So I got root. Ran Clockwork Mod. Backed up to the SD card. Rebooted.
Now I'm stuck between the Clockwork recovery screen (if I power/camera/volume down) and another apparent recovery screen (regular power on) that says in blue "Android system recovery (2e)" and at the bottom, in yellow, "# Manual Mode #" . . .
I'm not able to get out of these two screens. I've pulled the battery and the card, chosen the "reboot" option, chosen the "restore" option (CWM), etc.
Can anyone help me get my phone working again?
Thanks in advance!
I would odin back to stock if you can get into dl mode
Can you reflash your ROM in the CWM? If not then Odin or Heimdall would be easiest then restore your backup.
Thanks guys. I used Odin - lost all my data (which I was of course trying to avoid), but got my phone back.
So, I've learned 2 valuable things here:
1. I was able to get root (sort of).
2. I was able to recover my phone (but not my data).
Does anyone have an idea as to how I got stuck in that loop in the first place - and, more to the point, how I can get past it so I can actually use my phone after I get root?
Although I'm very busy (work full-time, school full-time), I'm willing to make a reasonable donation to someone who's able to spend a little time to get me off and running.
Use odin to install something thats pre rooted like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1221614
Your situation is kind of unique. But as mentioned above Odining a prerooted ROM will help. Didn't you say you backed up before all this happened? Why did you lose your data? Root and restore.

Thanks, I did get most of my stuff back. I'm still kind of a n00b at this, so it wasn't apparent until I started looking for it. I thought it was gone because my apps were, and I hadn't yet reupped gmail, so my contacts list wasn't apparent. In the end, other than having to remember all the apps I wanted to get back, the only real disappointment was that I lost my place in the game Big Time Gangsta, so I had to start over. I was up to level 53!
In reality, though, the only thing that was super important to me, my contacts, came back. So I'm a pretty happy camper. I was also able to Odin up that rooted Gingerbread and, to top it off, I now have a free tether hooked up and working - my rationale for rooting the phone in the first place.
I do appreciate everyone's help. Sure I'll be back with more questions!
Marco
Glad we could help
Not yet rooted - stuck in manual mode
I was in the beginning stages of rooting, couldn't get anything to happen when I was in Downloading mode. I then booted with Vol Down-Camera-Power, and I can't get OUT of it. I have no OK button, and the Camera button isn't working to reboot/select. Please help!!!

Hello,
I was trying to flash a new Rom onto my phone (Superfly) and installed the .zip file from clockwork, however, when I try to boot the phone, it sticks at the Mytouch slide screen.
I cant load into the card nor the phone.
Is there any way to reverse this?
Thanks in advance!
Hopefully you made a backup. You should still be able to boot into recovery and restore your backup or even flash a new rom.

The problem the OP and myself are having is that we cant load Clockwork recovery, and I think its cause when we flashed the new rom, it did away with USB debugging mode, and now we cant get back into the OS to select it again. I too am stuck in this loop, and I might just have to bite the bullet and bring it in to tmo and tell em it just stopped working for no reason...

The USB debugging option means nothing while booted in to recovery. If you haven't flashed the engineering rom before you will need to redo the loop/ota.zip/update.zip spoof to get back in to clockwork.
I did do a nandroid backup, but the phone magically can not find it now. And It took forever to get to work, but I was finally able to get back into clockwork and tried to install another a different rom (Kanged CM6 ROM) but ended with the same results of sticking on the mytouch slide startup screen. Frustrating, because it probably took about 3 hours to get back into clockwork!
Any other suggestions???
wipe everything on the phone, find the thread that walks you through that

As was noted previously, if you haven't flashed the ESPRIMG rom, you're basically looking at re-rooting your phone every time you want to install a different rom. This means going through the whole process again and again and again.

