on the blink for a couple of weeks now. Some times it works and other times it just says UK
Same here - however, when I am in Bath (where the office is), Bath is shown, anywhere else on route now just says United Kingdom.
mine is the same went daft a few weeks ago worked for 1 day on wednesday and know is dead again just saying UK and thats it
Yep. Mine gone bat sh*t stupid too.
Even with gps on, it still doesn't get it right.
Ended up doing a work-around by going into the weather app, deleting all the irrelevant locations (paris, madrid etc) and manually added my city. Won't change when I go somewhere else, but rarely leave my city limits and its better than generic uk weather.
Not too fussed about it. Accuweather (who do the weather info for this widget) are not too crash hot on details anyway. Yesterday I was sat in my office, and it was raining so hard, it was hard to hear over the roar of the rain on the roof. My weather was saying "mostly sunny". Lol. Said the same after I refreshed it, and every uk news station saw this down-pour coming since tuesday.
You are better off having a link to the met office (if you in the uk) on your home page. Or just look out the window!

Mine too. Just says "current location" and nothing else. Has done for weeks.
Does anyone know if there is a fix or planned fix for the problem?
As i`m aware there is no fix, it was easy to fix on WiMo, maybe we should spam HTC for this ?
Weather newer worked on my location, but 2 miles away everything is fine
I think they're updating the locations all the time. Mine used to say Bamber Bridge even though I live in Leyland. It played up saying current location as United Kingdom and then started working again and shows my correct location.
I don't think there's any fix for this apart from manually adding your correct location until they get it fixed.

Ok thanks I'll spam them.
I wouldnt be so bothered but this was working last week and I've checked, Sheffield is still a real place....
weather location problem - fix!
I have been looking through other threads and have just found something that seemed to solve this problem.
Turn on the wifi (don't have to connect to any network, literally just have it turned on) and refresh the weather page and the location changes to your current location. Turn the wifi off and it's fine.
It has worked for me so far... I hope this helps someone else. (Phone: HTC Desire HD)

doesn't work for me. Thanks for suggestion though..
That was a solution for phones with winmo and manila 2.1 cooked in. Maybe try newer radio? I only assume that you all are using stock Desire rom... if not maybe check for update from chefs?
I had same issue with stock rom. After movind to Leedroid ones problem disapeared.

From what I can tell from my experience with the Desire weather widget, having accurate location data is largely dependant on connection quality. By this, I mean that if you're connected to wifi, you're going to get a much better read on things. When using GPRS, the weather seems to get a bit more vague - I'm lucky if I get "United Kingdom", since most of the time it will just say "Current location". I can't say what experience you'd get with EDGE or 3G, since I don't live in an area with either.
Your best bet is to ensure you give your phone every available avenue for location data. On a Desire running Froyo, from the Home screen, press:
Menu -> Settings -> Location
Make sure both "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites" are ticked, then back up out to the Home screen. Go back in to the weather widget (for reference, I mean the clock / weather combo widget here) and refresh it. Give it a little bit, and it should (about 75% of the time) update to your proper location.
Some times when this probably won't work / you may still have trouble:
- When you have your device connected to a computer for the purposes of USB file transfer, tethering or HTC Sync.
- When you are connected to a wireless network using an invalid IP (such as having a static IP set to 192.168.1.x in a 0.x range).
- When you find yourself inside a faraday cage, a mile beneath the surface of the Earth.
This is all likely just common sense stuff that most people are doing already, but hope it helps some of you.

[Q] WiFi Location Incorrect

It used to be, when I connected to my WiFi, it new exactly where I was. Now, I think since I have my Desire HD, it thinks my WiFi network is about a mile away.
Even worse, my Dad moved about 200 miles, when he connects to his WiFi it shows him in his old house....
How can these be fixed/corrected?
Thanks.
Hi,
I'm pretty sure that when Google drive about collecting StreetView images they log every wireless network they stumble across, this is then tied to a GPS position.
If you remember in the news recently Google were subject to an investigation because they collected data that was transferring between these wireless networks whilst collecting StreetView images.
Your fathers wireless router would have had it's location plotted previously, but now its incorrect due to him moving.
As for your router, it may have not had it's location plotted so the position you are given is the telephone/broadband exchange that you are using.
Google the website SamKnows and use that to find the location of your exchange, see it these two locations marry up.
Hope this helps

Can't change DNS at Android 5.0

Hey guys. I flashed android lollipop 2 nights ago with fastboot. I am very happy with it so far but there is one major annoyance about it. I can't change DNS.
When I try to modify network settings after I change from to "DHCP" to "Static IP" I can't click save button. I also tried a few applications and all of them gave error.
The only thing I can think about while I was flashing the image I got boot.sig and recovery.sig errors but the guide video was telling to ignore those errors.
I am wondering if rooting the device would help me. I am open to any kind of suggestions.
Thanks a lot.
Might be a dumb answer, but I had that issue as well. Make sure when you fill out the info for static you actually type in ALL information. After I filled out each section manually the save button was lit and I was able to save changes. Not sure though if it worked, ipleak is telling me I still have a bunch of google dns's from around the country. Settings were saved though.
If you want to use dhcp but change the DNS server, this seems to be an open problem.
Can you change the DNS on your router instead of the device? On my Netgear I changed it so all devices use Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) instead of Comcast DNS. Works great, and covers everything connected to it either wired or wireless.
I know that isn't really a solution for the problem, but it might help in the meantime.
I did have to use a static IP. My router is set to use different DNS servers though.

My Nexus 7 (2013) thinks I'm in Pittsburgh...

I'm cross-posting this from my reddit post that got no responses...
So, this is weird and I've been banging my head against the wall for months with this issue. My tablet thinks I'm in the Pittsburgh area, more specifially, at Laszlo Bartos Photography on 541 Peregrine Dr, Irwin, PA. The kicker is, I'm located in Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada. I've never been to Pittsburgh, and haven't been to the USA since September 2014.
For the past few months, my tablet has been giving me weather in Google Now for Irwin, PA and North Huntington, PA. I can't figure out what's causing it. I was running stock Android 5 on my Nexus 7, and have recently completely wiped my tablet out and installed a clean copy of Android 6, but the problem persists, so I'm assuming its something with my Google account. My LG G4 phone (which is also stock) does not have this problem.
I'm not using any sort of VPN or proxy server (just google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4), so I can't figure out why this is happening. Both my phone and tablet are on the same wifi network, and I have another phone with no sim card that is connected to the wifi without this issue.
Even opening up google maps shows me at this address with an active blue dot for the gps. I've changed my location settings to all 3 options, doesn't make any difference. I move around my house, and the dot moves on the map as if I'm in this place. I go and download an app that auto-detects my location as Pittsburgh. I search google for "Movies" and it gives me results for movie theatres around Pittsburgh.
What could be causing this, and more importantly, how can I fix this?
is it an LTE version, or WiFi only? What is the IP address (not the one inside your local LAN, but the one he ISP gives to your service? Have you looked into one of the apps that shows the value of the gps sensor data? (is GPS enabled?) What is the SSID of the WiFi, and have you tried changing it? In other words, all the various info that google/android uses to try to geo-locate you...
You probably tried (and reset) all of these, but the more raw data you provide, the more likely someone can help you with this...
