[Q] transfering Office Docs

Hi All
simple question.
can i transfer office files to and from wp7 to win7 via the usb cable?

Yes, that's great and very convenient. WP7 is a huge progress in this respect.
You can also print the office document and send it to yourself via FedEx
(I want my USB mass storage back)

yes that is a real big - for wp7
Could be added simple by microsoft , just make another folder called Documents , and let it sync
same as Music, videos , potcasts , pictures .
but we early adopters have to live with it I think .
I think they (Microsoft) will change things like this really quick .

Agreed. I hope so.
Otherwise I believe many users will jailbreak their WP7 phone in order to get this essential feature back.

lol , only tweakers like us will jailbreak the phone (even when it isn't needed) , 99% of the users don't do that.
I know a lot of people that have a iphone and non of them are jailbreaked .
and that is the same for android and wm 6.*.*

Yeah I think they focused too much on Sharepoint integration.
Which by the way only supports Sharepoint 2010 when most businesses haven't upgraded yet.
I agree there should be document syncing in Zune just like there was in Active Sync.

thing was, i was out for the day working away had no gprs dongle as i left it at home and had a word doc to send. ohh i thought i know ill bluetooth it to my mozart no cant do that, ohh ill use the cable no cant to that. So it turns out office mobile is a waste of time on my mozart.

Also, there are too many services: Sharepoint, Live, Zune, Hotmail, Skydrive, Mesh, etc... It is a REAL MESS.
Office documents shall be easily transferrable via USB cable, from any PC.
ZUNE (or any specific soft) cannot be the answer since not all the PC will have Zune on it.

a simple tip for sending things to your computer
if you have a PC you can use the "map network drive" to create a drive which will sync with your skydrive.
so i use that to drag and drop files onto skydrive on the PC which i can access easily on my phone.
or you can download windows live mesh!

I'm an Android user so don't know if this applies to Windows Phone, but many people seem suprised when I tell them I xfer docs, music, files, etc quickly & easily with Dropbox. It really doesn't get much easier. Sure, a lot of people already know this, but many seem to overlook it too! But bring a new platform and all, there may not be a Dropbox app.
Also, I use ftp lots too. I have both a server and client app on my phones and they both work great. Again, not sure if this applies either tho, but maybe. I use Swiftp as a server, and andFtp as a client, both of which work great. If by chance they are available on WP. If not, maybe there is something similar.
Anyway, just some ideas. I probably don't know what I'm talking about tho, so ill go back to my own section . Hope ya find what you're looking for. I hate when I need a file and dont have access to it. Luckily there are some great tools available to make sure that rarely happens!
PS: Google Docs seems to be getting more and more serious in the mobile world as well. Today the just added editing capabilities on mobile devices.

WM 6.X.X has Dropbox or Box.net clients also (Kinoma or ruttensoft Cloufiles).
But the problem is still here and still the same:
If someone has some office docs in his PC and you want to import them you will not ask this person if you can install Dropbox on his pc. And what if he does not have Internet connection?

this is my point i wanted to transfer them so i could send via phones gprs signal. my laptop had no wifi or a gprs signal as i didnt have a dongle.
any other ideas???

SharePoint isn't a consumer Service. It's part of what Microsoft used to call BackOffice back in the day, if they still used that term (along with IIS, Exchange, SQL Server, etc. - basically what comes with Microsoft Windows SBS).
Live Mesh is part of SkyDrive, just like Windows Live Photos was killed and integrated into SkyDrive. Office Web Apps are also part of SkyDrive. It's one service. There is just an application you install on you PCs to Sync Files from them onto that specific area of you SkyDrive.
Windows Live Photo Gallery Syncs directly to SkyDrive. Office Web Apps save directly to SkyDrive and if you use Microsoft Office (desktop Applications) with SkyDrive it saves directly to SkyDrive. Hotmail/Calendar/Contacts are all basically one service. To-Do Lists (i.e. Tasks) are integrated into Calendar and supported fully by Windows Live Mail, as is all functionality of those components.
There are basically 3 Services: SkyDrive, Hotmail, Zune - all running off the same Windows Live ID (if you're organized).

Use SkyDrive. Most people won't wait until they get into basically a no-signal area to get their files transferred over.

If you use Microsoft Office (2003 and above) to edit a file on SkyDrive it automatically maps it as a "Network Place" on your computer, BTW, after you open the first file.

Still I think it's a bit complicated, and services shall be more integrated.

