Hi all, I just recently updated my Defy from CM7 RC1v2 to a nightly (110825-0058). Back when I was on RC1, I used Wifi Tether from the market and followed the instructions on a modaco thread (pushing the hostapd from an update zip into /system/bin), and was able to share my 3g data over wifi flawlessly. Now after upgrading to the nightly, Wifi tether no longer works (getting an error in the log that says failed to intialize wifi and hostapd. The stock Portable Wifi hotspot feature in the Wireless/Network settings also won't allow me to share 3g data (It only seems to work, I'm getting the portable hotspot active icon in the notification area and can successfully connect to my phone AP, but I get limited connectivity and am unable to open any web pages. I've checked my ip settings and everything is fine (same settings i used back in RC1). My 3G data is also enabled, and am able to browse the web just fine on the phone. Upon checking system info, my kernel is already 179-4 (which is what supposedly works with the wifi hotspot feature accdg. to the main CM7 dev thread). PLEASE HELP.....I used this feature a lot and had no problems with it back in RC1....

I'm running CM 7.1 RC1 (tried the latest nightlies as well..) in my Desire Z.
Recently my Wifi stopped finding networks. If I turn on Wifi in the settings, it displays no available networks (the remembered ones are still shown as "Not in Range" though), and says it is connecting. If I do however start Wifi Analyzer before turning on the wifi (turning Wifi on via the pull down menu thing) Wifi Analyser says "Turning on Wifi, please wait.." and then finds the networks available. After that my phone connects just fine.
Any idea what I could do to fix it..?
The latest Nightly (160) fixed it.
I am able to get wireless tethering to work unencrypted, but as soon as I turn on encryption ( tried all different encryption modes ) it gives me the message "tethering started with errors! Please check 'Show log'"
show log says "activating encryption (iwconfig)...failed
Any ideas on how to resolve this? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless tether app to no avail. Thanks for any help.
I believe the ET4G can only do ad hoc so security is not supported out of the box. Someone will have to hack infrastructure mode.
i tried playing my xbox and it doesnt work.. i could easily do it with my evo 3d..
I'm having the same issue with encryption on wifi tethering. Error in iwconfig shows up in logs. Everything else works fine.
Adhock mode being the limitation doesn't seem to make sense... as I recall EVO 4G ran that way too and encryption worked... don't quote me though I could be wrong
Anyone have anything else on this?
OK I read up, seems the EVO could do Infrastructure mode. Man I'm starting to miss that suckers fucntionality... Bring on the fixes and custom ROM's!
I have the same problem, Epic 4G touch with Calkulin ROM, and I think it has something to do with the WiFi Tether app. If I use the Sprint Hotspot app I can set encryption just fine, everything works fine and dandy. But if I switch over to WiFi Tether app, when I enable "iwconfig" encryption it says there is an issue in log. If I use "WPA_supplecant" it enables the wifi network but doesn't apply any sort of encryption. And I'm absolutely positive the Sprint Hotspot app applies encryption just fine.
The reason I want to get WiFi Tether working is because I want to go back to the stock ROM, which I can't use Sprint Hotspot app on.
For some reason, I notice that when I turn off my tether, it still shows as a connection that you can connect to. Those who are connected already, still have some internet (though, it's very slow). I have to restart the phone to get it to go away/save battery. Anyone else have this? Tried a few different tethers (except the built in one in the system) and they had the same result.
to be honest I believe the default one works the best its the most stable one I seen so far and it has infrastructure mode I only been able to test 3g so far but it states 4g is working fine as well. All you have to do is flash it in recovery. The link is for the hotspot hack

Hello everyone,
I have flashed several ROMs already and my unit works perfectly. I did notice when i left the house (wifi), i was no data connection on my phone when using 3G connection only.. all the settings are correct like the APN, i tried several browser too. However when i enable the tethering, my tablet works perfectly
My phone can tethering to my tablet (works)
I use WIFI at home, i can surf the internet (so browser works)
when using the phone for browsing using 3G, no data is coming thru.
I hope someone knows the solution for this. I tried searching but found nothing.
Hi All,
I am still lumbering on with an old HTC Desire running CM 7.07282011-Nightly and have had no real issues up until a couple of days ago.
Whilst in France (not that that make a lot of difference) the Wi-Fi access stopped working and the phone stopped being able to see any Wi-Fi networks. Basically, it switches itself off after around 30 seconds and cannot pick up any networks. In addiiton, the WiFi MAC address shows as unavailable although teathering via a WiFi hotspot works fine. I was switch between teather and normal Wi-Fi when the problem occurred.
If I go into Settings --> Wireless and Networks -->WiFi setting, then switch on the Wi-Fi, I get the "Turning on" message but then a Sorry warning saying "Application Settings (in process com.andriod.settings is not responding" and I can either "force a close" or "wait". If I wait, the Wi-Fi will simply switches itself off after about 30 seconds.
I did read in another post that this might be to do with the Wi-Fi sleep status but I tried all 3 options (from the menu in the Wi-Fi setting page) but that didn't do anything.
The issue appears to be that that phone has lost the Wi-Fi adaptors MAC address (says unavailable). However, I can still use Wireless Tethering and connect to to the phones WiFi hotspot. I think something has go screwy with the Wi-Fi tethering and Wi-Fi access (as I was switching between both when on my travels), but I need some help in trying to fix it.
Any Help Welcome
Chris
I tried updating to cm-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-bravo (whuch was the last release version), but still no joy.
Any help welcome
Well, after trying pretty much everything, I had to run a factory reset on the phone. Finally, my Wi-Fi is working again. Of course I now have the ball aching job of setting the phone up and re-installing all my apps again. Google restore is pretty rubbish
Looks like there must have been a config setting that got screwed somewhere. I did take a backup of the ROM and if anyone knows where this might be resolved, I wouldn't mind restoring.
