[Q] Phone wont turn on - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, yesterday I dropped my phone but it was working fine after. Then when I woke up today the phone is dead. The screen is off and it doesn't respond to anything. If I put the charger in the charge light does not come on, if I press the power button nothing happens.
I have tried pulling out the battery. Its been on charge for a few hours but the phone is still dead with the light off. Can anybody help me?
The phone is rooted and radio s-off with Android Revolution HD 5.2.3. I had a 75mV undervolt with the cpu at 998Mhz but the phone was stable at this setting.
If I take the phone for repairs will my warranty be void?
All help greatly appreciated.

I heard if it is a proper brick (like in your case) they cannot really tell whether you have a custom Rom or any hacks because they cannot power up the device anyway. So they either replace the board and get it back to you or send you a replacement... Or so I heard here in xda.

Thanks for the reply, if it doesn't magically fix itself hopefully it will be covered under warranty.

Its not a brick. Its a hardware fault.
I think you will get lucky though as i doubt they will get it fixed before offering a replacement. If they do repair it and find its rooted they wilt charge for repair.
You dont have any options though unless you take it for 'private' repair.

If I take it for private repair i will lose the warranty anyway, i think i have to take a chance with the service centre.
Do you know if theres anything i can try befor giving the phone in? Thanks for your help

If the phone wont turn on there is nothing you can do.
but remember dont tell anyone you dropped it. Find out if there is an official update first. If there is tell them you were peforming an official update and it just went dead.
tell them nothing more and pretend your stupid. Thats your best chance of a new shiny dhd. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out

are you rooted or stock? this happened to me once, but it seems that i had a bad rom install. i was able to boot into recovery mode and just restore my nandroid backup of the previous rom. hope this helps.
if you're not even getting the charging light, you're most probably bricked. sorry man.
RIP to your Evo.
i downloaded the newest radio like 7.28,,,then was in rom manager and selected the radio to install from sd card,,,clicked ok...i looked away for maybe 10 seconds and then i saw an all gray screen...then it powered off...now i cant get it to turn on...yes i was rooted...

I know may sound stupid but remove battery for a minute or so and try again... was your batt low when u started the update? May just have to wait for a bit of charge b4 it will turn back on...not sure if this will help but hopefully it will. Best luck to ya.
no...battery was nearly fully charged...and battery has been out for about 20 minutes...im thinking its bricked...anyone got any ideas? also...what do can i say when i take it into sprint..
I Think its bricked :/
But about your phone if it is bricked, i would say i lost it and keep the battery and sd and pay insurance to get a new one.
its hundred bucks for a new one...i was installing a htc radio,,,thinking its covered under manufactured warranty,,,also got 2 batteries for 8 dollars so not a great deal lol

Yea its legal and your friend is probably a cool dude and don't care and will warranty them but unfortunately they don't have to honor the warranty if user changes / modifies software that was not ota or provided by HTC or Sprint. Use at your own risk.
I would'nt tell them you tried messing with the software. I would just say you woke up this morning tried to turn on the phone and it would not turn on. Tell them you turn your phone off every night when you go to bed, keep it simple.
It's void if they know about it. That's what they said on g4 atots when they did the special on jailbreaking and rooting. But will they know if it don't turn on? I assume they (htc) would just flash new software on it and give it out as refurbished.
alright thanks guys...but it was the htc software lol...new radio update...idk,,maybe that dont count since someone had to extract it.,..but thanks guys
Its a long shot but wait a couple days for the update to come out and tell them you tried to update and it did that......

Yes, it is legal via an exemption to the DMCA to root/jailbreak a phone - HOWEVER, if you break the phone by doing this, it isn't going to be covered under the warranty. The warranty still only covers normal use, and hacking, however legal, isn't normal use. Sorry dude. Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, look it up. Warranty doesn't cover when you break the thing yourself, only when a manufacturer / latent defect causes a failure.
It really depends on which sprint store you go to. I always go to a 3rd party Sprint repair shop near my house. I had a rooted hero to 2.1; when the evo came out i bought one and took the hero to the sprint shop to update to the official 2.1 version to give to my dad. When they tried updating it, the phone would never fully boot so they gave us a brand new one. yes they new it was rooted and had a custom rom, i had talked to them that day and before about it and they didnt care.
anyway, best of luck in this situation. If you dont have a cool sprints guys than i would take sprink's advice and say you woke up and it wouldnt turn on. if there is no damage, what can they do?
^ Good luck with that...legal or not, he screwed the phone up. Not a warranty issue...
Just seen this thread they might be able to help you out.

