[Q] Custom ROMs and international APNs - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I travel more than average and prefer to insert a local SIM card whenever I land so as not to get ripped off, which is one of the reasons I bought a SIM free desire.
I want to put custom ROMs on it but am concerned that they might not have the international APN settings. The last phone I put custom ROMs on was WM5 and the ROMs didn't have this feature.
So....
Will the customs come with this ?
If some don't how do I tell if it's available on a specific ROM and is there a way to add if it's not ?
Thanks for any help

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

Thanks.
Anyone got ideas on this one ?

Nobody knows anything about this ?

Most custom rom's have a pretty complete apn list.
if you come across one that doesn't just replace the file /system/etc/apns-conf.xml with a more complete version of the file, I allways use the one from cyanogenmod if I have any problems.
But as I said, most (if not all) established rom's have a good apn list so I wouldn't worry unless your using an unstable experimental rom thats in its very early stages.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Thanks, exactly what I was after

Upgrading O2 XDA Ignito - Problems sorted

Sorry to bother you, I'm sure this info is somewhere (or if I understood it a bit better), but if someone could clear a few things up:
1) Have downloaded Hard-SPL 1.23, 1.34 and the latest version - is the newer better/more stable? Or I do have to use the one that matches the ROM I am flashing to?
2) If I want to do a cooked a ROM, will any of the versions of Hard-SPL listed above work for that too?
3) Is there an easy way to back up operator settings (internet, voice mail number etc?) Just got it so there's nothing else on it that needs backing up.
4) Offical ROMs are in .exe format, can I just install them on to my XDA?
Edit: Found the official ROMs, just required looking through several pages (sorry). Can anyone answer the other questions, especially how to back-up network settings.
For the mo I just want to get rid of the O2 branding.
Thanks for your time - have been a mod on several forums and I know you end up having to answer questions 20 times over.
Cheers,
Joe
Regarding Hard SPL, read here fully and carefully. It will tell you all you need to know.
With regards to ROMs, you could use the official ones but you will find AZTOR ROMs far superior. (AZTOR = Alpha Zero Tweaked Official ROM) or alternatively Shaks.P ROM in my signature which is set up for the UK. Both will automatically detect your network and use the correct settings and both are as stable as the original ROMs but with improved performance
I have a UK o2 xda ignito, and the only hard spl I have used is 1.93 from this thread.

Most of the modded roms can be flashed with the included utilities. But most of the official 2.03 roms can only be flashed from internal storage.
Any info you need can be found with the search function, with a little time.
All the best.

Responding To Questions:
1) It doesn't have to match your original SPL...if the one you have downloaded works then use it. Very few chefs recommend a specific Hard SPL with there ROM. But this is so rare.
2) if you want to flash a unsigned ROM then you need a developers edition Hards SPL.....or jocky's works as well....I personally use 1.93 so I recommend that one.
3) don't worry about backing up operators settings.....most of these roms come with a "Connection Setup" which allows you to select from a list of operators and it does everything for you. I also have a little app for this if your rom doesn't have this.
@Everyone: thanks for your help.
Will install the 1.93 Developers HSPL and see how that goes.
Can anyone recommend a ROM (don't want any visual tweaks)?
Thanks again
Asking such a question can close this thread .........
This is out of the respect of the chefs who work hard. Please refrain from this topic regarding best roms, etc.
Just try them out and read the threads.

I understand people have put a lot of hard work in and have taken a look at a few cooked ROMs, and fully intend to start cooking my own when (if) I have learned the skills.
However just got it and it has O2 branding, so i'd like to play with the original interface for a day or two before I start seeing what can really be done with the interface
Yeah, good idea, this will allow you to compare the true difference between a original and a cooked Rom. That is where one can begin to truly see how much better a cooked Rom is.
AZTOR version for UK?
Gonna try the AZTOR, looks like its got some solid improvements without affecting the UI, which version (WWE/GER) are using for the UK Mike?
Thanks again everyone, you've been a great help.

Sorry to disappoint you but but judging from the download link ROM version 1.93 is ye olde slow softwear.
2.07 is HTC's newest ROM and there's already a german Vodafone ROM 2.09.
i know its old, but its better than the 1.37 t-mobile were previously using
I get a couple of problems when using other roms as they disable some of t-mobiles features like mobile-tv, youtube and limits the internet sites you can visit.
Im not very good with compiling roms so unless someone can get the t-mobile cabs for that out of this rom and put it in a nice new wm6.5 rom for me, this will have to do

I'm with T-mobile UK using the Diamond with EnergyROM and have no problem with any websites i use, if you want to give some examples I'd like to try it out and see if there is any problem there for me.
As for apps, EnergyROM (standard version which i'm using at least) and I'm sure a number of others have the YouTube app in, not sure what the mobile-tv thing is as I havent had the t-mobile ROM for a long time, I'll take a look and see if I can find it for you.
I can't believe t-mobile have finally upgraded from the ancient 1.37 rom!
1.93 is also old and should have been released last summer - only 1 year late t-mobile.
We moved on along time ago. T-Mobile UK must be the worst operator for releasing updated roms.

