If this is going to be considered a duplicate thread, my apologies in advance. I know Sprint is waiving ETF's for cancelled contracts - but - Can a contract be cancelled and put month-to-month? I just spoke to a Sprint rep and they told me no... but I'm pretty sure it can be done. She said they'd only waive the ETF if I leave sprint all together.
Has anyone successfully done this, and if so, what kind of wording do I need to use and who do I need to talk to?
I'm in the same boat. I have a 5-line plan 12-months from renewal, and we'd like to get iPhones and/or the SGS II when they both become available in the next month or so. Was hoping to use the ETF issue to get the upgrade window bumped up, but looks like we might have to switch carriers altogether.
Sprint doesn't offer prepaid service directly (prepaid and month to month are the same, afaik there are no postpaid monthly options from any carrier). If you want it, you'll have to switch to Virgin Mobile or Boost Wireless. They are both prepaid carriers running on Sprint's network.
Problem is they only accept their own devices on their network (edit for clarification: virgin, boost, and sprint each have a different portfolio of models with little to no overlap) so you'd have to resort to a fair bit of hackery that I'm not sure you want to get into.
I guess what it might come down to for you is either continue rest of your contract with Sprint out or bail and go to a different carrier. There are other prepaid carriers that will let you bring your own device; just none that use the Sprint network.

Prepaid is NOT the same as month to month. Month to month = what happens when your contract runs out.

I had mine waived on all 3 lines I have with Sprint a few weeks ago. I am on what you could call a month-to-month plan now with them. All that means is I can leave when ever I want without the ETF but as long as I'm a Sprint customer I still have to wait the remainder of my upgrade time before I can get the discounted price on a new device. I had a long list of issues with Sprint reception that they had records of going back almost 10 years which is the reason they decided not to charge the ETF. The only reason I'm still with them is I don't want to pay VZW $80 more for less of a plan.

that is correct, I had my contract run out and I was afraid I was going to be canceled by sprint and lose all my perks since I had no contract, but they said no everything would be the same and I would be paying on a month to month basis instead.

What the fluff? what does it matter to them? Theyre still getting your money.

I've read you need to wait something along the lines of 3-6 months after leaving in order to be considered a new customer for phone pricing.

If you want to sign a 2 year contract again?
Wow that's retarted. If you cancel your contract and go month to month, that means you can just leave. But then if you feel like staying with sprint, they should let you sign on for 2 years again. What's the incentive? I would be better off canceling my sprint contract for free and with the 109.99 a month go and get a great plan on verizon (albeit throttled and/or capped) as a new customer with a $199 new phone as opposed to the 499 it'd be with sprint.
This is just stupid businesspractice, but either way I'm staying on as my contract is due for an upgrade in october
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
wait i just realized...if it takes 3-6 months to be recognized as new, doesnt that mean i can cancel with no etf and then still take my upgrade on october 6(HERO LAUNCH DATE ) and then drop em since im not obligated to stay with them and then come back on as a new customer and get another phone this time on a 2 year contract?

this may be a little of topic but i have question. i just recently purchased a Nexus s 4g for my sister (fifth teens coming up) i have my main line with my ET4G a second one with a EVO and now i want a third one for the nexus . for some reason sprint is making me sign ANOTHER 2 year contract even though im providing the handset myself. iv googled it and it seems like its a hit or miss sort of thing. anybody ever been in this situation? is there a way to get around having to sign a 2 year contract since i am not going to get another handset at a discounted price? any help much appreciated.
if you provide the equipment you do NOT have to sign a 2 yr.
If they try to make you then tell them they are incorrect. The 2 year contract is to gain the discount to purchase the phone.

Not if you're adding a new line. Getting another phone on an existing line wont affect your contract if you pay full price for it, or you already owned it. But if you're adding a line, you have to sign a contract for that new line.

AFAIK, the only carrier in the US (besides the little guys like MetroPCS, maybe,) that allows you to bring a phone and avoid a contract altogether is T-Mobile.

only in California. but everywhere else, yes, you have to sign the 2 year service agreement. but, you still have eligibility from that day forward, so you can get a phone at a discounted rate. think of it like this: when you add a new discount to your account (employer/organization discount), you sign a new contract without affect eligibility. same goes for $50-100 service credits offered to customers who are 2-4 months from contract end but are not interested in a new phone. eligibility and contract terms are actually 2 separate time-lines. the only reason you sign the contract for a new phone is to guarantee sprint you're going to stay with them, in turn subsidizing the heavy discounting they gave you. (i work in a sprint store )
Even if you sign a contract will there be a ETF if you quit? I thought your etf decreases over time as sprint makes their money back from the subsidy. If they don't have to subsidize you're phone what does that mean? Anyone here know the answer?