thats weird, cause before I could get into clockwork after 2 tries max, not I tried repeatedly for 10 mins and it didnt work, so I should just keep tryin to get into clock work then?
Yes, keep trying. And when you do, please flash the engineering rom and keep the proper update.zip on your card! It will save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

will do, theres alot of assumptions around here tho, and newbs to android are kinda expected to know things without them being stated in the threads..
Now I know theres something that makes it so I dont have to go thru the pain of rooting to get into clockwork I'm def gna use it..
what method should I use? Ive been doing the following and no luck so far
1 - cd to android sdk tools folder
2 - vol down + power for recovery
3 - highlight recovery
4 - run loop in cmd
5 - plug usb into phone
6 - plug usb into pc, and before it changes to HBOOT from USB i hit power to select recovery
7 - adb devices sees it as an offline device for a few cycles, then it disappears.
after step 7 I've tried running update.zip
unplugging and plugging back in
ctrl+c to stop the script when its offline
unplug when its noticed as an offline device
whats the best way to get into it now?
======
EDIT - finally got it into recovery, i loaded up htc's recover with it plugged it to the pc so it loaded up HBOOT from USB
normally your are not bricked if:
1. you can boot into recovery
2. you can not boot into recovery yet you can boot into bootloader [HOLD (power + volume down) to boot]
Don't worry I got a black/blank screen of death the other day for flashing the wrong boot.img fortunately I was able to boot into bootloader and start from scratch using the ESPRIMG.zip

I agree to an extent, but if you take the time to read through things thoroughly (as in every post in the How To Root or Engineering Build or even Rom Bible thread), you'll be okay. This is my first Android device as well. I put off rooting for a solid couple of weeks while I read through everything I could. I was completely paranoid about bricking my phone. Eventually, I went for it. Even then I had a couple hiccups along the way (including have to re-root two more times), but all the information is here.
So an update:
I went to a Tmobile retail store to see if I could do a direct swap and am having a new phone sent out to me. I will definately take all the replies into consideration when starting the root process on my new one! My final question is, since I am afraid Tmobile will not find my phone valid to be replaced under warranty due to it being rooted, is there any way to unroot and go back to stock? I have googled it, but cannot find anything specific for the slide...
Thanks!

My question: did u search here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=660
And found items about the champion build and this little file named ESPRIMG.zip?
U can also check out the ROM BIBLE stickie post.
u can try this:

or you can try this:

now if you really searched you would of found your own question:

