I've searched for answers high and low and I have learned that my reboot issue might be hardware related, but I'd post a Q&A in case someone has a better idea.
My EVO reboots randomly. It mostly happens when I'm watching a netflix mirrored to my TV. It rarely happens when my phone screen is off (ex. WIFI hotspot). It happens on AOSP and Sense roms (CM7, Fresh, MIUI, and stock deodexed). It happens with different kernels and radios. The weirdest part is that it didn't start until about June 1st. About one year after a got it on opening day. I first noticed it while playing Plants Vs zombies. I talked to sprint and the tech guy was willing to work with me and has ordered me a replacement. I don't want to go get it because I will lose root.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
yes I've tried wiping all of the memory.

How about running a RUU and returning to complete stock?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060
And lose root? I could go to sprint and get my replacement if I wanted that. Or would it take me to 2.2?

Can you post a logcat and the last_kmsg after it happens again
And just a thought, maybe lowering the max cpu clock speed just a little, see if that helps at all.

If you run the 3.70 RUU (not the top two) you will go back to 2.2 and can reroot.
However, if you go back to stock and it still does it you're probably out of luck and will need a replacement.

It's possible. It's always best to go back to stock if you're having an issue that seems un-fixable.

Take this file and rename it PC36IMG.zip put it on the root of your SDCARD and boot into the bootloader and accept the update.
If that doesn't work you may want to try posting a logcat per kyouko's request.

Random Restarts
I received a replacement EVO back in June unfortunately. Ever since I have had this EVO I get those random reboots when running GPS, certain apps, and listening to streaming music. I have called Sprint on this MULTIPLE times and have gotten nowhere. They had me take it to a Brick and Mortar and the put it on a test bench and it passed with flying colors. 20 minutes later it rebooted. Took it back and they wanted to run the test on it again. Screw that. It will still pass. Called a Tech, they thought I had apps force closing, not reboots, even after I said I was having my phone crash and restart. The Tech had me do a data profile reset, ##3282# Edit Mode, Enter MSL, Hit menu, choose Reset Data Profile. It wipes something and then does a hands free activation. Still had issues. Today the Tech has me do the same thing and when that was done had me do a complete Factory Restore. Once I was able to run GPS and music at the same time. She was so excited that she had miraculously fixed me phone. 20 minutes later it rebooted. I havent called Sprint back but I am pissed. I didnt have these problems with my day one EVO, but when I get this refurbished piece of crap, it has more problems in the first 2 months that I had with my day one EVO for the first 350 days. Has anyone else asked Sprint why they do not keep tabs on ESN's and why they were returned. That would be good information to have....my 2 cents. To the OP, what did you say to the Tech to get a new phone? I have had no luck. Thanks.
I had luck getting a new phone because the tech I talked to at sprint owns a rooted evo and was impressed at why I thought it was a hardware issue. He knew a lot more than everyone else and he just asked for a new evo for me even though I don't have insurance and it's past warranty. I got lucky to be honest, but everywhere I've seen says its a hardware issue and it doesn't matter what you change, it still happens.
Goods luck with your refurb, I'm going to try one last thing before I trade in my evo for a replacement. I'm going to un root it to see if it can fix anything.
My evo
I ran the RUU and am on stock 3.70 and it reboot before I could even finish my market downloads.

I'm one of the idiots who decided to flash the 2.2 pre-release before even looking for a rooted version. I'm a dumbass, I know. Being new to the whole ROM thing, I figured I would just revert my last nandroid when I was down playing with it not realizing thinking that without root it's impossible. I want to return my phone to store where I got it from a week ago. Is their a credible reason that I can get them to exchange it for? Thanks!