Etf still applies. That's just part of the terms, sprint wants you to stay with em. It is prorated though. For feature phones, it goes down by $10/month after 5 months til a minimum of $50. Smartphones prorate by $20/month after 5 months until thy reach $100
This message will self-destruct in 30 seconds.
The etf should be only 200 even though it is an advanced device, since you aren't receiving a discount on an advanced device. If you have a discount on your line the etf starts at 200 anyway.
There have been reports of people activating the evo view tablet month to month with a few callbacks to customer care. Just a matter of getting the right person on the phone. In the store I don't think the software allows us to bypass it.

so I am currently locked in contract for two lines and receive a discount on both currently. when feb 1 comes I will be allowed to get off contract with no etf. my questions are these. 1. could I get off contract and stay on a month to month they sprint? 2. if I can't do 1, would I be able to get off contract by terminating both lines then come back to a month to month? or would I not be allowed back? I just want to get off this damn contract but stay with sprint so I have options of different carriers in the future. thanks in advance guys!
Huh?
Just don't do anything when your contract is up and it automatically just goes month to month. I'm not sure what your asking or wanting to know I guess.

As has been stated many times, an employee discount is not part of your contract. Thus, you will not be able to use the new change as a way to get out etf free.

this is correct. it is NOT detailed in your signed contract that a stipulation of your agreement was the discount off of the 129.99, rather than the 109.99 its changing to. they will still charge you to cancel. many customers come to my store having been with sprint for YEARS and will NOT sign a new contract. personally, contracts dont mean a THING to me for 2 reasons
1. Im not willing to go to another carrier to pay more money for less service...
2. If you ARE willing to go somewhere else; you have to buy new phones, pay more monthly, receive LIMITED data, and possibly pay deposits, so a simple (possibly prorated) ETF should be a drop in the bucket to you...
ok cool. thanks guys. got my 00001 prp on now. so its only a matter of time anyways.

how long do you have left on each phone contract wise? are the other 2 smartphones? what was the etf on each phone?
unless you have a documented history of issues with verizon over multiple phones/lines on ur account in regards to service, they wont let you out w/ etf or until you are off contract
id do the math on ur etf and decide what to do then
We've got 2 smartphones and one dummy phone. At $210 a month it's a bit steep.
The current ETF is $625 to end the contract.
Replacement phone plan is only $90 a month.
So $120 a month would pay off that ETF pretty quickly.
I've heard about some sites that would let users trade off thier plans and phones a while ago, I just can't remember anything else.

Indeed, going with a regional carrier with prepaid service. More minutes, same texting, same data.

We certainly don't want you leave us. Is there anything we can do to change your mind about canceling the service?
You do have the option of having someone take over the line by completing an Assumption of Liability (AOL) You would have to agree to release the line to them and after a credit check, they can take over the line and put it in their name.

Why is verizon even on xda
A: to figure oit how to break root and screw us more
B: Damage control since they know they are loosing customers.
Why doesnt verizon worry about putting out uodates to fix issues instead of trying to break root all the time.
Though I have been happy with Verizon for the past 8 years or so, I too may look elsewhere when my contract is up.

For me it's really just about the money, the phone bill is getting out of hand, and I can switch to prepaid phones, with data for a lot less money each month.
and yes, babies do take up a lot of money.
I also want out of my VZW contract. If it were just me I wouldn't care about the price changes... The price difference isn't anything too extreme for me. However, I have my father and my grandmother on my plan -- both of them have basic phones and I only charge them $30 each month TOTAL. Their payment would basically double.
Plus I don't want to lose my unlimited data (even though I don't think I have EVER used over 2GB).
My husband is on AT&T (he desperately wanted the iPhone and didn't want to wait for VZW to get it) so I will probably end up switching unless Verizon changes their new pricing before next September.

No, I know that. It would just be cheaper for us to be on the same plan by about $20. Since DH is ADAMANT about being able to use talk & data at the same time, I'll end up on his plan. Not my first choice, trust me. My very first cell phone in HS was a prepaid VZW plan. I've been with them now for 10 years with GREAT customer service. I'll be sad to leave.

