[Q] Proximity sensor calibration - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having an issue with my proximity sensor and believe it may be some sort of calibration issue. It works (ie when I am in calls, if I cover it with my finger, it shuts off the screen) but the sensitivity has become very poor. I've had the phone since the day it was released and the proximity sensor had no trouble reflecting off my head and keeping the screen off during calls. Over the last few months I've noticed I started hitting buttons with my ear during calls because the screen is not shutting down. It seems like the sensitivity has decreased by some fixed amount in the last few months. It is very annoying because I keep accidentally hanging up on people or hitting the hold call button while I am talking.
The only two things I thought it could be would be either the sensor needs to be calibrated or possibly the sensor is going bad. I'm running the cyanogen 7 nightlies but have also tried reverting to some of the more stable RCs and still had the issue. I will try going back to a t-mobile rom tonight to see if that helps.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know how to re-calibrate the sensor?

I gave it a shot, but I didn't see anything for calibrating the proxy sensor in that app.
I did however do a test using the camera on my transformer and compared the intensity of the proxy sensor LED to that on other phones. It appears as if mine is very dim and barely blinks. I think the infrared LED is burning out or the circuit that supplies it is not putting out the correct power.
Has anyone ever tried replacing a bad proxy LED before?

try sucking over the surface with a vaccum...i know it sounds crazy but its fixed alot of proxy sensors

That, or use one of those compressed-air cans for cleaning stuff and blow it into the speaker hole towards the proximity sensor (to the left of the speaker hole.) The proximity sensor seems very sensitive to dust particles.

You haven't installed or changed screen protectors recently, by any chance? Those have been known to mess up the sensor. Also, make sure the protector or glass is nice and clean in the area of the sensor.

Thanks for all the great advice! I'm going to give the vacuum and air can a shot.
Oh and to answer redpoint, I haven't installed any screen protectors on this phone ever, but thanks for the advice.

My GF's Vision behaves the same...
Still looking for a calibration tool, i found only one, but that don't work.
Also tried to "clean" the sensor
I think we have to return it to htc...

Same problem with my DZ since I put Virtuous G Lite on it. Did you guys find a solution for your proximity sensor ?
Cleaning or software ?

Desire's screen turns off on dialing/call

Good day,
It seems this issue has been discussed widely and regularly but I couldn't find a solution that works and I hope you can assist.
My -rooted/Redux- Desire's screen goes off when calls are made regardless of whether it is close to face or not, in addition it doesn't come back on until the call is ended -or battery is replaced- and obviously this can only be done by the other party as my screen stays blank and unresponsive..
Any thought or help would be greatly appreciated..
Regards.
Do you use any kind of sticker or a case which is near to the sensor ?
I had similar experiance with a sticker before. for 6 months it didn't cause any problem but after 6 months it caused some with problems with light and proximity sensor.

Ant,
Thanks but this is my third ROM, didn't help, any other thoughts?

Maybe the proximity sensor is knackered. Could be your phone that needs repairing. On the other hand you should be able to turn the sensor off if its getting too annoying by going into settings calls or display can't remember precisely buy there should be an option there to turn it off. Hope it helps.

There might actually be a dust particle under your digitizer, which caused the proximity sensor to malfunction
That's what my Desire has for a few months now.. Drived me crazy, until I started using CM7 which allows me to switch the screen on by pressing the power button during calls. But sometimes it still doesn't respond. Plugging in a powered USB cable is another solution then.
Anyhow, check if your proximity sensor is working by using Z-DeviceTest for example. If the sensor is indeed not working properly, there might be some dust on the sensor. Take off your backplate and blow around the power button area. Worked on my phone the first few times it occurred..
Hope this helps!

[Q] Proximity Sensor dead. Suggestions to simulate its working?

