Need help updating.. - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My r800i runs 2.3.3 build 3.0 stock rom and doomlords kernel.
I know I'm quite slow, but now I want to update to build 4.0, xloud sounds interesting.
so, just want to confirm what to do
1. Flash a 4.0 stock rom
2. Flash doom lord's newest kernel
And I'm done?
Also, I have made a nandroid. Will it restore all my contacts etc when I restore from build 4.0?
Will restoring somehow cause me to go back to 3.0?
Please point me in the right direction.
PS : not sure if it was clear enough but my bootloader is unlocked.

If you flash the latest FW using flashtool. You can update without using data. Rememeber if you have an unlocked bootloader, Never update using SEUS or OTA

Without using data? I'm not entirely sure what you mean...
Also, I've seen enough warnings to know I can't do that.
So is that the correct way to update?

Right download flashtool from here:
http://www.multiupload.com/7H4JT35B6G (Your AV may moan of a virus, Mine did, dont worry it's a false positive i promise)
and download the 4.0.A.2.368 UK .tft file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1221105
Right now unpack flashtool and the .tft file. Place the .tft file in the folder that says "firmware"
Install the gordons gate flash drivers that come with the flashtool package. once installed run flashtool.
choose flash and pick the firmware package. Now look closely, There is a box that says something like wipe data (I'm not sure i can't remember) Anyway just untick it.
All you have to do now it follow onscreen instructions and wait

Maybe its my com's problem. both com and laptop can't flash successfully
Well, I'll just stay on 2.3.3 build 3.0 [:

Sorry dude i was not here, there is another way but i dont know how well it will work. If you download 7-zip and unzip the .tft file. Inside the extracted folder you will find a file called "system.sin." Now you can flash that from fastboot like an .img, with the command "fastboot flash system system.sin."
Only problem with this method is you do not get new baseband/radio. But if you try it and signal is crap you can always revert back to .145 firmware

Is there an alternative to flash tool ?
Because I really want the october update when it arrives.. Heh
Is relocking bl updating by seus and unlocking the only way to go if I want to keep my o/c
capability?

Yeah you can relock bootloader. Update with SEUS, unlock bootloader again and flash custom kernel I have seen people have thoes flashtool issue you had. It's a shame because flashtool always worked great for me

And when I update to another version lets say 2.3.4, in october, the nandroid which I made in 2.3.3, will it work and allow me to stay at 2.3.4?

You can restored nandroids at any time and they will still work, you can do and advanced restore. And just restored /data/ partition

[Q] tutorial? r800i firmware flashtool 2.3.4??

Is there a tutorial to flash the xperia play r800i to generic 2.3.4?? im currently on a stock play using firmware 4.0.A.2.368 and looking to upgrade to the new 2.3.4 02 uk firmware but it says use flashtool.. which flashtool.. do i need unlocked bootloader? root?? im lost and search everwhere all day long to figure it out lol.. probably looking in the wrong places but it is now getting irritating!
Thanks in advance to any of you willing to answer
You do not need neither root nor an unlocked bootloader to use flashtool.
Get flashtool from here (make sure to use 0.2.9.1 beta):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10738287&postcount=1
Get newest FW here (4.0.1.A.0.283):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17708233&postcount=1
When flashtool is downloaded just extract it to your desktop on your pc. Then extract your downloaded FW and put it in the folder named 'firmware' that came with the flashtool download. Then install ggsetup.exe that also comes with the flashtool download (it's a driver package).
Then hit the x10FlashTool.exe. A window will open. Press flash. Another window will open. Choose your firmware. Here you can choose to tick the 'wipe data' box. If you do you'll loose al apps and data stored on your phone. If you don't the apps and data will stay. In the latter case you might run into issues as FC'ing of apps and such, but not sure as people has done this without issues. It's recomended to wipe data but not a must, it's up to you. I would do it but then again I'm also rooted and can restore easily after every flash.
Anyway either way you choose you then press ok and just follow instructions shown on screen.
Remember after flashing and booting (wich can take some time) to enable debugging and unknown sources.

