[Q] Can i root HTC desire HD ver 2.3.3... ? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys can anyone tell me if my phone is possible of root.
Android Version 2.3.3
Sw Version 2.50.161.3
Thank you

You can root but not before you have downgrade -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
No fix for sw v.2.50.x so far
After that you can upgrade to 2.36.405.2 and use Gingerbreake 1.20 to still have root and su.

this is a simple guide how to downgrade your desire hd and than root it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152233

oh, yeah, if you don't have branded device there is no need for gold card.

On a second note - you might want to backup your current APN details (Access Point Name and password for your internet data connection) before you flash to another rom. APN Backup & Restore does this easily. You save your default carrier APN info to an xml file on your SD Card. Then when you flash a new rom, the first thing you can do is run APN Backup & restore, delete the rom default APNs, restore your own and then connect to the net as usual. This is useful if the rom you flash doesn't have your correct APN with it or has a list and you don't know which one to choose. (This can save a billing headache too.)
You might want to backup your current rom too in case you need to swap back to it.
This is just in case you are new to all of this.

You cannot root any newer HTC desire hd stock rom, what you can do is downgrade, and then root. If you really love stock rom then flash a pre rooted stock rom.
BUT to flash, you need ROOT, S-OFF. And to ROOT and S-OFF you need to DOWNGRADE FIRST.

if you are like me and you are unable to downgrade by those tutorials due to the software version your on use this.....
THEY WONT LET ME POST LINK! IF YOU EMAIL ME ILL SEND YOU THE LINK
[email protected]
guaranteed to work took me 5 days to find this.
Follow it to the letter and you will be fine.

ace hack kit, located here on xda, will do it all for you, you simply install, follow the instructions and let the premade hack kit, downgrade, root, and prepare you to flash a rom, it is soooo simple anyone can do it. Read the manual inside of the hack kit.
Thanks button always appreciated!

ace hack kit- .. May be i got it wrong, but there was some problem using this tool on dhd eu version (build number/software n 2.50.xxx)

yes, u can after a successful downgrade, that's what I did

sure you can, here are so much kind-heart men.

Root without downgrade!
How about:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/
It's as easy as "download -> run" and it works brilliantly!
I suggest, instead of doing it on Windows and dealing with all them complications, just booting a Ubuntu Live CD (it's not as bad as it sounds, I actually liked it the first time I tried it and now I have it installed by my Windows) and just run the command:
wget http://droid.neolobster.com/roms/aahk-25102011.zip && unzip aahk-25102011.zip && sudo ./hack-ace.sh
Click to collapse
in terminal, press "1" and be afk for 5 mins.
Doesn't erase your data, doesn't format your phone, doesn't downgrade your Android OS.
What it DOES do is:
Automagically turn your sdcard into a goldcard
Set Radio S-OFF
Set SuperCID
Remove Carrier SIMLOCK
Install Clockworkmod Recovery
Root the phone
Install RomManager
Install Superuser
Good luck with it

I would recommend arhd 6.1.5 from mike1986 after root

Easy way to root a stock 2.2 rom?

Hello Guys
Just bought my Desire - but it was pre-installed with the 2.2, is there any easy solution for rooting this?
Downgrade then use unrevoked
Hi Numsefis,
you need to downgrade your phones HBOOT. Read this: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745903
DaCe
okay.. that's great, but hoped that there would be an easier solution, for the HBOOT 0,92.. But i'll root it and install new firmware... Will you prefer the OpenDesire or Stock ROM?
you will loose your ROM and all settings. The .zip contains a Stock 2.1 ROM. After the downgrade you need to unrevoke and flash a new one.
I'm using this: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
very nice, will it be possible to make a backup with the HTC function before root, and then restore when rooted?
What's the Radio package for?
The Backup only stores personal Data. Your ROM will be gone. After unrevoking your phone you will have the Nandroid BackUp.
Basically, the radio rom is the firmware that runs the phone, wireless and blutooth portions of the phone. Newer versions are likly to improve performance or fix bugs.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
OK thanks....
Then i root the phone, install 2,2 then make a nandroid backup when the phone is configured... And also install the radio fix...
Hopefully i can get paid apps in my market
downgrade -> unrevoke -> radio -> rom -> enjoy

