Upgrading to GB on the DInc - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so I'm a noob and need a little bit of help. I just downloaded this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219407
Now, what do I do with it? Also, will I lose all of my data by flashing this onto my phone? (ie: my texts and my homescreens, etc?)
Thanks!

are you rooted? if not...
http://www.jonamerica.com/technology/updated-root-the-htc-droid-incredible/
once you have clockwork recovery and all that, boot into recovery, 'flash rom from sd card' (after putting the zip file on ur sd) and ur good.
If you dont want to lose everything, after root, download titanium backup and run that. you will be able to apply most of your stuff back on once you flash a new rom.

howbout some thnx -.-'

I'll give you some thanks for that succinct explanation of steps to take.
I'm ready to root with unrevoked - guessing I should use the "flash and recover" version instead of their "forever" one?
I installed Titanium backup, which I'll use after rooting to backup pretty much everything that it can grab.
Then, I'll use the SD card-based install that you mentioned.
I've read that I should do a full wipe before installing the OTA ROMs being offered - is another tool needed for that, please?
- ooofest

You've got it. The newest version of Unrevoked has made the "forever" one obsolete.
You will be able to perform all the wipes required from within Clockwork Recovery.
Also, make a clockwork backup (nandroid) as soon as you have root, so if you run into any problems flashing roms you have something to restore.

[Q] ESPRIMG.zip update in the Bootloader wipes phone?

I'm about to finish this rooting process to put a custom rom on my brothers phone, but I want to be sure he won't lose all of his data if I do the ESPRIMG.zip update...I'm just trying to play it safe before he hates me for losing all his data
If anyone can verify this for me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I don't want to mess this up if I can avoid it.
Using the exploid method, I got to the part where you get the # in the adb shell, indicating root. However, titanium backup and such apps would not yet run, so I had to continue to make the root permanent with full access(or so I understand), and have now found myself at this step. If this zip only enables us to flash clockwork without wiping all the data on the phone, that would be awesome. I just want to make sure that is true...I haven't seen the answer anywhere else. Thanks for the help guys!
I wouldn't think anything would be wiped until you flash a new rom or do a wipe yourself... but don't quote me on that... I've only rooted 3 devices and the Slide was back in December, haha. D:
Which leads me to a kind of on-topic question... How do people back up their stuff the first time around if they're not rooted? I'm sure it's something simple. I just kinda made a list of the stuff I had.
If it's something extraordinarily obvious, I'm sorry it's 5AM anddd... I should probably know anyways. xD

This is what I'm wondering. I've rooted a G1, G2, and nook color before (although the NC is completely automated and required no work really, as there was nothing to back up the first time around). On the G1, it was my first device obviously and I lost all my data when wiping and flashing a custom rom. In the G2 process, I was able to get apps like Ti Backup to run on the stock rom, so I was able to back up all my apps and data.
On this one, it's a bit different (at least for now), I want to know if performing that update in the bootloader will put an entirely different image on my phone, meaning I'd lose all the data that's currently on there.
It's not so much the apps, but all the application data that I'm worried about losing without warning him first...I don't want him to have to repeat all his work to get to the same spot he's currently at in angry birds or something
Its going to wipe the phone. How to back up data? Idk.

I just did this myself, so take a noob's word for what it's worth.
Yes it will wipe the phone IF you tell it to do the update. If you want to back up your phone you first need to put ClockworkMod Recovery on your SD card and name it simply update.zip. When you load into the boot loader (Vol down + Power) select "Recovery" then something about "Apply from SD: Update.zip" and you will get into ClockworkMod Recovery where you can then do a Nandroid back up of your phone.

