High AOS, cell standby and idle on omfgb? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been browsing these forums for a long time since I owned a hero and flashing roms and stuff is not new to me so I understand the basic functions quite well.
My question is, is there anything I can do to lower these usages using aosp roms? So far using the latest omfgb nightly, my battery has been qoing quite well(13 total hours but that's with a mix of heavy use) using tiamat 3.3.7 SBC kernel with no undervolting or overclocking using the smartass scale. But I feel it could be better without such high usage. After a fresh charge, my cell standby and idle are about 50/50. The only other thing I can think of doing is turning off the proximity sensors(but I can't find the zip). Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: I am on HW003 and all the latest radios and pri. I am not sure about the NV but as soon as I find the latest one I will be sure to flash it and update any changes

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App

Don't worry so much. Your battery has to be used some way, and after 13 hours that's just what uses it most. It isn't to say that they are using too much and you need to fix it, because your battery can only last so long without UVing and such. You could put your phone in airplane mode, but that is pointless.

Now after a few days running this rom battery life seems to be decreasing even though nothing changes with the battery use. Keep in mind I I only got 13 hours with 8 hours of my phone being completely idle(gotta sleep sometime lol). I ran Pandora for an hour then sent texts here and there throughout the day until it died. Never used GPS. For some reason it doesn't matter what rom I use, battery usually drains at the same rate as described. No matter what tweaks I make to try and increase it

Rom and kernel help!!!

I'm in a dilemma! For the last week I've been hunting around to find the right combination of Kernels and Roms. Natively I'm a CM ASOP man. But I've tried everything from CM to MIUI to Ava to Mym. None of the roms are giving a decent amount of battery life. I've tried several combinations of Kernels also. My battery life has been as terrible as 3 hours. I'm talking about losing a percent every minute!
I didn't buy an extended battery. But I have tried a brand new regular battery to make sure that I didn't have a bad battery. Both batteries have the same results under all combinations of Kernels and Roms.
I've seen members braggin on having 12 to 18th hours of life under heavy use! How is that possible!? Lol! I know it has to do with device, kernel, rom combinations.
Can the awsome members of the GREAT Xda please help me out? Point me in the right direction. fyi: I have a ver 003 device and also I don't overclock much at all but I underclock to try and save a lil juice!
Thanks in advanced!

No matter what rom/kernel combination I run I get really ****ty battery life with the stock red HTC battery. For me personally investing the $70 or so for the Seidio extended battery on Amazon was worthwhile. I also purchased their wall charger as well.
I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass and say that the battery last 2 days with heavy use because thats BS. However, with heavy use (running emulators, gmail sync, occasional bluetooth for wii mote, texting, web browsing, etc) I can get through a 9 hour work day with a lil life to spare.
At least go on amazon and get a1800 mah battery. They are cheap but goood.

I just bought another stock battery and a wall charger, I keep the spare in my wallet and battery life is a non issue now.
Check out batteryboss.org before buying an aftermarket one though, most of them are rips offs.
I'm not sure about rip offs on amazon but certainly ebay..i bought two batteries w/a charger for $25..and a third one since my oem battery took a bath, fully charged.

I'm going to research some better batteries. I appreciate the intel. But my thing is I know I can get a few more hours of battery time with a simple kernel modification. Loosing 1% a minute is unheard of lol. Like now: I had 100% when I started this reply and I'm officially at 95% as I press Submit lol! Terrible

You should see if you can get a replacement battery from sprint. I am using CM7 nightly 24, and can easily sustain 24+ hours with the OEM red battery.
Everyone will have different results even with the same rom/kernel, however the drain that your experiencing does sound like your battery might be going bad.

I see your stats and that sh*t is wicked! I used CM7 and that one drains the quickest lol.... before I cash out on a new extended battery where's an abundant source of Kernels? I've tried three and I wanted to do a little process of elimination before I pull out my visa lol

There aren't very many CM7 kernel's available yet, so few that I can't even begin to tell you where to start looking, for Sense roms though, search for Netarchy those kernels work really well.
I see... I appreciate that! Imma give Mym a try with a few of them Kernels. Thanks again for the help
And what exactly is the Kernel that you are using!? Lol
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Honestly, I've found that the right kernel makes the biggest difference and setcpu, juicedefender, etc only make it worse. For me (also 003 hw) kings kernel and htc # 15 uv have been best. I've had great success with azrael and vaelpak roms. Currently on vaelpak with kings # 11 with NO battery saving apps. I get 24 hours with my regular use. Yesterday was very light, I went 24 hours with just under 50% left.

