I don't have that problem. That's rather odd, I've never heard of that happening. Maybe you got some debris under the button and that's adding pressure to the sensor, and that pressure makes it nearly activated and only needs a small additional amount of pressure to fully activate it? That's the only reason I can think of lol.

I have heard of a few ppl who had similar issues, not very many shouldnt be a prob i would check it like the other guy said tho, i think it was a similar post also. I have been having the same problem. The button will still "click" but it will turn on well before it clicks. It will turn on by just resing my finger on part of it. I was wondering if there is anything I can do short of permantly voiding my warranty by taking it apart and replacing the power button. This only started happening after I think I dropped my phone on the power button with a case on. I still have one replacement left with Verizon but that would require turning s-on and returning my phone to stock. I also want to keep my amoled screen. Does anyone have any insight in this matter?
hi im having a problem with my desire z keyboard. some keys such as O, P and S are not working well. like i have to press them really hard to bring the letter on the screen. the hardware touch is fine like the keys feel normal when i press them but with some 4 5 keys, the letter doesnt come up unless i press really hard. anyone else having such a problem and solutionss?
I am having the same problem, but I've kinda got used to the on-screen keyboard anyways.
Same problem here, and for another 3 people on Polish forum said about this too. I have send my DZ on warranty - waiting for answer. I have rooted ulocked and changed rom so I am curious about what they will say :> Depending on how much people have this problem it's a hidden defect for DZ not caused by user.
I have problems with my "a,s,d, and spacebar". Too bad that my Desire Z's warranty is already expired. Agree with the other poster, best way around it is to get use to the touch screen keyboard.

My DZ keyboard had been working perfect until recently.
The 'i' key and space key need to be pressed hard to register. But for the i key, sometimes if I press it hard enough, it will register twice. I think it is related to dirt/dust getting into the key or aging issue. And since my DZ is nearly two years old, I am not complaining. Anyone tried to take their phone apart and clean or replace the keyboard?
As i said before, I have send my phone to HTC Service with this problem and yesterday I got it back.
My phone was rooted and "htcdev unlocked" with Virtuous Sense ROM on board when I sended it and... there was no problem with it . They replaced "FPC Pre-Assy Qwerty" and didn't even restore orginal OS. Keyboard is working perfect.
Im having problems with my . button, no more warranty, so i guess i just have to live with it...
Have you attempted to shift to a different ROM? I had encountered certain hindrances akin to this whilst utilizing certain beta ROMs. Upgrading the ROM had solved this. Alternatively, it may be a hardware malfunction.
have the same problem as yashif,o,p,i,u need to press harder sometimes it register the key twice is it a hardware problem?

Sounds like dirty contacts in the keys. the proper way to fix this is to carefully disassemble and clean the keyboard parts with some diluted isopropyl alcohol.
The _improper_, _unsafe_ _lazy_ method that does not require disassembly but is probably a stupid thing to so (but I've done with success on another phone, not a Desire Z), is to remove the battery, spray a bunch of DILUTED rubbing alcohol onto the keyboard, saturating it so that it runs into the nooks and crannies, then repeatedly press the buttons up and down -- with the idea that some alcohol gets into the contacts and cleans them. Let the phone dry completely for 24 hours, put the battery back in and hope it turns on, then hope the keyboard works again.
Let me stress that I would only do this with a phone that is past warranty and that you wouldn't mine if it never works again...
Hey guys.
Late response but I happened across this thread when I was having this problem for a few days. I slowly realized after reinstalling my ROM with no joy, that I'd actually experienced this problem before, back when I'd taken the phone apart to replace the screen. Back then it turned out i'd left the keyboard ribbon cable loose which was causing some of the keys not to work.
Well it appears this time I may have knocked the cable out of place after dropping the phone (I do that alot) as after opening the phone, taking the cable out and then simply popping it back in, my ketyboard was back in working order!
If anyone is unsure about opening up the phone and trying, it's simply the first 3 minutes of the below video, upto removing the ribbon cable (just take it out and pop it back in, easy!)

Good luck!
DONT spray a bunch of DILUTED rubbing alcohol onto the keyboard
sorry for digging old threads but i had this problem and i thought someone will have it in the future
PLEASE DONT DO THIS:

The phone is too well made it has 3 layers until u get to the contacts
and is 95% probable you hard brick your phone
Dust CANT get to the contacts, instead the problem comes from the metal part touching the contacts that is bent overtime.
these things look like a ( and when they are pressed they go like this | and in the middle of them you will see
i will make a full tutorial how to repair bad contacts on this
Aaand.. here it is
Hi everyone,
My phone seems convinced that I'm pressing the volume down key occasionally, but I'm not.
I'll miss calls, the battery will be emptied faster as the screen keeps coming on, and it has prevented me from being able to boot the phone.
It's not physically stuck, and I've even now just replaced the main board flex cable part.
edit2: I think the power key is also being "pressed" since the screen is coming one, but the volume isn't being changed. So I'm now thinking I replaced the wrong part maybe. So confused.
There's a chance of some water damage, through rain and sweat (after using it to record my runs), but it's not been dunked in beer or any of the usual causes.
Is there anything else physical that I might be able to fix (or just wiggle)?
Is it possible this is a software issue somehow?
Any advice will be much appreciated, this is so far beyond any warranty I'll do anything.
(edit: I have seen the other similar questions, but none had an answer)
Are you sure this is a hardware problem? Have you tried factory reset? Install a new ROM may be..
Am certain.
Anyway, it's too late, now sold (as faulty) on ebay.