Same thing happened to me...
I tried to restart my Evo today and the same thing happened. I took it to the Sprint store and the tech there said that the power button actually failed, and that they had to ship me a replacement. From what he was saying this has happened on a few of the Evos.
Ouch brick. Bring it back play stupid. I bet the issue was using rom manager to flash a radio. A radio isnt a ROM its the MOST IMPORTANT piece of code the phone has and a sure fire way to brick it if you mess it up. I wouldnt use rom manager other than to boot into recovery

After updating radio, phone won't turn on anymore

I updated my radio using recovery mode in clockworkmod, and after flashing, the phone rebooted. Upon reboot, it just showed the android coming out of a box icon. I pulled the battery out to reboot, and after that, the phone won't turn on anymore. Is it dead forever?
The battery was fully charged when I did this, so I don't think it's that, however I don't have another battery to test it with currently. Any help would be much appreciated.

You should not have pulled out the battery, it was installing the radio upgrade. Flashing radios is one of very few ways you can actually brick your device.
Can you still access Recovery?
As above, pulling the battery mid radio flash is a sure way to totally brick your device.
Installing a radio goes through 2 reboots, and you should never ever interrupt the process. Unless you can access recovery it looks like you have brick.

Don't know where you heard about pulling the battery out while flashing but that desire is no more than dust now.

If you can't access Recovery by holding volume down and power button when the phone is off, you have bricked it. The only way you can recover it now is to find someone with a RIFF box & JTAG or to send it back to HTC and pay an extortionate amount for them to do it for you.
Hmmm bad luck buddy... seems that its bricked indefinitely... is it still under warranty? I know its unethical, but maybe try sending it back and mention that you dropped it or something, you might get lucky.

Thanks for the reply guys, I guess I truly did brick it, as it won't even power on anymore.
Does anyone have an idea how much HTC would charge for the repair? Am I better off buying a new phone?

This is why you should always read up on what you are doing before you drive right in, your best bet now is to claim on the insurance or to contact HTC and see what they can do for you. They will without doubt be able to repair it for you, the question is, how much will they charge?
Lesson learned. Unfortunately, I was following the instructions at the cyanogenmod wiki for the Desire.
I thought the radio update was required to update the ROM, but it seems that that is not the case. Hopefully HTC will be willing to repair it.
As a long shot, is anyone here able to do the riff box/jtag repair?

I would think they will charge you somewhere in the region of $200+ to repair it, at least. Try looking here I had a little search for people with RIFF Boxes, at the bottom of the page are a list of people who can repair phones, shoot off a few e-mails and see how much they charge to save your Desire, it might work out substantially cheaper than sending it off to HTC.
Thanks! There's even a guy in San Jose. Hopefully he can work on short notice.
Was the $200+ HTC's potential repair fee, or the riff-boxers?

The potential repair fee. RIF Boxes aren't actually that expensive, ~$150 or so, but it's all about having the know-how to use the damned thing.

[Q] DHD brick and guarantee help

Hi Everyone !
I have a Desire HD and it bricked last sunday evening. It's only half year old, so I took it back to T-Mobile (I bought it from them). But it's rooted and Radio S-OFF-ed when died. Can the service establish that I rooted and S-OFF-ed my phone, or no ?
Thanks in advance !
If it's totally dead (no bootloader access or charge light) then they won't be able to tell. They'll fix it without any knowledge of software changes.
Sent from my Motorola Startac running Atari 2600 software!
Yep if its completely dead they wont bother repairing it, they'll just replace the motherboard. That way they have no knowledge of what you did to it.
Thanks for the answers,I'm happy right now, because you have the point:absolutely no sign of life. No charging light,no bootloader and no any happening when I press the power button (same with another battery too).
how did you manage to do that? It will be good for others to know so that they dont make such a mistake .

