S On but still rooted - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

About two weeks ago I was going to unroot my EVO but I changed my mind, but I had gotten as far as turning my s On. But it's still rooted I have since changed roms and downloaded root only apps does that need to be off? and that its still on will it mess up anything or charge me for hot spot? And if so how do I turn it off? When I turned it back on I was running froyo 4.5 now I'm running Mikk G 2.5

If you want to regain s-off, it's simple. Download the unrevoked forever zip & flash it through recovery. Having s-on will prevent you from flashing unofficial PC36IMG zips through hboot, and possibly keep certain apps from working properly.

If you have S-On but a custom ROM you are fine. Use your hotspot for free

In order to unroot you need to RUU the phone. either the PC36IMG.zip or the RUU.exe which ever you did the first step which was the s-on patch now you need to complete the process by ruu'ing back to stock....
edit: sorry I obviously didn't fully read your question... just flash unrevoked s-off patch to gain back s-off but everyone is right your fine

Thanks for all the info guys it is greatly apprehended

[Q] Back to stock after 2.2 root method

ATM my phone is completely stock, no roots have ever been preformed on it. If I was to use the root method that has surfaced a few days ago, are their ways to return my phone back to stock with no signs of having ever been rooted and if so, would somebody been kind to create a guide for this method.
Yea i was trying to see about this myself. I'm sure as long as you didn't use "unrevoked forever" to u could just download the latest update off of the htc website and flash that to your phone. But even with unrevoked forever I'm sure there's a fix out there.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sure. Run the latest ruu and then flash the S-on package. You'll be unrooted stock.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I got that leaked 2.2 ruu(the one to fix the .3 to .6 from xda poji) I would run that and then s-on package and be all good to go?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If you've rooted, you can run the .6 RUU and it should take you back to stock, with 2 caveats:
* If you used Toast's part 2 to NAND unlock, you'll have to try and get your PRI updated, which is hit and miss
* If you used Unrevoked + Unrevoked Forever, you just have to flash the new Unrevoked Forever S-ON package
Do whichever of those is appropriate, then use this RUU:

I had some issues come up with my rooted DInc today and ended up returning to official stock 2.2 Version & then rerooting.
I took the most recent OTA after returning to stock 2.2 because I forgot about the issue. BUT, I downloaded the UnRevoked Tool and rooted agian with it.
I had a new problem with the tool hanging up while trying to root. I was getting the message "waiting for root (safe to restart if this fails)" But my phone was at the white HBOOT menu screen and I just selected the FASTBOOT Menu & then the REBOOT option. My phone rebooted and the tool finished its job. I am a noob so correct me if I am wrong but I think I have the most current update installed and am happily rooted.

If you are S-On and received the latest "Nov 15th" (or 14th??) OTA update, then take a look at -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9384491&postcount=199 and some of the posts following it.
It worked for me on my GF's AMOLED INC that had S-On and had already received the "Nov 15th" OTA update. Her's is now rooted with S-OFF.
They are testing their new fix today!

Hoping Final Exams are done for them. Hoping testing doesn't take long. Really, I was hoping to have this before this evening, but I will be patient...I'm guessing early next week.

Its doubtful anyone would work on a rom for a phone thats not permarooted yet
you can't really flash anything and have it stick since the phone is still in S-ON
Why do we need s-off though? My original inc wasn't s-off and I was able to flash anything I wanted, other than update the radio firmware, which I was able to do after I s-off'd it...

INC is not the incredible 2, and the phones are actually very different.
With s-on we can not write to /system on either, except while in recovery, but even then only with signed updates.
The first incredible had a race condition in recovery, that occasionally allowed adbD to run, thus giving more access.

OTA update question.

i recently updated to the new gingerbread 2.3 OTA update. I did do some research before updateing but i obviously didnt do enough because i missed the part that 2.3 is unrootable. Today i was doing some searches and saw a few posts that said if you had previously flashed unrevoked forever to your evo. you could reflash back to a previous version. m question is if that is possible and how?
If you still have s-off it is possible
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
if you had previously rooted with unrevoked forever, you will still have S-OFF. to check it, power down then hold volume down and the power button...it'll take you to the HBOOT screen. check the top of the screen....it'll tell you if you are S-OFF or S-ON...if S-OFF, reflash a custom recovery (either Amon_RA or ClockworkMOD; i recommend Amon_RA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026) and then you can reboot into recovery and start flashing away again

Ok it ways s-on. Now that I think about it I remember having to turn it back to s-on in order to flash the OTA update. I was under the impression that no matter what you did unrevoked forever would keep your phone flashable even with the s-on. I think I missed something. This is my first Android phone I've had Windows mobile for so long I'm still adjusting to how all the technical things work. Thanks for all your help and patience. So is it possible to somehow revert back or flash something to turn s-off? Or to make it reversible to a version that's rootable?

