Hello! I have spent the last 2 days reading and searching for threads with the same problem that I have. Unprosperous, I desperately hope that you guys can help me, because I am really stuck. Now to the problem..
Basically, as you may already have understood, I am totally stuck in HBOOT-mode. There is no way I can navigate my way through the different menues. None of the buttons won't react. It is the same problem as this guy has:
The phone is a rooted HTC Desire, temporary running CyanogenMod, Gingerbread 2.3. Do you know, or do you think you know how to solve this problem, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
Anyone? Feeling insanely desperate. However, I'm also very grateful for all the help I can get.
Someone in the thread you linked said that he solved the problem, maybe try messaging him?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Just did that, thank you. Now, lets hope he replies.
Use the pb99img method in the thread I started

Uhm.. I'm not sure I got that right. Which one of your threads do you want me to read? Sorry, but I'm a total n00b at this. That's why I'm asking for help. Though, I think I've heard about that "PB99IMG"-method before, where you have to put the .zip file in the root of your SDcard, or something like that (?). The main problem is, I'm not sure how to go through with it myself.
I appreciate the help!
I'm willing to help, but you have to get the basics..
It's a complete guide on how to unroot. Click on my userid to go to my profile->Click->Statistics->Threads started by->"How to unroot..."
Droidzone, I just read your guide. It was very detailed and easy to understand, good job!
So, I should just follow the steps and unroot my phone? I'm not sure if I have to make myself a goldcard, because when i first rooted my phone, i managed it without making one. But im considering to make one anyway, just to be on the safe side.

You should definitely make a gold card. It is the difference between bricking a device and having to return it, and restoring it to a perfectly working form. It hardly takes 15 mins to make, and you can even make one of your existing card, save all the intermediate files safely and use that card as a non-goldcard too (though not recommended). All you need is the CID of your sdcard, and once you save it as a text file, you can make a goldcard any time you need without a phone. But for safety reasons it is best to check that a goldcard works by actually following the procedure to the end.
I made the guide when as a newcomer to the forum, I almost bricked the device. Lack of a goldcard was what my issue unsolveable..
Now, every time I visit the Q/A section (which is infrequent now), I see at least 10 recent posts which can be solved by my guide alone.. Someone ought to sticky it
There is one step that says I have to put the PB99IMG.zip into the root of my goldcard. I don't understand, how do I do that?
You dont know how to copy a file to sdcard??
Oh.. So you just have to copy the file to the SDcard?
Yup.................
Nevermind, then..
EDIT: I'm stuck on the Goldcard. Can't get the CID. It won't find it..

Well, I do have CyanogenMod on it. But I'm stuck in HBOOT-mode. I assume you did read the first post?
No, S-ON.
Formatted the SDcard, moved the PB99IMG.zip into it and booted the phone. I got much further than I did before. However, it has been remained stuck on the white screen for about 10 minutes. It says..
"Parsing ... [SD zip]
[1] Bootloader
[2] Radio V2
[3] Radio_Cust
[4] Boot
[5] Recovery
[6] System
[7] User Data
[8] Splash1
[9] Splash2 "
Am I doing something wrong?
Any thoughts on what I should do next?

Hi this is my first post so go easy on me please, Im looking into flashing my htc desire im fairly familer with flashing other devices such as xbox or ps
and i want to ensure i get this right obviously. Xda is a great source of information .. ive tryed to read through a lot of it to make sure im familer with proccess
and id just like to make sure ive understand what has been posted correctly.
So as far as rooting is concerned i can follow either of these 2 guides :-
h**p://rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/desire/howto-root-your-htc-desire
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
•Root guide for users who have unbranded(unlocked) Desire - post #2
on this guide i notice you flash with rootupdate.zip , so am i correct in thinking that with any of the roms i download i just rename them to rootupdate for this proccess to work ?
Also ive noticed a lot of talk about backing up and one program keeps popping up called nandroid , as far as im aware i can use this to make a image of my phone and restore at a later date should i want to,
is there a tutorial ive missed in regards to this program someone could point out or any other programs i should use to backup data on phone ... ?
Finally my phone details , i would just like to confirm that im fine for flashing
FW version 2.1update 1
baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.02_2
kernal version 2.6.29-0cb9f166
build number 1.21.405.2
software number 1.21.405.2
H.Boot 0.80.0000
Microp-031d
Radio-4.06.00.02_2
Any help is obviously appreciated thank you , as i say i want to make sure i understand the tuts and info provided
nooooo no no no no, first of all follow this guide to rooting its by far the easyist, http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/, once rooted you will be able to flash any rom from recovery, i suggest flashin the latest clockworkmod recovery from here http://www.unrevoked.com/#desire, when flashing anything there is no need to change there name these days
Just follow the following tutorials to root and flash roms. It's easy as pie.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-desire/
http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-desire/
For backup, recovery and whatnot, use ROM Manager app from within Android. It does the same thing as nandroid in recovery mode.
wow thanks for the speedy replys guys really appreciated , im going to go over the information both of you have provided over tea shortly and post back
Since you are 0.80 i suggest not to follow the nimbu's guide. These guides from my understanding is for Hboot 0.75 and lower. The higher ones like myself use a different file. You can follow the steps from theunlockr.com but don't use their file. If u want the 0.80 file i would get it from desire.modaco.com its i think on the first page of the forums.
I just flashed yesterday and i had to open many different tabs cause none of the guides state 0.80 or higher and which files to use.
ok ive gone thru the tuts both have provided and i notice they all tell you to make a gold card , i was under impression i dident need to do this as my phone is network free ?
why not just use unrevoked 3.0?
well this tut i posted is revoked
h**p://rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/desire/howto-root-your-htc-desire
also can i confirm i dont need to make a gold card as im unbranded / network free ?
My phone was unbranded but I still couldn't get past step II on Unrevoke, which was related with goldcard. I suggest you go make one.