ps: sry for double post
Thx alot for the info, but my phone was running HBOOT 0,92, so i think it's okay
from my link
Q. What is the difference between HBOOT 0.83 and 0.92?
A. 0.92 is installed if you apply the official OTA froyo update. If you care about rooting and custom ROMs, you want to avoid the OTA update currently.
Q. How do I downgrade to HBOOT 0.80?
A. Don't - there is no reason to. If you want to root or use a custom ROM or debrand there is no need to. If you have an SLCD screen, the current method for downgrading will break your screen.
Q. Can I debrand my phone with HBOOT 0.83?
A. Yes. If your software version is 1.21.405.2 or lower (for example, branded O2 phones), you can simply use this RUU with a goldcard to debrand and install stock 1.21.405.2. You can then upgrade to OTA froyo if you wish to. This RUU will also flash your HBOOT to 0.83.

can't get unrevoked to find my phone.... :S
have you installed the USB Driver like the html document says?
Yep, got it working, the guide i read, missed a step, that the ADB driver should be installed under Restore....
Now i got my phone rooted, and installed the Market fix... BUT i can't see that the market is unlocked for all programs???

[Q] Rooting HTC Desire... -completely lost-

Hey guys,
I'll start with a heads up; complete newb here so I hope i have the right forum/section. Furthermore I appologise for my English, it is not my native language so I hope I can make myself clear. So far for the disclaimers.
Here's the situation; I have a Dutch HTC desire and I am absolutely lost in the rooting proces. I'll give you guys my specs first;
Phone
- HTC Desire running Android 2.2 Froyo from the OTA update
- Hboot version 0.92.0001
- NO Goldcard, regular microSD 4 gig that came with the device, haven't altered it
- Radio 5.09.00.20
PC:
- Windows 7 x64
- HTC Sync installed
Now I want root, preferebly with OpenDesire and A2SD so have been googling about the entire weekend now, but haven't found any guides that match my specs fully, havent got a clue where to start really with the rooting process. For instance; most downgrading guides talk about needing to use Hboot 0.92, where mine is 0.92.0001. Also some guides tell me I need a goldcard, others say I don't.
This is where I'm at right now, having read several guides these are the steps I think I have to take;
1. Backup everything using Mybackuppro
2. Downgrade using PB99IMG.ZIP. Is this correct, and will it work with my Hboot? Will I need a Goldcard for this?
3. Root the phone using Unrevoked. Will this work, concedering I have HTC Sync installed, and if no will a normal uninstall through the Windows programs uninstall be sufficient for "Uninstall HTC Sync completely" or are further meassures required? Will it work on my radio version, or is this not of any matter at this point?
I believe that at this point, my phone is worthless, right? There is no rom installed, so at this point I would need to install a rom. So on to step 4;
4. Install OpenDesire rom. I have read things about it having to be a zip file, the files I found though were .exe's Will the .exe do, or have I found the wrong files? Also I read that in order for the camera to work on OD, i need radio version 5.x, which I do. Will the rooting/downgrading proces make any changes to the radio version also?
5. Is this it? Have I missed anything, or are these roughly the steps I have to take to downgrade from 2.2, root, and install OD (which I believe also is a 2.2 version, with the JIT correct?)
Any tips, advises and remarks would be highly appriciated, coming from an ancient Nokia E65 I'm sort of unsure how to handle Android, how import small nuances like the exact version of Hboot are.
Also, if I have left out any important information please do not hesitate to ask, i'll reply ASAP.
Not one reply? Anyone?

Dude did u manage to root your desire let me know ? i can pm you the links
You probably have the new phones which is with the SLCD screens. There is currently only 1 method to root those. But you need to operate with a black screen. Which means you won't be sure if you really pressed the right option or not. Try search for the SLCD root for HTC Desire.

Not yet mate, when I do I'll let you know
Downgrading will require a goldcard if your phone is network branded. It is necessary to root your phone.