Thank y'all for your tips!
I took it back to where I bought it today and explained to them that "I got this update the other day and ever since I have been having random issues with calls dropping out and haven't been able to maintain a stable 4g connection." The guy, who had sold the phone to me initially, took it to the back for five minutes and then came up and said he couldn't find anything wrong and that I would just have to "live with it" until the next update is released. I tried the whole I'm switching carriers threat but that did not work. He actually suggested I do that if I wasn't satisfied! Now, I understand that he was trying to do his job and reduce churn (I worked for another Sprint store and that was how we were trained), but to suggest leaving is just plain ridiculous (we would get fired for that)!
Having already been shot down and knowing the answer was still probably going to be no, I went to another store ~20 miles away. The guy there told me the same thing about not being able to return it if they couldn't find anything wrong. To my surprise, however, he said that with the last update they had a lot of returns and for that reason he would take it back.
I am now sitting here staring at a brand-new 2.1/1.47 EVO! I am getting ready to root and see if I can restore my last nandroid. Having learned my lesson, I think I will wait until someone comes out with a new rooted version of the final OTA.
Due to an issue where my phone will randomly turn off on its own and not being able to turn it back on for an extended period of time or being able to charge it (I think it was it too humid an area for too long), I want to take my phone back to Sprint but am rooted. So, I ran the s-on tool and have been trying to get completely back to stock but haven't been able to completely because I can still see super user in the app drawer. What is the best way around this? I tried flashing 3 or 4 different PC36IMG from bootloader but continually got an error saying something about my version being older? I was finally able to flashed a rooted stock image but still see superuser and can't get rid of it! As a last resort, I decided I would just go to system updates and let it upgrade me to gingerbread. However, when I click on system updates/software update, it searches for awhile and then says there are no updates available!!! What am I missing and what is the best way to just plain start from non-rooted scratch????
I can still see super user in the app drawer.

If you have s-on, then you are unrooted. There is no need to flash a stock rom if you are already on one. The SU app can just be uninstalled.

From what I have tried and read, you can't uninstall superuser. As an aside, I decided to accept the ota advice figured it was the quickest and easiest way to be sure I wasn't rooted. I don't mind being temporarily unable to reroot cause I'm sure a new method is close. Here's the weird thing though, I did the ota update to 4.24 and installed it, but still have Superuser in the app drawer! Wtf? I even did a factory reset but it still is there! How the hell do I get rid of that program!?

Yes, I am unrooted because my local Sprint store checks for root. What makes you so sure it doesn't matter to sprint? So, can either of you answer my original questions?

Super User gets placed in the system/app folder so as far as the phone is concerned it's a part of the core OS and cannot be removed without root. It honestly should not be a concern. You just have Super User preinstalled for when we get root for 2.3 OTA.

Just had my EVO serviced and I'm on Synergy ROM and got the phone back without any problems but a friend of mine took his in and got it back returned to stock unrooted so I guess depends where you go.

What was your phone in for, hardware or software? It's supposed to be that hardware issues (charge port, screen, buttons,, etc..) do not require that the phone bo returned to stock. On a phone with software issues we are supposed to return the phone to stock, run updates then troubleshoot. I know it blows getting that finely tuned custom ROM/Kernel wiped but the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
Now I personally will not flash a customers phone back to stock unless there is no other option but will generally start with a wipe to clear any crap out of the phone. Then again, when I was working with teamwin and orrebmas I was rooting/unrooting and flashing all the major ROMs as many as 10-15 times a day so I'm a bit more familiar with custom ROMs than most techs.

As a tech I can verify that for one, only Sprint employees have access to that forum and the service subforum from which that came is for ASC techs. Second, almost the entire thread was techs complaining about why should they service rooted phones for free. These are the same people that claim there is no way to be sure if a phone is rooted.
OK, now I see, I didn't realize you were a Sprint tech. Anyway, you know my situation, what would you recommend? What could be causing my random shutoffs related issues? Also, I've only had the phone since March. Is my issue covered by warranty? I don't have insurance

Thermal shutoff bug: If the phone gets to hot it will shut off and not turn on til it's cooled down. The sensor can get out of calibration and require lower and lower temps before it will boot. The worst case I have personally observed was a phone that needed to be below freezing before it would boot. This bug will also cause the charging circuit to not charge (it thinks it's too hot).
In a room that's no more than 75deg Fahrenheit turn on all the radios and run neocore interactive mode. Let it run for atleast an hour. If the phone shuts off immediately check to see if the kickstand is hot. Now I don't mean warm but hot. If the kickstand is not hot then your phone's temp sensor is out of calibration and requires that the phone be replaced. This is a known issue or "Device KIS". If the phone is within it's one year warranty there is no charge for the replacement. If the phone is out of warranty it is up to the discretion of the tech and/or manager to assist you in getting it replaced via Authorized Exchange or "AE".
I ran through the program as you suggested and the kickstand wasn't hot and didn't power cycle at all. Then what?