This is what I've been testing for a while. This build contains auto bump charging based on the voltage as opposed to the full charge method. I don't know how it works on extended batteries yet...but works pretty good on stock batteries. With this, you should have a better chance of picking up the phone at higher voltages.

Incredibly RE -engineered questions

So I've flashed over to incredibly RE-engineered and I heard about the great battery life and speed. I sure did have a more noticeable speed improvement but my battery life hasn't gotten any better. Any reasons why this might be? And for some reason I can't load any videos off hulu either. Anyone have these similar problems?

Everyone's battery life is different because everyone uses their phone differently. One person may get great battery life because they don't do much with the phone, and someone else will try the same, but they do a lot of streaming, web browsing, etc and have horrible battery life. It's all trial and error until YOU find the combination that works well for YOU.
And the hulu problem I believe there is a fix for it in the thread. Search the thread for Hulu and you should be able to find it. (I am not sure of this because I don't use the rom, but I believe I read something about it when I tried it out.)
Battery life if tough to compare due to reasons above. When I was syncing a corporate email account via active sync I was getting 9-10 hours o this rom. I am no longer using active sync and right now am at 15 hrs 37 minutes since unplugged at 62%. Awake time is about 5 hours on this charge. This is with stock battery.
Exchange active sync is a hog.
I use my phone pretty often and Im usually texting and browsing on the net. But my battery life is maybe 6 or 7 hours? I haven't really gone all the way down to empty but that seems about right. Is that decent?

That's not quite good. On my stock battery I'm getting around 15-25 depending on use. Maybe check your settings for battery hogs?

I'm not sure what's wrong with my phone. My battery usage says that most of my battery is being used by cell standby and the android system. Should I reflash the rom and see if that helps? I want incredible battery life too this battery life is pretty much the same as a stock rom which is why I flashed in the first place : more battery life!
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I'm not a power user but I get better battery life with this ROM. Yeah, maybe you should wipe and re-install the ROM. I would then not install any apps and see what your battery life is like. Disable auto-syncing too. Maybe you have an app sucking the battery down.
Is there an app that i can download to monitor my battery usage? I know you can check it through the "About Systems " menu but I almost don't trust it.

Running a faster rom like re engineered, if battery life is super important, you can use setcpu to underclock slightly at all times, and lot at screen off. It comes with a lou's kernel, which he doesn't recommend using setcpu with, but I've always had great luck with king klix kernals, which also undervolt.

Calkulin's E4GT v2.0.1a VS Blazer Rom[12/11/11][v2.0]

They both claim to have great battery life and smooth operations. I am currently running Calk's 2.0. I get over 10hrs for my phone, depending on the usage. And the standby time is amazing. Now I am interested in Blazer 2.0 but I would like to get other peoples comments and opinions before I try it for myself. So, Blazer Rom[12/11/11][v2.0] VS Calkulin's E4GT v2.0.1a!!!! BEGIN!!! "ding ding".
Please and thanks to all.
Im running on phantomhacker's blazor rom and i get about 1% stand by time. With moderate usage (texting, light internet browsing, like 2 5 min phone calls) i got 1 day and 5 hrs. I could have gotten more but i couldnt afford my battery dieing so i had to charge it at 15%. With heavy usage of streaming music via pandora over wifi non stop, texting, and lots of xda i get about 14 hours with 3 hrs of screen on time. I havent taken screen shots but ill take some today at the end of the day.
Edit: mean 1% every 6 hours on standby