Alright. My proximity sensor has been dead for a while now. (And yes, it indeed is dead. I've used Proximity Sensor Recallibrator and different apps for testing it.)
It's not a very big issue to use the phone without a working Proximity Sensor. But it gets annoying while attending calls. With a functional sensor, the phone locks itself when you place the phone next to your ear. However, as expected mine doesn't. I've made it a habit to manually lock the screen by pressing the power button before making a call or after receiving a call. However, there are times when I forget in the rush and it leads to very annoying things, the notification drawer slides down and apparently 'my ear' presses and activates wifi, bluetooth and almost everything on the power widget in the notification drawer.
Its really annoying.
I know there's no real way of actually simulating a proximity sensor. So I just need suggestions from you guys as to how to tackle this problem. Any suggestions with creative ideas or workarounds would be welcome.
When i had an htc hd2 i had the same proble and i was using one out of two apps the problem is i can't fully remember the names, one was ditching the proximity sensor and using the light sensor for proximity and the other one was suposed to make the proximity sensor much snappier using partial info from light sensor. Search the play store for "proximity".
P.S. did you dismantle the phone to see if you have dust behind the speaker gril? I had the same problem with my handset , i could have swore that my sensor was dead but after i cleaned it it worked. Hoped i helped

Light sensor data for proximity checks. Its an innovative idea... although wouldn't that make my phone lock itself when the lights are turned off?
Also, the dust thing might be a problem, I'll give it a try to see if it helps. Thanks.

1 No that app activates only in call, it bypasses the the sensor data from proximity to light while in call then reverts back after call ends the only downside is that it is not as snappy but it is better than nothing
2 Dismantle your back casing and you will find the motherload of dust in speaker grill, if you didn't check that out first then i'm 99% sure this is your problem: filth in speaker grill and on proxy and light sensors you will find a carpet of dust
Caution!!!!
-watch a dismantling video before you start
-if you want to use compressed air to clean the speaker funnel don't exceed 2 bar max and blow at a distance of 15-25 cm not closer
For further support i will help you over forum but check google or xda for a tutorial

Can you recall the name of the apps? A bit more help than "proximity" would do.. there are a ton load of crappy apps out there with proximity in their names
And thanks for the suggestion I was indeed watching a dismantling video just now.

These were the apps that I found. The first one does not work. (I tried it out of desperation even though it stated it was only for HTC Hero ). I read the description of the second one you mentioned and it does not state any such feature about using the light sensor. The closest thing that app would do is to turn the screen off by shaking.
Anyway, you've given me the idea about using the light sensor data only when there is a phone call to lock the screen. I'll try to use Tasker to see if I can make a setting for that scenario. Otherwise I'll just go ahead and make the app.
As for the dismantling, I've seen the video and to get to the grill all I have to do is to remove the gps cover, remove the agency sticker, unscrew 5 screws of the main body cover and remove the cover... right? But unfortunately I don't have the screwdrivers right now, I'll get them first tomorrow and then definitely clean the grill.

If you have the phone for a long time and you never cleaned it , that might be your problem.
Btw didn't you notice that the phone would turn off harder and sometimes sporadickly while in call before it stoped working?

Actually.. I don't recall when it actually stopped working. So no, I have no recollection of such happenings. But I do believe you that it might be a possible cause because of the way I handle the phone, dust is a very real possibility.
Ok my friend i will stay tuned on the topic. i will go to bed now but i will be here tomorow to help and assist with whatever i can.
Good luck m8!
Tell me if you mannaged to fix anything.
First of all try to clean the sensor
I've got a simple one... Call a friend and place your hand over the sensor. If the screens turns off its working lol

[Q] Proximity sensor not working

Hello
The proximity sensor doesn't seem to work on my note II anymore. Whenever i make a phone call the screen just goes black. Also direct call and quick glance won't work. Tried to do the tutorials but nothing.
Anyone else had this problem? Do you guys think it is a hardware fault or software wise? I have tried using two different custom roms and unrooted stock rom.
Sorry for the late reply, but did you ever find a solution for this? Because I just started experiencing the same problem with my phone, and I want to know if I need to try and get it exchanged. Thanks a lot.
Anyone can help ? My proximity sensor not working too ....
Using N7105 Singapore Singtel.
Did not find a solution. A guy told me to get it repaired but still havent't done it.
there is no solution for this sadly
Proximity sensor
Guys i also have the same problem....was searching for solution for quite a long time.
The problem seems to be either the sensor is damaged due to fall or there is dust on the sensor.
The solution which i got are:
1 Send to samsung gallery for sensor replacement (Safest Option and only if the sensor is broken)
2 Take a compressed air can and try blowing through the earpiece grill. (Many have got the sensor back to working since the dust blows off)
I am personally going to try the compressed air solution since my phone didn't fall. So assuming sensor is not working due to dust inside.