It completely wipes the phone. It REPLACES SPL, radio, recovery, rom, etc with the factory spec so the phone will be exactly as it was when first pulled out of the box.
Contacts, calendar, etc should be backed up to google. Apps can be downloaded again from the market and should be auto restored on sign-in to google.
Personal settings and data like texts, call logs, etc are gone though unless you use a program like Titanium Backup to save them.
The other thing you could do is root the stock rom, make a nandroid backup before flashing a custom rom and then if he wants to go back all he has to do is restore the nandroid backup and unroot with all his data preserved.
All right this is what i was suspecting. Is there any way to run titanium backup on the stock rom without wiping it first?

What do you mean? Titanium Backup requires root. You can use it in your custom rom to backup everything you want, then restore, reroot, then download titanium backup again and restore the data from your sdcard. If that doesn't answer your question please elaborate on what you are trying to accomplish so that I can help.
Where are you now? What steps did you take to get there? Where are you trying to get to and why?
EDIT - I've had an mt3g and an mt4g but never an espresso so i'm slightly out of my element. I reread the first post and it appears you have root but for whatever reason titanium isn't granted root access. Do you have superuser permissions installed? It can be installed from the market as long as you have root access.
Once you have clockwork (or amon ra) recovery installed you can make a nandroid backup of his stock rom without rooting it, but carrying all the data over to the new rom will require an app such as titanium or mybackup (free 30 day trial) from the market.
Hope that helps.
I guess it WILL then!
Yeah, this was the first device I rooted, so I just sorta flew through it. I was glad that it got rooted and I could put a rom on, so the loss of data wasn't TOO big to me.
And I've lost Angry Birds like... 4 times now, haha.

I am aware of all of that.
What I've done is use the exploid method to root until you get to the "#" prompt in the adb shell, after toggling wifi and running ./exploid twice. Then to continue in order to flash a custom rom, I've got to perform the update from the bootloader with ESPRIMG.zip. All I'm asking is that since I do have root through the exploid method, can I run Titanium Backup BEFORE I flash a custom rom, since technically it is possible to gain root access before flashing custom roms. I tried installing the app but it could not properly gain the access it needed. I think this probably has something to do with no superuser app being installed either.
Does it make sense what I'm asking? Thanks guys.

Yeah I think so. I'll take a look at the root guide but if you have # in Terminal then you should have root. Try installing superuser and see what happens. Do you have a custom recovery installed yet? I think you'll need that to install superuser.
Why didn't you just try SuperOneClick? Much easier than all this.

The # in terminal disappears as soon as I try to exit, and whatever work you've done resets upon a reboot.
I don't have clockwork installed as of yet, because the guide says I've got to update the ESPRIMG.zip through the bootloader before I can do that. I'll try flashing clockwork first and installing superuser before I do anything else.
Does a one click root exist for the slide? I thought that it wasn't possible at this time. If that's the case I'm interested as long as it allows me to run Ti Backup and such and flash clockwork with s-off to do some backups before I go ahead and flash cyanogenmod. Thanks.
EDIT: As expected, can't flash clockwork update without flashing the ESPRIMG.zip update. If I can't run Titanium, it'd be nice to get a couple files out of /data/data before doing the wipe. I tried an adb pull which would not work from the /data partition. With the # prompt in terminal, I wanted to copy some of these files, but the "cp" command doesn't seem to work in terminal, but "mv" and "rm" do. Any way to copy files from within the adb shell? If I could move them to the SD card it would be nice.