Same issue was with me when my desire fell in some water. Optical joy pad was broken..... I got it replaced and phone was normal again.......the faulty joy pad was sending unknown signals which were being interpreted as volume down.......and also, whenever I pressed power button once or twice, phone restarted...... It was all fixed after the repair....

I dropped my HOX and cracked the digitizer a while ago and i still used my hox since to me it's not really a problem to have a broken glass. A couple of days ago capacitive buttons started to malfunction. Now they are not working anymore. I installed Button Savior to make the phone still usable, but now i am looking forward to solve the problem.
I am asking a simple question because i opened my hox so many times resolving GPS and WIFI malfunctions (my WIFI and GPS now are stronger than Galaxy Nexus', so that's a hardware problem), and played a lot with the connection to antenna pins. There is the remote chance that i actually broke something on the mainboard. The question is: replacing the digitizer+display would 100% solve the problem of capacitive buttons? Are the capacitive buttons totally integrated with screen digitizer?
Maybe it's just a silly question, but i want to be sure before buying a spare display+digitizer.

Bump!
I'm also having troubles with my capacitive buttons..
Opened my HOX to fix the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth issue with a couple solder point, closed it back, connection is now amazingly good, but:
-I have no lights on my capacitive buttons (except for the lights off they work alright).
-I have no sound on my loudspeaker (the one behind the device), tested it with a 1.5v battery (like this: youtube.com/watch?v=xIMHGkxw72o) and the speaker itself is fine, but, no sound.
I'm from Brazil, no HTC presence here, so, no authorized service where I can send it to be fixed.
I'm hoping you guys could give me some help on how to proceed to identify/ fix those issues!
Anything???

I went on a rage and FULLY disassembled the phone... putting all back together later on.
Everything is fine now!
For me, I GUESS this cable was disconnected: etradesupply.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/o/e/oem_htc_one_x_navigation_light_flex_cable_ribbon_4_.jpg
It's related to capacitive buttons light and loudspeaker (I don't know if anything else goes trough it)...unfortunately can't use this solution for nonworking buttons...
=/
sorry for bring alive this thread but im very interested on thi issue, im having the exact same problem after "fixing" wifi issue :/ does reaplcing the digitizer fixes this problem?

I've also just had an issue with non-working capacitive buttons, they light up but won't actually do anything, the phone hasn't been dropped and is usually left on the sideboard in the bedroom as I mostly use my newer HTC One instead, any reason why it would just suddenly just stop like that? was fine the day before whilst playing a game on it.
Hey guys, i got this problem with my xperia pro. After some searching, i found this guy who has exactly the same problem like me.
http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/33601
Hello everyone!
I hope you could help me so I'll get straight to the problem:
I was just at a gym and my phone droped from chair to the ground (no more then 20cm = ~8 inches) and after that (I guess) my keyboard is not working properly. I mean... come on! 20cm?!!
To be exact... everything else is working, there is even no spot of fall on it. Touchscreen and side buttons for volume and power are ok, as well as meny button, but 6 buttons on keyboard are mixed as well as back and home button.
When i press "a" it adds "space". I get same effect if i click space. That way "a" is mixed with "space", "d" with "enter", "." with " ' " and "back" with "home" button.
Any advice? Could it be that flat of keyboard has moved a little or something? Im not even sure it is from the fall, just guessed...
Dont know what to do... I still have 20 months more of guarantie so should i take it to official repare then or try to disasseble it myself to check it?
Tnx in advance

Well, i'm used to disassembly iphone 3GS and 4, so i could open my Xperia Pro alone, my problem is that i don't want to risk something when the problem isn't the flex cable. Has anyone of you experienced the same problem and helped it to fix the flex-cable?
I think my garanty is void, because i opened my bootloader and put another rom on it
Please help, i hate it to write on the ondisplay-keybord when there is the chance to use the hardware-keyboard. ):
Are the pro a slide keyboard phone?
Sent from my Xperia Arc S using xda premium
Yeah the Pro is a Slider Phone with a hardware keyboard!
Yesss, its the flex.
If you slide it slowly in a silent place you can probably hear a scraching sound.
I had the W715 before my arc and the keys stopped working one after one. Bought a flex cable from ebay and repaired it myself.
All you need is dissambly guide, proper screwdrivers, patience.
Good luck