Sprint said they wouldn't work on my phone because it was rooted
Sent from my dope fly fresh EVO
I have three Sprint stores in my area. Two of them are managed technically inept managers, one of them is managed by a techno-god, I don't know what he's doing managing a Sprint shack but so be it. I talked to him about rooted Evos and he said that the other two stores don't check for it because they don't know anything about the concept of rooting. But HE DOES because it's hard to guarantee a repair on a rooted phone. According to him, it's up to the store's management and also up to Sprint. They don't necessarily check for "root" but if servicing a phone requires a software update, they're going to use a stock RUU and voila! That was my experience.
We're trying to determine the "root" (pun intended) of the problem so if you wanna come in here and start a fight go find a local bar to do so. We need to try and locate the source of the problem so either post something useful or walk away.
There seems to be some confusion and I dont know if its being ignored or what but theres an issue with these kernels that needs to be looked into further before new ones continue to be released.
Theres an obvious problem for a good amount of people and everytime I look I see comments that there isnt a problem. So heres everything I could quickly find regarding it.
Now Im not trying to be a **** about this but I dont get how the issue is unheard of when its one of the biggest topics in this section. And so we're clear, this is happening in ALL kernels. Unfortunately its been more profound in Zedos because it seems more people went with his method.
All Im asking is before more and more kernels are released that someone at least acknowledge the problem and see if it can be addressed before more and more people root and start complaining because they were told there was no LO.S. bug

Telling you right now someone is going to come in here and go "this belongs in General" then a mod will move your thread and deduct 5 points from something, not sure...but just a heads up
I also see a lot of people having issues, but I'm now on day 2 of flashing Zedo V1 and have yet to experience any of these issues. Not sure what I did different, but everything just works... The only thing I did was after rooting was getting my MSL from Sprint and erased the proxy servers in the ##3282 menu.
EDIT: Ok, I just lost service 1 1/2 day after rooting... Bug finally hit me..
I dont mind it being moved and I have no clue what the deduction in "points" does but I'll deal with it.
Now Im getting much better battery but I know people are still losing service on the new OC kernel. My roommate happens to be on e the unlucky ones.
Man...thanks for posting this. Hopefully the mod doesn't close this thread. This definitely is a concern and a serious matter. I don't care if these kernels are, "use at your own risk" these kernels should've been listed as betas, and/or the bugs should've been listed and further testing should have been. If those steps were taken, I bet a lot of people would've held back from flashing them. I know I would have.
Shabby posted this earlier in the other thread (post 160):

One thing that got to me was this morning I woke up, hoping to see a stock kernel and/or a way to return to stock. And instead, I see a new overclockable kernel. To me that's just not right. I think that you have to prioritize. That's like putting out a rom that has all data broke. Then instead of fixing it, you put out another rom...while disregarding the issues with the first rom. At least acknowledge the issue and let everyone know it's been worked on....don't just blow it off.
I know some of the devs over in the Evo forums was good about this....if something went haywire with one of their roms or mods...they were all on top of it to get the issue fixed and they also communicated with posting updates on the matter.
Like I said, hopefully the mods don't close this.
I'm definately gonna follow this thread...thanks Wingzfan

Bubby does have the stock kernel pulled. I was testing it till 1:30 in the morning but he's gotta recompile it. It was bootlooping so today thats his first order of business.
As for the kernels, I flashed it by choice. I dont blame the devs for ANYTHING, Im just saying acknowledge theres a bug and lets see how to resolve it.
I've been reading through the rooted kernel threads as well prior to jumping on the root wagon and have seen several people mention that they are not rooted and have experienced the loss of service so it seems that the issue may not be exclusive to the rooted kernels...possibly a Samsung bug?
Very possible which is why im hoping we can get an idea of how man people are rooted vs non rooted having it. Now the only thing is I cant find any complaints online about nonrooted phones doing it except a few here and youd think it'd be widely discussed

This is an issue that started with mine also yesterday. But not only did I lose data but gps also. A reboot fixed it but I would like to know whats going on. I just came from the evo 3d and there was an issue that had to do with the prl so I am going to give that a shot with the 11115 prl that fixed the evo. Will post back with the results later today.
On V5, Ive only had the loss of data once in about 12 hours, versus about 3 times on Zedo V1.
I also did http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17703908&postcount=11 for the hell of it to see if that helped (even though I got it at a sprint store)
For the record:
A) People have reported this issue even on the stock kernel. It is not clear where the cause is.
B) For kicks (and because it cannot hurt) I did the whole profile/PRL update thing that someone suggested. Be it luck or real benefit, I have no had the issue since.

