newbie needs help. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok just got my htc desire today and i want to root it.
im not sure if i have a branded or unbranded device?
all i know is theres a t mobile splash screen when it starts up, theres no other writing on the phone or anything.
can i use the revoked method?

You have a branded phone. If using unrevoked it doesnt matter. Like to add using unrevoked is the easiest method.

oh ok i thought you needed a gold card or something
so guys can i use the revoked method?

unrEVOked doesn't need any Gold Cards. But the first thing you should do now is to record down your OS version and download the right RUU to unroot.
p/s: unrEVOked is very simple. Make sure the drivers are installed and all that jazz and you'll be fine.

Though Unrevoked does not need a goldcard, since you are having a branded Desire, creating a goldcard is the first thing you should do. You never know when a rooting process can go bad. Even a power failure on a PC can interrupt the flashing process. In such a case, you might need to restore the device to its original state, for warranty purpose or for solving the problem. In either case you will need a gold card. So create one right away!

so just to clarify, i should create a gold card, then use unrevoked method?

Yup.
Create a goldcard, store it someplace safe, and forget about it.
Then, root with Unrevoked.

And.. it would be helpful if you'd title future posts with the nature of the questions itself. Helps people help you better. If you would, please change the title of your first post to Need help rooting, or something similiar. That way people can search and find posts better..
All the best with the rooting!

will do in the future

As mentioned above, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the software version. Once you have it, go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
And if there is a file there matching your version number download it so you can always go back to stock

[Q] Rooting HTC Desire... -completely lost-

Hey guys,
I'll start with a heads up; complete newb here so I hope i have the right forum/section. Furthermore I appologise for my English, it is not my native language so I hope I can make myself clear. So far for the disclaimers.
Here's the situation; I have a Dutch HTC desire and I am absolutely lost in the rooting proces. I'll give you guys my specs first;
Phone
- HTC Desire running Android 2.2 Froyo from the OTA update
- Hboot version 0.92.0001
- NO Goldcard, regular microSD 4 gig that came with the device, haven't altered it
- Radio 5.09.00.20
PC:
- Windows 7 x64
- HTC Sync installed
Now I want root, preferebly with OpenDesire and A2SD so have been googling about the entire weekend now, but haven't found any guides that match my specs fully, havent got a clue where to start really with the rooting process. For instance; most downgrading guides talk about needing to use Hboot 0.92, where mine is 0.92.0001. Also some guides tell me I need a goldcard, others say I don't.
This is where I'm at right now, having read several guides these are the steps I think I have to take;
1. Backup everything using Mybackuppro
2. Downgrade using PB99IMG.ZIP. Is this correct, and will it work with my Hboot? Will I need a Goldcard for this?
3. Root the phone using Unrevoked. Will this work, concedering I have HTC Sync installed, and if no will a normal uninstall through the Windows programs uninstall be sufficient for "Uninstall HTC Sync completely" or are further meassures required? Will it work on my radio version, or is this not of any matter at this point?
I believe that at this point, my phone is worthless, right? There is no rom installed, so at this point I would need to install a rom. So on to step 4;
4. Install OpenDesire rom. I have read things about it having to be a zip file, the files I found though were .exe's Will the .exe do, or have I found the wrong files? Also I read that in order for the camera to work on OD, i need radio version 5.x, which I do. Will the rooting/downgrading proces make any changes to the radio version also?
5. Is this it? Have I missed anything, or are these roughly the steps I have to take to downgrade from 2.2, root, and install OD (which I believe also is a 2.2 version, with the JIT correct?)
Any tips, advises and remarks would be highly appriciated, coming from an ancient Nokia E65 I'm sort of unsure how to handle Android, how import small nuances like the exact version of Hboot are.
Also, if I have left out any important information please do not hesitate to ask, i'll reply ASAP.
Not one reply? Anyone?

You probably have the new phones which is with the SLCD screens. There is currently only 1 method to root those. But you need to operate with a black screen. Which means you won't be sure if you really pressed the right option or not. Try search for the SLCD root for HTC Desire.