I think they will have issues trying to integrate them "more" than they already have.
Couple Windows Phone 7 with Windows 7 + Live Essentials, and it's hard to get more integrated with such a good workflow [than they already are].
I'm sure there are areas where the integration can be made tighter, though.
Also I made a typo. I said "... iTunes isn't integrated into mobileMe for Microsoft..."
Microsoft should be "Apple."

Adding Word Documents to WP&
I'm confused on how to send word documents to WP7. I added the documents to Skydrive but I don't see them in my phone. Anybody know what is the ebst way to do it? Thank you

Calendar Syncing

I don't have a WP7 phone and am wondering about the calendar. Is it true that if you have google or windows live calendar you can only sync one calendar? I have multiple calendars set up (personal, business, wife etc.) and want to know if a WP7 phone could be set up like this.

At the moment, WP7 will only sync your default calendar from each account. So you can't directly access subscribed calendars etc... I would imagine this will be fixed in an update as it simply doesn't make sense to allow subscribed calendars in outlook, windows live etc... and NOT on the phone!

Yes it doesn't allow other shared calendars to be viewed but it seems even on the iPhone it's not possible (not sure about that though). So it may be that only Android has this function for Google Calendar.
What I do is to have a live tile that leads me straight to the mobile version of Google Calendar that would allow me to view everything from the browser.

So if I’ve two Windows live Calendars – say Appointments & sports – I can only add one..
The Windows Phone 7 developers must really have no lives to omit this function. They probably don’t even use Windows Live.
I suspect Microsoft employees would have their own in-house calendar software. If I were the big boss I’d insist all employs use Windows Live. I’m sure that’d motivate them to fine-tune their products.
FYI – I use nuevasync on my Windows ‘Mobile’ to access my iCal through Goggle Calendar (though gCal has been particularly unreliable lately).

there was a rumor going around that it would be fixed up in the first update... but who knows. we'll just have to wait and see.

I Why would you need separate calendars when you can assign different colors to the accounts? I have both my work and personal calendar on my Surround. Work shows up in red and personal is blue.
I do not have a Google calendar but I would think you would be able to sync it too.

ummm your question is kind of ironic
you question the point of having seperate calendars (within 1 account) by suggesting a method that's more tedious (having separate calendars in separate accounts.)
windows live/hotmail allows multiple calendars, you can work on the same calendar and just list them under the diff calendars....isn't that more convenient than maintaining 2 different calendars across 2 accounts?

DOH! I misread the "or". I thought he meant he had 2 serperates and was worried he couldnt sync both to his device.

Yep. Sure is.
1. However, it’s no longer free. The basic subscription is 15 bucks a year – which isn’t much.
2. In the ‘email & account’ settings – Nuevasync (listed as gmail) prefers to be set to download new content ‘as item arrives’, or manually.
I initially had it set to download every hour, but it kept saying ‘unable to complete sync’ or something like that.
While Nuevaync works fine, I’m thinking of transferring to Windows Live calendar as my main calendar. Google Calendar has been unreliable – especially with iCal feeds. It’s displaying my iCal feeds in GMT time zone (a known issue) & it screwed up all my recurring appointments for some unknown reason.
Windows Live Calendar lets you mark events as private, which hides events if the calendar is shared – a must have feature for me.
Of course it would be nice if WP7 supported iCal feeds directly. But as I’m learning with WP7 – you make do. Compared to MinMo 6.1, I’m prepared to cut it a lot of slack because it’s just so damn nice to use.
P.S. – if anyone knows a way of incorporating an iCal feed into a default Windows Live calendar that would be great. And I’m not talking about downloading the feed & then importing it into the calendar. I’m talking about a cloud sync i.e. iCal event to WL calendar in real time. But I suspect this isn’t possible.

Funny you say that, because that's exactly what I'm looking for: a cloud based iCal (MobileMe) <--> Windows Live solution. Though I'm sure no such animal exists. I thought Google calendar could work as an intermediary, but that's looking doubtful as well. Apparently when Apple went full CalDAV last Fall, they stopped allowing change access outside their own internal product.
It's not looking good currently for a cloud based calendar sync solution if my wife and I want to have differing phone platforms when MobileMe is involved. Ah Apple...

Syncing stuff over multiple platforms a recipe for a nightmare. Especially anything that involves plugging in a USB. I tried with Outlook, but ended up with appointments doubling etc.

