Hardware or software fault? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, I am on holiday right now and having some trouble with my DHD. I have limited internet and can't find an awnser. Last night my phone rebooted while using the cam in whatsapp. It now boots in hboot and its stuck there. It doesn't respond to pressing any buttons. I managed to boot the device with Adb by usb using the Adb -d reboot command while connected to my laptop. It boots in save mode and only my volume down key doesn't respond.
Did some additional tests.
Booted in (clockwork) recovery (using Adb) and did the key test and it also didn't respond to the volume down key. (The vol down key feels like there is nothing wrong with it)
Booting with vol up key pressed the phone vibtates four times and then the green light lites. Screen stays off. Don't know if this is normal behavior.
Booting with vol down also gives unresponsive hboot screen.
Although it looks like there is something wrong with the DHDs internals I just wonder if there is a small change its software related and can be fixed. (At home I would just try, but that's to risky now because I need my phone and in save mode I can use al the basic stuf) Maybe some of you guys have similar experiences.
Thanks.

I think it's hardware, you can flash build 1.32. That should sort any software issue, then start over again.

Use adb to boot into recovery. Full wipe:flash new rom from zip.
not a backup.
This is a strange problem but if you cant boot without using adb you need to flash an ruu to re-write the boot img.

I remember reading such issue back in this forum and it turns out to be a stuck volume down contact. What the person did was that he kept pressing volume down until it started working again and these weird issues were gone (I think he also blow up some air where the rocker is iirc)
Try this and hope it helps.

Yes it seems like a stuck volume button. The volume button on this phone is the flimsiest thing I've ever set eyes on. Try what Naailalzuhir said above, that should fix it.

Been pressing all night. No luck yet

Can anyone test holding the volume down button (all the time) while turning on the device. Can you browse through the hboot menu with vol up? (still holding the vol down button)

I've had this problem with the volume up button not working and sticking,
No Hboot or clockwork.
Answer was to remove the plastic cover which sits above the volume controls.
This will void your warranty but should work.
You will have to remove the black ribbon which goes to the volume control buttons.
That will solve the boot issue.
You will find that you can't use clockwork from boot anymore.
You will have install a program called 4EXT Recovery.
Put that in your SD card and use Rom Manager to install.
Works the same as clockwork mod but you use the power button and the home and return keys.
Good luck

[q] stuck in safe mode

Hi, have just flashed a new radio and RIL using CWM recovery and phone has somehow put itself into SAFE MODE . Does anyone have any idea how to get it back out of this? Have rebooted, pulled battery and tried googling for a solution but not having any luck.
have you tried to boot recovery? switch off hold vol down and power. if that doesn't work then try flashing an RUU.Sounds like it may be bricked.
Good luck

After a couple of hours of trying it finally came back to normal after about the tenth reboot. Didnt realise the HD had a safe mode and no idea how I managed to put it into it but its all good now thankfully . Phone still operates as normal when in safe mode but only allows certain apps to operate and shows a little transparent box on bottom left corner of screen with SAFE MODE always showing.
Wish I knew some more info on it if it happens again
I think you get into safe mode by holding the Volume Down button while powering on. Is it possible that you accidentally pressed Volume Down while booting?
For record I couldn't get into safe mode on my phone, but I'm not sure if CM7 supports it or not.
I dont think I did, last button I pushed was power to reboot system back out of CWM after flashing a new RIL. If I had pushed volume down surely that would have taken me into the phones recovery but it booted up as normal and showed me the onscreen SAFE MODE symbol. Hopefully doesnt happen again because there isnt much info on getting rid of it
My previous post is not so clear. I meant pressing Volume Down after the phone starts to power on, not at the same time as pressing Power. Anyway it sounds like you didn't do that...

[Q] Stuck in bootloader, anyone help?!

Whats happened is my phone was running abit slow earlier and the volume keys were not working with the music player so i decided to restart it. Now whenever i boot the phone up it boots straight into bootloader and it doesnt respond to both volume keys and the power button. The only way i can switch it off is by removing the battery.
I have tried booting the phone into recovery using adb, and i get the error device not found. Ive also tried booting it and holding the power button down but it still again boots into bootloader.
I seriously need to fix the phone as its got info stored thats important, so whoever gives steps that bring the phone back to life, Ill be donating money to them.
Thanks
You can't use adb but fastboot.
try to find some tuto on google. You can flash all with fastboot.
Sorry I'm not familiar enough to help more, just an idea.
If can boot fastboot can try to install a new recovery image
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/desire_hd_installing_roms
If its going straight to hboot with no help from you(ie not pressing button combo) the your volume key is probably stuck. Take off the battery cover and GENTLY try to loosen the volume rocker to get it unstuck
Do you have CWM?