The answer is yes, but you can skip flashing 4.0.A.2.368 and go straight to 4.0.1.A.0.283 - 2.3.4
Regards Dousan...
currently i`m on 2.3.3 Firmware(the xLOUD Update) with unlocked bootloader and doomlord kernel v3.now i want to flash the latest firmware(2.3.4).whats the best way,i read so many threads here and to be honest,i don`t have a clue how i do it best and i don`t want to brick my phone.
so what`s the best way to get to 2.3.4(2.3.3 is draining battery like crazy,i had 45% battery drain to "mobile standby",can`t stand it anymore,i`m losing 10% battery per hour and i`m doing nothing with the phone,it`s simply in standby,so i want the new firmware)
1)simple flashing 2.3.4 with flashtool?
2)must i relock the bootloader before? can i do this with the doomlord kernel in general?(unlock bl,flash doomlord kernel, relock? would be good to know, than i just would relock the bootloader)
3)if i can flash it with flashtool is the bootloader locked again after flashing?
4)why exactly flashtool, can`t i simply flash with wotan server?
@orangesunshine the easiest way is this (imo):
1. Do a backup of phone apps/data. (Titanium backup/my backup root etc.).
2. Flash 4.0.1.A.0.283 with flashtool. (works on locked and unlocked bootloaders (won't brick it with an unlocked BL).
3. Boot CWM (only boot not flash).
4. Flash rootxperia.zip in CWM.
5. Boot phone and restore from the backup you made and enjoy root.
This will leave you with stock kernel and root.
When doomlord releases his kernel for the newest build (4.0.1.A.0.283) you could just flash that instead of doing step 3 and 4 (afiak it's still in testing phase).
Take a look at this post for links and further details:

Update - unbricked using SEUS tool..
Thanks for making that clear mate, Its kinda hard to follow what the hell is going on with the firmwares for xplay.. theres loads of different ones knocking about, talking about unlocked bootloaders, roots.. etc... Coming from all sorts of differnt android devices which i rooted it seems like a heck of alot of work just to get root..
Ive never had the bootloader unlocked, im using the 2.3.4 firmware, I want to root it, but.. this is where i got confused.. the "how to retain root" posts tell u basically how to "retain" root... if i never had root to begin with is it the exact same procedure?
Got me very baffled lol

If you want root and your on build 2.3.4 you'll need to downgrade to a FW/gingerbread build that has a loophole that makes it possible to use an app like gingerbreak or similar to root your phone through that loophole. That got patched in builds higher than 2.3.2 and therefor you need to downgrade and then root. The opdate done via OTA will only opdate part of the FW and won't touch/overwrite the place where root is placed (afaik). So that's why OTA work and doing it via pc companion/SEUS/flashtool won't cuz these ways you flash the whole FW and erease/overwrite all files on the phone.
You could also choose to unlock your bootloader and then boot CWM (clockworkmod) and when booted in that flash a .zip file that roots your phone.

hard reset att xperia play

i remember doing an update and so my play is .285 build. if i do a hard reset will the build change?
i'm interested in rooting my att phone but from what i've read, i cannot do this without changing the firmware (ie downgrading).
i've already tried the suponeclick and another form of 1 click root and none of them work.
Did I stump the experts?
When you do a factory reset the build number remains to what you are current using. If you flash another version, it will become that version. It is kind of obvious.
To achieve what you're trying to do:
Downgrade your firmware version, either use flashtool to flash this tft, or flash back to a stock 2.3.3 firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591398
Turn on USB Debugging and use SuperOneClick to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Download CWM Installer version 5 from here to install CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840
(To get into CWM, keep pressing the Volume down button when the see the Sony logo on boot.)
(Note that since you have a locked bootloader you will not be able to install custom roms so do not attempt it until you unlocked it, however you can install the NXT rom.)

Perform step 1 because SuperOneClick won't work on stock 2.3.4. Here is the guide, however use the tft file from the link I posted previously: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2054486
CWM is clockworkmod recovery, but nevermind if you don't intend to use it. It's only for flashing custom rom and kernel, but you need to unlock your bootloader before you can do that.

If your bootloader is unlocked you don't need X-Parts, if it isn't and you've wiped data then yes, you need to flash a stock ftf, which is what you should have tried already, then start over and when you get back into CWM, flash your backup.