Outlook as a RSS reader

I've been mostly disappointed in feed readers for WP7, with none being really as good at displaying content as I would like.
Then I just realized: you can open and synchronize RSS feeds folders that were entered in Outlook on your WP7 device.
From what I've seen so far, it displays the content just perfect. As you all know, the email app is lightning quick... The organisation is a bit lacking, as you can't agreggate them to a single folder, but maybe a set of rules in Outlook could arrange that.
Just thought I'd share my find.

Microsoft killing MyPhone!

At WWDC keynote, world saw a giant called Apple kill the paid MobileMe and launch iCloud. Now, the MobileMe killer service , MyPhone by Microsoft is about to see its own end!
Today, Microsoft announced that the service will stop syncing the content from Windows Mobile 6.x, 7th August, 2011 onwards. According to official documentation here, the service will stop saving content to the cloud. The contacts, calendar entries and photos saved till 7th of August will be moved to the Skydrive space corresponding to the MyPhone Live Id. Other content like videos, documents and browser favorites (if anybody bothers about IE favorites) will have to be downloaded and backed up on the local computer manually. Article also mentions that the MyPhone site will be shut down on October 6, 2011. Though Microsoft promises to preserve data for one complete year and to provide hard copies in form of CD and DVD, is says nothing about pricing, shipping charges and region support.
On the side note, Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.x is also being shut down on July 15th, 2011. I wonder whether anybody even uses it. Developers who keep their apps on the marketplace might be concerned though.
So, it seems clear that Microsoft is in the process of discarding Windows Mobile completely, as expected. But we did want MyPhone service to be alive, didn't we? Correct me if I am wrong but, there's no service on any of the platforms which syncs content, especially SMS, so much smoothly.
What do you people think about this? Is Microsoft coming up with something better for Windows Phone 7? Are we about to see something amazing with the launch of Mango? Any leaked news from 'secret' sources? Please, discuss positively and make posts after voting, explaining why you chose particular option.

Well as of now, we all know there isn't a decent alternative to MyPhone on any of the platforms! Though, WP7 and Android have contacts in sync with corresponding accounts. All we can officially and easily do is to use Windows Live on device to sync contacts along with mail or use Activesync and set it up to sync with Google as exchange server. Last but not least (and a bit annoying) use outlook and cable!

For all those peeps missing MyPhone
Have you tried this. I have found it to be a good alternative to MyPhone.

actually i feel google sync is way better for contact and calendar sync as compare to myphone. Editing the data is much easier inside gmail "my contact" and google calander.
But for sms and document, i don't any decent piece of online sync that's as good as myphone.

I've been trying to upload a photo to Facebook using My Phone from my Motorola Q9h, but for the past few days, I've been getting the "Unexpected Error" message. Has anyone else been getting this?

Hey try FUNAMBOL . it can sync all your info to any platform ,be it apple ,windows or android .

I never use My-Phone, neither Marketplace I use.
It would be cool if MS close down Marketplace for WP7 too.

Do you use any Microsoft thing on your HD2? What you're going to do if they close WP7 marketplace? With WinMo it was okay as it was grown up installing CABs. But for WP7, generalized method is marketplace, and it just works! Anyway, if you don't use MyPhone, I guess you never gave it a try. Its one of very few things from Microsoft which work surprisingly well!

I did try My-Phone and don't need it.
To sync my contacts and calendar I use Google Exchange or sync with my desktop.
That's all I need.
And if I like to install a cab I install a cab, no Marketplace is needed for that as well isn't?
All these Marketplaces make people more depended to one manufacturer.
Cabs/apps can be provided in many other ways.

The m:IQ service seems to be good with Sync for Windows Mobile & Android devices for Contacts, Text Messages (SMS), Calender, Calls, Photos & Video and Bookmarks.
So over all this service seems to be promising (no mobile tracking though) all good so far. Also we can use MyPhone to get all my stuffs from MS and Sync back to m:IQ. We need to see how the sync is working for all supported components like 2 way sync for all components...

You had said they should close WP7 marketplace. Its nice. Ya, nobody would want WM6.5 marketplace. And i don't think marketplace is going to make us dependent! We always perform out-of-way things. We have Android market and we install APKs too!
Regarding Google Exchange, it would be too great if it could do SMS!

what happens now? texts messages will be moved to skydrive space too?

I too, dont use market place neither myphone. If I need to install any utility I just need the cab for that. Simple...