You'll have to wait until tomorrow. He snuck in the links when his wife wasn't looking; it's his daughters birthday today. I'm sure he'll update the OP and all once the candles are blown out and the cake eaten.
.....
I've tried an older version of Calkulin's rom. Didn't like all the rows and stuff with the apps. It was too cluttered for me but much respect to Calkulin. I can't give anything but love and respect to developers. For me the Blazer Rom is faster and better battery life. The best battery life so far of any rom I've tried.
Lately I've been testing out this technique on calibrating the battery and it works well for me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312273
I tried 2.01. I like everything about the ROM, but it didn't work well on my phone. I experienced worse battery life than stock. With the phone stock, I was having no problems getting through a day on one charge. I think in the time I've had my phone (2 weeks after release) I had to charge it during the day maybe 2 times. Once I put Calkulin's ROM on, I never made it through a whole day, or even close. I suspect the performance tweaks may push the phone to greater battery usage. I was looking for better battery life, not worse.
I had lots of problems with hot boots. If I made a call, I'd get a hot boot after about a minute. If ambient temperature was really cold, I could maybe get 2 or 3 minutes. I got hot boots using various apps, and in some I got none. The phone became unuseable for me. I flashed back to stock.
I suspect that my cpu is not very tolerant of higher temps. YMMV.
I did like the ROM though. I like the 5 buttons on the launcher, the 25 apps in the trays rather than 16, and no CIQ.

ics and battery life

At first my girlfriend had her Nexus S updated to ics and immediately we noticed a huge difference in how long her battery lasted and she is the furthest thing from a heavy user.
So when I heard that ics ws being released for our phone my first thought was i hope that what she experienced won't be what i do as we have a better phone right?
Well I am sad to say on a stock but rooted rom I experience the same lack of battery life as her.
Now I am no beginner to Android and have changed all sorts of settings available and nothing syncs on its own and when I unplug my phone from charging in the morning I will need to plug my phone in at night before bed as my phone will be completely dead.
I have to say I am very disappointed in the battery life of thr the stock rom and hope some good kernels make it out to help.

Have you tried to find out which app/process is draining your battery? Better Battery Stats can help you identify what is using up your battery.
I had a big keep awake problem when i first installed stock ICS on my T989D. I did a full wipe of the phone and formatted my internal SD card (after backing things up of course), reinstall the same stock ICS and everything works great now. Battery life is about the same as before (stock GB w/ Synergy kernel), which is about 30 hours with moderate use.
Try CM 9. I get almost 2 days of battery life.

Though I am now on AOKP, I had great battery life on stock ICS as well. But, everything is subjective. How many email accounts are being synced? Do you have Facebook / Twitter / G+ updating every hour? Do you have news feeds continuously updating as well?
I have to agree with the poster above. Get Better Battery Stats and find the culprit draining your battery and work from there.
biggest thing draining the battery is the screen.
you can literally watch the battery usage drop 10-15% in a period of 10 to 15 minutes which is absurd when its set to low.

Wait for kernel development. Its underway as we speak. It will make a significant difference.
Some battery saving tips:
- use juicedefender and set it to aggressive mode.
- use romtoolbox or other programs to underclock cpu frequency.
- also try using telus stock ics. Very good battery life.

I have a brand new T989D (I'm new to Android, former iPhone user) and got the ICS upgrade the day I got it (9 days ago). Battery life is terrible, I'm lucky if I get 10 hours of moderate usage. The phone also tends to run very, very hot. Sometimes apps freeze and all I can do is either wait or, in some cases, remove the battery to reboot.
I'm open to any tips that will get this fixed! I haven't rooted yet (no time). I think I will try those wipe tools and reflash the stock ICS ROM.

Stock, not rooted, my battery life is great. Something is using your battery up, and flashing some exotic kernel isn't going to change that. The stock kernel works fine. You'll want to find the root of the problem. Keep a real-time (or 1-5s interval anyway) eye on the phone's current (mA) usage, and when it's high for no apparent reason, you'll know that whatever is sucking your battery is doing it right then. That should help you characterize the problem. I've noticed when my WCDMA/GSM radio signal sucks, so does the battery life, so I either turn off the radio or switch to GSM only when I'm in that area. If your display is what's eating your battery, well a kernel can't stop that. Turn the brightness down, leave it on auto-brightness, or just deal with it if you need the display on all the time. But if tweaking and modding makes you happy, by all means...

