New To Windows Phone 7 - Windows Phone 7 General

So HTC Is Sending Me An HTC Trophy And I Was Wondering What I Should Know About Windows, I've Always Loved Windows, But Ever Since Android Came Around I've Been With That, Is There Any Tricks I Should Know? Best Apps? Apparently They Are Sending Me A Production Software For My Phone, But Idk What That Is? To My Knowledge It Already Comes With NoDo Sooo I'm Still Wondering.

If you love it now.. Wait till you get Mango , it brings out a lot of cool features , this is something that I saw a few days ago
http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2011/08/11/your-phone-talks-to-you-only-on-mango.html

Wow, I just noticed that. I think I might setup my bluetooth headset and just text with that when I am at home. Thank you for the tip!

It looks like HTC has heared us...

Problems Immediately
It doesn't work with my ROM which is 1.19.401.0 WWE
can maybe someone look into that? There were no new ROM updates, HTC says that WWE ROM is 1.19.479.0
Is there any info that goes with this?
Where did you find it?
htc official site. look ati it, but many are having the same problem challenger150 describet, me too. I agree with the one who said that they must have done it in a hurry, and so f****d up something with the version numbers.

Wow, my ROM is 1.14.161.5 - does that mean I have a really old version?
I have a Vodafone version and I got it just one week ago
i get the error message " This hotfix is not compatible with your device." on 1.19.404.0 (51489) NLD (dutch)
on the HTC homepage i see that this is for 1.19.404.1
yup, same here.
Solution for you
It is just an exe wrapper around a cab file.
To bypass the exe you just have to extract file's contents with winrar
and then recreate the cab file.
to install you can simply click on the cab you've just created
..and you're done

You also could simply extract the .exe, then rename the files according to the setup.xml and then copy the files into the \windows folder.
The point is, that these files are officially been made for a ROM-version I don't have on my phone (I admit, it couldn't be found anywhere either) and there have to be a reason for this.
I would not like to have to hardreset my device now if anything messed up.
I think I'll wait for the next information from HTC to come. Maybe they'll come up with a hotfixed hotfix ( ) or a new ROM version
First, Linox, you are genius. Followed what you said and got the info that phone is updated.
Second. I have one question which is more rhetorical than realistic. I believe that me, as well as other TP2 owners gave a lot of money for it (expect those who got it in poker game or similar ). The question is how is it that a phone which costs like 3-4 other (samsung, sony, blablabla phones) gets hotfixes that don't work? Why are Hotfixes necessary? How hard it is to give 100 phones to real HTC users and wait for respond from them? They would definitely see that there are some errors which NEED to be fixed before launching the phone. HTC is not a new company. They exist for at least 8 years now. They should know how phones should be made.
Finally, I got my phone from Frankuft airport a week after official release. The price was around 900 Eur. I believe that you guys paid something similar. More or less. How is it that a phone that should be Iphone killer (and it definetly looks like one) has more problems than that stupid Iphone? Do HTC guys have money to buy other phones and look how some things are made? Why do I have to read so much about entering registry, changing it and modifying it in order to make my phone work normally? I mean, all of you guys who do it and play around with your phones to make ours work THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I APPRECIATE IT A LOT. Maybe HTC should consider paying you to test their phones and make updates.

Would you be so kind to share your selfmade .cab file with us? So not everybody needs to install a .cab-maker and mess with the files for himself
According to your "rhetorical" question:
I believe you cannot test everything and everywhere. Even with 100 testers some users will experience other "issues". I state, that the best solution for this is a flexible and fast support -and this is where HTC sucks.
As soon as some users come up with a problem, HTC should work on the solution and come up with a fix as fast as possible.
The SMS-problem is know for long now and 1 1/2 months later they come up with a hotfix which does not work -too little, too late.
Overall, I have to say, the TP2 is a very stable and fast phone, considering the fact that it's Windows Mobile. Just think about the Blackberry Storm my girlfriend owns: 4th firmware update and still buggy as hell. Or think about the Nokia N95: years of experience in building phones and they release such a sleazy and buggy piece of crap for an large amount of money.
The SMS bug of the TP2 is bad but you can still use the windows-messaging so it's half as bad as it could be.
Hehe, think about the bugs that will come up when the first 6.5-ROM is released
LOL!!!
I don't even want to imagine that. Comments like "I bricked my TP2" and similar. That will be interesting definitely, and yes, you are right. Maybe 100 users wont solve anything but how is it that other phones don't have such problems or as you mentioned problems are solved but MUCH faster.
And finally, I placed the .rar file on rapidshare. You can download it, place it on phone memory or storage card and run. In second or so you will get info that operation has completed successfully.
I hope I did it right as explained in previous threads.

