ok i have a MAJOR problem. im kind of a noob at this stuff so im still learning. i was messing in my system files trying different phone.apk. i think i may have deleted something essential. when i turn my phone on it doesnt get past the boot animation. my phone was rooted with unrevoked 3. but everytime i try to install a new rom using clock work recovery, it gets to the part where it "opens update pakage" and just stops and goes back to the first menu screen of clockwork. i dont have a nandroid backup either so i cant even restore.
Did you wipe everything before flashing?
Which rom did you try flashing?
yes i wiped everything. i tried multiple roms like cm 6, and stock. none worked. also. everytime i try to load up the pc36img.zip nothing happens it says "no image or wrong image"
You should try using Amon_RA instead. Just flash it using ROM Manager. Good Luck.
is it possible for me to change to amon? im not able to get past my boot screen on my phone, so if it requires me to turn my phone completely to use it, then i cant. i dont really know much about amon.
Search for the Amon_RA thread. If you downgraded your HBOOT, you can flash from Fastboot. If not, you can try an RUU.

. I'm using ROM Manager with ClockworkMod, and every attempt leads to the screen flashing code for a few moments, and going right into the ClockworkMod Recovery main menu. it wont let me flash ANYTHING period. I have HBOOT-0.97. i dont know what can be the problem. and Amon RA is too complicated for me to understand right now cuz im still a noob. :-(
I'm new to android, coming from the htc diamond/windows mobile.
I'm super interested in getting the bloatware off of my evo, so I want to root and flash a new rom.
I decided to try out unrevoked method of root, because im new to the android platform and it seems super easy.
I ran the program. It does a fair amount of work, but after the first reboot (which doesn't reboot to bootloader) it says it's pushing root, then says that communications were interrupted unexpectedly, try again.
I have tried again and again...have found that many people don't like the unrevoked/clockwork method anyway, and have decided to go manual.
Now, in bootloader, I can see that I have s-off, but since I decided to use a one-click method, I don't really know what else to do. I guess I have security turned off, but do I have root?

I've read of a lot of people having that issue with Unrevoked, but strangely enough, I've used it many many times, and have never had an issue. Just gotta make sure there are no programs on your computer that can 'talk' to the phone through USB while its happening (htc sync, dropbox, pdanet, music syncing, etc) and have the correct hboot drivers installed.
Anyways, to answer your question, if you are already showing S off, then I'd say you just need to flash a recovery. What happens when you select recovery from the bootloader at this point in time? Do you just get the red triangle? What I would do is put this PC36IMG on your sd card ( its Amon Ra Recovery, V2.3, which better than clockwork in my opinion) Make sure it's on the main directory of your card, and that its named exactly PC36IMG. Boot into the bootloader, and it should then scan and find the PC36IMG and ask you to update. Hit volume up to say yes, and let it flash. That will flash the recovery. Once that finished, try going to recovery and see if everything went smoothly. If so, you should be good to start flashing roms, kernels, removing bloat etc.
If you do still want to do it the manual way, then before doing so, I suggest undoing what Unrevoked did before starting, getting back to stock. To do that, flash the Unrevoked S on tool, to turn S back to on. Then run a PC36IMG of a factory ROM or run an RUU. That will put you completely back to stock, so you can start fresh with whatever method you want to try. Good luck.

EDIT: also added the Unrevoked S On tool, in case you want to get back to stock, however, you do need a custom recovery installed in order to flash that.
Interesting.
Before going to the easier one-click method from unrEVOked, I did use the pc36img on the sd card. I was in bootloader, I saw it checking the sd card, I saw the blue status bar on the right, but was never asked if I wanted to update. rather, it said that my 'main recovery was newer' ...or something
i just tried the file pc3... file that you gave me and i got the update!
ok so: i have s-off, and i flashed the recovery (that's what I just did, right?)
next, i'm going to go into bootloader and select recovery? that is to make sure that everything went smoothly?

Exactly. That is correct. Let me know what happens when you select recovery now. It should take you to Amon Ra's recovery screen, which is all black with green lettering. If that's the case, then you are rooted, S-off, with custom recovery installed. At that point, I'd boot into the ROM, and make sure everything is operating as normal. If it is, i would go back to the bootloader, select recovery again, and choose backup/restore, to create a nandroid backup (backs up the entire system), so you have a good and working nandroid backup from the point you are currently at right now, which is stock rom, rooted with recovery.
yes i did it and I got the good recovery screen. at the bottom it said amon ra custom recovery (or something like that).
I'll get my backup next!!
Thanks bro.
Last question. RUU is rom update utility just like winmo right? i will just have to run the utility in order to flash a new rom?

Don't run the RUU. RUU will restore you back to stock UNrooted. You are good to go on installing and flashing new Roms just as you are, just boot into recovery and do what you need to in there.