If it's unbranded then you can skip the gold card step.
Hey guys,
I'll start with a heads up; complete newb here so I hope i have the right forum/section. Furthermore I appologise for my English, it is not my native language so I hope I can make myself clear. So far for the disclaimers.
Here's the situation; I have a Dutch HTC desire and I am absolutely lost in the rooting proces. I'll give you guys my specs first;
Phone
- HTC Desire running Android 2.2 Froyo from the OTA update
- Hboot version 0.92.0001
- NO Goldcard, regular microSD 4 gig that came with the device, haven't altered it
- Radio 5.09.00.20
PC:
- Windows 7 x64
- HTC Sync installed
Now I want root, preferebly with OpenDesire and A2SD so have been googling about the entire weekend now, but haven't found any guides that match my specs fully, havent got a clue where to start really with the rooting process. For instance; most downgrading guides talk about needing to use Hboot 0.92, where mine is 0.92.0001. Also some guides tell me I need a goldcard, others say I don't.
This is where I'm at right now, having read several guides these are the steps I think I have to take;
1. Backup everything using Mybackuppro
2. Downgrade using PB99IMG.ZIP. Is this correct, and will it work with my Hboot? Will I need a Goldcard for this?
3. Root the phone using Unrevoked. Will this work, concedering I have HTC Sync installed, and if no will a normal uninstall through the Windows programs uninstall be sufficient for "Uninstall HTC Sync completely" or are further meassures required? Will it work on my radio version, or is this not of any matter at this point?
I believe that at this point, my phone is worthless, right? There is no rom installed, so at this point I would need to install a rom. So on to step 4;
4. Install OpenDesire rom. I have read things about it having to be a zip file, the files I found though were .exe's Will the .exe do, or have I found the wrong files? Also I read that in order for the camera to work on OD, i need radio version 5.x, which I do. Will the rooting/downgrading proces make any changes to the radio version also?
5. Is this it? Have I missed anything, or are these roughly the steps I have to take to downgrade from 2.2, root, and install OD (which I believe also is a 2.2 version, with the JIT correct?)
Any tips, advises and remarks would be highly appriciated, coming from an ancient Nokia E65 I'm sort of unsure how to handle Android, how import small nuances like the exact version of Hboot are.
Also, if I have left out any important information please do not hesitate to ask, i'll reply ASAP.
Not one reply? Anyone?

You probably have the new phones which is with the SLCD screens. There is currently only 1 method to root those. But you need to operate with a black screen. Which means you won't be sure if you really pressed the right option or not. Try search for the SLCD root for HTC Desire.

Downgrading will require a goldcard if your phone is network branded. It is necessary to root your phone.

Still have the AMOLED version, not the SLCD one... Was one the first with a Desire in Holland, just sort of late with rooting it... and now there's hundreds of outdated tuturials, making it hard to figure out which ones still work

Ok, thx. I bought the phone without any form of network branding, your post implies that I will not be needing a goldcard then, correct? Or do I need it anyway for A2SD?
Right, what ROM is on it at the moment? IF it's 2.09.405.8 then do the following...
Download this file:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed_txt.zip
and rename it PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip!!) and copy to the root of your SD card. Turn phone off and boot into HBOOT by holding Vol-down whilst turning it on. Follow the instructions and allow it to update (assuming it works). Once done, reboot and you'll be back on 1.21.405.x and you can now root your phone using unrEVOked
OR
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
If you run this utility it will tell you if you need a goldcard. If you do need one, you can quit it, make one, and run it again.

The problem with the first method is that it corrupts your misc partition, which will need fixing. The second one takes care of everything.

ok just got my htc desire today and i want to root it.
im not sure if i have a branded or unbranded device?
all i know is theres a t mobile splash screen when it starts up, theres no other writing on the phone or anything.
can i use the revoked method?
You have a branded phone. If using unrevoked it doesnt matter. Like to add using unrevoked is the easiest method.
oh ok i thought you needed a gold card or something
so guys can i use the revoked method?
unrEVOked doesn't need any Gold Cards. But the first thing you should do now is to record down your OS version and download the right RUU to unroot.
p/s: unrEVOked is very simple. Make sure the drivers are installed and all that jazz and you'll be fine.