I would think it would be widely discussed as well so that seems odd. I'm waiting to see what evolves or at least for stock kernel (an undo) before flashing a rooted one. I don't have TEP.
It's still a bit early for the issue to be too widely discussed.

For the record:
A) People have reported this issue even on the stock kernel. It is not clear where the cause is.
B) For kicks (and because it cannot hurt) I did the whole profile/PRL update thing that someone suggested. Be it luck or real benefit, I have no had the issue since.

Nice. I was told by a helpful Sprint cust. serv. rep. a while back that you should update your PRL & Profile when you go into a new area (tavel, move, or even long commute to work) regardless of which phone you have. I would think unboxing your phone would qualify as well. It sure couldn't hurt.

Good point. Many people would not likely research on the web/forums, instead they'd likely address the issue directly with Sprint.

Yeah...I read those too. However, I never lost any service at home with any android phone I've owned..Nexus S 4g, all Evo's, Epics etc. Then today I wake up and I have no service....maybe it is a samsung bug, but I'd rather return to stock myself to see if the issue was still there.

Ever owned a Samsung phone before?
This is my 3rd one and I swore after the last one Id never buy a Samsung phone again but I got sucked back in. Samsung is notorious for shipping phones with all kinds of bugs that should be considered showstoppers then pushing out fixes months later.
It would not surprise me at all if that was the case here. I am one of the ones having this issue and I am not rooted. Ive lost data several times after hanging up a call. The data never restores and I have to toggle 3G to get it come back.
I dont think this is a kernel issue. I think its something to do with the rest of the OS, either that or the kernel is a different problem thats just acting the same way.
Ok thats what i was hoping to find is nonrooted and rooted people who are having the issue. Now on my moment this issue was huge so i went to htc and maybe thats the case again. Maybe sammy dropped the ball again. Question is what can be done about it.

I kinda of want to intentionally brick my phone just so sprint would replace it. I have been having some trouble with my evo lately, it just started to reboot so frequently lately. I was running decks 1.2.1 and just thought it was the rom, so i completely wipe everything, reflash and same thing. I noticed when my phone rebooted it would get hot or warm, and gps did not work after flashing decks 1.2.1, trying to use gps would automatically cause the phone to reboot. Any rom with the vision gps drivers would cause phone to reboot when trying to use gps, only gps driver that would work was the cm7 drivers, mainly used the N39 one and that would work and I could use gps, but phone kept rebooting. So then i tried to flash the latest stock rom, but had same problem. Also tried to use myn's warm rom release 5, which was always so stable in the past and never had any problems with when i was using it in the past, but yea phone just would reboot at random when phone would get warm or just doing stuff. Then i flashed the latest radio, pri, nv, and hboot. Went back to decks but its very frustrating, i can not use my phone for a long time or it warms up and goes into a bootloop, then have to pull the battery and give it a couple minutes to cool down before i can pop the battery back in and have it not reboot immediately afterwards. So after all this i was just gonna try and brick it to see if i could get another evo, but yea i tried to flash a radio and battery pull but that did not work. Did i screw myself by flashing the latest hboot?
Why don't you flash a stock rom. See if it still does it and then go to sprint and tell them all the problems you're having

That's insurance fraud dude, cause everyone's prices to go up. Don't be that guy.

I did try a stock rom and it kept happening. That is why I was trying to brick it so they would just exchange it. If I take it to sprint I would need to flash a RUU right? Then deal with sprints b.s. until they exchange it.
I've never had a problem getting my phone replaced. You have problems with your phone. They will replace it. And yes, the ruu will return it to stock.

How is it insurance fraud? My phone is not working properly, I have been paying an insurance charge on my plan since the launch of the evo. Don't want to deal with their very annoying employees and just want a replacement, is that too much to ask for?