Sweet, glad it worked for you. As the other guy said, don't run the RUU. I'm not familiar with WinMo, but with Android, you definitely ONLY run RUU if you want to get back to stock unrooted, to bring in for service or something. That will make your phone look like the day you took it out of the box. To flash ROMS on an Evo, you do it all from that custom recovery. You wipe everything from within recovery (data, davlik cache, cache), then select "flash zip from sd card", find your ROM in there (you'd have put it on the sd card ) then choose it and let it flash. Thats it. Happy flashing!
ahhh so i don't even have to unzip the roms anymore....
p.s. performed a successful nandroid backup

Precisely. No unzipping the roms at all. You basically just download it, don't unzip/extract it or anything. Drop the (zipped) zip on the main directory of your sd card, boot to recovery, select flash zip, find rom, and thats it. Again, I'm not familiar with winmo at all, so I'm not sure on what the wiping procedures were with that. However, a good rule of thumb here is any time you are going to change a ROM, it is highly recommended to do a complete wipe (wipe data/factory reset, davlik cache, and cache). I also flash calkulins format all.zip, which also wipes boot and system. A fresh and clean wipe gives the new ROM you're about to try the best chance to run the best it can. When you flash anything else at all, such as a kernel, theme, modification etc, you just need to wipe davlik cache and cache. Only a full wipe on ROM changes. I'll attatch calkulin's format all.zip. It's a zip file taht you flash in recovery, and it then wipes everything (except your sd card, it won't touch that)
I know I've seen other people with this problem, but I don't think I've seen a fix but I'm hoping I'm wrong.
Installed CM7 RC2 and everything works great for a month. Some random reboots but no big deal. Today I get a reboot but instead of reloading it hangs on the CM7 boot logo. I go into clockwork recovery, do a full wipe, and reboot. From then on, all I can do is loop in the white HTC screen. No ROM, no Recovery.
I've tried to flash Amon Ra recovery and a stock RUU via at PCImag file. No love. Any ideas?

Put in root of sdcard, boot into bootloader, update, let it boot or boot into recovery.

He uploaded a recovery image in a PC36IMG, so it NEEDS to be flashed in the bootloader.
Ive had the same problem for two days now and have tried everything in the book it seems. Using fastboot or manually from the bootloader, every pc36img.zip fails with an error at (8) partition update failed! or remote : 51 partition update fail. I can get the newest ruu to get me stuck at the four triangle error and then I have to flash PC36IMG_AmonRA-v2.3-hausmod_revA.zip just to get back to the htc boot screen loop (which at least lets me get back to bootloader to start the vicious cycle again) . ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Heck, even any way to make it presentable at a sprint store would even work at this point (since it says s-off I'm guessing someone in the line of repair will realize its been rooted.
p.s. I have never had any problem with my phone and have flashed just about every rom out there and I always do a full wipe and usually a format_all too. This happened about two hours after I flashed Kings UNleashed Ultra Blakk R3 ( it just did a reboot on its own and its been in this mess ever since)

Once you've gotten back into recovery, specifically, amon RA 2.3, use the MS-USB menu and copy the contents of your SD card onto an external disk drive. Afterwards, use amon RA to partition and reformat your card. When you're done, copy only the Rom and amon RA (PC36IMG) file to your SD card. Shut down your device. Now while pressing the down volume key, press the power button to enter the hboot screen and pay attention to see whether or not you still have S-OFF. If you do not, you need to re-root. If you do, great. Reflash amon RA and afterwards, reboot into recovery and flash the rom.

Think we have different problems. Every time I try to flash something new it completes fine, but it still boot loops. Hell, yours might be fixable.
I've tried everything now with no luck. Everything updates and completes but has absolutely no effect on the boot looping. This is really insane and my advice to anyone would be to stop using CM7 immediately as it seems to be confined to that ROM.
If anyone else has had this exact problem please post, I want to get a tally of how many people are affected and try to find a commonality.
Bootlooping is caused by incorrectly flashing, or flashing something that the phone "doesn't like," whether it be a kernel, a theme, ect.

But my phone ran for a month without any problems except for some random reboots which seem to be common with this phone in general. I didn't add software or flash anything before this happened, it just happened. That seems to be the experience most people are having, the only thing in common is that they were running CM7 or had been running it recently and tried to flash to a different rom.
What software problem wouldn't be corrected by a successfully completed reflash with a stock RUU? That's the major question.
Hmm, that is awkward; at that point, I would just take it in if you're still getting random reboots. Been on CM7 for the longest and no random reboots on my end.

EXACTLY! and thus the reason I wanted the OP to follow the directions I gave. Being that he or she would have had a completely fresh recovery, a freshly partitioned & formatted SD card and only the rom on the card to flash, barring a mechanical issue, the only possible explanation would be a corrupted rom zip file or a corrupted nandroid backup if that is what was being used. Corruption happens. The OP should re-download a fresh copy of the rom, re-wipe and re-flash, at least in my opinion....