No, you'll have to wait for a new root method

Pc36img.zip

Alright. I own a droid x and it is extremely simple to root and unroot. My bro-in-law had me help him root his evo using unrevoked3. Now he wants the GB update but cannot get it. Long story short. I flashed the s-on file and it worked. However, when I put the pc36img.zip on the sd card and enter the bootloader, it automatically starts searching the image and I get the error below.
Main version is older!
Update failed
2.15.00.11.19 baseband
Android 2.2 stock everything.
Can someone please help me get his evo unrooted?

Why are you unrooting his device? If it's to get the OTA 2.3.3 update, wouldn't it be easier to flash a rooted stock froyo rom, go to the system update setting and then update? Of course, I'm assuming that is what you're trying to do so forgive me if I misunderstood your post.

Ok, sorry for not being very informed. He tried to update to the ota but it failed. I assumed that it must be because the s-off since he hadn't done anything but tether.
He really has no need to be rooted because the only thing he wanted todo was tether. Now, I have turned the s-on, but the pc36img fails to update.
Is it safe to just check for/install the system up? Or does the phone need to be unrooted?

If you already have S-On, all you need to do is flash the ruu that coincides with software 3.70 or 3.29. You can download any of the ruus for the EVO by clicking on the RUU link in my signature. Also, there's a link to rooted stock roms in my link, as well.

Awesome! Thank you very much. I'm on my phone now, so I'll check it out when I get to my laptop.
Before you do something you will regret, go back and use unrevoked asap. Get back to S-off. If you turn S-on, and then take the update, you can not go back at the moment.

Honestly, my bro-in-law doesn't need root. Here I am trying to fix his problem. I've spent more time on this than I should. I mod my X, but the evo confuses me some.
Are you saying he can take the ota rooted, with s-on?
You need S-Off for permanent root and ability to flash custom ROMs. So before you take the OTA for him, as long as the phone is 2.2, run Unrevoked once again and install AmonRa.
Does he even like Sense? I would suggest trying one of the setups from my sig, or even MIUI if he doesn't need 4G.
You could have S-On and get the OTA, which would make his phone unrootable and boring, or you could just root back and flash a ROM with better battery life (I hear that Calkulin's works great, but so do other ROMs)
Before you do anything, try showing him pictures of MIUI, SalvageMod, MikG or another ROM and ask what he likes best.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Oh, and he would need a custom ROM with tethering unlocked for the ability to tether for free. And he would need S-Off to put that ROM on.

I understood from your earlier post that your brother-in-law didn't need root and thus the reasons for the answers I gave. Yes, he can accept the OTA while S-ON and he will indeed upgrade his device to 2.3.3, however, should he wish to unroot afterwards, he won't be able to until an exploit can be found. I take it your friend isn't the type of person who flashes roms, mods, kernels and such.

check your hboot version and S off status
if its hboot 2.16 and S on, you are boned since you unrooted it when you took the gb update
so basically...dont tell your friend that you screwed his chances to root yourself lol
the correct route would have been to flash with a rooted stock GB ota wich was already out there, but its too late now : /

you can thether without being rooted
download pdanet app on phone and on pc you want to tether on
hotspot requires root or paying sprint though
I really appreciate everyones help, don't get me wrong. However, I'm sitting here doing all this research and trying to get help for my in-law who thought he needed root and wanted to tether. He doesn't even use tether. I'm not showing him any custom roms. He lives three hours away and i'd be doing all his leg work/fixing his problems.
All I want to do (and him as well) is get him to gb stock unrooted and be done with his phone.
So, if the s-on is on, but the su app is still in the app drawer, and the pc36img.zip failed. If he selects settings>about phone>check for updates, will this get him to gb?