Downgrading will require a goldcard if your phone is network branded. It is necessary to root your phone.

Still have the AMOLED version, not the SLCD one... Was one the first with a Desire in Holland, just sort of late with rooting it... and now there's hundreds of outdated tuturials, making it hard to figure out which ones still work

Ok, thx. I bought the phone without any form of network branding, your post implies that I will not be needing a goldcard then, correct? Or do I need it anyway for A2SD?
Right, what ROM is on it at the moment? IF it's 2.09.405.8 then do the following...
Download this file:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed_txt.zip
and rename it PB99IMG.zip (not PB99IMG.zip.zip!!) and copy to the root of your SD card. Turn phone off and boot into HBOOT by holding Vol-down whilst turning it on. Follow the instructions and allow it to update (assuming it works). Once done, reboot and you'll be back on 1.21.405.x and you can now root your phone using unrEVOked
OR
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
If you run this utility it will tell you if you need a goldcard. If you do need one, you can quit it, make one, and run it again.

The problem with the first method is that it corrupts your misc partition, which will need fixing. The second one takes care of everything.
Worked like a charm guys, thanks so much! Running OpenDesire right now, absolutely love it! Thanks again!

So need help perm rooting

Okay I have a G2, just got it and I need to perm root it. I looked at the sticky guide but most of the links aren't loading for me, don't know why, either thread isn't there or link expired or w/e. I don't know, but I need some help.
First, how do I find out if I have 1.72 or an earlier version
Second, do I use "rage"? method or VISIONary and what's the latest version of visionary?
Third, about how long does the process take?
Any help is appreciated.

Every thing you need to know about rooting is in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision just start reading from Rooting the Vision (G2/DZ) and DHD or you can read the whole page. Don't use VISIONary, you have a chance of getting stuck in a boot loop, use Rage and GFree. You'll need the android SDK to get ADB. I'm not sure how long rooting takes, I haven't done it yet as I don't have my G2 until next week but I have been reading about root for the past week. From what I know, 1.72 is only if you have a Desire Z. If you have any more questions, I'm sure me or another member can answer you.

If you have a Tmobile G2 (from your first post, I assume you do) you don't need to worry about 1.72 it for the Desire Z. There are three methods to root with, them being Visionary, Rage, gfree. Gfree by far has caused the least amount of problems. If you know ADB rooting should be pretty simple, just follow the wiki on rooting with gfree. If your not familiar with ADB, there are methods to root without having to use it. But its always good and recommended to have it installed and running. There are guide here to help walk you thru it, but if for some reason its to difficult or you don't quite understand it, like I said there are methods to root with out it. There is a modified way to run gfree with your home computer and terminal emulator on your phone. Also the visionary method too, now many people have had problems with visionary, I'm not one of them, it is how I rooted my phone, but I can't stress the importance of reading and putting the time into understanding what you are and want to do to modify your phone, far to many people act before understanding and run into many problems including bricking there phones, I know some of the threads are really long in this forum but that's no excuse, whenever I try something new I read the entire thread first start to finish because any problems you may have, the solution has probably already been givin somewhere in the thread. There is no rush to jump into something you don't understand, my suggestion is to invest the time to read and understand how to root you phone first.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Even if you root using rage, you can still install and use gfree on your phone. I can confirm that it works.
Just stay away from Visionary.

This.
This is my first Android phone and I was able to follow the Wiki and root it pretty easily. The only part I didnt do was installing the Engineering Hboot. Just cause it is labeled as optional and unnecessary and the warning about bricked phones scared me away from it.
This ADB Guide for Noobs was pretty helpful in the process too