Still have the AMOLED version, not the SLCD one... Was one the first with a Desire in Holland, just sort of late with rooting it... and now there's hundreds of outdated tuturials, making it hard to figure out which ones still work

Ok, thx. I bought the phone without any form of network branding, your post implies that I will not be needing a goldcard then, correct? Or do I need it anyway for A2SD?
Right, what ROM is on it at the moment? IF it's 2.09.405.8 then do the following...
Download this file:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed_txt.zip
and rename it PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip!!) and copy to the root of your SD card. Turn phone off and boot into HBOOT by holding Vol-down whilst turning it on. Follow the instructions and allow it to update (assuming it works). Once done, reboot and you'll be back on 1.21.405.x and you can now root your phone using unrEVOked
OR
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
If you run this utility it will tell you if you need a goldcard. If you do need one, you can quit it, make one, and run it again.

The problem with the first method is that it corrupts your misc partition, which will need fixing. The second one takes care of everything.
Worked like a charm guys, thanks so much! Running OpenDesire right now, absolutely love it! Thanks again!

[Q] Rooting + Custom Roms: What to care about?

OK, so first of all: YES, I have read almost every sticky about this.
I just want to make sure, I'll do everything right and not destroy my phone.
My Goal:
- Root access (to disable HTCs annoying startup sound and various apps )
- Installing a fast + battery-saving + stable Sense-Based ROM
- Having the possiblity to restore everything to factory default when needed
My Phone:
HTC Desire HD w/ Android Version 2.3.3
I've read that you cannot root your device with this version. Am I right?
My Questions:
- How can I make a backup of my original Android + HTC Sense files?
- Will there be any situation that I am not able to restore anything when my Phone is messed up? (I remember my old iPhone, if something went wrong with the JB, you just needed to go into iTunes, press Restore and everything is fine)
I don't want to make a Quick Shot like read one tutorial, do it like that and boom, Phone's messed up.
Can you recommend me tutorials for:
- Creating a backup?
- Rooting my phone?
- Installing a custom 2.3.3 ROM?
- What else I need to do to perform those 3 above steps?
(Yes, I've read the stickies as I said, but I always like other users to directly help me with my questions )
Thank you in advance Fellas
So OK, I've managed to come a little clearer:
1.: Permroot via Visionary - very easy, seems to work with any Android Version
2.: S-Off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 + Radio-S-Off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 - seems to be quite easy as well, BUT requires a downgrade
3.: I am able to install custom ROMs
So: To fully "unlock" my phone I'll probably need to downgrade it? But if I install custom ROMs I can basically choose any Android Version I want?
AND: What about Backups/Restore/etc. if anything goes wrong? Which security do I have?
WAIT!
Permroot Visionary only works on sense build 1.32 ONLY.
You will only gain temproot and have the options to:
[*] Backup data with Titanium Backup
[*] Directly downgrade to 1.32
You could use this guide to downgrade
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152233
Follow the guide carefully, as mistake will bring upon the brick lord. But you'll be safe once you've downgrade to 1.32. Plus, if its bricked anyway, just install ruu using adb and you'll be back to your stock sense.
8penned from my blazing fast DHD
So if something goes wrong while Downgrading I still don't have a 100% brick?
PS: Yes I discovered Visionary didn't work for 2.3.3 (even Temproot didn't work). I now try to use GingerBreak to root it and backup my current Android Version using ROM Manager. But GingerBreak is running the second time for over half an hour and nothing changes (USB Debugging enabled, SD Card Mounted)
The critical "flashes" are the bootloader and the radio. At least the radio is flashed while downgrading. I am not sure about the bootloader.
But the risk to brick your phone is very very low. But it is possible.
Edit: If Gingerbreak does not work, you have to check your build number. It is in settings, phone info, software info. The build number has be be lower or equal 2.36. If it is higher, you have to use a build number 2.50 guide to root your phone.

Desire HD downgrade before root?

hi experts,
i need some help. i want to root the desire hd of my brother and i don't know where to start. i successfully root-s-off-customrom my htc desire and now i want to do the same on my brother's dhd.
i have tried the visionary+ tool but after ticking read/write permission and tap temp root, i'm just stacked with plain black screen (with clock and notification is active).
question is, do i need to downgrade first before making this root process?
the desire hd details:
Baseband
12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2
Build Number
2.50.707.4 CL91002 release-keys
Software:

i appreciate your quick response on this. thank you guys!