[Q] Stuck in a boot loop with HTC diagnostic area (dead volume down rocker)

Hey guys
I'm running MrGarak's fantastic MIUI rom however I've found that the kernel is booting my phone into that white HTC diagnostic screen by default. Unfortunately my volume down button is dead and so I can't navigate the menu; the only way I can boot my phone at the moment is to boot it connected via USB as that makes it boot to Recovery and I can reboot from there.
Any ideas? I think this and another rom I tried both used LordMUE's kernel, could that be the reason the boot preferences don't default to just booting the OS?
Any help and/or pointers would be greatly appreciated
So you can access bootloader and recovery!
So just flash another kernel. What's your problem?
Put a zip on your SD (with a SD reader or ADB pull), then go in recovery, navigate with the 4 keys under the screen (or vol+ and power)... and flash.
What is strange for me is that it seems to happen sudenly... so how do ou know it's the kernel. Anyway...
I have clockwork recovery, and can navigate it using the soft keys (home menu etc). You should also he able to use the vol up key to get to the bottom of the list, (depending on the recovery you're using I suppose)

Unfortunately it boots into the white HTC area (dunno what it's called). The one where you can see if your phone is S-OFF or not.
Also, I'm not sure what is to blame... but I've only just recently noticed that my phone cold boots this way so I assumed it was a recent rom that I applied. Will test this theory later.
Sounds to me like your volume down button is stuck in.
Definitely not a ROM issue, as it has nothing to do with the bootloader.

Hey, i had this issue like a month ago. You can check my previous threads. It's hardware I'm 100% sure. Basically if you're in warranty you need to flash the stock rom with S-On so you can get a new phone. You can get it to boot but it's really a pain. You have to play with the volume up when first turning on your phone. It took me about an hour. Then when it boots you'll be in a "Safe Mode" (no clue whats limited all seemed fine to me). Then do your backup if you wish.
Also note: Flashing the S-On rom is a PAIN, took me about 2-3 hours of rebooting, holding vol up, tapping vol up, to get it to boot right, but with patients you'll get it to go.
Good luck to ya.

Ah, I'm definitely beyond warranty. The thought of vol+down being stuck down makes a lot of sense!
I'll just take it to one of the dodgy Asian repair shops, if it's a hardware issue I'm sure they'll know what to do.
Cheers for your help everyone!

Hard Bricked. Help

Seems I have now flashed wrong bootlader and my phone wont turn on. When attempting to start it just powers the screen for a millisecond and repeas this over infinitum.
Is the anyway to fix it please.
What exactly did you do before? How did you flash the bootloader?
put it onto an sd goldcard and loaded it up. My phone wont turn on. I can hold vol up and down simultaneously with a tap of the power button, then i get 5 vibrations.
If I hold vol up and tap power i get 3 vibrations from the phone.
Is the still hope for me yet. Please help.

I seems like it's got into a Qualcomm diagnostics mode, hence the 3 vibrations.

think im going to buy one of ebay with damaged screen, take M/B out and resell the leftovers

Is my M8 bricked?

Ok folks, normally I figure these things out but this one has me a bit concerned.
I was in ViperROM HUB and installed a font package, it needed to restart in recovery to install, so I allowed it. I turned to my computer and when I next looked at my phone the screen is off and refuses to come on. When depress the power button I get a vibration feedback but the screen won't come on. I tried VOL DOWN and POWER but nothing is happening. Im gonna let the battery run dead and see if that will resolve it.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before?

Hey!
I dont think its bricked.
Ghost helped me out with my problem, see below solution.
Try holding POWER + VOLUME UP for 20 seconds and it should restart.
However my case was different I was stuck in HTC logo screen and no way to restart.
On the M8 it is Power and Vol Up to perform a "battery pull".

Thanks grega_slo and gaiden0000 for the quick response and spot on advice.
I did that before but it didn't work, it works now…guess I didn't hold VOL UP long enough.
Yeah I didn`t know about VOLUP either
It scared the crap out of me when I S-OFFed the device and was stuck haha

Put the usb cable in then press vol up and power until it restarts. As soon as you hear the ding on your pc press and hold vol down and power, you should then boot into hboot MENU.

never seem to hear a 'ding' or any other sound but no matter how I time it - power/vol up then power/vol down still results in htc splash then just black. Phone was quite warm (not quite hot) when I went to bed last night and this morning battery was at "0". When I first plugged it in and pushed the power button it alternated from the battery charging display to the TWRP locked screen but I couldn't seem to get it to stay on the TWRP screen no matter what I did. Now that I've used power/vol up I don't seem to get the battery or TWRP. just black or when trying power/vol up I get the splash. Power/vol down gives nothing - just black
EDIT: Just tried - let battery go dead. Plug in to computer hold power/vol down. Screen goes from battery icon to blank and back to battery icon.
EDIT: Pulled and reformatted sd card in Evo 4g LTE. Retried fastboot command still just shows "waiting for device". Even tried adb reboot bootloader and reply "device not found"
Could I use adb to reflash ruu? If so would the command be adb flash (filename)
Was beginning to lose hope of ever fixing this but a HUGE shout out to Simer03 who provided the critical piece of information - namely - add a ROM zip to your sd card. Hope nobody else ever has this problem but just in case
Post #4 here
Nothing is going to work unless you can either enter the boot loader or boot into the os.
You should still be able to access hboot unless that is corrupt. At the very least you need to hear the ding on your pc so you know the pc has recognized your device is connected.
Try again with vol up and power, hold until it reboots you should then hear that ding. If not check you have the necessary usb drivers installed on your pc or try a different usb cable.
