SD Card - root of the SD card??? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am attempting to refresh a semi-bricked rooted phone. I need to get it to "S-on". I have downloaded the .zip file i need to my PC. I need to save it "to the root of the SD card". Noobie question: what is the root of the SD card? That is not a folder I see. I have put the unrevoked-forever-son.zip file a few places on the SD card and it does not seem to be working. Where do i need to save this .zip file so that when i run bootloader it will find and exe the file??? Thanks!

Getting s-on won't revive a dead phone - if anything, it'll prevent you from trying other solutions. If you can get into the bootloader, then you aren't bricked... unless you can't get the phone to boot regardless of running RUUs, etc.
For the record, the root of the SD card means not in any folders. You don't flash the s-on tool through hboot, you flash it through recovery. But I wouldn't flash it anyway, try running an RUU to set the phone back to factory.

hmm, have you tried taking the card out, and putting it back in? You're going to need the Unrevoked S on tool, if your initial root method was Unrevoked. To run the Unrevoked S on tool, however, you need to flash it in recovery. Which would mean you need it on your sd card. That's the only part of the unroot process you need the SD card for, though. You can run the RUU from your computer to flash it back to stock, but you just need to use the Unrevoked S on tool before doing that. I'm not sure if you could flash the Unrevoked S on tool using adb, then making it so you wouldn't need your sd card. Maybe that's possible, but I've never had to do it that way, so I'm not sure. I would do a little research on if you can flash the Unrevoked s on tool using adb commands to do it.
This happened to me too, what did it for me was to format the sd card and problem solve. I didn't lose root access. If you want to try this, do it at your own risk.
Can your phone see it in recovery mode?
Have you tried formatting the microSD card?
If you can get it seen by recovery/hboot, follow this tutorial:

[Q] is it shot?

my friend was completly mindless. he used kernal manger to flash the cyanogenmod kernal to his phone. the phone is s-on and nothing works except the phone itself, it does not power properly it needs battery pull and plug ins to get it to start or it just vibrates 5x then freezes. it also does not recognize the sd OR pc, i cant get to it on the pc with correct drivers...its like its not there.
so i went to fix it for him and could not ruu due to the not seeing the device, and couldnt flash anything off the sd due to the sd being not recognized. he told me he had a failed unrevoked session and it put superuser on and cwm on. i CAN get to the hboot screen and when i go into recovery i get into cwm but nothing at all works...
i never saw a brick like this. i would like to call it a live brick dead lol
is it dead?

SD card not working? Do you have a card reader or another phone to put it in and format with? See if it is even recognized by anything else other than the phone.
I'm not sure but isn't an SD card necessary for CWM recovery to work?

if they want the phone to work, yeah.
sd works anywhere else. sd is not recognized by phone. nothing happens when its pushed in and using astro shows nothing there. cwm just opens but is completly non-functional

insane, but try to root it if its stable? anyone else here? i cant really think of another way....
has to be the craziest thing i seen
Can you not use a card reader to put the RUU on and flash it in hboot? I guess not if its S-ON, what error is it giving in unrevoked? If it flashed an alternate recovery then it has to be rooted..

Try some of the solutions above and let us know. Re-rooting or putting the RUU found here http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=108 on the SD card
My thoughts are the only fix i can see working would be to flash the RUU in hboot not cwm and then root it properly. That should work provided you can get it to read the sd card in hboot
SD card must be fat 32
the ruu you download must be named "PB31IMG.zip" the case is important it must be in all uppercase
and what you will do is put it on the sdcard using a card reader and your pc then put it in the phone then go into hboot it should read the card find the image and ask you if you wish to flash this. You should if it goes well have a stock phone... You can then run unrevoked again to root it this time...
can not access the sd card at all... sd card works fine in my computer... not mountable... can't figure it out...

Going back to stock.