Try flashing amon_ra 2.3....place on sdcard, go into the bootloader, update, reboot, then try the bootloader. But before you do, select clear storage, which will do a factory reset, to see if that helps.

Already tried it, no dice. Goes through fine but then keeps bootlooping. On a side note, is there a way to get S-On through the bootloader since I can't access recovery?
You would have to download the RUU exe and then run the phone in fastboot while connected to the pc.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear . Days of reading every post in any thread I can find has left me running on no sleep. The huge problem is that no matter what recovery rom is flashed it wont let me boot into RECOVERY MODE. It flashes fine whether it is from the sd or through cmd using fastboot (Ive tried almost every version including the newest of both Amen RA and Clockwork). This gets me stuck in the white HTC screen boot loop. If I flash a RUU it will at least hang with a partition error and get stuck in the four triangle error, which will at least let you charge the battery so I can start all over again. Is there maybe a way to wipe the partition or reformat in fastboot as that is really the only thing working (regular adb wont detect). It seems a ton of people have been popping up with this same problem out of the blue the last few days.
Hey guys,
So here's what happened and is happening:
1. I was running a custom ROM (Baked Snack 1.7) on Froyo (2.2). The phone was working fine but I wanted to try Gingerbread 2.3.3 out because I heard it had great battery life.
2. My phone would not update to 2.3.3 from Baked Snack. I thought it might have something to do with it being rooted. I used this method to unroot...and I think I only got through the first part:
http://www.thedroiddemos.com/2010/09/10/how-to-unroot-the-evo-in-2-steps/
I installed the S-On tool like he said to. Then I moved the "new updated version" of PC36IMG (I had the old version on my card already). He said something about the "S-Off" appearing on his phone but not the viewer's...well, mine says S-Off.
So fast forwarding, I got Sprint to push me the update for 2.3.3. It downloaded it, but then a voicemail error came up saying I had 2 voicemails. Then when I called voicemail, it said I had no messages. Sprint said a Sprint store would have to physically go into the phone to erase the error.
I also got a second update message that said there were minor enhancements to Gingerbread. I tried downloading them but the installation failed. Sprint told me to ignore the update, that there had been issues with Gingerbread (and the update) and that they were working on getting these resolved.
Somehow I managed to clear the phone and get back to 2.1. Here's what my system says when I look at the Phone Information:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
When I boot into the main bootloader/Recovery menu (Phone Off + Power Button + Volume Down), here's what it says:
Supersonic EVT2-2 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.76.2000 (PC3610000)
If I click down to Recovery from this menu and press "Power" to enter it, NOW I get a picture of an EVO with a Red Triangle/Exclamation Point. This means I have to take my battery out and restart the phone.
Also, the OTA SimpleRoot procedure doesn't seem to work on the phone either. When I originally set it back, the procedure worked. Now it just goes through the motions on the computer but nothing happens with the phone (rebooting, skating Androids, etc.)
All I want to do is basically put it back 2.2 and re-run Baked Snack 1.7 which was giving me NO issues.
If someone could help me with this issue, I would be very grateful.
Well you have a simple fix. The error you got with the triangle and red ! is you booting into recovery, but no recovery is loaded [stock recovery]. Head over to the development section, and download the recovery of your choice. Personally I recommend in order: twrp [team win recovery project] , amon ra 2.3, cwm 3.0+. After you have your recovery installed, boot back into recovery and flash your baked snack rom. Also, don't manually take an OTA of 2.3.3 as it can't be rooted. if you want to try a gingerbread rom, simply download CM7, evervolv, deck's, ect rom and flash it like any other rom. Just backup your previous rom before flashing so you can go back.

Basically amon ra, but better. it has some additional options, such as the option to automatically reboot after a successful flash [good for doing a single flash, but if you're doing multiple, checked it at the last flash.] You have the option to compress backups to save space, though it takes a little bit longer, and they have some built in skins you can change at will. And MOAR.
I tried rooting using this method:
http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-root-instructions
I put the PC36IMG on the root of my SD card and let the phone update in bootloader. It seemed to work fine, updated, rebooted the phone, etc.
Then I downloaded ROM Manager so I could let Clockwork install and then install Amon Ra....when ROM Manager tried installing Clockwork, it gave me the following message: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
It also will not let me flash an alternate recovery. I have the file "recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img" on the root of my SD card right now.
What does this mean? Does this mean I'm not rooted? Or some other issue? I remember eons ago when I tried using this program I got the same message but I don't remember how I got around it. (obviously I did though)
Is there a different way I should install it?