As far as T-mobile are concerned if you use anything other than the ROM they provide, or updates from their site, your warranty is void.
That being said if you need to send it back to them under warranty one of 2 things is likely, either
A) you'll still be able to get it to bootloader and then put the t-mobile rom back on it, in which case I doubt the returns centre will notice whether i has hardSPL on or not, they're hardly thorough in their testing.
or
B) the phone will be so dead you can't get to the bootloader in which case t-mobile won't be able to either and won't know what you did to it. I have once or twice sent bricked HTC devices back to networks under warranty, they've always just replaced them for me.
Anyway as far as how to flash the T-mobile rom to your device, just use the Custom RUU.exe and the .nbh file from T-Mobile. If you open the executable that you downloaded from T-Mobile with 7Zip (or some other archive manager) you can extract the files from it. I did this with mine last night just to check out the t-mobile rom, then went straight back to a custom rom.

[Ask Your Questions Here] Questions And Answers for Vogue Users

All,
Due to good success in the Blue Angel section, I have decided to open a Questions and Answers thread on this section of the forum as well. This will be good to keep the number of new threads with questions down to a minimum, which will make new threads essentially for people that are contributing to the Vogue in any way. This includes but is not limited to people that are providing
*New Roms and Kitchens
*Programs and Apps
*Fixes
*Skins
*Tips and Tricks
However, I have a life (and so do most of you), which is why I would like to request the help from other Seniors (or anyone who knows the answer really ) to monitor the thread as well. This will have the added side effect of creating an ever self updating knowledge base that will far extend the content of the Wiki. This will in turn save us from having to answer the same question 37000 times...
Without further ado, lets go for it!

GOOD IDEA!
Hi there Gents any input
Barogi awesome so far for v2; media player not staying in full screen mode though, and manila home weather under clock wont update when you push update now also getting error message for manila home on reboot
Great idea for a faq page!
I have been using a NFSfan rom on my bell vogue for a while, and it crapped out today for some reason. Rather than put another WM build on it, I wanted to change to Android.
I have looked through many pages in here, but I can't find a simple tutorial on switch from a custom WM build to a Android build. I prefer to use the NAND method so that I don't ever have to see WM again...
Can someone create or point me towards a step-by-step guide for installing Android? Keep in mind that I have absolutely no Android experience, and that my custom ROM is completely messed up, so would it make for sense to flash the a manf build and upgrade from there?
Thanks

As far as WMP, Barogi will have to look into it since it is his rom.
One last thing, please do not double post. Thanks for understanding...
I have a question:
I recently flashed the Bell rom with the latest radio (I couldn't get the radio only nbh to apply properly), and then subsequently flashed with the latest NagROM rom (which is awesome btw).
Now of course, at startup i have the nice HTC screen with the rom version etc, followed by an AWFUL blue BELL screen (and then the nice orange wm6.5 screen).
Is it possible to change the blue BELL screen? And if so how?

There was a cab to change that somewhere around here in this section of the forum. Alternatively, you can flash NFSFan's rom (which will get rid of it), or you can try mine as well and then reflash Nag's rom.

Hey everyone,
So I was running NSFANS 6.5 ROM on my device (Amazing ROM btw) But I needed to revert back to the stock rom. I used the VZW updater to go back to the stock rom and I changed the esn on line. When I dialed the *228 and choose option 1 I got a failed message. So I called customer support and he walked me through a manual programing. Well that got voice working but when I went to use the data it wouldn't work. I made sure all the network settings were right, and I still couldn't connect. Well then I hard reset the device and now I am back to square 1. No voice no data. Is this something from NSFANS rom that is messing the phone up? I don't want to call again because their tech support takes forever and I am afraid they are just going to tell me to take the phone into the store. Thanks in advance!