[Q] Clockwork Recovery Question On Stock Rom

Hey, this may seem like a silly question but i would rather ask it than brick my device.
I have rooted and s-off my stock rom, i have installed all my apps and settings and ive got it just the way i like it. i have created a nandroid backup using clockwork mod.
I now want to try Gingervillian rom, ive got titanium backup to install all the apps back and that but what i want to know is:
Will i be able to restore my stock rom from the nandroid backup with all my apps and setting in tact, even though s-off is set and its rooted. i know a read somewhere that flashing a stock rom on a phone with s-off can semi-brick it... so will clockwork recovery do the same?
When you make a 'nandroid' backup via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, it makes essentially a carbon copy of the current setup of your ROM (not your radio, S-Off status, etc.). Literally everything is perfectly as you have it now. It just like doing a full HDD backup of your computer.
When you restore this backup, it simply brings back your ROM from exactly how it was. There is no effect on your root or S-off, or your radio.
So, if you do a nandroid backup, then wipe the device and flash another ROM i.e. Gingervillain, and make a nandroid of that, you can then freely switch back and forth between the 2 (or more) recoveries via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, with no issues.
The issues with bricking as you're referring to are if you for some reason try to somehow flash a non-rooted ROM, which would most definitely cause issues. In order to get back your phone to stock-stock-stock-stock (unroot and S-on), you will need to follow unroot instructions and flash an official unrooted RUU/PC10IMG.zip to get back to everything as it came out of the box.
Hope this helps, let me know if I need to clarify.
thank you very much matey much appreciated!!

HELP! Boot loop on stock ROM

Hi guys!
I am sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, but I searched pretty thoroughly and I couldn't find a solution
I am trying to S-OFF an HTC Desire for a friend of mine and install CyanogenMod using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084.
We rooted the phone without any issues, but before going through Alpharev I decided to make a nandroid backup through the phone's original recovery image (just as advised on Alpharev's site: "We try to leave the current ROM and datastructures completely intact. It is, however, advised to ALWAYS nandroid backup your phone before you run this procedure.
You will then always have a correct/current backup to fall back on in case something breaks."). So I just went into the Backup and Recovery menu and I chose backup.
Unfortunately after backing up, the phone went into a boot loop. We tried taking-out the battery and even doing a hard reset but nothing helped. Eventually we flashed the original RUU from O2 (it's an O2 Germany phone) and this fixed the issue.
I am a bit concerned since I wasn't able to find anyone who had the same problem and it is a bit weird that the phone should go into a boot loop without even installing another ROM or anything - just trying to do a backup of the stock ROM. I am thus a bit hesitant to go on with the S-OFF...
Any help would be deeply appreciated!
Well, first of all, you don't need to be S-Off to install CyanogenMod7. Only root. Usually, people do S-Off so they can change the Boot Splash image.
Make a Gold Card for your SD. Some Desire's need it, some don't. Better safe than sorry.
Secondly, after root, I would goto the market and install ROM Manager. Then flash to the latest Clockwork Recovery.
Then,I would make sure I have a recent Recovery image (NandBackup)
Download Gapps.zip to the root of the SD.
Download the CyanogenMod7 to the root of the SD, boot phone to recovery, Wipe cache memory, also goto Advanced and wipe the Delvik memory.
Then Install from SD, do the CM7, then after it finishes, Select Install from SD again, and install the Gapps.zip
Why your backup failed, who knows. I suppose you were using Unrevoked?
Thanks! Do you know why the boot loop could happen?

I suppose, there was some code that didn't get deleted due to the rooting process, if you used unrevoked. Although it rarely happens, sometimes it does.
Or maybe it didn't like some Application. Who knows. All it takes, is 1 peice of bad code.
With AlphaRev, although many use it, I believe it changes your bootloader code.
And, you can sometimes have problems as well.
But follow the steps I mentioned, and you should be ok.
Just make sure you create and use the Gold Card first.
The boot loop is a common issue with the first nandroid. All you had to do was restore the nandroid you just made.

Right - I thought about that, but then I was hesitant, because I figured if it went into a boot loop then it probably did not create the backup image properly... So can I still restore the backup image now? It is saved on the sdcard so it should be intact after the RUU, right?
It "should be", but, one can only assume so.
Typically, I make a couple of backups each week. One never knows. Yeah, it will tell you successsful. but, better safe than sorry.

