[Q] .368 OTA software update problem - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I've been trying to update my phone OTA but it keeps saying "Could not update".
The phone downloaded the update, turned off the phone and started updating just to reboot and tell me that it couldn't update.
Do any of you have an idea why this is happening?
Phone details:
Rooted Arc 2.3.3;
3.0.1.A.0.145;
UK Generic (I don't live in the UK though).
I'd appreciate any help, dying to try the new update
Thanks in advance!

Maybe you deleted or disabled some system apps?

I haven't deleted anything other than bloatware off my Arc.
The apps I've deleted were mentioned in the "List of system apps" thread as "Safe to remove".
Other than that.. I've installed Supercharger...

make sure that no manager apps is running, if you still cant find any updates go to manage apps in settings - applications and force stop or clear data and you should get newest updates. Sometimes the downloading bar isnt changing for a few minutes because the server cant get an instant connection.

If you have modded contents, OTA will fail. This applies to removal of any "system" applications. ("system"=that can't be uninstalled via normal method. "root" is required to uninstall such applications).
Hope this helps.

Thanks, it updated properly now!
I've UnSupercharged the device and put all of the system apps back into place.
Can't wait to play around with it .

You must wait for your firmware region to be relesead OTA or flash another to your phone. See: General section of the Arc forum, the sticky thread on top -Index of Neo and Arc firmware.
Ps. Most new firmware has been released via PCC, try it!

A root attempt gone wrong :( Please Help

Xperia Arc 2.3.3 generic ending with .368
I attempted rooting my phone and was successful in it to as verified by "root checker" app. But something went wrong henceforth. Although I have been asking for solutions to my queries in some posts, the problems are mounting day by day and now it is daunting to post each of the problems in every post. So I will just lay it down here, in anticipation that I will receive help in some way
Here is what I did:
1) I used Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit and successfully completed the root process. (I had formatted and cleared all data on the phone prior to this)
I however, didn't understand much about the ADB drivers, but did as much as I could over a span of an hour or more by getting the Android SDK and downloading random drivers etc.
2) I downloaded "Root explorer" and started copying the files under the "safe to remove" list in accordance with this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089470
The problem starts now:
~ Market fails opens and force closes showing the following error The application Market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly
Browsing the Market is normal, but clicking on any app to download causes the force closure.
~ I try in vain to fix the problem by transferring all the files from the "SD" card and back into the System/App folder, but to no avail.
Now I did something I would deeply regret later on.
~ I formatted my phone. I erased all data and now I do not have the root explorer anymore.
~ I tried downloading SWs from other websites but even the browser force closes at the moment I hit "Download" at any point.
Without any native file manager I am unable to install any apps.
I tried in vain searching all over the internet about the problem I am facing but couldn't come up with anything substantial. After 6 hours of scouting I gave up and somehow only managed to get my contacts up.
~ I thought flashing another FW might help. I am trying to use the latest flash tool but even that shows an error "drivers missing" or something similar. I tried installing / updating the drivers but I get the message that "latest update is already installed". I later got a "S1boot driver missing" notification in the "installing manager" in bottom right corner.
Interestingly some of the system apps I moved and then returned to their original folder, show their widgets missing. Eg: I returned the clockxxx.apk to the original folder but it is still absent in the "widgets" option.
---
---
---
Present state: My phone is without any apps. Any attempts at downloading anything using either the Market or the Browser "force closes" it.
Please help me out with this.
P.S. I am a medical student. I do not understand software development, tweaking etc even in the remotest of terms. But I am trying as much as I can. So kindly bear with me for any obvious mistakes in putting forth the information or my ignorance towards something seemingly obvious.
There are problems relating to MTP connectivity also.
The phone fails to get detected and does not show up in "My Computers". Even SE PC companion SW fails to install the phone although it attempts to connect to it.
The Mass Storage mode works normally.
-----
Also I would like to point out, as is obvious from above that "Market" was fully functional after the root allowing me to download "root checker" etc.
The problem starts after I have transferred the .apk files from the System/App folder to a folder in SD card.

Use Sony Ericsson Update Service to repair the phone i.e. Reinstall the firmware then do the root but this time use titanium backup to uninstall the apps. But make sure you use titanium's backup feature to back up all apps just incase

TB gives the best option to "Freeze" them. I would personally recommend this as it gives you the option to run your phone without whatever is frozen. Once you are confident, then remove it.

This is actually a better idea for a noob or if youre not sure which app causes issues.

Thanks everyone for the response.
I read about the update service, but the support page for arc states that the SW is not available for arc. I know it was available for the X10 and such. Do I DL it and use it for my arc?
I am going ahead with downloading it but I would like to be sure of it this time. For once I would like to look before I leap
Yes you can use the one for x10. I know it's not available on se site for arc.
If you can't find it lemme know, I'll upload it for you

You have to install update service on your pc. Search SEUS in google
Sent from my LT15i using Tapatalk
The main problem is that my phone fails to connect in the MTP mode. Absolutely nothing shows up, PC Companion fails to detect it, even if it does, it doesn't connect with it even after 10+ tries. I just did a reinstall but now it is stuck at the "communicating with your phone" part for the past one hour.