Dont forget to soft reset your phone
By the way, I tested it by sending 3 messages to my own number. The thing works and I didn't received strange information from operator that this phone number doesn't exist.

You cannot test this by sending a message to your own number. The first replay to a number will always work. only when you send a 2nd, 3rd, etc. message, it will go wrong. When you are sending a message to yourself, you will always replay 1 time because you will recive the message immidiatly...
Ranney
HTC official support told me to wait a few days since it's still a work in progress, so probably they will release another version or a corrected one for this hotfix.
Kinda reminds me of the "Hotfixes" for the Touch HD, which initially broke more than they fixed....
Quality control anyone?

Don't have any idea. I didn't touch the files. I simply un-rared them and rar-ed them again. As explained.
All of my contacts are there. And they show up when calling together with the photos.
Try maybe syncing with Outlook again.

I paid for it that money. It was in Frankfurt Airport. Since I live in croatia, this phone will most probably cost even more. Just like it was with other HTC models.
Only in "developed" countries these phones have normal price tag since HTC sells there directly. Here, we don't have HTC office but a sub-licensee who will not even fix this phone if something happens while on international warranty.
So, yes I paid around 900Euro to get mine. If you need I think I still have a receipt somewhere, I'll be glad to upload it.

Should i buy the tilt 2 or wait for WP7S/ at&t android phones

I wanted to buy the tilt 2/Rhodium but now since windows phone 7 is ditching basically every phone on the market and really the progress of android on the Rhodium isnt as far along as my Kaiser yet (which is understandable)and ive pretty much seen all there is to see with Winmo6.5.5 on my Fuze should i just wait until android is a little more funtional on the rhodium or wait until the At&t android devices come out later this year

Android is a very nice OS with a lot of functionality. Haven't used it beyond basic usage, but it seems very responsive. If you like the android look at this option:

It all depends on what you want out of your phone. For me personally, I really like a full keyboard plus a touch screen. From what I've seen, WP7 is just a touch screen and no keyboard. Also, the whole layout of everything does not look that enticing to me. But that's just my opinion, like I said, it's just whatever fits your needs.
I would personally wait to see atleast more detail on WP7S. MIX is this month, which will give a clearer picture for developers and thus what 3rd party applications and hubs are gonna be like. Also you should see more hardware prototypes, like the LG that did have a keyboard (so that shouldn't be a concern).
Then if you decide to get a Touch Pro 2/Tilt 2, the deals should be better. Or honestly you would probably prefer to move to an OS that will be supported in the future, regardless of it is Android or WP7S. There should be several WP7S devices to choose from in the Holidays. Atleast 2 (one with and one without keyboard) from HTC, and atleast one from LG, Samsung, and SonyEricsson.

I really like it up until I flip it to landscape. starts looking like this:
If I were in your position, I would personally wait for awhile. AT&T typically offers their standard HTC Windows Mobile smartphone with sliding keyboard for a year since its release, so you should have until around mid-October 2010 before they'll stop stocking it, and you can still buy it for awhile after then until they completely sell all their inventory. If you don't like the other Android devices on AT&T, you can still buy the Tilt2. If you buy the Tilt2 now, you'll still have to deal with Windows Mobile for awhile since porting takes a long time for a fully working build, and even longer for a native ROM. So unless you REALLY want a new Tilt2 right now, I'd wait and see if any superior options enter the market beforehand, since you have quite a while before you are stopped from buying the Tilt2.
There's ALWAYS going to be the 'next best thing' right around the corner.
Who knows, maybe WM7 gets delayed a year. Maybe by the time WM7 is out, they've already announced plans for 7.5 or 8.0 or whatever.
My suggestion is ... if you need a phone now, the TP2 is a GREAT option. If you dont need a phone, then wait until a better option comes along and reassess.

I've abandoned the other sense UI, I am now using the following, landscape mode works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=604146
Make sure when you install to keep it on sense UI, i've tried clicking espresso and I got install errors. Haven't tried the Omnia setting on install yet either, I might give it a go later. All of the installs were done on clean SPB 3.5/Win 6.5.