Revert to old clockwork mod with Rom Manager

Hey. I just rooted my phone and I am trying to flash some things but I can't do so anymore because my version of clockwork MOD no longer supports Amend, I believe it is...
SO, I read that I need to revert to an older Clockwork Mod recover ROM to be able to flash these items
There is an option in Rom manager to go back to the 2.5.0.7 and I currently have 3.0.0.5. Is this safe?
My question is, if I have done a nandroid backup, I fear that messing with this clockwork mod thing will erase everything and not let me have the options to recover stuff...and if something screws up, how could I recover my nandroid backup. Do I need to have a functioning clockwork mod to do this, just in case downgrading messes this up?
I hope this makes sense! I guess I am just wondering if downgrading to a prior vesion of cockwork mod will mess my life up.
Thanks
Mike
You can't use rom manager to downgrade, as they are not for the evo.
http://www.mediafire.com/?gijd69zb5222w
Download the version on want, just make sure to rename it so it only says PC36IMG, place on the root of your sd card, boot into the bootloader, then apply update.
Thank you for your response. This won't mess my phone up so that I can't boot in to the recover mod? I am thinking it would be safe otherwise you wouldn't have recommended it.
I understand about renaming the file...when it goes through it's boot up thing, will it simply ask me to apply the update?
Thanks
Mike

[Q] 4.4.4 rooted with TWRP and S-Off but still on stock ROM

I am very new to rooting etc, but managed to root my HTC One M8 Developer Edition 4.4.4 and flash TWRP Recovery with the help of the guides in this forum. Also got S-off with Sunshine. I have not installed any custom ROM and still have stock
My question is - will I still receive OTA's (if and when HTC releases lollipop for the Developer Edition?
You can't take an OTA with a non-stock recovery. It will download, but not install.
Root, on the other hand, hasn't typically caused a problem. (though you almost invariably lose root in the process)
Being S-OFF and actually already being Dev edition all you need is to have a stock backup the way it is before you flash a ROM and when the time comes just wipe from whatever ROM you've chosen and restore the backup along with flash your stock recovery.
Or if you want less steps just download the bone stock no root, stock recovery RUU and rename it to "0P6BIMG.zip" and place it in the root of your external sdcard.
Boot into hboot and when it asks what you want to do just press up ,give it plenty of time to flash and when it finishes just reboot and it will be stock just the way it came out of the box only it will still be bootlooader unlocked and S-OFF
Thanks
Thanks jball and jshamlet

OK. I have gone through several guides and posts but am still confused. I had installed TWRP recovery and before rooting had taken a backup of apps, data and system. After rooting I have downloaded several paid apps including Titanium Backup. If I restore from the backup that I had made, these apps will not be available right?. Also I have paid apps running off my SD Card. These would not have been included in the backup and also might not be available?
Is there anyway of flashing stock recovery alone. WIll be grateful for any guidance or link to other posts.
Thanks & Regards

After flashing a ROM I do the out of box setup and allow Google to restore what apps I normally use,I haven't used titanium backup sense my S2 days cause it's a tossup that it even works right at any given time in my opinion.
As far as recovery goes
Download and install "Flashify" from the playstore and find the stock
recovery.img file.
After installing Flashify go ahead and open the app, give root permission and choose recovery image, now choose file and navigate with whatever root explorer you use and choose the stock recovery.img you downloaded and tap "yup" and it will flash it for you.

Flashing a recovery in fastboot or with Flashify will do just that: flash a recovery to the recovery partition. Nothing else changes.
Root lives on /system. So as long as you don't flash a non-rooted stock rom you will keep root.
Your paid apps are yours. If you wipe them you can just reinstall them from the PS. If you paid for a root app like TiBu and you don't have root anymore, you still own it but it's not very useful...
You have apps on your external SD??? That is so ICS - don't know if they have libs or app data stored on internal anyway, but let's say you nandroid your current installation, take out your SD card, then wipe everything and install new firmware, recovery and rom. You should still be able to restore just your data partition from the nandroid, re-insert your SD and be good as gold.
As long as your new rom can live with the restored /data that is....
But seriously: Move data to external and install apps to internal - so much easier to manage....
Oh, and once S-off you're always S-off unless you run the code to S-on again. Not even flashing RUU will turn you S-on automatically.