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to root the phone then when I feel more comfortable, I'm going to flash the engineering HBOOT. It's not that I'm scared, well I sorta am but I would rather not do something that isn't necessary. I'm coming from a rooted G1 so I know what it does and everything, I just don't think its necessary. The way I look at is is this, if you flash the HBOOT then your a lot safer because you can use fastboot flash to save your self from a semi-brick, but at the same time, flashing the HBOOT is also dangerous because you can brick your phone beyond repair.
*bump*
Sorry guys, I know this is an old thread, but isn't it better to post on something existing rather than creating a new thread? Hopefully I'm right...
Anyhow, I'm a Sprint convert and I now have the G2. Rooting the Samsung Epic I had was super easy, because I downloaded a one-click script that did everything for me. However, I'm fairly tech-savvy and accomplished just about everything for the rooting procedures using gfree and rage.
However, when I use gfree_verify, I get the message 'verify could not initialize the device!'. I think I run into my problem when I get to this part:
# /data/local/tmp/root
# sync
when I run the first line, I get a message about file existing that it says to expect... but it also says that "the rest of the script should still run ok". Well, after I get the file existing message, it goes back to the prompt. If there was a script that ran after that message, wouldn't I see other messages before it returned to the prompt?
I hope I'm making sense... and I hope I posted this in the right place. I'm dying to get a Sense ROM on my phone, but I need to get some sleep for work tomorrow. Any help that everyone could provide would be EXTREMELY appreciated Thanks so much!!
...EDIT...
Apparently, despite my lack of luck with verification, root is in place in my phone and has stayed after reboot. I've flashed clockwork and have used Superuser access... all seems to be well! Thanks anyway

also made a slight mistake with my software version... its as follows
Android Vers... 2.2.1
Build Number 1.84.61.2 CL333804 Release Keys
Software 1.84.61.2
What have you tried so far, and where did it fail.
failed on the last test, because its locked to orange and they have their own os or sumit along those lines, but it was the last last thing that went tits up on the downgrade!

after trying the downgrade again, ive down everything it asks, im now on the bootloader screen and its come up CID incorrect Update Fail! press power to reboot
thats the part im stuck on, so either i need to unlock my phone... or try and find the 1.32 software that orange released part from that i have no idea what to do
Did you create a goldcard? If you successfully made a goldcard it wouldn't fail on the CID.
no i can't mate, i have no idea how to create one... ive tried to follow step by step guides and whatnot but i just can't get my head around it, its probably so easy i could do it blind but yeh im not that techi to work it out... would it help if i pay someone to unlock my phone? i seriously have no clue... i can jailbreak an iPhone with no issues whatsoever but thats a iPhone lol
Without a goldcard you can't downgrade. Unlocking will just remove the SIM lock, it won't root or otherwise modify you handset.
If your quick & install TeamViewer I can attempt to make a goldcard for you from your computer.
will do mate that would be awesome, ok where would i download teamveiwer?
scrap that ive downloaded it
Once you've installed it PM me the ID and 4 digit password.
ivve got that up and running
PM me the correct password, it should be 4 numbers
thanks everyone, and especially thanks to AndyHarney for creating my "goldcard" after many weeks of frustraition ive finally rooted that mofo lol, all tho now after all that ive forgotten what i was actually doing in the 1st place lol... i'm sure i wanted to put on Gingerbread or a custom rom
if anyone fancys giving me a hand with that i'd be seriously greatful lol
I personally use MrGaraks MIUI 1.41. Its iPhone-esque in appearance but it is essentially a very heavily skinned CyanogenMod 7. It gets better every week too as MIUI updates weekly on a Friday.
Your spoilt for choice really when it comes to ROMs.
So are you now rooted, with clockwork mod recovery?

Can it really be this simple??

Would lie to root my phone but i am scared! I've seen and read so many tutorials that my mind is full. It seems using unrevoked method is the easiest? I've had my desire nearly twelve months and use launcher pro.
Is it full proof (even for a dummy?)
After it is rooted how do i put the roms on?
Will i loose all the apps i have installed?
I suppose i'm only doing it to:
1: Get it running 2.3
2: Get rid of the low space warning.
Any info muchly appreciated.
Thanks Neil

Neil,
Unrevoked is a very easy process on the whole as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. Once you are rooted, go download Rom Manager from the market and you can use that to select many roms to download and install from directly inside that app.
You will want to get Titanium Backup and use this to ensure you backup all of your apps and their data. Once last thing, if you use Rom Manager, when it offers to do a nandroid backup before installing a new rom, ACCEPT THE OFFER.
If there is one thing you can never do too much it is a nandroid backup!
Good luck