Right I just mentioned that for now GS4 is unavailable for prepaid users so I had to subscribe for a contract to order it.
I did the same thing.
I have a prepaid account but I signed up for a new line and purchased the phone outright.
i know a bunch of other people on this forum did the same thing.
I am wondering if anyone canceled yet also and how they did it.
Can it be done on the live chat?
Yeah I looked on the T-Mobile site...no Galaxy S4 for prepaid phones. You have to give them your State ID and SSN to subscribe to a "no contract plan" where you pay the full price of the phone+$70/month. Which is complete bullcrap, because prepaid is the exact same thing, minus being forced to give T-Mobile your State ID/SSN for no reason at all. It's not just T-Mobile either, it's the same way with Sprint. Carriers want as much of your information as they can get; it's not enough you pay for service and the phone anymore.
My issue was much more interesting that anyone here experienced I believe.
When I ordered to my SSN and ID they haven't approve me and I was very wondering why cause I have a great credit score.
Then I contacted credit bureau and find out that my credit score fall <<400 that is unbelievable. Further speech and I realized that I've become a victim of identity theft. Now they confirmed this and recalculated my credit score as it should be. But to save time I had to order GS4 with my girfriend's papers.
Thanks GS4 that I've found identity theft so early.
The only one thing I have to do is cancel the contract once I receive it tomorrow.
So as I bought phone outright should I call somewhere to cancel it or I can just utilize sim card that I receive?
I'm also a prepaid customer, ended up buying the phone full price. Just hate the fact that even if you're paying the ful price you still have to sign up for service. I hope the only thing we have to do is give them a call and cancel the new line.

I also want to use the S4 on the $30 prepaid plan, and therefore intended to go the route of buying the phone with a $50 line and then cancel it.
I tried to buy online, but it told me I needed to contact a sales rep to complete the order. After starting an online chat with a sales rep, it turned out they required me to pay an additional $400 deposit. (I am pretty sure I never had an incidence with my credit rating so I am not sure why) As I intended to move over to pre-paid, I asked about the policy of how to get back the deposit if I cancel the line before the 1 year is up after which you automatically get back the deposit. After that she started to accuse me of committing fraud! and that t-mobile is not in the business of selling phones. I then asked her how asking about cancellation would violate their new un-carrier marketing and she asked me "where I came up with such a thing as un-carrier". She then simply canceled my order and hung up on me.
I don't think I have ever been accused of committing fraud before for wanting to pay a store over $1000 to buy their product!
I then tried to order again to get a more knowledgeable and competent representative. Unfortunately this time my bank decided t-mobile was "committing fraud" because they thought a $1000 was an unreasonably large amount for a internet transaction.
After the bank unblocked my credit card, because I told them I really do want to spend that much on a phone, I tried it again. Unfortunately on the third time the "account verification department " declined my request without an explanation of why they wouldn't take my $1000.
So I spent about 3 hours on the phone with t-mobile on Monday and I still don't have a S4 I don't think I have ever had a company as adamant to not taking my money as t-mobile. Now I'll have to wait till the 15th before I can try and buy it in a store
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong, or how to convince t-mobile to sell me a phone?

That's horrible. The reps are obviously just confused with the whole new setup. Every rep I talk to gives me a different story on how/when my classic plan will convert over to the new value plan.

Reps are stupid. I would try and see if you can get it price matched at best buy and buy it there. They should since it will be off contract and you're paying full price. I just don't think they have it in stock yet.

Looks like you won't be able to do it before 15 except asking your relative/friend to do it for you, as I've done it.
Their credit dept haven't approve me since I had credit alert on my credit history due to identity fraud.
Your situation, did they tell you why you should pay 400 deposit?
Have u ever had their postpaid account before? Cause if you've never cancelled their contracts before and had no issues with credit score then I'd suggest to contact credit score bureau and figure out from there why you've been declined.
Veteran T-Mobile customers still on a classic plan may be interested. In connection with adding members to my current classic family plan, I was told that because we've been T-Mobile customers for more than eight years the $150 per line migration fee would be waived for the current family plan members.
I'll want to see it confirmed at My T-Mobile, but as explained in the T-Mobile store this results in a lower monthly value plan rate and outright ownership of our Galaxy SIII 32GB phones. The store salesman had to call corporate to make it work. He did so because I balked at paying migration fees just to add additional members to an existing family plan.
Obviously, I don't know whether a shorter customer relationship or other considerations also may work. But it's worth a try.
Tmobile has always been good to their long time customers. As long as its within reason they will usually do whatever they can to keep your business, especially if they think you might leave!
That's been my experience anyway.

Yes. They gave my wife and me a great deal on our SIIIs at the end of last September.

