For some reason no one has ever themed Go SMS. I think its the best sms app out there personally. It would be truly awesome if someone could black out everything except text, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people would use it to go with their themes. Come on themers!!! Be the first!
No one has done it because go SMS allows you to theme just about everything, even the popup messages now. Go to menu > appearance and you'll need settings for conversation and conversation list. And apply your black/white settings over the do-it-yourself theme.

I know you can theme almost everything...but you still cannot theme the top and bottom bars on the screen OR the text box. See the picture below pointing to the parts I think would be awesome blacked out completely. With the text box, I say make it black background with white text. why not?
As you can see, i tried to pick the darkest possible theme...but still not black. This is pure simple dark theme btw. the bottom sections are even worse (whiter).

So I just updated to froyo yesterday and noticed stock sms/txt messaging was changed to bubble style. Is there any way to change txt msg / background color? Im currently using handcent but would keep the stock if colors are customizable. Thanks in advance.

i too am wondering about this. the Eclair default messaging app was much cleaner and simpler (not to mention it used a black background which saves battery).
i've resorted to using Go SMS as it's free with no ads and has allowed me to get back to a simple text only (no bubbles) conversation style.
i couldn't find a way to easily change the colors or bubble style of the default messaging app.
its also kinda annoying having sms logs on the call logs...

agree. no idea why they thought i would want all of my SMS logs clogging up my call log.
I'm a new GNex owner, and having used other Android overlays such as HTC's Sense, I was wondering if it's possible (if there are any mods possibly?) to do:
- Link Facebook status updates with contacts
- Link Facebook pictures with contacts
If the two above are not possible:
- When setting a 256x256 picture that is good quality as a contact picture, is there a way to have it remain good quality? Every picture I assign contacts looks like crap and pixelated
Adding on:
- Is it possible to create folders in the app drawer?
- Is it possible to change the color of a new message in the text messaging application? When you get a new text it's white instead of light grey, and it's hardly noticeable which conversation is the new one.. is there a way to set the new conversation (in the message inbox overview) to say a light blue that matches the rest of the UI? Or even have a notification beside the message (where it displays all the messages) to let you know which one if the new message?
Thanks.

**I believe there is an app called hacksync or haxsync (not sure on the spelling) that lets you link up contact pics through facebook. having never used it I can't tell you if it is in the store or here on XDA. I would do a search and I'm sure you'll find it.

**Unfortunately this is a problem on Google's end. The servers they use to store contact information on have very low picture resolution. like 96x96 low. Solution: in the account settings, turn off sync google pics or use hacksync

**Neither one of these options are possible unless your rooted. even then I haven't seen a mod for adding folders to the app drawer. It could be out there but I doubt it. There are mods for changing the apperance of the stock msg app but you are limited to whatever the themer wants it to look. (I actually feel the same way about the calender ut so far I haven't seen a good replacement theme for it yet). however, if you want full control to customize your SMS the way you want, you can either download GO SMS or Handcent SMS from the store. Both offer full customization for all aspects of the application.
I hope this helps

HaxSync (and others) will link photos to contacts from FB.

Not to my knowledge. Definitely not in stock.

Alternate SMS apps can surely configure colors.
Thanks for the responses.
I downloaded HaxSync and it's awesome! The pictures are good quality and it shows recent activity from my contacts.
I'm going to try an alternative messaging application. If I have two messaging applications open though at the same time (does the stock messaging app run as a background process all the time?), will it slow my phone down?

It will run, and is required to fetch the messages. It won't slow anything down.
Go launcher EX allows you to make folders in the app drawer i believe.
I havent used it for a while but its a really good replacement launcher and has tons of features.
You might like that.

It'll be fine mate, just remember to turn off the notifications in the stock messaging app.

Not at all. Just disable notifications in the stock app and you're good to go with the replacement.
I'm on stock yakju 4.04 and yes, I'm able to create a folder and drag it to my app tray.