I might give it a go later today, but so far it just doesn't seem as polished as spb + mobile sense.

androkkid does not support landscape mode either it seems.
If you install both of those there is a program which allows you to switch between all of them. Shell TF3d Titanium switcher:

new user..

hi guys, right i dumped my blackberry storm 2 and went for a HTC desire, because to be honest i got tired of waiting around for blackberry to update there dated OS, i allways got the latest Beta OSs etc, but it wasnt really going anywhere, was it the right choice?? i suppose time will tell.. but am looking forward to getting bang into this device to see what i can get out of it.
anyway wanted to just say hello!
Cheers, Rams

How long do we think it will take to root?

With full access to the ROMs and EVOs now, it doesn't seem like it will take long to me. Do any informed experts have any ideas?

took me 7-8 hours to root the samsung moment once we got a copy of the leaked android 2.1....this phone is setup completely different and i dont physically have it to test anything.
im doing some research and hope to figure out a solution, but it'll be hard for me to test it for sure.
if anybody else has some insight with previous HTC and android experience, that'd be great to hear some other opinions?!
or maybe an HTC phone with similar file system structure which was rooted?
joey do u plan on getting this phone? i had a moment but was lucky enough to get the evo off someone that went to i/o.....it would be awesome to have your kernels working on this bad boy!!!

yea, im heavily considering it. i qualify for my upgrade so for $199 and giving up a hardware keyboard for all the great hardware features this has, i think its worth it!

ah dont even worry about the onscreen keyboard it takes a second to get used to it. that was the reason why i picked the moment over the hero but i still found myself using swype lol. as of now im just using the htc keyboard and its pretty slick so far just have to train the dictionary.
i work for sprint, my indirect rep came in with his evo the other day and so i installed swype 1.25 on it. FREAKIN. AWESOME. also, MAD props to joeykrim. i have the moment and he has done SO many wonderful things with it. but it looks like im going to htc...
EDIT: joey, i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see you move to the evo and see what that genius brain can cook up. if you ever need a tester, im all over it. been with you on sdx since the days you and speedrabbit were bustin down and fixing 1.5.
IM getting the EVO day of release and maybe another for testing. Let me know when you want to get this thing a try. i just hope it doesn't brick XD
knowing joeykrim, once he gets his grubby hands on an Evo - it'll be rooted there soon after.
glad to see some familiar names over here guys...
Looks like the question has just about been answered :>

Old school Palm devs working on it... even without details released, I'd stake my farm on it being 100% legit.
Important note - I have no farm .
HTC Evo 4G rooted in record time

Yeah but in case you guys haven't heard the shipped 2.1 rom you guys get may not be final. Sprint could easily push an update to close off root. Just look in the hero section, the final 2.1 RUU is still not able to be rooted by our best devs. Im not trying to worry anybody but it is a possibility.

hello, your Desire will not be branded.. thanks to the people (and me) who had complained about the 1.24.161.3 uptade (vodafone branded, very buggy & slow!)
enjoy the phone, dont root or do anything with it as it is your first android phone so it would be very likely to brick the phone if you do not read & or know enough
I am pretty sure you will have 2.2, however 2.1 is not that bad so no poit messing around with the phone to get 720p etc.. for me- it made no differace, just wanted the horrible branding off!
nice to see someone live close to me.. never saw anyone clocer than london..
hope this helps & enjoy the phone

welcome, to the dark side !!
thank you all... that would be sweet if its not branded like my tp2 was....
im inbetween slutton & croydon and work in east london atm.
ive heard alot of good things about android, only every really had a lil play with 1 or 2 android phones in the shops, couldnt test the internet ect...
but i wasnt keen on flashing my phones, must be why i got so annoyed with the tp2.
i will check out the link posted, and i will probly be posting up about more stuff if i cant find it in the search function.
You wouldn't be dissappointed with the Desire, infact, you wouldn't be dissapointed with any of hTC's android phones, especially unbranded ones. I strongly suggest you to flash a custom rom tho, they are quicker and more efficient than stock roms and should lengthen your battery life compared to normal stock roms.
Well I hope you will enjoy the phone, and have fun in the Desire forum
started using my desire last night, havnt evan had time to set anything up on it, i need to get used to the touch screen, soo used to having touch & type lol
have installed a few things such ass whatapp & juice defender because the people i work with rate that app highly with there galaxy S's
