[Q] HTC Sense on my G2 ver. 2.3.4 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a T-Mobile G2 ver. 2.3.4. How easy is it and what are the steps to install HTC Sense on my phone? Are there bugs or glitches? Please let me know. Thank you very much!

You just need to find and flash a Sense based ROM via CWM. Virtuous ROMs work very well. I switch between CM7 and Unity on a regular basis and both are stable enough for day to day use.
I assume you have already set the phone up for flashing different ROMs?

Flashing different ROMs? How is it done? I haven't done anything to it except updating it to 2.3.4 using XDA's method. T-Mobile's OTA was taking a long time so I researched and found XDA. Thanks XDA!

It sounds like you have a lot of reading ahead of you.
Flashing ROMs is essentially installing new firmware on the device via a program called ClockWork.
I recommend starting off by reading through guides and information on the link below. The devices typically has safeguards against allowing you to just flash new ROMs, so a process is involved to unlock the phone and allow you to do it.
Once you become familiar with what it is, then learn how to do it, and what it does. I followed the gfree method on XDA wiki and had no issues, but if I recall, being on 2.3.4 you cannot follow the same method and must downgrade first.
Read, read, read. Then read some more. Search is very helpful.

I Think you need to switch to the Desire Z hoot in order to handle the sense rom

You do, but I didn't want to throw that out there if he didn't even know what ROMs were. He'll pick it up in his research.

The Desire Z HBoot is required for Unity and Doubleshot, but not for Virtuous Sense v2.0.0, I believe.

if you are rooted, it should be somewhat simple. are you rooted?

Thanks for all the info and help guys but I'll stick to what I have for now. I read somewhere that there's still some glitches on the install like landscape is not working. And I'll do more research first so I won't brick my phone. Again, thanks guys! Peace!

Landscape rosie (homescreen) doesn't work for Unity. Its not an install glitch or bug, per se. The ROM based on HTC Sensation ROM, which does not have a keyboard, and therefore does not have landscape. Landscape rosie simply does not exist on that ROM, and the dev was fully aware that would be the case, all along. There is no Sense 3.0 with landscape rosie until HTC makes one.
Doubleshot has landscape rosie. Virtuous Sense is based on the official ROM for the Desire Z, so I assume landscape rosie works on that, as well.
There are also other Sense ROMs besides the Virtuous ones, like Insert Coin. But I don't know a whole lot about them.

Searching the Virtuous Sense thread, somebody says that the DZ HBoot is not needed. But I can't personally confirm.

Is you are getting virtuous sense then landscape does work but if you get virtuous unity, landscape does not work

[Q] g2 good idea to root now - or wait?

i am basically looking to root my tmobile g2 just to put sense on it...
but it has already been confirmed that there will be a ginger bread update from htc/tmobile in the coming months..
also sense 3.0 from what i can tell has been floating around on some roms - but will the g2 ever be able to run the new sense without having the dual core? also seems like the htc sensation rom has different resolution from the g2.
so do i root and put sense on my g2 now - or wait

The upcoming GB update won't give you Sense, it'll still be a "with Google" build; if you want Sense, the only way to get it on the G2 is to root the device and install a Sense based ROM.

Yeah but the desirez will get gingerbread with sense - shouldnt i wait to get this type of rom on the g2 since it would be an official/more stock rom
Sorry i am new to this

I would install a sense rom now if you want it then install the update when it gets released. As for 3.0 yes it will run on the g2. Some people are working on changing resolutions right now.

Awesome
How do I go about doing this the right way with having the option to restore/backup?
Also do any of the sense roms work with wifi calling?

If you're unfamiliar with things, the easiest way is with ROM Manager. Once rooted (use the method in the wiki as it's the most up to date) download ROM Manager from the Market. From ROM Manager flash ClockworkMod Recovery. After that, backup your current ROM (name it "Stock", or something that makes sense to you), download the Virtuous ROM (it's the most stable Sense ROM for the G2, from what I've found) and follow the prompts.
Since you're switching between incompatible ROMs, non-Sense/Sense, you will have to do a full wipe. Your contacts and apps will sync (if you have that currently set) but your data won't. To remedy this, before flashing download Titanium Backup and backup all your user apps, you can then use Titanium to push back your apps and data (don't opt to push back your system data as all hell will break lose).