Well it seems like that is what I am gonna need to do. Must have bad luck then, because I have had a horrible experience getting a phone replaced but thanks.
Pull your battery while flashing a radio update should def brick you but you should just unroot if your worried.

That will definitely brick it.
It sounds like a hardware issue. Sprint will replace it. Don't brick your phone, not worth it.
RUU to the latest update. Get S-On (there are a few threads with tutorials). Try to document your phone acting up if you can (I had an overheating issue with my old phone so I took screenshots of an app showing my phone 135+ degrees. Reboots, maybe video it, I don't know.)

I've been having this issue also, it keeps getting worse. It seems like something is not getting cleared because after a clean wipe/flash everything is fine. Then as time goes on it starts happening again. I thought it might just be a rogue app, so I didn't install or restore anything and it eventually freezes. I think it may be a JB issue because I've seen people with other phones post about it as well. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

That worked for me for a day, it just did it twice since I posted. I'm not sure what to do next. I guess I'll go to sprint, they replaced it once already because of this about a month ago.

Took mine in just now. They are gonna replace it. It froze while the guy was using it. I think the big man up top threw me a freebie because I forget to get rid of the root and all, but the sprint guy noticed how hot my phone gets (I thought it was normal but apparently not, he said it was borderline damaging my phone, been like that since the day I got it) and he said he was just gonna replace it right then and there. Getting it Wednesday. Glad he didn't see my clockworkmod.
But sprint is very good to me. Kinda sad they remember me because I come a lot since 2010.

They cover rooted phones. Really sounds like a hardware issue to me. Never had mine do anything like that and I've been rooted and custom from like the second hour I had the phone.

I thought rooting your phone voided warranty? It is a hardware issue though..So i do see where you're coming from.

It's really going to come down to store interpretation of the rules. Yeah, there are so many variables that could come with the rooting process itself it's also so unlikely to be the problem. The commonality of bad electronics is so, well....common and this does sound so hardware-ish. I'm absolutely certain some other store would have been jerks about it just because the store happened to hire jerks. Sounds like they get good people. I'd say write them a nice email. Try to add the guy's name in. At least help him get a better raise or something for his effort.

Thank you for clearing this up. I'm with you on the hardware issue though, because if it freezes up for the basic scrolling then there is something wrong. Plus if it gets that hot that quick without much usage there is obviously something wrong.
My LCD went out and I had to go to 3 different Sprint stores just to get it fixed..
I hope it's not hardware related. This is the second phone that has done it and it takes about a month each time for the issue to show up. That could be a manufacturing defect, but it seems so rare and random.

He would have if it didnt get to hot while he used it. While he was checking for normal freezing problems, it froze on him, and then right before he was about to factory reset it, he said he would just order a new one. He showed the other tech how hot it was and was amazed. It froze just from opening an app and scrolling,
and got hot with 3G turned on and the phone just sitting there. I've always used stock rooted, never flashed new kernel or anything. I think he might have noticed and just let it slide, because as I said before, I have been coming in since 2010 with legitimate reasons to replace phones. I just odin'd my phone after triangle away so it looks completely stock. Before that I backed up all my files with my backup, and when I get the new phone, I will just root it and restore. I'm lucky though. I told him that I have tried many factory resets and even the Odin ones where it wipes the internal memory and it still does it (which is true, I have). When I take it in, I could have acted dumb and said NY friend did that rooting so he could silences my camera blah blah, but I like to be honest.

Just make sure you reset the flash counter and Odin it after you backup all the files you will need.

I always try to do that. Every time I go in, the techs are so nice. They say sprint may call and text me about my store experience and they ask will you say you had a good one, and I always say I definitely will, but I never get that call or text. Didn't know you could email, so I will definitely do that now! Like I said, I have been where stores hire jerks, and tech wise, they have always been kind and willing to help. Maybe its because I'm straight forward with them, maybe not. If he would have asked if I rooted it I would have said yes. Thank you for the idea.

Well that's good. Just take it in and tell them what is going on. Glad I'm not the only one with the issue. I wasn't gonna take it in, but today it froze 6 times in a 30 min to and hour time interval and I decided it was time to. And I guess its not suppose to get that hot. Like I said, it did that from day one, so I thought it was normal lol.