Though Unrevoked does not need a goldcard, since you are having a branded Desire, creating a goldcard is the first thing you should do. You never know when a rooting process can go bad. Even a power failure on a PC can interrupt the flashing process. In such a case, you might need to restore the device to its original state, for warranty purpose or for solving the problem. In either case you will need a gold card. So create one right away!
so just to clarify, i should create a gold card, then use unrevoked method?

Yup.
Create a goldcard, store it someplace safe, and forget about it.
Then, root with Unrevoked.

As mentioned above, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the software version. Once you have it, go here:

And if there is a file there matching your version number download it so you can always go back to stock

after trying the downgrade again, ive down everything it asks, im now on the bootloader screen and its come up CID incorrect Update Fail! press power to reboot
thats the part im stuck on, so either i need to unlock my phone... or try and find the 1.32 software that orange released part from that i have no idea what to do
Did you create a goldcard? If you successfully made a goldcard it wouldn't fail on the CID.
no i can't mate, i have no idea how to create one... ive tried to follow step by step guides and whatnot but i just can't get my head around it, its probably so easy i could do it blind but yeh im not that techi to work it out... would it help if i pay someone to unlock my phone? i seriously have no clue... i can jailbreak an iPhone with no issues whatsoever but thats a iPhone lol
Without a goldcard you can't downgrade. Unlocking will just remove the SIM lock, it won't root or otherwise modify you handset.
If your quick & install TeamViewer I can attempt to make a goldcard for you from your computer.
will do mate that would be awesome, ok where would i download teamveiwer?
scrap that ive downloaded it
Once you've installed it PM me the ID and 4 digit password.
ivve got that up and running
PM me the correct password, it should be 4 numbers
thanks everyone, and especially thanks to AndyHarney for creating my "goldcard" after many weeks of frustraition ive finally rooted that mofo lol, all tho now after all that ive forgotten what i was actually doing in the 1st place lol... i'm sure i wanted to put on Gingerbread or a custom rom
if anyone fancys giving me a hand with that i'd be seriously greatful lol
I personally use MrGaraks MIUI 1.41. Its iPhone-esque in appearance but it is essentially a very heavily skinned CyanogenMod 7. It gets better every week too as MIUI updates weekly on a Friday.
Your spoilt for choice really when it comes to ROMs.
So are you now rooted, with clockwork mod recovery?
Hey guys. I want to go ahead and start the process of rooting my HTC Wildfire, but the problem is, the current Revolutionary build supports only the 1.01.0001 HBOOT version. Mine is (you guessed it) 1.01.0002.
Luckily, HTCDev.com has finally launched their Bootloader unlock process that seems to be considerably easier than using GoldCard (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1145035).
Problem is, when I get down to the RUU download list on the first page of instructions, my carrier isn't there (I currently live in Malaysia and use Maxis). There is, however, an HTC WWE RUU at the bottom available for download.
A little help guys, cause I'm VERY new to this all and would REALLY love some help on what to do.

Yep understood. Well I just wanted to make sure to know that other method (or not). There will be a bit of risk left with all methods to root, s-off, debrand or flash a device - so the only helpful thing might be experiences of others...
That's a point where I probably could be of some help: people unlikely will come back with success stories, most likely they will post errors and problems- so here is my report: I haven't had any issues, problems, hassle with the gold card method (the thread you were pointing to) and I am not a developer, programmer or other kind of a "pro" plus this has been my first experience with rooting a phone.
what I should mention: I've been in the same dilemma: that gold card method did sound complicated and the reports feared me a bit, too ;-)
There's one thing I'd suggest either way: I did follow the instructions carefully - step-by-step, after reading them carefully - twice at least and I've kept an eye on all warnings.
Regarding the other method: if I would have to choose between the two methods I most likely would do the gold card method again. Because it worked for me - sure - but after reading the respective threads, e.g. this one I would feel more safe to do it the hard way ;-)

Hey guys. I want to go ahead and start the process of rooting my HTC Wildfire, but the problem is, the current Revolutionary build supports only the 1.01.0001 HBOOT version. Mine is (you guessed it) 1.01.0002.

This is my method.
Run an RUU for wildfire.
- Download (RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_C_Radio_13.45.55.24 _ 3.35.15.19_release_141106_signed) from android forums.
- Connect phone to PC and run RUU
- This downgrads phone OS to eclair (android 2.1)
- Let it do the bizniss
- Revolutionize for S-OFF
- Root with unrevoked 3
- Flash CM7 and gApps
Hey guys. It all went great. I rooted today and am running Gingerbread 2.3.7. A big thank you to eventcom!

glad to hear that everything went well - as I said before: the risk is yours I could only tell from my experiences...
Regarding your question which thread I meant: yes, this mainly has been the source I tried to follow. But as I mentioned before I did read a lot (also in German...) and tried to collect the useful stuff and kinda sorted it later - prepared all hints for troubleshooting etc.
It's always a good idea to do so. If you have any serious doubts they most likely come from missing knowledge - so best idea: read even more ;-)