I don't know. Here's what happened:
1.: I use Opera Mobile for web browsing and the past few days it's become very slow. Sometimes the only way to close it is press the Home button and close it in task manager. I thought it's a software problem, so I made a hard reset, but it's not resolved my problem. Mean while I saw the news that HTC will not refresh the Desire HD to ICS in the first line, so I downgraded it and flash the latest NDT MIUI ROM.
2.: Next day I connected my phone to my PC and realised there is no communication between, only charging. I tried it in other computers and other USB cables, same result, so I wanted to back to stock. My only problem was the Radio system. I was still S-OFF-ed. I searched so many forums and I tried to get back Radio S-ON in Terminal Emulator, but it didn't work.
3.: Tried some instructions without any result and finally after a reboot procedure the phone didn't wake up anymore. No reaction for the charger, no reaction for any button pushed. Nothing. Took it back to T-Mobile and they check the battery because they thought maybe that caused this and they said it discharged over.
And now I'm waiting for an SMS or call how is my phone now
goodluck with that
Got it back from repair service. They changed its motherboard,so almost I have a brand new phone now I'm so lucky I guess ... huhh ... sweating a lot,but now I'm happy

If you plug it into your computer in that state, does it ask for qload usb drivers? if so, Its a true brick, and there's no way they'll know what you had going on. I had mine replaced in June this year after mine was bricked.

[Q][Urgent] Wildfire Died?

Well I rooted my htc wildfire and overclocked it.
Everything seemed to work fine for a few months
and then...
I got a text message, and I responded to it, but I did also see that my battery was almost empty, then after responding, I putted my phone in my pocket, Then like 15 minutes later, I looked at my phone and it didn't do anything anymore, so I thought, my battery ran out, nothing to worry about then I got home, plugged in my phone... led didn't turn on... phone didn't charge. I was like damn, maybe my battery died? So I went outside to someone who also has a Wildfire and asked if I could try his battery, We switched batteries and my phone still didn't work
Does anyone know how i can fix this? my phone doesn't respond to ANYTHING I've tried
These symptoms are a bad omen.

lol, how can it be bricked if I used the root for a few months and didn't change anything to it for a while?
also @lcd poster
if it was my lcd, my led should still turn on when inserting the phone to a power connection
also I do also think it is something with my mainboard/cpu, i've read on the internet that i'm not the only one with a phone that just doesn't respond to anything anymore (wildfire) even others who hadn't rooted their phone got this issue, although they have garrantuee :s

Yes your warranty is void. But, if you were on a Stock / Sense based ROM, you *may* be lucky and the service guys may not notice.

But maybe they won't start repairing it and give me just a new one, (since it's more expensive to repair the phone then to give me a new one i guess) and then they'll won't notice either?
also, if I do bring back my phone and they find out about it, will they charge me for the repairing costs? even if I don't want it to be repaired if it will cost me? (I already bought an iphone now, but sometimes i just want to experiment back with my android xd)
I really can't answer that mate. Policies vary widely across stores and nations. But, don't hold your breath for a new one, I think that case is extremely unlikely. I guess your best bet is to give them the phone, and have them contact yo regarding it's situation, repairs, and costs (if any) after their preliminary inspection / assessment. Only after their assessment, you give the go ahead to repair / replace (If free ).

HTC and Apple don't roll the same way.
Apple's products aren't even worth repairing, thus they don't bother doing that.
it might be an lcd problem this thing also happened to me...
I know quite a few friends of mine who had similar issues with other HTC devices and they just went to the shop and they were given new ones in a short time. usually guys at the customer service are ignorant and don't check for anything, even if in your situation it should be impossbile to know which rom you're mounting.
my advice is go there and have a brand new wildfire, nobody will discover it's without warranty
Mabye its static?
Once my brothers netbook had a static build up causing a problem i dunno if the same rules apply but try: take out battery -> hold power on for around 30secs, If that didnt work try getting into bootloader holding vol down and power on when your phones off
Hope my ideas worked and that your wildfires better
I have same problems
When i trying root my HTC device ... there are something wrong... so it can't boot after rooting.
I think that it was bricked.
How to unbrick HTC Wildfire? Pls, help me resolv this problem

If your phone was not updated to 4.1.2 then this is called Sudden Death syndrome which happens in note 2 when it is on 4.1.1. I haven't experienced this but, i heard the only way is to replace the mother board. I think this is a hard brick and hence no one will be able to tell whether your phone was rooted or not.

No, it was not updated. I hope they will fix it properly and I really hope they don't charge me for repair, I don't even know how much it would cost and if it would not be better to just buy a new phone if they don't acknowlege my warranty. So I really hope you are right they won't be able to tell.

Hi,
i just posted this query in another forum and the answer is you've the warranty you'll not be made to pay for this.
If you're not under warranty, it costs about half of the device cost.
Just let me know whats happens ok?
and also whether you were able to access download or recovery mode?