Knock On Not working properly

Hi, everyone. So I have an LG G4 for more than a year now and I am very pleased with its performance. I did have an issue with sometimes the audio is stuck after a call but I think it more has to do with bad reception as I noticed so its rare this days. However, lately something happened with the knock on feature which I cannot figure out at all. Sometimes it just doesn't work. I tap and nothing happens. The power on button is working perfectly but the knock on is unresponsive. I fiddled with the proximity sensor but it's not it. Sometimes it just stops working for 5-6 times and then it works and the again it doesn't. There is no pattern. When it's powering on the feature works with no hiccups but after that it's like the cpu forgets to monitor the process. I don't know. I have tried calibration and it works with no problem for a few minutes and then it goes back again to this stutter. Does anyone have any ideas about this? I am thinking factory reset but the hassle would be pointless if the problem persists and I am in no mood to install all those apps I have from the beginning for no reason. Any hep will be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I am experiencing the same issue but mine Knock on is a bit delaying.. for an example, I double tap on the screen and it gives response in 3-4 mins or not... I am suspecting from screen protector which has been mounted for almost a year, it could be corrupted(scratch) Give a try on removing the screen protector(if you have any)
It's a hardware problem. Many threads online about it

Is your case or temp glass protect over prox sensor. That can affect it bad. Also scratches on glass over prox sensor. If not. Then more than likely hardware related.
No the screen protector does not cover the prox sensor. It's cut out as it should be. I am starting to think it's a hardware problem. The thing is why now?!

No. I haven't touched it at all yet. I am pretty satisfied with the performance so I left it alone. The only thing worth mentioning is that I overheated taking a lot of pictures during an event. Maybe this did a number on it!
I have been discussing the issue with a technican today. It is a hardware issue, you cannot fix it. Apparently, the proximity sensor dies after ~2 years - at least somewhat. Why somewhat?
Check this out: You can check the status of your sensor using MINIOS, type *#546368#*815# (n.b. - swap 815 for your model number).
Now click device test - MT - ok - Individual Item - Sensor test - WAIT!
The proximity sensor will run a test and likely come up with a figure between 60~90. The actual value should be 220+.
Meaning: Your phone thinks it´s ~6-9 cm away from your face, that is not enough to trigger knock-on but it´s far enough to be triggered using the backside button.
My knock on doesn't work, but knock off does. Not a major issue, just annoying!

[COS13]Proximity sensor not working

i have a oneplus 8 pro that was running on OOS 11 like magic
then update it to COS 12 and the proximity sensor stopped working
yesterday COS 13 came and i thought it would fix the problem but no, the problem still there.
any fix for the proximity sensor one COS 13 please.
Mine is also not working at all since oos12. Im completely stock on oos13 now.
Sensor doesnt react at all.
Hi,
mine too stopped working a few days ago.
Im on OOS13 (eu) but it worked the hole time, suddently it stopped working, without any changes to the system.
I did a proximity sensor test (dialpad : #*899# ) and it does not react at all.
PS : Can anyone tell me where the sensor is located on the phone i cant find it.
riding the same boat
I tried to reset it with "Proximity Sensor Reset" app, but it didnt work so I think its a hardware problem...
Fortunately the hardware piece costs about 5-10 bucks, unfortunately phones today are so glued that I dont wanna hassle to open it just because of the little sensor..
Edit: I found out where the sensor is located somewhere in the right corner,
yesterday I coincidentally noticed that it sometime works when the top right corner comes in contact with my pants or any other fabric.
When I try it with my hands or head it doesn't react at all...

I was going to tell you that, I accidently discovered that proximity sensor is kind of working when in contact with my hoodie that is covering my ears.
but when phone is directly touching the skin it wont work.
Same here. I bought a used one in very good condition and figured out that the phone does not switch off the screen during calls. I can run the diagnostics and see that the sensor works properly when I use some fabric on it but has absolutely no effect when using the hand or the ear.
I wonder how that can be and if it's really an issue with the OS version or a hardware issue.
Also same here. Proximity sensor problems after oos13 update. Has anyone tried custom roms if problem are still occuring on those too?