And how exactly do you do that?
I love ICS and the custom ROMS, thanks for all the great work from everyone making the themes. But I find the picture next to every text message a waste of screen real estate. In some ways I preferred the old froyo SMS because all you need is a picture at the top of the screen of the contact, and you don't need your picture just a different colour text for your msg and their msg. If it was a really long message you could touch the message again - it would go to full screen white on black for easier reading.
Has anyone put this functionality back on ICS. Is it possible to do?
Just download sms application in the market like handcent or go sms.

I recently tried Swiftkey 3 in order to see if the keyboard allowed the user to see the actual Emoticon when you want to send one in a text. Just as in the stock keyboard, all you actually see is the characters that are used, not the actual smiley. I would like to use some but dont have all the smileys memorized as to what the emoticon actually is and the only way to know is to send the text and see it when its too late. I sent my buddy a kiss yesterday lol. Is there an app or any way to actually see which smiley I choose. I will say the Swiftkey 3 keyboard is just excellent at its predictive typing. I barely spell anything correctly and punch in whatever is close and it turns out perfectly. The stock keyboard changed it to sentences I couldnt even make sense of. Thanks pete
I haven't used anything that allows you to see them. You just learn as you go. You can always text your own number the emoticons though.

I don't think you'll get this from a keyboard, you might have to find a different SMS program that interprets the smiley keys as an actual smiley while you type. I's using GO SMS Pro, by default it doesn't have this function, but there might be an option to activate it. It's free, so you can install it and look for the option.
How does go sms differ from the stock messenger
Sent from my LT28at using Tapatalk 2
Go, along with other third party apps, allows you to customize the look of your inbox via themes, assigning individual contacts a specific text tone, and other features are available as well. I know with Go, you can install the emoji plug in that iPhone uses, but only those with the plug in can see that kind of stuff.
On a side note, now that I think about it, Go has a button within the texting that allows you to see what the emoticons look like before choosing.
Edit: I just checked and the feature you are looking for is indeed available in GO SMS Pro. With the soft keyboard down, there is a smiley face button and it allows you to see what the emoticons look like before choosing. Hope that helps.

K trying it out but I have one issue with go. When you send a pic to someone who doesn't have go its a link to the picture instead of actual picture. Is there a workaround for that
Sent from my LT28at
How are you sending the photo because I haven't had an issue like that.
Sent from my LT28at
There are two ways to send a photo. If you click the soft button that says go and select image, that's when it sends a link to someone without go. If you were to select MMS at the far right instead of go, it sends an actual image via MMS.
Have you been using the go tab to send pictures?

Is anyone able to have a dark theme in the stock messenger? Black/grey background instead of white?
I used the mms photo but sent it to an iphone user. Sending to other androids is fine. Thanks for the suggestions. I am liking it so far much better than stock with a black and gray theme downloaded for free.

You can tell that iPhone person to just get an android phone and solve the problem
Well I'm stumped honestly. You could try emailing the devs

Not a big issue just wondering if non smartphone people will get a link or picture?

Would someone mind posting these files up to a mirror?
You follow the link to another page, click the "Download" button, get the obligitory Pop up, and then get shunted to a "Wait 20 seconds" page, then after the wait you can click on the new link to find out you need an account to download it.
...Really? ...am I a rat in a maze or something? >SHEESH!<
Its actually worth getting a 4shared account.

ok i deleted my stock themes and the theme chooser so i can't check them out, but i uploaded it so heres the link to the download in my dropbox.

You do know that uploading them to DropBox is a bad idea unless your paying for it right?? If enough people download from you they disable the links....
Here I uploaded them on my server

No...but you can download exdialer from the play store.

I hate that ATT contact list and dialer and so I downloaded Rocket Dialer from play. Some of the good settings are hidden deep and so you have to spend some time with it. But there are a TON of options. Themes (maybe 150)?, font type, font size, key color and background display color even inside the theme you choose. Literally thousands of options.
So far both the dialer part and contact part both are working great for me.