If you want Sense, then you have to root regardless, so why wait to root?
The test version of the Vision/DesireZ ROM with Gingerbread and Sense 3.0 has been leaked, and the SenseGinger custom ROM is based on that. So its not a port. There are still a few fairly minor bugs, but it seems pretty stable if you want to try it out. But no WiFi calling.

mmm no wifi calling might be a deal breaker for me - i loose signal where i work and rely on the wifi signal to receive and make calls...
is there no wifi calling on the sense rom because its based off the desire z (Uk)?
Not sure the reason for WiFi calling not working. It steps on the toes of lots of carriers, so I can see it being left out of the generic HTC ROM, which the leaked test ROM is (the WWE version, or worldwide english). This version of SenseGinger is really new (April 13), so the developers may get it working. Not sure what their intent is, so you might read thru the SenseGinger thread and see if its discussed.
For instance, on Virtuous, WiFi calling only works on T-Mobile by design of the developers. So I'm thinking this feature is a T-Mob exclusive?

You shouldn't wait to root your device base on the upcoming update since probably, they'll patch it somehow so currents rooting methods won't work, like the update on the DesireZ that people have to downgrade in order to root. And yes there are Sense rom that works with wifi callings. Go for it!

There are requirements every rom needs which are stated in the main post. If you download cm7 version you need cm7 hboot. Then you must decide if you want something built around newest official release or you want a port, a 2.1+3.0 hybrid etc.
But as you wrote in such fashion your first post, it seems you have some reading to do nevertheless as it seems you mix a rom and hboot. Sorry if I'm wrong.

Try oxygen 2.2.1 which is fast, stable, fully functional, works with stock hboot and is running gb 2.3.5 - its what I'm using right now. Its not sense but its a great rom.
You wont find it on xda as the dev has started his own forum - search google for oxygen forum

Guys, cool it, there's no need to be hostile. XDA is all about helping others, and the Search function, as we all know, is far from perfect. It's not the most efficient way to get to the bottom of what msdl28712 was asking--which is user's feedback of different ROMs. Actually, this is the most efficient way of getting that info: by posting and letting users answer, then let the post sink into oblivion a few days afterwards. So you don't have to PMS over something so trivial.
As to which ROMs are fast, I find that Oxygen and InsertCoin are the fastest GingerBread ROMs. Oxygen is AOSP, built with minimal hacks, while InsertCoin has Sense 2.1 from HTC. They're both lean, as can be seen from the less than 60Mb-sized zip files (less half the size of other ROMs like LeeDroid or Stock ROoted GB). MIUI is pretty slim too, only 85Mb zipped, although that's because the English language pack is itself 25Mb. If you're Chinese, then MIUI is only 60Mb zipped, which makes it a lean, sexy ROM like Oxygen. Those 3 recommended ROMs I've used myself, and have had not one single bootloop (I always do full wipe before flashing, even if I'm flashing a newer version of the same ROM). I think those 3 are the cream of the crop.
I haven't tried your others yet, but that's because I've been so happy with InsertCoin.
I haven't had any issues at all and is nice and smooth. Also the tutorials on the Devs own site are really useful.

[Q] How to get Sense 3.0 on Htc Desire hd.Help please!

Hy all.
I just got a Htc desire hd yesterday with stock android 2.3.3 and i dont know a thing about rooting and hacking android(i had an iPhone 3gs before). So i would like to know how can i get the Sense 3.0 (like the one from htc sensations) on my htc? please someone explain this in a simple way,for dummies like me.
Please if someone want to help me.
Thanks.
Search this forum.. There are numerous guides on how to Root your DHD..
hy thanks
but i need to know the steps .... i dont know anything about this kind of stuff...
Hi,
welcome to XDA! You're generally better off asking questions on the Desire HD Q&A thread.
A stock (as in made by HTC) Sense 3.0 rom isn't available yet (if at all) but there are a few custom roms that dedicated teams have made.
Here's what I did to get 3.0 on my DHD - please note that all these steps may not be necessary but they're just what I did. Also I'm pretty sure they'll void your warranty as I think you'll need to root your phone to get a custom rom on there.
Firstly, read up on this stuff as ignorance = bricked device!
I started by looking at the sticky'd threads over on the Desire HD Development forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=765
specifically M_T_M's roll up thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936214
which should contain all the info you'll need to back up, downgrade, root, s-off/eng s-off, flash clockwork recovery, wipe and install a sense 3.0 ROM.
I think you'll probably need to downgrade your phone from 2.3.3 to 1.32.405.6 (I could be wrong, but I don't think you can root 2.3.3 - I'm sure if I'm wrong someone in the know will correct me).
This guide seems to cover downgrading -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
then this guide is great for flashing a ROM etc -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11557769
I'd recommend Virtuous Unity for a 3.0 Sense rom, but there are others out there.
Hope that helps
Good luck!