U can use any of these guides - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877295
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597
Or
*BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS PROCESS YOU CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE WITH A CORRUPT RADIO.IMG*
To flash a radio using hboot with radio S-OFF you can simply take the zip file PD98IMG.zip from the hack kit (IN THE RADIO FOLDER) (Thanks ATTN1) and remove the radio.img file from it using winrar or 7zip, and put a new radio.img from elsewhere in the zip named radio.img and using store (NO) compression or Normal compression. Make sure it is named exactly PD98IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard. Reboot your phone into hboot and the new radio will prompt you to load. Press volume up on the phone and it will load automatically and ask you to press power to reboot.
Again, flashing radios is a risky business, do it very carefully. Make sure MD5 checksum matches.
I'd recommend following the linked guides
And do not post multiple threads regarding the same topic.

[Q] Downgraded to 2.1, Rooted successfully, now low space problem,Can't update new v.

Hi,
Sorry I am a new to android and to this forum also. I have some questions which I need your expert opinion.
I have downgraded using [HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT) and rooted successfully with Unrevoked because other method did not work.
I have installed some programs, to my surprise it has occupied all the space and application can't be transferred to SD. Later, I found App2SD is not working with this version 2.1.
Update phone popped out & I tried to download and install but in vain. It shows some triangular shape with exclamation mark inside that triangle.
What is the solution now ? can I transfer my app2SD like before with 2.2.2 version ? How to unroot now & update from the server and revert back to the same because I found downgrade is outdated ?
Did I make mistake choosing downgrade method? What are the choices do I have to work like before ?
Thank you in advance.
oh god what on earth have you been doing.
If you have another android phone then make a goldcard and stick it into the broken desire.
boot into fastboot mode (hold back & power), plug in via usb, download and install the latest WWE RUU (can find on my guide).
If you can't make a goldcard, look for the RUU for your network provider (e.g. vodafone, tmobile etc.) and use that. Make sure it's a 2.2 Froyo RUU and its not just the OTA update!!
if that's too hard for you, go on my guide and download the 2.3 RUU and use that.
Once the phone's been updated go to revolutionary.io and use the tool. It works every time.
Then flash recovery, look at my guide on how to do so.
Then backup your current ROM and flash away with anything you want. Just make sure to do a full wipe between flashes (boot, system, data, cache, dalvik)
Dear bortak,
Thank you for the reply.
I do not have another android so it looks that I won't be able to make a goldcard. Among other options you gave me ?RUU I will look at your guide how to make. Hope that 2.3 will works.
Is gold card necessary ? Can I make it after 2.3 installation ?
Will do accordingly as per you advice.
How to back up current ROM and flash anything ???
Sorry I am totally new to this androind. Has been using like a layman.
Thank you much appreciated.
unless your phone was bought unbranded, it will have a Customer ID that links it to a particular network. If you try to use a RUU (ROM Update Utility) that was not released for your phone, you will receive a CID Error. A goldcard makes the phone ignore the CID, and therefore you can use any RUU you want, so you don't have to worry about getting the right one.
So, if you got your phone with Vodafone like I did, you need to download a Vodafone RUU.
The 2.3 RUU is the 2.3 Gingerbread released by HTC, and it was not given as an OTA (Over The Air) update. The 2.3 RUU de-brands your phone, and it doesn't matter where you got the phone from, you can use that one regardless.
It is recommended that you use the RUU for your network provider, as if that goes wrong, you can try it again, or use the 2.3 RUU.
If you use the 2.3 RUU and something goes wrong, you have nothing to fall back on, because you cannot simply roll-back software versions using RUU's, you can only update.
So, if I were you, I'd go to shipped-roms.com and try to find the right RUU for you. If you bought the phone unbranded (i.e. you din't get it from a network) you can just use the latest WWE RUU. If you got it on contract or PAYG from a network e.g. Vodafone, then you need to download the Vodafone RUU. (Make sure it's the 2.2 Froyo one, and it doesn't say "OTA", because that's just an update, not the full RUU).
It is not branded (no network). What ever is best I try to do. Which one is the l latest WWE RUU ?
Do I need to follow this full:
S-OFF
[STEP1]- download "Bravo Stock" from Alpharev
[STEP2]- download Android Flasher
[STEP3]- use android flasher to flash "Bravo Stock"
[STEP4]- run the RUU again and wait for it to finish
Thanks.