Ok I rooted my EVO with revolutionary a couple days ago. Now I want to go back to stock. I run the lastest RUU but when I tried to put the 36img.zip into bootloader..it won't recognize the zip. which ya know that is to put back s-on. but it wont recognize the zip. Can someone help please.
Did you name the file correctly, PC36IMG, not PC36IMG.zip (so that your SD card recognize it as PC36IMG.zip and not PC36IMG.zip.zip)? Or is your SD card full? Or have you tried another SD card?

Yes I did rename it to the correct way and my sd card is not full..but didn't try with another sd card.
EDIT: Okay tried with different sd card and still nothing i guess this is not fixable right?
I think there is few more steps to it than just pc36img'ing back. U need to downgrade the hboot first. I think the thread is in general

Mmmm how can I downgrade the hboot? please help
can you give me a link to it.
The zip will only restore your phone back to stock, you'll need a diferent zip to restore S-ON after you zip the ruu (at least thats the way I have seen it done)

and why boot loader fail
and is there any way to fix the phone !!
thanks for helping
selook.
Are you sure you don't have any sd card on it? Seems like trying to read a PD98IMG file which usually is on sd card.
Also you are s-on and that can be a problem in flashing RUU in PD98IMG format. What RUU were you trying to install?
Delete any PD98IMG file on sd card and try to reboot normaly. Give more details.

"RUU Ace HTC WWE 1.32.405.6 Radio 12.28b.60.140e 26.03.02.26 M release 155891 signed.exe"
sorry i cant post the link of it
and get out from it the "rom.zip" then rename it to "PD98IMG.zip" then copy it into the sd card root trying to install it then i got this fail "bootloader fail"
-how i can make s-off ?
-the device will not boot into android its only start boot loader directly after powered on, the device start boot loader after powered on directly with or with out sd card
-when i try to make recover or factory reset the phone will vibrate and reboot into the boot loader
...
Its an old RUU by the way and your Hboot shows as being the latest.
Latest is 3.12.405.1 and I uploaded it for you Download here
Rename it PD98IMG and try again to flash from Hboot (delete the previous PD98IMG from sd card)
Before s-off try to make your device working.
Tell me if it works.
can you please re upload it for me it shown me error

[Q] Phone stuck on boot loop

Hi,
my phone stuck on boot loop, as i mentioned at the title. I mean it comes to HTC screen and then black screen and then again HTC screen. It happened when i try to move com.htc package to sd-card, i was trying to open some more place for my internal storage ( i didn't know that can happen.)
how can i fix this ? can you please help me thanks !:crying:
Unfortunately you tried to move an important system component (didn't even know it would let you).
In future, if you don't know what it is, you should research it first. If you can't find anything, don't touch it
To get it back, you will likely have to run an RUU, but you will lose everything except stuff on your sd card.
Find bortak's troubleshooting guide at the top of Q&A, find the bit on RUU, find and flash the 2.3.3. GB RUU.
In future, if you really want to make more space on the Desire, the only proper way is to research how to S-OFF, root and partition your sd card.
Do you have a Nandroid? You must take nandroid backup using CWM before going fishy with /system
Else try factory reset using stock recovery
To free system space, instead of moving important files, use Link2SD for moving apps to SD partition

thanks, i will try
I'm appreciated for your helps, i'm now at work, when i go home i 'll try your suggestion that installing RUU.
I don't have a nandroid and don't know what it is. And i tried all choices on HBOOT none of them worked !
And one more question my usb driver looks like broken when i connect computer my phone and go into HBOOT, it says "USB Device not recognized" but i can plug my sd card to my laptop, can i run RUU and flash proccess by my sd card and how ?

In the same troubleshooting guide there should be a section on how to extract the ROM.zip from the RUU
Then you rename it to PB99IMG.zip exactly, put it on the root of the sd card (not in any folder), and run it from the sdcard without cable.
Alternatively, if you search directly for the 2.3.3. RUU as PB99IMG.zip is should be available.