That's a bit outdated; use unrevoked. I've already done the linking for you.
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install <- Download and install the modified hboot drivers, follow the instructions.
2. On your phone, enable usb debugging from the applications > development, in settings
3. Connect your phone to your pc via usb cable, leave it on the home screen, no apps should be running; restart the phone just to be sure.
4. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install <- download and run unrevoked
It'll take 3-5 minutes and reboot about 2 times, don't touch in the process, it'll say done at the end. Also, this will only work if on 2.2 still. if on 2.3.3, you're outta luck.
Okay, forget Rom Manager, forget "rooting" your phone - at least according to the normal use of the word.
Delete any PC36IMG files you may have on your SD card, then download this one of Amon Ra 2.3: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
Don't rename it, don't extract it... just put it on the root of your SD card. Then download whatever rom you want to use. Put it on the root of your SD card or in a folder that you'll remember. Amon Ra (and possibly other recoveries) can flash zips that are inside of folders. Just be sure that you know where it is because you'll need to navigate to it in recovery.
Then boot into the bootloader and let it flash the way you've done with other PC36IMG files. When it asks you to reboot just decline and then select recovery. I would make a backup just in case, then flash your rom.

Thank you guys, I will try these methods when I get back from work tonight. I really really appreciate it, I was about having a meltdown without my phone (the way I want it).
I'll report back either way. (and yes, I'm still on 2.1-update1)

OK, I forgot to mention this earlier...last time I was stuck in the Boot Sequence where it kept looping the Sprint and 4G logo....now that I'm rooted using plainjane's method (thank you) I'm stuck with the same thing.
I flashed the recovery, then flashed the Baked Snack ROM....now I'm in the Baked Snack bootload section....and it just keeps looping.
Is this an issue with my system that can be resolved?
EDIT: So weird. I went back into Recovery and wiped everything and set the phone back to original condition...and voila, Baked Snack comes up as the ROM! So now it appears it's for the most part back to normal and back to where I wanted it....thank you guys again.
Now can anyone point me in the direction of the latest radios, etc. that I can download and flash?
And why would it be giving me those looping problems, and then go back to normal when I cleared/wiped everything?
I mean, I'm happy this happened but I don't want the same things happening if I decide to flash another ROM at some point.
I purchased my first Android phone used. It is an Sprint HTC EVO 4G. The phone was already rooted. I tried to unroot so I could apply new HTC software update. New at this and screwed the whole phone up. There is nothing left on the sd card. I somehow wiped everything from the phone as well apparently. The phone goes straight to bootloader everytime I power on. I can go into recovery and all that, but there is nothing there to flash or anything. Is it permanently ruined?
Your phone is not ruined, if you can get into recovery your good to go.
1. download new rom you want to try
2. push to sd card via usb-ms toggle option in recovery
3. wipe all on phone (cache, dalvik, data, etc.) in recovery
4. Flash zip of new rom in recovery
5. reboot phone, viola!
6. go back into revovery, goto backup option and do a nandroid
Happy flashing!!!
remember: if phone is rooted do not apply update through carrier. All update musts come thru xda

Correct, but only if your bootloader still reads S-OFF at the top. If so, you are good. If not, we need more information from your bootloader screen, such as your Hboot number and radio.
Where can I get a rom to download? Do I just place it on my sd card? I found a rom zip file downloaded it and flashed it from sd card. Everytime I still get a message saying install aborted.

Choose a different rom. What recovery do you have? You may need Amon Ra to flash certain zips. The stock rooted rom should be compatible with all recoveries. If you're trying to flash that, then redownload it and try again.
If you want to switch to Amon Ra, download the PC36IMG here and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into the bootloader and the phone will find the file and ask you to update - select yes. When it finishes, select no when it asks you to reboot and select recovery. This is assuming that you're using ClockworkMod since you had installation issues, but there's no reason to flash it if you're already using it. If you're already using it and you flash it, it won't hurt anything.
This is assuming that you have s-off. If you have s-on but still have a recovery, you may be able to flash some things in recovery but you won't be able to flash a recovery through hboot. If you're s-on with recovery, you can either flash Unrevoked Forever through recovery (if your hboot/radio are compatible) or you can finish the unrooting process and reroot if you want to do so.

I have tried flashing PC36IMG prior and it says it applies the update, but then I'm right back where I started on next reboot. When I clicked your HERE link above it goes to a blank page. I currently show S-OFF in the bootloader.
Ok, so when you get to boot loader, click on recovery and which recovery do you have?
If I were you, I would go to the Dev section, look for the stock/rooted ROM and put that on your SD Card. Hopefully you have Amon Ra for your recovery.
Go to wipe, and wipe every option there is there, except SD Card: and Battery Stats, if you're not fully charged, then flash the ROM. Once it's booted, set up your Google account, etc, then go back to recovery and make a nandroid. I always save everything except Cache.
NOW, you'll have a good base to go from
i have the same prob.my buddy gave me evo to fix.sd card got wiped.i have the green recovery,i need a stock rom.
