i have never seen a good software solution to this. i have also wondered the same thing.
as bad nand blocks can indicate possible hardware failure, the most common solution i've seen is for people return their device.
sorry its not a great solution, but its the only one i'm aware of. if anybody knows of a software solution to verify the nand blocks are bad, or a method to repair them, that would be very interesting to learn about.
THANKS i FIGURED AND THATS WHAT i DID

What did you tell them in order to obtain a new device? I have the same problem with my non-refurb replacement 4G and am unable to use Revo because of it.
I am also looking for an excuse to take my evo back, I've got a bad nand, too. Any ideas?

Well, most bad esn's are that way for a reason and a very good reason. I have heard of clearing the esn before but I think it has to actually be done through the carrier. I'm not 100% sure on that but if I remember correctly that was the only way. If you came across this phone by "accident" you might go in to a store with it and see what they say. I've returned phones before and got discounts and credits.

Shhhhh....not supposed to ask that.
That has to be done by someone at Sprint
As some else said why is it bad, is it stolen? If it is I would return it to Sprint so the rightful owner can have their phone.

Thank you all for your responses I got this evo since I lost it and report it lost and few weeks later I found it in my aunts house so now I have two the one I'm using and this one which is reported lost aka bad esn

If you used insurance they may not have reported to sprint. It may not be bad.
In other country carriers work with the bad esn?

If you elaborate a little more, someone will probably be able to help you.
It sounds a little like insurance fraud but I guess if you made your claim and everything is done not Muvh u can do
But ur old phone will have a bad esn u won't be able to use it on sprints network

Mine just broke. -_-
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I think it's not possible, or at least that's what the Sprint store told me. They just replaced my phone, then when I gave them the broken one, they stripped it down for parts.
There was someone on here trying to fix theirs, but it was really difficult & I don't know if they ever fixed it.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
It is possible but requires serious micro soldering skills , good (think commercial) soldering equipment and a magnifier with lights. The contact points are smaller than what you would find on IC's on a motherboard.
Thanks for the info guys.
Plainjane, was your evo rooted when you took it for repair. I'm not sure they will repair mine. It's rooted and I know there's a way to unroot but I don't have the phone insurance.

It'd be best to unroot it. And if they swap it [which they should] I think you'll be okay.
I need information in activating a new phone on the Airave line and I'm wondering if anyone can help. I know that some Radio Shack reps have had sucess doing. Please PM me.
Thanks in advance...

Well, I heard through XDA that some people have had luck getting their phones upgraded via their Airave line on their family account. The line must be upgrade-eligible (login to your account and see if there's a message on that line saying you're eligible for $150 off).
I don't know what the steps are, but I know there are some extra steps needed to get this done. Apparently it is a PITA, but it does work. I'd like to do this so I can can get a second GS3 for my mother as well (her EVO OG is just not holding up well).
I called the local Radio Shack and they said they didn't know about it. I just need someone to guide me to the right store to get it done.
So you want RadioShack employee to explain a Sprint service in depth? Good luck. Lol

Upgrading an airave account isn't fraud.
It can also be upgraded by calling sprint and talking to them.

Fraud? Exaggerating a bit don't you think? Do you think Sprint hasn't corrected this issue so they can test their customers ethics? It's been around for years now buddy. Many people have done so. I just learned that Best Buy can do it too.
Fraud is more accurately associated wih other things that is found in these forums; such as free Wifi tethering, PRL hacking, etc. Acivating your phone on an Airave line that is left open by Sprint is not fraud, it's a loophole.
Anyways, what happens after the phone is activated on that line? Can I just transfer the device to my number? I don't want to be stuck with the $19.99 additional line fee though.

Your best bet is to just walk into the radio shack and try it. See if they are willing to spend the time to try and get you that upgrade. I did it with mine but I honestly can't remember all the details. I know there are no charges. Make sure you write down all the numbers from your Airave and bring them with you. I think I remember them needing the numbers that are similar to the esn on a phone. Good luck!

follow your own advice. those 2 links were to THREADS that you started regarding this same exact thing. why are you so hard-up for a new phone??? just go buy one
and considering one was already locked... reported this one as it's the exact same thing
Tell them that you will buy their accessories (screen protector and a case) and they will try their best helping you.

I found someone selling a excellent condition GSM Gnex here in the U.S. He says it has issues keeping a signal. I have read on here and other places that it is a fairly common problem. I have also read of people claiming to fix it but I find many different things regarding different countries radios, etc. Keeping in mind I have not rooted a phone before, however I am some what literate to tech things. Should I buy this phone? Is there actually a fix? I am suppose to do the deal fairly soon. Thanks in advance
200 is a good deal .... I probably would go for it lol I think u could probably get your money back reselling if it stumps u on signal issue.

Maybe flashing a new raadio could fix this issue .. maybe u have to root of course but use the nexus root toolkit from wugfresh its really easy and new radio if u want i can post a link here
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I doubt its a hardware problem... Anything software/firmware/radio can be changed. If its not physically broken than it's just user error messing things up and dropping signal. If you're willing to troubleshoot it and flash new firmware it's probably a good deal.

Thanks again for the info.
Im brand new to Android with only using a HTC Amaze for the last week or so. Got the GNex Saturday. The phone is already rooted so I followed instructions found on this site and installed bigxie_maguro_JRN84D_v2-signed.zip so I could have JB. I then flashed the Radio you suggested.
I have Simple Mobile which I was using with my other phone (HTC Amaze) and never had problems. With the GNex, in my house I get a pretty good consistent signal. When I drive around my city I completely loose service for blocks in many places I never had a problem before with my other phone (HTC Amaze). In some places I can go to one end of a room and have no service and walk to the other end and have service. Im now at work where I never had problems with my Amaze and I have no service at all with this phone.
I have been doing some reading and notice most complain of signal lose being attached to sleep but this is not the case with me. When driving I kept it awake and would just watch it go to no service for blocks and them come back. Also many complain of the signal being just "weaker" then other phones they used but I am getting NO signal any many places that where find before.
I tried the clear cache trick suggested in one post but still have the same problem. I also tried the GetRiL program which says everything is fine as far as my radio set up. Im showing a baseband of l9250XXLF1. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. I love this phone otherwise and would really like to use it.
I have a nexus and my father has a HTC rezound. He is always at least 10DBM stronger, most of the time more. It's been that way with every Samsung phone I've owned (charge and fascinate) Samsung's radios are just weaker apparently. Motorola is stronger than HTC but not by much.