I had the same problem you did, and fixed my phone, so its possible. refer to my post on the first page and then refer to this post and use the mirror that Wes himself posted.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7001053&postcount=7
Alright. For starters, xda has been VERY VERY helpful to me over the past few months and I thank everyone who has ever contributed to a question or a discussion I have read. That being said, this is my first post. I watched the newb video, read many forums (both xda and others), google searched, read some more threads, kept reading threads, tried some methods described in some threads, bookmarked some interesting threads for if my phone ever works again, and read some more threads.
I am not saying the answer is not already out there, I am saying I have reached my resourcefulness cap.
Anyway, to the root of the problem: I'm not entirely new to rooting, and am comfortable using recovery and hboot to flash roms. I also had a nandroid backup! for SOME SILLY reason, while in my clockworkmod recovery this morning (maybe slightly due to being half asleep which is why I now recommend being fully awake before entering hboot or recovery or rom manager....etc) I formatted the system on my phone. I THINK.
My phone will now load up to display the bootloader, and go into recovery mode, and flash roms, but when I flash a rom, nothing changes. If I boot my phone up, it will show a notification bar at the top like usual, a stock wallpaper, and that is IT! it will show a message notification and missed call icon since I have them, but the touch screen will not work. The rosie buttons at the bottom do not show up (i.e. phone button or all aps button) no apps appear, no clocks except for in the notification bar... hardkeys have no effect (home button search button menu or back) and volume keys will not work. The lock button will only lock and unlock the screen, not power off or reboot or anything. If plugged in at this point, it is charger only.
So, I can take the micro sd card out and put files on it from my PC via a microsd-usb converter thing...
I have tried putting new roms on the sd and flashing them from recovery, no effect. Tried the RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe program, it always says that my phone has below 30% battery and will not continue (this is not the case as I have two batteries both have been fully charged because the phone will still charge them...)
And I have tried putting PC36IMG.zip files on my sd card to no avail.
I am thinking that the system was wiped because it seems like there is no boot image on the phones internal memory itself. I am currently looking for a way to place a boot image on the sd card to possibly flash it or some sort of update.zip so that my bootloader will ask me to update upon reading it.
Sorry for the long post, and ask any questions I will answer as best I can.
I am posting preemptively to the boot image adventure so that if it does not work, maybe I can have some help finding a solution by then.
I was going to take my evo to the sprint store since it is under warranty but if they go into recovery they will see clockworkmod recovery.
Thanks to all for any form of guidance!
I did just notice in my Bootloader menu (HBOOT-2.10.0001) that it says Supersonice evt2-3 **** S-ON
I don't know how because I thought it was a requirement that it says S-OFF to be rooted and flash roms, but I have definitely flashed roms before and gained su access to applications and such. BUT since it says S-ON would it then be covered by the warranty if it is not rooted?
Thanks again.
I you want to flash a boot image, you can take the boot.img from an RUU for the firmware you are, place it in your adb tools folder, then flash it using the commands:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
I'm not sure how to identify what firmware I am. Unless your talking about the Hboot version? and also, I can't place anything in any folder except onto my sd card. I have no access other than that to the phone. On the sd card there are no files except for what I put on there.
...aaand not to mention I don't know what adb is exactly...
Does your phone still go to clockwork when you go to recovery?
Am going to try it right now, but will that work if I cannot tell my phone to allow usb debugging? i remember something about unrevoked needing that to root the phone in the first place. will update as soon as I try it. May not have time right now as I have to leave in about 15 mins. If no reply by 9:45, then I will be back online tomorrow morning. and thanks!

Yes it still goes to clockwork because its rooted.. now my screen legitimately does not work in certain areas of the screen (not responding to touch) so I'm going to try and get it stock stock stock unrooted and go for warranty replacement. Any ideas please let me know. Currently trying RUU Supersonic...
So, I got an ERROR [110] message from the RUU package its a file open error... :/ now i dont know what is up. Says I need a complete RUU package. Looking for another one or another option now.
If i boot phone normally now it just goes to a black screen with "htc" in the middle and "!" in a triangle in all four corners. Can't do anything from that screen.
If I boot into bootloader once where it says SHIP S-OFF at the top and instead of recovery and all those options it just says RUU but you cant do anything there... :/ I now, however cannot even get to the bootloader screen.
Could they tell it is rooted?
Maybe I could say I finally decided to do sprints OTA update that I've been denying for a while and this is the result.
Anyone agree disagree?
COCLUSION!
So. Since it has just the HTC logo and four error icons one in each corner... I took it into a sprint repair store. It would not boot into bootloader as a hard reset, so the guys at the store were stumped. They had actually never seen this before =). They asked me if I rooted it and all so I just played dumb. I told em I didn't know what that really was. They kinna explained it and I told em I didn't even have a computer (not a lie actually I sold mine and now use my dads or gfs lol). The logo on the screen was an oooold htc logo from like hero or so. So they just put it in the system as a wont even turn on type of thing and gave me a new phone since I was under warranty =) gonna see if I can live without root juuust for a little bit because work and school are gonna keep me busy for a while. I am certain to return though!
Can't wait to see what the devs can do by then!
Thanks to all for the help!
Phone was being used by an employee but I had rooted it and was running Skyraider very happy with it. The guy left and took the memory card. I had to do a reset to get his gmail out of the phone but I forgot to do it through recovery and did it from the phone menu. Now the phone will not do 3g or internet and when I go into recovery I get cwm 5.xxx but none of the functions will work, I just get the hat with the circle and have to pull the batt to get out of it. Tried Rom manager and it just Fcs, Tried unrevoked and it never saw the phone.
Im stuck and need to get this thing working for work. Please help
To select options in recovery, use the optical button not the power button.
Damn using the Incred2 all this time I forgot about that button. Any idea if doing a reset from the phone menu would cause the lack of internet.