No problem, I know it can be hard if you don't know where to start.
1) Yup, it will erase the content on your phone, but shouldn't erase your SD card.
You can back your contacts up to the SD card through the People application:
people-> menu -> import/export -> export to SD card -> choose account to export.
this will save them as a .vcf file in the root of your SD card, you then reverse the process once you have your new ROM installed.
I think the most popular application to use to back-up your apps is Titanium backup (available from the market), however I think this needs root permissions, so you'll likely not be able to use it (if my previous assumption about not being able to root 2.3.3 is correct). I use a different app called Appmonster which I find better for restoring market links (personal opinion), and I don't think this needs root.
I think it's possible to back up your settings using the above apps, however I'm sure I read that it's not recommended, especially when moving to a sense 3.0 ROM.
Your photos and videos should already be on your SD card, however it might be worth using the (PC) sync software to sync them onto your pc first just in case.
I'm pretty sure you will like your 3.0 ROM, I love the one I'm using. however there are other threads that detail how to restore your phone to stock, I'm sure it's more complex than this (I've not tried it) but I would assume you just flash back a stock ROM. If your handset is network branded you could re-flash either the stock network ROM or a stock HTC ROM - I'd definitely read up on this before attempting it though.
Good luck!
cheers,
Grim

THIS IS NOT TRUE, the desire HD will NOT receive Sense 3.0 a good example of this...http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/htc-sense-3-0-will-only-support-sensation-evo-3d-flyer-and-new/
Not officially at least, XDA is full of partial sense 3.0 ROMS, and I'm sure will be quickly growing with more and more full sense 3.0 ROMS
htc does however, state, they may try to work in a few htc sense 3.0 components into some of the other devices.

Oxygen 2.3.2, with dalvik-to-SD zip flashed afterwards is really fast, great battery and plenty of space.
You can get more space by flashing the Bravo Sense or CM7r2 hboots before flashing the ROM.
I have the Bravo Sense hboot at the moment with the above setup and have 163 MB free even though I have 54 apps installed. There would be even more free space with the CM7r2 hboot, I just can't be bothered reflashing right now!

[Q] *noob* How do i update my DHD to sense 4.0/4.1?

Hey guys,
I have Desire HD for like a year I guess, and I have never tried to update stuff and jailbreak (root) it or anything..
After a long time I feel that I need to have a little refreshment for my phone and do something with it.
A friend told me that if I would update it to Sense 4 it will be just great.
and thats what i want to do, to update my phone to Sense 4.
I dont want any other ROMs that people made, just the normal HTC Sense 4.0/4.1
Can you guys help me out and tell me how can I do that?
BTW. current sense version is like 2.1 or something.
Thanks, Ori.
Sure. You'll need to buy another htc phone to get what you want.
Any rom you find here will be ported from another device. The most you'll be able to get from your carrier/htc is sense 3.0, go over to the website, download the ruu, follow the instructions.

I strongly advise that you do not use a video. AAHK comes with an extremely clear, detailed manual; if you read it thoroughly and make sure you understand it, you won't have any problems at all.

i second that. i cannot stress the importance of thoroughly reading the 'effen maunel'.
there is no 'official' htc provided ics and sense 4/.1 rom for the htc desire hd. however, developers have managed to port these roms from other devices, as well as includeing additional features. the aahk will make your phone rooted and s-off. if you are on android 2.3.5(and maybe others, in not sure) it will run twice, first to downgrade the software, and then to root and s-off.
personally, my favourite sense 4.1 rom is sabsa prime(very very stable and some nice additional functionality).
it's probably a good idea to read a bit about how to use a custom recovery and flash roms etc
have fun! :good:
