Same thing happened to me though mine was due to me dropping my phone. I would give HTC a call in the first instance and try and get it fixed for free under warranty
My phone is rooted and has a custom rom so i am able to bypass this issue by having the phone wake on track ball and i have downloaded a few apps
screen off and lock (this is then mapped to long press on the search key
quick boot (to restart the phone, this requires root access to work)
after a few hours you get used to the alternative way to switch the screen on and off.

I had the same problem with the desire HD, happened suddenly installed nolock as a tempory solution, and was going to take it in under warranty for repair. It is caused by a stuck power button. Heres how I fixed mine. As a last resort, I removed the battery sim card cover and battery cover so that all I was holding was the Ali uni body section. with my finger and thumb I began flicking the chrome button with my nail, as if you were flicking a pea accross the table, after about 30 seconds of flicking the little chrome button popped out slightly, when holding it by your ear and pressing it you can now hear a click. Maybe a dust particle or something from my pocket caused mine not sure, but it was moisture or software related. Hope this helps someone who maybe hasthe same problem.
Paul.
i'd say give htc a call
hope u find a solution soon..

Ive had this issue for over a week now. Often when I need my phone and turn it on from the Power/On button at the top, the screen stays black, it doesnt turn on. I can see the bottom hardware buttons light up and the touchscreen seems to work, I can feel the haptic feedback when pressing the screen... Assume its a connection issue - anyone had the same problem?
I have the same issue, but just turn the lock on again (hardware buttons turn off) and unlock the phone, and then the screen comes on.
Help!
This has gone really bad now! Ive tried find help on the net, but nothing so far!
I have removed the SD card, Sim. Tried with and without. I have hard and soft reset the Desire severeal times. It works well for a while, but the problem kicks in sooner or later.
Pressing the power button the buttons light up, the screen vibrates but its black, not turning on. I tried to unlock it, but without any help.
Hate to take it to T-Mob and be without a phone for another 2 weeks...
Im trying to make a hard reset by pressing the volume down + power (also the alternate press home and back and then Power). Even this is not working... is it totally bricked now?
With the Monday Bankholiday, will be ages before I get my Desire back. Awww!!
If anyone has any idea how to help, appreciate it alot!

I had the same problem with mine but in my case I dropped it on the floor but the screen hadn't any visible problem and the buttons below worked fine and the notification LED told that it worked. I sent it back to HTC and they replaced the screen under warranty. Tell us if you found another solution.
Regards, vascer.

Hey guys, I'm new here - so Hi! *Waves*
I've searched and couldn't really see anything like my issue, so thought I'd post:
Having some weird issues with my HTC desire... earlier this morning I heard my phone randomly restart (was just sitting beside my bed) and for some reason it started in safe mode.
The power button wouldn't work so I could turn off / restart. So I removed the battery and put it back in, the phone went to the white screen with Hboot on it.
The Up / Down buttons do not work so I can't select anything, neither does the power button.
Everytime the phone boots up not it goes straight to hboot. I don't press anything, it just automatically starts when the battery is in and I can't do anything or even turn it off.
Now it has decided not to power back on - mainboard stuffed maybe?
Any ideas? :s

check whether you power/volume up/down buttons are stuck inside as if it is pressed.
Are you rooted and s-off? what did you do to your mobile before this issue?
is your SD card working properly? try to post the screenshot of your phone screen with that issue you are trying to explain
sounds like you none working up/down buttons are actuallly but stuck in the down position taking you to hboot on power up. need to free them

you really had made detailed trouble shooting guide (came to know from your signature). most of the issues encountered by the users are there. keep it up.

Hi i m having the same problems here with my desire dunno if its a bit late but
have you managed to fix your desire is not could you try some thing when it loads to HBoot try pressing all of the lower buttons on the desire (home menu track pad back and search) and see if you have any response because once doing this for a few seconds in a random order frantically pressing them my desire had response but would only move up the list? cheers
Hello,
Bad luck my powerbutton of my Desire Z left me alone on a week trip to Germany, it keeps pressed all the time.. I found this out by checking the bootloader, I couldn't use anything in it. also when I remove the battery and turn it back in it starts by itself. when Its loaded into the os(Gen.Y Sense 4.0) it makes a screenshot when I press the home button(normal sc button is POWER + home). Now I rather had the powerbutton not to function then keeping it pressed, I get the countdown to keep holding the powerbutton till it restarts, which keeps staying on 1 second. Is anyone familiar with this problem? I did manage to get the button responding by pushing it very hard.. But after 20 seconds or so, it keeps pressed again.. I want to know if this is fixed easily, since I'm not capable of tools to open it up... I want to get the problem out.. I hope someone can help me out..
Thanks in advance!

I have same problem on my old Desire, now either get the power button fixed from service center or flash some custom rom/mod which enables track pad wake, I am using custom rom and can wake phone using track pad and its working just fine from last 2-3 months.

sounds like a hardware issue. If you have the tools, take the phone apart and make sure the lead is touching the button sensor.....It may have ripped or moved out of place I would guess.....
Hi guys.
So i managed to get my desire wet/damp and whilst it still works it has developed 3 issues:
1) The weirdest of all - the phone wont go into standby, as soon as you press the power button or let it timeout the screen goes off and they instantly turns back on to the lock screen. If i leave it, it will timeout again on lockscreen and come back on, it does this forever. I have done factory resets etc, all the same. Weird right. As i result i would like to reflash the mod and see if that fixed it as assuming its software related (somehow).
2) Volume keys do not work - think means i had issues getting into recovery. Finally found a widget to do it and then....
3) Trackpad does not work in recovery so i cannot re-flash or try any new rom to see if that fixed (1)
Proper catch 22
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Bridgstfer
Install 4ext touch recovery.
Update after installing touch recovery
OK I HAVE AN UPDATE:
The plot thickens but i have managed to S-OFF my Desire and eventually install Clockworkmod Touch which obviously doesn't require me to use the trackpad button so I was able to use Recovery. I wiped the phone and tried reflashing the ROM i had been using (Insertcoin) but this made no difference, the phone still keeps waking up immediately that it goes to sleep (either with power button or by sleeping timeout).
So i decided to install a completely different ROM (CM10_VJ_4.1.2_v3.0) and this installed fine. Now the phone will go to sleep and stay asleep if I press the power button. Problem solved I thought!
Now when the phone is asleep 50% of the time, trying to wake it with the power button will cause it to reset immediately and goto the white HTC screen. When it restarted it sits on the unlock screen and keeps timing out, screen goes off, then immediately on again - weird. If i unlock and lock with power button it will behave. For some reason the Search key will wake the phone every time no issues. Only the power key to unlock causes it to reset. Phone is sleeping according to Battery info.
Any other suggestions for what I could try. Could this possibly be something hardware related now? If there a way i can log the key presses or reason it wakes/resets?
Any help really appreciated, the phone is pretty unusable with this reset issue now.
THanks
Bridgstfer
theres a few videos on youtube, if it was me i would take the phone apart and clean all round the buttons. mite solve it. But as it got wet, the water could of damaged something in around the trackpad r power button, hense always waking the phone.

Thanks mate. So i tried this and installed CM7 today and have discovered something. As i said above the volume down button doesn't work and the volume up only works with some persuasion. Once i installed CM7 the problem where I lock phone with power key and it instantly wakes up now persists (on the JB rom it at least stayed asleep but reset if power button was pressed again).
However whe i changed the display timeout to 15seconds i watched as it timed out and instantly woke then noticed the volume would increment down one notch each it woke up again. This leads me to think that rather then the volume down not working at all it is actually stuck down permanently and could be causing the issue here. Is there any way I can find out if this is the case and disable the volume keys through software or do i need to open up the phone and disconnect it?
Thanks for any help - i think we are getting there!
Bridgstfer
I actually worked out that the trackpad is being pressed down constantly too because on CM7 when i disable trackpad to wake the phone actually stays asleep. Stil the phone resets if i try to wake with power button though, must be something to do with the button combo being held down.
Is there any way to disable both volume and trackpad buttons at the kernal/system level?
Tried button remapper but does not allow to remap the trackpad press.
With a file explorer, go to
system>usr>keylayout and modify bravo-keypad.kl.
I'm just back from holiday where my Desire had a ten-minute swim in sea water!
Naturally it was stone dead when I remembered it was in my pocket as I waded across an inlet which was supposed to be ankle- deep but was over 1.5 metres in places
I thought there was no point in drying it out without first removing all salt so (minus battery and cards) held it under a tap for several minutes then left it to soak in tap water in the sink for 30 minutes.
I then dried it over gentle heat for a few days then tried the battery. The vibrator ran continually and the white LED flashed randomly but nothing else. After another two days drying it booted - but only into Fastboot and the vol switch didn't move the cursor. But after another two days - it worked almost perfectly! The vibrator is dead and the screen a bit streaky, but all the other sensors work just fine and it's quite useable.
I had been logging the hike using My Tracks and it actually shows the course going a short way into the sea.
do you have an assurance or warranty?
if yes-->change phone.

Thanks for this. I actually got an app that let you remap the keys but it does not let you do anything to the trackpad click button (which is now the one stuck down). See photo of whats in my bravo-keypad.kl file here:

Any other way i can disable the trackpad completely. Perhaps at the kernel level?
Thanks