I have the same complaint. The "screen" battery usage is just unacceptable, especially compared to GB. My phone has been draining from a full charge for ~4.5 hours and my screen usage is 70% and battery is down to 65% with hardly 10 minutes of screen-on time.
I use an app called autostarts and you basically enable/disable apps that start running when certain events happen (phone startup, wifi being turned on, incoming call/sms/mms, other apps turning on, etc.). Just make sure you do your homework so you dont disable something critical. Hopefully this app works on ICS. You'll be surprised what different events make certain apps turn on automaticly. Screen, data/wifi, gps and bluetooth are the biggest battery drainers. No matter what Rom you are on if you don't keep control of those items your battery will drain fast. Keep ur screen on auto, let it go off @ 15 seconds ( you have to be pretty used to your phone for that setting not to annoy you), turn OFF your data or wifi when not in use. With bluetooth and gps...well u know that when you use them your battery is gonna drain faster than normal...just keep that in mind. Its all pretty much common sense.
I'm not going to tell you how much battery time I get cuz its nonsense. There are times my phone lasts till the next day and others Im charging it by sundown. Then again Im still on Juggs n Darkside kernel and Im gonna wait a bit still b4 I make the switch. Also don't go by what other people say on battery life cuz if you might not get the same results on that ROM. Everyone of our devices is unique and acts different. Everyone user uses their phone different. You can't define "light, moderate, heavy" use so don't go by that either.

Bingo. Vastly different battery life between ROM's is generally BS. Every once in a great while one of these threads has merit but typically someone saying ROM X had "Killer" battery life is clueless and drinking the koolaid. Then a placebo effect takes place. And definitely someones "Heavy" use is subjective. If someone says they get a day out of an android phone they are not heavy users by my definition. It doesn't happen with heavy use. Perhaps the Razr Maxx or another phone with a very large battery but I've had 5 Android phones. If I get past noon it's because I am not using my phone that much and forget about a full day. It's never happened in the 4 years I've used google OS phones. Never.

My battery life

A few days ago I decided to try out ktoon's kernel. I was getting horrible battery life and there is a distinct possibility I did not give it enough time to settle as some have said. One person suggested I get Better Battery Stats, but at the paid app part, I didn't bother and went back to stock kernel.
Since then I have found the thread here and installed it to see what was going on. Fully charged battery unplugged and left idle.. When I woke up I had 8 hours of time on the battery and 92% left.. I was happy with this... A quick game of Angry Birds Star Wars later, and I am down to 88%... Now it has been an hour and a few random things later (Angry Birds Seasons, uninstalling bloat via titanium backup) and I am down to 78%.. 10% gone in an hour?
I am just a bit on the very confused side. I was getting 18 hours or so of decently heavy use prior to flashing a custom kernel. Now, I could just be checking my phone more and not noticing it and causing some bias here, but I am at a loss. One member seems to think I have a hardware problem causing my battery drain and that I should replace my device, but I figure it doesn't hurt to seek a second opinion.
As for the ROM I am on, it is just the stock LJ7 with a few theme tweaks I have done and removed some bloat.
Perhaps I am just looking too deep assuming something is wrong..
EDIT: I just followed a tip by Naddict to stop Google Maps from reporting anything.. Hopefully that helps a bit..
Same I think I get good battery life randomly like for instance any ROM or kernel I try I get random battery life sometimes 10+ hours sometimes 7 or less and I do my best at optimizing my phone to save battery I switch brightness to zero no sync at all juice defender ultimate was also tried lol

Could you post kernel alarms. I mentioned the potential for SD issues basically it works this way. You have cached information that doesn't get wiped the program accesses it and basically because for instance the ktoonsez kernel contains newer linaro or the fact it's based on 4.12 those small difference make the cache potentially poisonous.... another example is corruption of the partition causing media scanner to basically endless loop another example network spoofer if it crashes while running corrupts dalvik and requires a wipe. Or your SD card it's failing. Just examples

I can't complain with these results here... Since I did a few things when I got up, I lost 1%. But over night I only lost 7%
What am I doing wrong. 4 hours after a full charge and I'm at 28%. I used the phone for a total of an hour today between Facebook, YouTube and Internet browsing. Almost dead, WTF!! Do you have better battery stats? It will show if anything is running when screen is off then you can at least narrow it down. What Rom are you on?