Why did you change the E$N? Where you using the device in a different carrier?
Back to your problem. Your EPST settings should survive a hard reset as those are parameters that are not stored in Windows (afaik). It really makes not difference which rom you are using (at least for Voice and SMS).
Lets focus on your main phone's capabilities first. If your EPST settings truly got lost, you will need to get them from Verizon again. The main ones are the MSD and MIN. Make sure that you write them down this time as you will need them again if they go bye bye.
As for your internet, you will probably need to set the correct username in the phone's programming as well (also info that you will need from Verizon, but it should be something like [email protected] or something like that)
Do that and let me know if this works. They will have to program this for you this time, but once you have the values that I mentioned before, you will be able to do it yourself.

Try to get Barogi's latest "lite" rom. Also, you can't go wrong with vin's 28014 or NFSFan's rom. I would recommend mine, but I think they might be a little heavy for what you want. Good luck.
i checked out NSFSfan. It was nice, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much for what I want. Ill check out the other you suggested before i just flash back to stock rom

Try to avoid stock if you can... it has a bad tendency of being too heavy on the extra apps.
I checked out just SS's of both. Both look awesome, but theres something about the simple look ( or im just used to it since my 8125 ) of the stock look. I would like to have the look but the added memory of a cooked rom.
With NSFSfans, could you remove the today screen plug ins to get back to a more stock look?
Im runnin 2.1 android eclair at the moment, and im barley pulling a full day battery with no data/bluetooth. With the old winmo, I was getting 2.5 days-3days. Thats another main concern for me.

HELP!! How can i install operating system on my phone? Demo Version finished

Hi, I bought a HTC touch pro 2 phone a couple months back with windows mobile 6.5 on the phone and today i woke up to find that the operating system was some beta version and that it has run out so now the phone is not working. There is no information anywhere what to do.
I have tryed going on the htc site and downloading software but when i put the serial number in it says that it is not suitable
How can i install an operating system that will work or even get this version to work
Any help would be apprecitated
What an incredibly weird problem.
Your best bet* is to go to your carrier's website (rather than HTC's) and download their most current ROM.
Alternatively, you could download one of hundreds of custom ROMs here or on other sites. Just make sure you use a GSM ROM if you have a GSM phone or a CDMA ROM if you have a CDMA phone.
*Many are going to insist that a custom ROM is your best bet. Since you don't seem to be very familiar with these concepts I really think a stock ROM from your carrier is the best place to start in order to get your phone working again.

It sounds like you bought a used phone that someone had put a custom rom on. Ive heard people discuss in the NRG Rom thread that some of the roms previous to April 1st would expire on the first of may. This sounds all too similar.
My advice... flash a new rom. Especially if you DID but the phone used. That's like what is going on. Do some reading in the Rom sub forum and you'll see what I'm talking. find the NRG Rom thread and search "expiration" or something.
Hope this helps some!
Hi, It expired on the 1st may so i guess that might be what the problem is. How can i instal i new rom? and where can i get this information. Do you have any links?
Thanks

[Q] Adding Shortcuts on Home Page

Dear all,
I have HTC TP2 device, and I tried to add shortcuts on the home page, when I got the steps from the HTC site, I could not apply them, can anybody help me in this?
- I could not find the '+' button.
- When I press and hold on an icon in the start menu, I can find only one command in the popup menu (Move to top).
---
From HTC site:
Personalizing Your Home Screen: Shortcuts
Placing shortcuts on your Home screen gives you quick access to your favorite programs, contacts you most frequently communicate with, and other information.
Adding a shortcut
Press HOME and then tap the + button. You can also press and hold an empty area on the Home screen.
When the Add to Home options menu opens, tap Shortcut.
Select the type of shortcut to add to the Home screen. You can create a shortcut to a Bookmark, Gmail label, your mail inbox, music playlist, a contact, or a program.
To quickly add an application shortcut that is on the All programs screen to the Home screen, press and hold an application icon. When the phone vibrates, drag the icon to an empty area on the Home screen, and then release it.
This can only be done if you are running Sense 2.5. Most TP2/Tilt2 phones came with TouchFlo 3D or an earlier version of Sense. These have a Programs page where you can choose which program icons you want to appear, but they won't be on the Home page.
Thanks a lot for you reply. May you please tell me what is the difference between Sense and TouchFlo, are they two different programs, which is better and if those programs are supported from HTC or not. In other words, can I go to an HTC shop in my country to install it for me or it is downloadable from their site?

You can get in touch with your carrier to see if an upgrade is warranted for your device. Only a couple of carriers got the Sense "upgrade." It is considerably slower than TF3D if you go through their options. If you really want to experience Sense the way it should be, try one of the many custom ROMs on this site.
Thanks a lot. Can you refer me to one of the good ROMs here in the forum.
What country, carrier are you on?
Couple reason I ask this. Firstly, some carriers released an official ROM update to Sense 2.5.
Also, custom ROMs on this website are limited to GSM versions of the TP2, although there is CDMA subforum, with links to ROMs for CDMA devices.