[GUIDE] [ROOT] Xperia ZL .2.67 fw using DooMLoRD Rooting Kit

Root Xperia ZL with Latest .2.67 fw (Yes The Latest 10.3.1.A.2.67)
I Take no credit for this I have done zero development work
All credits to the great @DooMLoRD
This is a just a Guide telling how to implement his method
Requirement
Latest Flashtool https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8hAoiy5gSGVZU5zOHU4TFdJTkk/preview
latest Ftf file for fw .2.67
Ftf file for fw .423
Latest DoomLord Rooting Kit v18 (no else would work in this case)http://www76.zippyshare.com/v/29480564/file.html
Make sure device is on latest .2.67 fw (If not then wait for the official update)
NOTE: We need complete file only to flash the Kernel.sin & Loader.sin
OR
Use the files provided by me which contain the required files only (easier method)
These kernel files are from C6502 if you have another device they might not work. In that case use the complete FTF files for your device and root using complete ftf method
Latest .2.67 Kernel file https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8hAoiy5gSGVWktnM2p1MTk2VFU/edit
Older .423 Kernel file https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8hAoiy5gSGVbmtOY2lyMUc0OXM/edit?pli=1
How (Using complete ftf packages)
Flash only the kernel.sin & loader.sin from older .423ftf package using FlashTool
Uncheck all wipe options
Check all exclude option EXCEPT Exclude Kernel
Now flash this using flashtool
Reboot the device and make sure USB Debugging & Unknown Sources are allowed in settings
Now root using the latest DoomLord Kit v18 (No other version of kit will work)
Turn Off the Device and put in Flash Mode (Press Volume Down while attaching usb cable)
Now open the latest .2.67 ftf package and repeat the check and uncheck process as earlier
Flash only the Kernel.sin & Loader.sin
Reboot the Device
Done !!
OR
How (Using given ftf files) EASIER WAY
These kernel files are from C6502 if you have another device they might not work. In that case use the complete FTF files for your device and root using complete ftf method
Flash the .423 kernel ftf package using FlashTool
Reboot the device and make sure USB Debugging & Unknown Sources are allowed in settings
Now root using the latest DoomLord Kit v18 (No other version of kit will work)
Turn Off the Device and put in Flash Mode (Press Volume Down while attaching usb cable)
Now open the latest .2.67 kernel ftf package and flash it
Reboot the Device
Done !!
I take no responsibility for any kind of damage to your Phone
Do all this at your own risk
Thankyou @DooMLoRD for your great work

http://www76.zippyshare.com/v/29480564/file.html @DooMLoRD I mirrored it without permission because I was getting many requests for the link
If theres is problem do PM me I will remove it
Thank You
Thanks for the guide!
The mobile ist rooted allright, but i noticed that the information (in the settings) about the kernel Version is the same as the one when I had flashed the .423 kernel. Did sth. go wrong? According to Flashtool flashing the kernels was successful. I added a screenshot of the current status. Is this the right .67 kernel?

Yes I dont think there should be any problem
See mine is also the same
Could someone share a prerooted flashable zip of the newest firmware for those who don't have access to a pc?

For some reason the doomlord exploit kept repeating device not found error so I wasn't able to flash. I installed the flash/fastboot drivers, wondering if I missed anything.

On mine, the numbers are the same and I have just flashed via PC Companion and did not root yet.
As sanjulgupta mentioned my ADB drivers were incorrect. I went through this process, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446666 for the drivers, it works now!
Thanks, worked like a charm

Yes, follow the same process as previous build with the exception that you need SU 278 or above

i had just seen video for creating ftf after downloading from xperifirm. in video i view that they had excluded simlock.ta, but i have firmware which is customized for India.
should i include simlock.ta or exclude it, while creating ftf...?

you are always WELCOME @vishal7743
to answer you simlock.ta question. this option is available if you run FLASHTOOL in ADVANCE mode.
its highly NOT RECOMMENDED.
for everyone, always run flashtool in basic mode and not to touch simlock settings. i have read cases when later device never got registered to network at all.

@YasuHamed yes you are absolutely right, actually I excluded simlock.ta while making ftf from flashtool...i just ensured from services menu where it was written simlock status as undefined so it made clear that there is no need for simlock.ta, it's running without any problems
Should we wipe first?

It's not necessary. Unless you are willing.
