How to backup live wallpaper? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to unlock my boot loader and root my phone, but I've heard doing so wipes all data off of your phone. There is a certain live wall paper I would like to keep which is no longer available on the market.
How would I go about saving this file somewhere? Without having root access in the first place ofcourse.
Any tips much appreciated.

You dont need an unlocked bootloader to root your phone
if you root your phone first (theres a thread bout it in android development section) and install Titanium backup/MyBACKUPROOT and backup your wallpaper it should be saved
Unlock Bootloader,regain root access,restore!

Do I not need to flash down to 2.3.2 to use that root method? I'm currently on 2.3.3. Would flashing down wipe the phone?
Or is there a new root method?

[Q] Root without OTA

I'm currently on 2.3.3, and don't want to unlock the bootloader due to warranty, so I wanted to try the Gingerbreak option, but my carrier doesn't seem to do OTA updates (currently no 2.3.4, no 2.3.3 when I got the phone), so I'd be stuck on an old firmware. If I do unlock the bootloader, how do I get root while keeping the stock ROM? I don't want to lose the native emulator.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
You dont loose the stock rom unlocking the bootloader. Just all your data. Furthermore the native emulator has nothing to do with the rom you use, each classic PS game comes with it's own emulator built into the .apk file.

So I could use the FreeXperia ROM and PSXperia will still work?
Also, how do I backup my current stock ROM? Root, and backup with that recovery mode app off the market?

Yes as far as i know, as long as you install some prerequisite apps like preinstalledservices.apk. You can play the classic PS games on cyanogenmod You cannot use nandroid backup (from recovery) without unlocking your bootloader. There are some backup apps on the market but they all require root too. That recovery mode app you talk about, you mean rom manager? well atm rom manager is not compatinle with any of the 2011 xperia devices
Oh, so we have to install and backup ROMs through ADB? Does the ClockworkMod recovery work?

Clockworkmod recovey works, doomlords kernel comes with it embedded.

Ok, so I was on 2.3.3, unlocked bootloader, everything was fine, then I flashed the play_modded.img using Fastboot as said in the "Root your Play" thread, it worked, but I booted the phone up to find that it's 2.3.2, old as hell, the UK version, won't recognise my New Zealand SIM, and everything is force closing. I reset to factory settings, still no SIM but most force closing was fixed. I noticed the MTP thing force closes though.
I'm now downloading the 2.3.3 UK ROM, but I want my original Vodafone 2.3.3 NZ/AUS ROM, then install Doomlords kernel for autoroot. SE PC Companion isn't showing an update option to restore to said ROM. ):
Edit: Installed the 2.3.3 UK ROM and Doomkernel and everything works fine! Thanks, AndroHero.

[Q] Will root stay after updating?

I have been doing some reading and have decided to go root my new phone (Xplay in Europe) with zergrush from out of the box. But I have a question:
After rooting my phone and I decide to accept OTA-updates afterwards (without deleting anything), will I lose my rooting, or will it still be rooted?
(Sorry, didn´t realize that I was in the "general" section when I posted. Any mod, feel free to move this to the q&a section.)
You'll lose it.

Thanks for answering.
Is there anything I could do to not be forced to stay on the lowest version?
I guess the OTA will update it to the latest version in one go?
If you root and remove any of the system apps, OTA won't work. And depending on the method you use, if you unlock the bootloader as well, OTA can brick you.

So I guess the right way to go is this (please correct me if I´m wrong):
1. Use Flashtool to get on firmware 2.3.4
2. Use Flashtool to Zergrush
3. Rooted and done.
Is there something I should be aware of in this process?

Although why you would want to root and not do anything else is a mystery.
Did you mean to say what can you do besides root? In that case, we would need to know what model of phone you have in order to polnt you in the right direction.

Even I had the same questions..
I'm on an R800i ..
Android: 2.3.4
Build: 4.0.2.A.0.62
I just got the phone this week, so I'll be happy with the stock rom for a few months..
All I wanna do is root it, so I can remove the bloatware..
(If possible, without having to unlock the bootloader for now)
My last phone was the LG P500 .. and all I needed to root that was run the gingerbreak apk.
Any chance of that working here?
Also, there is a sticky in the dev section for how to root, but that now redirects to a page [WIP] ClockworkMod Recovery - FreeXperia page..
So really confused..
Do I install CWM and then flash that file for rooting?
(is it possible to install cwm without rooting?)
Or do I root it using some other method, and then flash CWM using what that thread says?
Uber confused..
it is not possible to root Rombuild .62 you need to downgrade your rom to.40
dang..
and for downgrading I'd have to use flashtool, right?
wouldn't that format the phone as well?

R800x 2.3.4 root

I'm just curious but has anyone uncovered a way to root the Xperia play on Verizon running 2.3.4. The only way I've found is to downgrade to 2.3.3

If you have the RootXperia.zip from Blagus (original clockwork mod recovery boot.img thread), you can flash that via Clockwork Mod. Make sure you have CWM installed first (unlocked bootloader).
Sent from my R800x using XDA
There really is no point in using 2.3.4.
Unless you love new bloatware, no root, and many other problems
Use flashtool to get back to 2.3.3 and enjoy the fun!
i have root on 2.3.4 but i can't remember the steps. and yes there is no point on having 2.3.4
If you flash to 2.3.3, root it, and then update to 2.3.4 you will have rooted 2.3.4
Thats the good news
The bad news is, 2.3.4 doesn't connect to Google's servers properly (rooted or not) so you annoyingly can't use gtalk, and a couple other features, you have to manually refresh your Gmail, calendar, etc (It does it once per day otherwise), can no longer "buy apps" on the web and have them pushed to your phone automatically. And some apps with push notifications no longer notify.
Is the only way to unlock the bootloader for the r800x to use the paid method from unlock-bootloader.com ?
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
If you unlock your bootloader you can flash Super User zip from
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
That is the classic and easiest way to root a device with an unlocked bootloader
Just instal it in recovery and your good to go!
Yes for the R800x the only BL unlock method is for 24$
I'm on 2.3.2, does 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 have access to the PS Store app?
I had thought about updating to a newer version, but damn, I can't believe all those issues with 2.3.4

You should ftf to 2.3.3. It is the most stable Gingerbread version for the R800x.
Or you can always use UK ROM
I have rooted my R800x wth the original gingerbreak exploit chew

I really want 2.3.4. I couldn't give less f*cks about bloatware. They do nothing. I want the screenshot and other things they added. But Doom never updated his kernel to support the camera. Oh well.

Hi guys... I was looking here on the forum any solution for my problem and couldnt find it out, sorry if theres a topic about it, I couldn't find it.
I've got my Xperia Arc S 2.3.4 4.0.2.A.0.62 LT18i and I've rooted it with the doomlord tool, it worked fine and looked like if it rooted normally but now I can't install any app coz it says that its not root, needs to install supersu and/or busybox so ok, I've tried to install SuperSu but when I open it, it says that there is no binary files and cant install it... I've updated its version and also tried to reinstall but no way, always the same message. =/ Does anyone know how to solve it?
Thanks.
You can't root. 62 using the zergrush root.
Best way is to downgrade the kernel to. 42 then root, then upgrade to .62 either by ota or by using flashtools.

Can enlighten about the upgrade via flashtool as I lost root if upgrade via flashtool. Usually wipe is all tick, exclude & verfication is left untick when flash upgrade root .42 to .62?