Nono, you only need to use that guide when something goes wrong.
Find the WWE RUU in #resources, boot into fastboot, plug it in and run the RUU. Then you can look on S-OFF problems.
Thanks & Need to explore android more
Dear bortak,
Thanks for your guidance.
While exploring the abilities of android, I was lost. Without you it would not have possible.
I have installed 2.3.3 accordingly. It has upgraded perfectly.
I had problem with rooting
I did according to revolutionary. io It worked with ease, S-Offed but not rooted.
In my desperation I have tried Unrevoked. It also did not work. It says "Your firmware is too new" . Did all the methods from changing version of Unrevoked and uninstalling one program. Still did not work. No ROOT
Finally, I found that I have not done complete task. I re-tried revolutionary. io and browse through different resources about it. Revolutionary was explained in a simple & efficient way in theunlockrdotcom. I followed that those steps & finally root was successfully.
It would not have possible without your support.
Now, I have done rooting. What wanted to see other aspects ? What can be done now to make the android works without restrain ? Flashing ?? ROM ?
Now, do I have to make a goldcard ?
Please advice me what are the other things I can do to work with android above the usual layman. Thanks.

Thanks.

Since you already upgraded to the 2.3 RUU, the 2.2 RUU's go out of the window, so you don't need a goldcard.
Flashing is basically the process of replacing the entire Android OS for a different version.
Key subgroups are:
Sense 2.0/2.1
Sense 3.0/3.5
Stock AOSP Gingerbread
Customised AOSP Gingerbread
MIUI AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP ICS (UNSTABLE)
AOSP: Android Open Source Project
If you have not already done so, you need to flash a recovery image to your device. You can either do this by installing the 4EXT recovery control from the Play Store, or you can look at my guide for guidance on how to do so manually.
Remember to backup before flashing anything.
Some ROMs take advantage of custom bootloaders. Custom bootloaders basically change the partition sizes of the nand memory of your device (its internal memory). It changes the /system /data and /cache partitions, and because many ROMs only require smaller /system partitions, more memory can be freed up in /data. Go to alpharev.nl for more information, there is a guide on how to flash bootloaders on my guide also, and read on the thread what hboot the ROM needs.
Before you flash, it is good to do a full wipe (boot, system, data, cache, dalvik) as this helps to prevent any errors from occurring.
Looks complicated though I will try. Thank you very much.

It's really not.. you can find tutorials for all of this on my guide, some even with videos.
Great !
You have a great tutorial & help attitude. I didn't know anything about the android after using Desire for more than 1 years. I feel good & content that I have achieved something with the help of your tutorials & feedback.
With the help of your guide I was able to flash the rom. It is called cyanogen 7.1.
I flashed this stable version and worried that the latest won't work on my android.
It's very good but I am have big time problem since it has no market and not able to download anything since market can't be downloaded.
I had backup my original ROM . Now if I want to flash another ROM than do I need to do the same process with wipe out data ?
Do I need to backup this cyanogen also ?? What if I want to use my original ROM, in that case how to recover/restore my original ROM ? What are the others good ROM you suggest to flash ? I have no choices, nor I can choose. Cyanogen is good but that problem with market.
Lastly the root is there, will it remain if I flash another ROM?
Thank you for your wonderful guidance, feedback & tutorial. God bless.

No, you don't need to backup when you're restoring your old ROM, however do a wipe whenever moving to another ROM (with backup or new flash).
The reason you don't have market and other google apps is because cyanogen is so big, google has disallowed them to include google apps with their ROMs, and they need to be flashed seperately, like I mentioned in the previous post.
Click the gapps link (from the previous post) and flash it the same way you did Cyanogen
Thanks.
You mean I need to flash google market as well like a cyanogen or I can install it or with the android flasher?
BTW, what is gapps link ? Thanks..

oh my bad I got confused with another post, link wasn't there.
gapps - Google Apps - Play store, gmail, setup wizard etc. etc.
You flash the gapps.zip like cyanogenmod - through recovery. This is only needed with Cyanogenmod, all* other ROMs have them.

*well most do at least, those that don't tell you.
Excellent. Market has finally worked. Thank you