That would be a great help. Kindly do so.
I did google both SEUS as said above and before that was searching the SE websit after googling for Update service by SE. It didn't show up for the X10 too.
I guess I am lost.
Finally my arc is healthy and normal.
Thanks for the support. I was trying out various flashing methods, downloading MTP drivers, getting my phone recognised in the Android SDK while all that was needed was an update from the SEUS. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup...ds/subject/updateservice/1.349192?cc=gb&lc=en
My phone is now running> 2.3.4 build 0.42. I have however lost the root (root checker app)
I am a little apprehensive to do a root again. I might stick with the stock one for now and may try again when I am more confident.
Thanks again. Have a good day.
Simple Root again & install Rooot-explorer.
In case of problems you can always use SEUS...
good luck
Glad it worked out for you and sorry I didn't read your request for SEUS earlier, but you found it anyway

Mmmmm, im with 3 too, although i have an unlocked XP could 3 be trying to force their bloatware filled FW onto us??.
Is that even possible?
P.S
Forgot to add in my first post that my phone is unlocked, unrooted and on official firmware, so untouched really lol

Ok, the notification was still there so thought i would try the update via my PC, it failed on numerous occasions so i gave up.
The notification is still there though
Just force close the app. It's a temp solution that would need to be repeated each time you reboot your phone.

Why don't you freeze the update service in titanium backup, no pesky notification and you can defrost it when a new update comes out

Also its only on the paid version now. Unless you have 3.99 to get it you won't be able to freeze. I don't know why they took that feature away from us the stingy b**tards. I have the same problem but I just did it a different way. I made a backup using TB and then uninstalled it using TB. nd now is all good. Why take the freeze feature. Not everyone has 3.99 to spare now days. Especially when we have bills and shopping to pay. Grrrrrrr

How do I remover 'System Update' Notification

I'm currently running a Rooted version of 4.1.B.0.431 Generic Global (with Unlocked Bootloader) on my LT15i Arc. And today I received an OTA notification telling me that .587 was available to me, so I attempted to update (not too fussed if I loose Root).
But it failed on every occasion I tried (just like last week when I tried to update via the PC Companion)... So I thought I'd give up and ignore the update Notification.
But it's now stuck on my Notification Bar telling me I have an update (even after rebooting 3 times!!)... I've gone into the "Software Update" and told it not to Notify me but it keep doing so!!..
I'm not fussed about updating, as I quite like having Root, and don't want to go through the rigmarole of doing it again!!. :silly:
How do I remove the 'Update Notification' from the bar (it's taking up room!! ), Will it dissapear on it's own, or is there a tool/procedure available to remove it??
Cheers
Sim :fingers-crossed:
Nae Probs I finded it!!...
Menu> Settings> Apps > All > Update Center > Clear data
Hopefully it won't bother me again!!
If it does come back, since your rooted, you could just delete the update center apk in the systems folder.
It will never bother you again
If it does then root explorer or similar search "update" then delete the .apk's

Cheers Doods!!..
It came back... again... and again... and again... and again...
So I got a copy of 'Root Uninstaller' and Backed up the App (you never know) and 'Dissabled' it rather than uninstalling! :fingers-crossed:

I'll just add one more post Here's a link to all the system files, if you do happen to delete some by accident: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141898

Remove bloatware and ota update

I've just rooted my device (bootloader still locked) and now I'm wondering if I remove apps I don't use, will an ota update still work? I remember I had problems in the past with it (Asus transformer). After I removed some standard apps, the update function didn't work anymore. I know I can freeze apps with titanium backup but I prefer to remove them.
No one..? I'm talking about apps like Google+,hangouts, etc.

Never tried it honestly... But I think it should work... I already tried extracting an ota update of Sony before and theres nothing there about checking firmware contents. Regardless though I suggest you create a backup first.
Thanks for your reply. I've got a backup so I just go ahead and see if it's works.

Disable OTA after root

Anyone know how to disable OTAS after Root?
I'm searching for the same info!

There's numerous threads on this with using some debloater tool, but I want to know the specific process myself to freeze it.

I'm on the same boat. Looking for which files I can freeze using Titanium Backup.
Yay for root coming out! Now let the discovering and tinkering begin

So far, freezing this apk seems to do it?: LGDMSClient.apk

I'm not rooted. But that is the apk I Debloated to block updates. It quietly kept the 611A update away for a week.
And when I went to accept 611A, as soon as I un-blocked LGDMSClient.apk, the update immediately started downloading again.

this is under system/priv-app/LGDMSClient(folder)/LGDMSClient.apk
Should we remove that apk? Or the whole folder? Or just freeze the Update Center on tibu.

I ended up using Titanium Backup to just free the service that includes that APK.
Its named: System updates 1_14_10_0
Just freeze that if you have TB and then restart and you are good to go. If you try to do System updates on your phones settings, "Activity is not exist this device" now pops up.

If you froze it, then you should get an error when you check for software updates. It means your phone will not automatically check for updates either.

Exactly, I was stating that a good way to check is to attempt to check for updates. Sorry if it came across as me thinking something was wrong.
Ooops, I should have also stated that getting the error is a good thing and not an indication that something is messed up
quick question i got the system updates 1_14_10_0 frozen in TiBu. But when I filter search update its comes up a third apk called configupdater5.1-17437 the permission on this apk is. Download files without user notification and run at start up. I've currently frozen this apk with no side effects that i can tell
I love the translation.

Sorry to bump a dead thread but I have System updates listed twice. I froze both and when I click the check for software updates, settings force close. Seems to be only on that setting. Is it normal though? Did anyone have it listed twice?
I have two listed and froze both, I'm not having any issues with force closing just getting the same toast notification that the service doesn't exist.