That's fairly unusual but I've never performed that within the rom. You should be fine once you wipe and flash another rom.
maybe the guy turned off the mobile network. You could always flash a new ROM or reflash the current one and have everything back to normal hopefully
So I thought I would give up my inexperienced life of flashing and possibly bricking my device(sent it in to get jtag repaired), so I attempted to put it back to stock. I got odin up and running, Downloaded(for the most part) the tar that would make it stock again. about 98% into the flashing it failed and made me a little nervous. I later remembered to flash the kernel, and with it, the phone booted up. Fine and dandy one day yadda yadda yadda.
Now comes day 2, and it just randomly turned off and booted again. it got to the little android boot screen, then shut down again, rinse repeat at different times of the boot process, add in some random shutdowns when I'm at the home screen and using my phone and there you have it.
I figured it was using an unfinished stock rom trying it's best to function, so I tried to put in clockwork mod. I did, but it was very difficult as I navigated through clockwork recovery, the phone would select things on its own, making the rooting process a giant pain. With that monkey on my back, I managed to root and install the juggernaut v.5 rom(which totally rocks) to see if the probably persists. The end result was it still happened, but when it didn't, I was able to work with it normally. At this point in time, I am trying to keep my phone turned on because if for a second the screen shuts off, the phone will start trying to shut itself down and game over. This is still very very annoying and was wondering if you fine people would happen to point someone thats green as grass with this stuff in the right direction

You have definitely earned my thanks for providing such hearty solutions! I am super paranoid now when it comes to downloading files like those. my major concern is if the files never download completely :O I followed what was in that first thread to tooth, and as I installed that md5 towards the end I got a giant fail. regardless, I thank you for the awesome support man:good:
Hmm, try reflashing your recovery. Mount your USB (If you cant, take out your SD card, and mount it on your PC) and place this file on the root of your SD card( Just easier to find this way)

Flash it, and restart recovery. Your recovery should act normal, and do a clean install of whatever ROM you wish. By the way, Juggs was my first DD (daily driver) to!!

Did you do a clean install? Darkside Superwipe, flash ROM, reboot, wait ten minutes, then reboot?
Sent from AOKP Goodness :-D
Yeah unfortunately it is still randomly rebooting....washing lol
An update to this: all the same symptoms occur, but for some reason when I flashed darkside rom 3 the symptoms occurred less! For example, last night I was able to use this device for 4 hours straight without it acting up. I really wonder what the problem is. I. Mean the thing acts like an angel when in Odin mode, but when it comes. To cwm or anything else it tends to spaz out.
I too have this happening now. I don't know why its been doing it. I was running the latest aokp and than it started rebooting and shutting off. So I went back to my nandroid backup and still continues. Running darkside v7, and problem is still there. Anyone know why this is happening?
It started happening while listening to music.

So I went to a T-Mobile store earlier and they told me they can't replace my phone because I'm rooted and they think its the rom, even tho I showed them.
I have to odin flash the original stock rom and go back to T-Mobile to get it replaced.
Know any way you can flash back without an internet connection on a computer?

In the non touch clockwork recovery use menu to scroll down. Home to scroll up. Back to go back. And search to select. I figured it out by my power button clicking things.