Even though some carriers released updates to Sense from TF3D, I don't think it's a good idea to use them. I have yet to see a single one that was stable enough for continued use. They are generally resource intensive. Chefs of custom ROMs take the device's hardware into consideration unlike the carriers who only seem to want to load it with their own software.

Some people seemed pleased with the latest ATT ROM with Sense 2.5. I never flashed it, so I can't personally comment. And the shipped ROM was so horrible, I have trouble believing it myself. Plus, you get the usual ATT bloat. But I mentioned the possibility of an official ROM update, only because many people are scared of flashing a custom ROM.
But I completely agree with you that a custom ROM is probably the way to go.
To the OP, poking around on the internet, I see that Vodafone in Egypt is GSM, so you can use the custom ROMs on this website.

Thanks a lot. Yes Vodafone Egypt is a GSM operator. Can you tell me whether I can backup my original ROM before I flash a cooked one (in case I needed it) ... And also please refer me to the best cooked ROM here and the steps to flash/install it on my device.
Your reply is highly appreciated.
All you need to flash a custom ROM is on the ROM Development subforum for the TP2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=490
The resources pinned to the top of the subforum are extremely helpful, and indispensable.
One of them is an excellent step-by-step guide for flashing a custom ROM, written for beginners:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
As indicated in the guide, you will need to HardSPL the phone. This unlocks SPL (secondary program loader), which is normally locked so you can only flash "official" ROMs from your carrier. HardSPL is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131
Also, optional, but highly recommended (I do it before EVERY new ROM flash) is running Task29. This formats the ROM area of the memory, and completely wipes it, so no old fragment of previous ROM linger to screw up the new ROM. It only takes a couple minutes to perform, and can possibly save you the headache of some random bugs.

Flashing is really not hard. Just read as much as you can on the threads I linked, and follow the instructions carefully. The threads are really long, and you don't have to read the whole thing, but read as much as you have patience for. Any question or issue you can possibly have about the process has probably been encountered by someone else already, and a solution/answer already posted. The more you know before you start, the less you will panic when something doesn't go exactly as you expected.
Keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM will void any warranty you may still have. Although, people generally have luck re-flashing the stock ROM, and re-locking SPL before returning for warranty service, so the repair people actually have no idea the ROM was ever modified. Also, keep in mind that there is a slight possibility of "bricking" or disabling your phone. But follow the instructions and be careful, and it won't happen. Main things to remember, is never mess with the phone (power off, unplug) while its flashing, make sure you have at least 50% battery at each step, and flash the correct software (flashing a CDMA ROM to a GSM phone, or ROM for a completely different phone are highly probably ways to brick it). But normally, it is very safe. People on here have flashed custom ROMs onto their phone dozens, maybe even hundreds of times, without ever bricking their phones.
There is no correct answer to the question "what is the best ROM". Its like asking "what clothes are best to wear", there is no correct answer, it depends on your personal tastes and needs. The best ROM for you depends on how much you want looks and functions over speed and stability, what software you want packed-in, or if you want a minimum of built-in software (a "lightweight" ROM), and to install your desired software yourself. Look through the various ROMs to see the features of each one, look at replies from users, which thread are most popular, and pick for yourself. If you still need some suggestions, Energy, simplicity, Jackos, and Valkyrie are popular. But it would be an injustice to other chefs to suggest that other ROMs are not just as great. If you scan through the ROM Development subforum, you will see some threads along the lines of "what ROM is best, fastest, etc.", and you can look at those for more suggestions/opinions.
Also be sure to read through the first several posts on the ROM thread you pick to flash, as there are often specific instructions and FAQs for that ROM posted by the chef.
You don't need to backup your old ROM. If you need to return to the stock ROM for some reason, just go to shipped-roms.com and download it:
http://shipped-roms.com/
You will however, lose your personal data (contacts, texts, email) when you flash the ROM. There are a bunch of ways to back these up. Microsoft My Phone, synching to your PC on Outlook, or if you are a Gmail person, using Google Synch, are all popular methods.

Dear redpoint73,
Really thanks a million, you unleashed a lot of information to me with your very descriptive answer . As I'm new to the Windows phones world, I was confused with its terminologies like chief, ROM, cooking, flashing ... etc etc. But now it is very much easier than ever ... Thank you.