Keep watch on your bill... They offered me the same thing when I went in to a store and upgraded to the s3, then two months later they tried to charge a migration fee of $150 for my line only and not my wife's strangely enough. I had to call and explain how that never agreed to pay a migration fee to a couple of different people before I got a supervisor to correct the issue, so all in all it worked out fine, just make sure they do what they say they are going to do. T-Mobile customer since 03, and a very happy one at that!
I've been with them since 06..bill is starting to get too expensive.. Might have to try something with them

I got almost the same exact thing. Except mine was only for one phone, and I got the 16GB instead of 32GB. But I also got an extra $100 credit on my account. In addition to the $10 a month, $50 Rebate, and I also got one or two other things, but I cant remember right now!
I have four lines on my account, each with contracts. I've been with Tmobile for 7 yrs. What are my chances of getting all migration fees waived?

Thanks for the heads-up. FWIW, I did speak with a phone representative this morning who said that their system shows the fee having been waived on both lines.

I was told the migration fees were waived because we've been customers for more than eight years. But if you don't ask you'll never know. Good luck. Please let us know your result.

I wish I could say the same about t-mobile. I've been with them for 8 years. Recently I moved to an area in Mississippi, and where I live, in and around my house, I do NOT get phone reception. If I want to make a call, or send a text, I have to walk/drive half a mile down the road to get reception.
The "engineers" at t-mobile "looked into it," and they "concluded" that there were no problems.
My roommates have att, and the get great reception anywhere inside the house.
All t-mobile did for me was lower my bill from 130/month to $100. So I'm still paying $100/month for service that I can't even use. I wish I knew a way out.

No wi-fi calling on Cyanogenmod.
Also I don't have wireless internet either.
Let's say I did have wifi, and let's say cyanogenmod had wifi calling.
Should I still be content in paying $100/month for something that I never use?

Go back to TW
Get a wireless router.
?
Profit!
I just saw the $25 x 24 months option with $0 down for the Galaxy S4 and tried to upgrade online. It said there was a $100 migration fee so I called customer care, got sent to loyalty then to customer care again and the lady refused to remove the fee. She literally argued with me that it's essential that they charge the fee because it compensates for early upgrades since you get a discounted price. I even told her I'd likely be changing providers then, and she still said it't not possible to waive it.
Errr, so frustrated.

Hey guys,
I have been with T-mobile for 10 years. I have 4 lines with truly Unlimited everything, getting ready to add a 5th line, my bill is 180.00, now after BS TAXES I pay 222.00.. No Carrier can beat that! Every time I have a big issue with T-mobile the only way to resolve the issue is quite simple but takes a little more time. WRIGHT THEM A LETTER! Don't email them, don't call them, just wright them a letter about your problem and mail it to their corporate offices. You will get a call from them in about 2 weeks with a possible resolution to your problem. I like T-mobile allot and I have only needed to wright 2 letters to them and both time they went above my exceptions. Most problems can be fixed by calling them but when you get no were with them wright a letter.

A booster just might fix your problem. they run about 200+ bucks but you may get T-mobile to comp it.

Well, unfortunately, you do have to be a customer for 8 years or more, and I've only been a customer for 6 yrs 7 months. Migration fees will not be waived.
I wish I could tell them I want more then Edge where I live...
Waived my fees!
Just want to confirm that I called T-Mobile today to see if I could switch over to the simple choice plan with 5 lines. I was previously on the older family plan. 5 lines with 2gb data and unlimited text and I was paying $210 per month. The first person I talked to would not make a change for me. I told them I have been with T Moibile for 15 years. I was transferred to Customer retention. They proceeded to tell me that they could only reduce the migration fees to $300. I said no thinks and hung up. I called back 5 minutes later and the rep waived all of the migration fees for me no questions asked. Just wanted to let you know this works and say thanks to the OP for pointing it out! Moral of the story... If at first you don't succeed, call back and keep trying!

Persistence and politeness often succeed. Just the other day, I noticed that, although the change-over to the new plan occurred with only two days left in my service month, my T-Mobile bill showed a full $10 for the 2.5GB data option. A pleasant conversation with a T-Mobile representative whom I had asked to explain and confirm all the items of this transitional bill resulted in the $10 charge being waived.
It doesn't always work. And sometimes it can be quite frustrating. But I don't generally find that haranguing a service rep gets me anywhere.

I have had nothing but good luck with T-Mobile reps working with me. I agree that harassing them and threatening to leave etc will get you nowhere.