So I went to a T-Mobile store earlier and they told me they can't replace my phone because I'm rooted and they think its the rom, even tho I showed them.
I have to odin flash the original stock rom and go back to T-Mobile to get it replaced.
Know any way you can flash back without an internet connection on a computer?

the only way i know how is through odin. I've done it a few times. at the end of the flashing I find that the phone turns itself off or something which marks it down in odin as a FAIL..when in actuality it flashed....it just needs a kernel flash and it'll all be candysticks and lollipops.
At this point in my phones life though, however, it is increasingly harder to do anything in clockwork since the button is fudged up. I think I might have to pony up 35$, but if you can Odin your phone back to flash and tell T-Mobile/Samsung about it, you can probably get the repair for free
I posted this elsewhere, as XDA was in the blocked sites.
Only 3 hours left at work now though, and for some reason, all sites seem to not be blocked! (Who knows how long this will last)
So, long time android user here. Yet, for some reason, I have never, EVER done a backup.
Never needed to. Odds are, stock backups are online if you REALLY dun goofed, but I never really have data I care about between wipes, phones, and new ROMs (I would, but google backs up 99% of what I want backed up). However, only one ROM has 4.3 for my phone from a ROM maker I trust. However, since I put so much work into my current setup, I thought that I should do a backup, for once, since I was assuming the 4.3 build may have issues, I'd rather restore a backup then reflash, and spend a good hour gettings all my settings and app setting restored.
Info, before I get to the problem.
Optimus G for my phone, running on the Sprint network. I'm using a rootbox ROM, which is synced to the very latest kernals. Everything has been running flawlessly on my phone for a while now. I am using TWRP recovery, and the ROM is 4.2.2, with stock gapps (not that that matters, but I info is useful to someone). Also, the phone was at a 72% charge.
So, I start the backup, going well, although a tad slow compared to a wipe or flash. Then the screen goes black. I'd say the bar was about 30% finished in TWRP. I thought it may have been the screen going in to sleep mode, as it's done this when I leave the phone sitting after a flash, but alas. It was not. The power button did nothing. So I hold the power button, turn it off. Nothing.
Now here's the fun part. I CAN get in to the alternate booscreen. However, on my phone it's....just a screen. There are no options, and I don't remember anything beyond when getting it the instructions were "press down on the volume key twice and press power to enter into recover mode" which, does not work. The phone has been VERY weird at this point. When unplugged, nothing can happen at all almost as if the battery is dead. Sometimes trying to get into the bootloader the LED light flashes red, along with the "hard" key button lights flashing (what are those called? The hard keys on phones that aren't keys, but a surface you touch. I refraid from softkeys because that usually is talking about the NavBar). I CAN get in to download mode, but right now I am at work, and will be for the next 6 hours. Many, MANY sites are blocked here, and thankfully, tek syndicate is not one of them. However, I am very limited and no sources to download any software needed to fix the issue.
If no one has suggestions beyond using download mode, feel free to post those links. I could most likely find all that info on my own when I get home. I'm no stranger to android at all, although never.....dare I say it, bricked anything before. I assume this would be not that hard to fix with download mode, and I'm hoping that maybe someone has a link that works here at work, and can be used with these computers.
The alternate question, or, TL;DR How could performing a backup cause a brick? I was backing up using TWRP, for the first time, on 4.2.2 android and during backup, black screen, can use bootloader, and download mode, but will not boot into ROM or recovery, as well as no actions at all without being plugged in.
Thank you in advance!
If this post in convoluted, I'm basically asking why this would have happened. After that, any suggestions to fix it without using download mode would be good, but I will take download mode suggestion as either the site may not be blocked here at work, or I could use the link when I get home later.
sprint g(ls970,if i'm not mistaking) is different than e975/e973.
What version of twrp were you using?i know twrp 2.4 has some issues on restore, but never heard of problems at backup.
You could try tinybin, but not sure if it's good for ls970.anyway,since you are at work, maybe you should wait until you get home,to have acces to full resources.

Sometimes the phone gets confused about the battery. Plug it into the wall for a few minutes, then boot it to the bootloader. From there reboot to recovery and just let it charge.