You need the serial number from under the battery.
I understand that you must have read a thousand different tutorials on rooting and you are likely more confused than when you started out. I was the same...I read so much, I scared myself stupid! Without wantiong to load you with more info, I found these instructions http://www.t-mod.org/?page_id=11 to be very easy to follow and understand.
The site is actually Australian and the ROMs they link to have been modified for Australian use, but when you are instructed to download a ROM for use, just find one here and continue with the instructions. I recommend you start with something like this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038195 as it will require no special tricks to get working, as some other ROMs do. Once you have the idea, you can then flash whatever you like.
Above all, take your time. Set yourself a couple hours to do the procedure and follow each step carefully. Once you are done, you will be amazed how simple it really was
Software number is 2.25.771.1 I'm on 3 UK.
God knows why i wrote the other number in!
The serial number is HT07TPLO2916.
777Ace. That looks a more comlicate method than this one?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Mmmm, not sure. It really comes down to what you are comfortable with. I found the other site simple to understand, but I will admit I got pretty confused about using a USB stick to boot alpharev...the guy in your link uses a CD, which is a much simpler method imo.
But as I say, if it's easier for you to understand, by all means go that way...just remember to take your time and all will be well

If you still have question come back
Just go to htc.com > Support > ROM upgrade for HTC Desire (your Tel-co).
You really only need that RUU as a safety net in case something gets ballsed up and you need to restore to stock, but also handy if you do not have the 0.93 HBoot. Just run the upgrade before you start anything and the HBoot will update for you.

Uhm.. I'm not sure I got that right. Which one of your threads do you want me to read? Sorry, but I'm a total n00b at this. That's why I'm asking for help. Though, I think I've heard about that "PB99IMG"-method before, where you have to put the .zip file in the root of your SDcard, or something like that (?). The main problem is, I'm not sure how to go through with it myself.
I appreciate the help!
I'm willing to help, but you have to get the basics..
It's a complete guide on how to unroot. Click on my userid to go to my profile->Click->Statistics->Threads started by->"How to unroot..."
Droidzone, I just read your guide. It was very detailed and easy to understand, good job!
So, I should just follow the steps and unroot my phone? I'm not sure if I have to make myself a goldcard, because when i first rooted my phone, i managed it without making one. But im considering to make one anyway, just to be on the safe side.

You should definitely make a gold card. It is the difference between bricking a device and having to return it, and restoring it to a perfectly working form. It hardly takes 15 mins to make, and you can even make one of your existing card, save all the intermediate files safely and use that card as a non-goldcard too (though not recommended). All you need is the CID of your sdcard, and once you save it as a text file, you can make a goldcard any time you need without a phone. But for safety reasons it is best to check that a goldcard works by actually following the procedure to the end.
I made the guide when as a newcomer to the forum, I almost bricked the device. Lack of a goldcard was what my issue unsolveable..
Now, every time I visit the Q/A section (which is infrequent now), I see at least 10 recent posts which can be solved by my guide alone.. Someone ought to sticky it
There is one step that says I have to put the PB99IMG.zip into the root of my goldcard. I don't understand, how do I do that?
You dont know how to copy a file to sdcard??
Oh.. So you just have to copy the file to the SDcard?
Yup.................
Nevermind, then..
EDIT: I'm stuck on the Goldcard. Can't get the CID. It won't find it..

Well, I do have CyanogenMod on it. But I'm stuck in HBOOT-mode. I assume you did read the first post?
No, S-ON.
Formatted the SDcard, moved the PB99IMG.zip into it and booted the phone. I got much further than I did before. However, it has been remained stuck on the white screen for about 10 minutes. It says..
"Parsing ... [SD zip]
[1] Bootloader
[2] Radio V2
[3] Radio_Cust
[4] Boot
[5] Recovery
[6] System
[7] User Data
[8] Splash1
[9] Splash2 "
Am I doing something wrong?
Any thoughts on what I should do next?