Windows phone 7 and Outlook Tasks?

hello, how well does Windows phone 7 sync with Outlook tasks?

as far as I know, Outlook is unable to synchronize tasks to the cloud via the Hotmail Connector. So you wont be able to get your outlook tasks to your phone. However WP7 does support tasks and so does Windows Live. You can create and view them in the Calendar Hub (swipe to the left). You'll just be unable to synchronize Outlook with them. You could contact the Windows Live team to check, wether tasks synchronization will be included in the next Connector Version or not.
If your tasks are stored on a Exchange Server you will be able to view them in special apps.

To-Dos in Windows Live are not Tasks, they're To-Dos. That is why they are named differently. You can't set Recurring To-Dos for example. For someone who seriously uses Outlook Tasks, Windows Live Calendar To-Dos are useless. Trust me, I've tried harder than I care to say.
I just sync my Outlook Tasks to my iPod Touch through iTunes and use that.
Both Windows Live and Google Tasks/ToDos are pretty rubbish, IMO.

Almost correct. Since Mango you don't need 3rd party apps to view, set up and edit Outlook tasks when using an Exchange server. It's part of the Windows Phone calender. But some apps provide more features than the calender does.

I believe exchange server is a Microsoft's business product. Something that a normal consumer do not have access to. Does that mean I am pretty much out of when it comes to taking my Outlook's tasks mobile except for as N8ter suggested using iTunes and an Apple device.
I want to avoid using Apple device at any cost.

I took O365 account for 6eur a month. Gives me own cloud with exchange email, calendar, tasks and contacts sync perfect with my WP7. I also have Onenote synced to the O365.
Yes, its not free but Im happy I took it.

I never used iCloud, but assume O365 is way more powerfull.. Its like GoogleDocs + all I wrote before.
You have your own cloud to sync everything I mentioned and you can also share office documents to non O365 users. You can decice what documents you share and to whom you share that specific document to. And like I wrote before you have all office tools, word, excel, powerpoint and onenote as browser based applications too.
If you want to sync onenote with your home computer(s) you need Office 2010 installed.
You get an address for the 6eur a month (something like [email protected], I dont remeber but you get the idea), but I took myowndomain.com for 10usd/ year to get my email as I want m([email protected])
Its is pretty cool to have my own exchange server + all the other things I wrote.
Also I took in to consideration that if I would ever change mobile platform, exchange would always be able to sync my contacts and email to the new device without doing other changes.

No. Apple iCloud is similar to SkyDrive, which is also free of charge. Sharepoint is much more powerful and secure.

Since the Mango update Tasks sync with Windows Phone 7.
If you sync with an exchange server, tasks that you view in Outlook will be on your phone under Calendar
Under settings for email accounts, for Outlook, there is a checkbox for Tasks.
Then, tap the Calendar tile.
swipe to the to-do tab.
See your tasks there.
From a task, you have the options Complete Edit and the ...
... reveals 3 more options. delete, postpone a day, and do today.

Sorry, mixing things up. Office 365 gives you Sharepoint functionality to share Office files and sync OneNote with your phone, as well as Exchange for Outlook functionality (email, calendar, contacts, tasks). So you get quite a lot for something like $6 a month.

You don't need Sharepoint Workspace for Office 365 - Sharepoint Online can be used entirely through the web.
In fact, you don't even need Office desktop at all to use Office 365 Although if you have desktop Word / Excel etc, you can switch from the browser Word / Excel to desktop version by clicking a button (this doesn't work in the Google Chrome browser). Web versions are quite good but have limited features.
Another nice thing is that the mailbox size for Outlook online is 25GB and so far, very fast
I think MS offer a 30-day trial so you can test it out before paying any money.

Thanks, I am waiting for my Omnia 7 to arrive, and once it does. I will sign up for a 30 days of Office 365 and see if I get this going.

I just sync my Outlook Tasks to my iPod Touch through iTunes and use that.
Both Windows Live and Google Tasks/ToDos are pretty rubbish, IMO.

I am looking at Outlook right now at work. My Outlook Tasks are synced to my Windows Live To-Dos, which I guess you are not disagreeing with. However, within Outlook I do not see the ability to set recurring tasks, this is only possible within the Calendar section of Outlook.

There is a button for recurrence in outlook. You not being able to find it does not make it not exist. I've been using outlook since office 97. it has almost always had recurring tasks.
And paying $for a redundant service to sync tasks I'd terrible value proposition.
