[Q] JELP!! Desire HD goes wrong when overheat - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I need some help with that, because i'm up of this...
At first, sorry for my level of english
A while ago i flashed a new rom, with a new radio, and a new kernel. When i'm using it everything is OK, but after a continous use, the Desire HD start getting hot some processes stop (everything about Google, or htc.com.phone, htc.com.messages ...) Its very annoing, i have to unplug the battery, wait for a while, and start again.
Can this be related with the radio i have installed? its the last option I know. I flashed a lot of different roms withouth success (Cyanogen, LeeDroid, KingDroid...)
Thank you

Have you overclocked it?

Not I think, some roms install setCPU, but its up to 1024 Mhz.
At the beggining, i used to set the speed auto between 240 - 768 Mhz to save battery. When i saw it was wrong, i choose the normal option, 1024 Mhz, and now, for example, with the LeeDroid mod, i dont have installed any overclock program

It sounds like a hardware fault... Did this happen with stock ROM also? Also, check the temperature(there are a few apps that can do this, I use temp+cpu pro, but you can try and find a free one) at which these anomalies occur, and paste them here...

Okay, i will try some apps about temperature, and setcpu with the stress test and see what happen... i think it starts when i tried to flash a radio with rom + kernel.
May be restoring the whole phone to his original brands may be solve the problem.

If this is happening with different roms, your best bet would be restoring it to factory settings(unroot, s-on, etc, you'll find guides here how to do all that), if problem persists, send it for repair...

Hi, Now i provoke it to get warm the Desire HD.
Its about 38 degrees, but when I try now to make any benchmark with the setCPU, the program stops. All google apps now stops too, and the option I have its wait to get cold.
The setCPU frequenzy is between 245Mhz-1036Mhz, so its not overclocked.
Hmmm when did you said where could I find one manual to restore the whole phone to default?

38 degrees is not that hot as far as I know, maybe there's another issue, not overheating, but flash stock ROM, just to see what will happen...
Start with this, it really depends what did you do to your phone(radio s-off/eng s-off), but just follow these few links from the thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537

Thank you, i gonna try to restore everything. Hope that works... thank you !!

No problem, report back once you fix it, I'm curious about what was happening...

Thank you, finally, ive restored
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.3_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.15_M3_release_155032_signed
(Europe Version)
So that means that the Radio, Kernel, Rom and Firmware are now default?
Sorry for being ignorant Now I install Visionary to install CWM

So finally I flahsed RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.3_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26 .03.02.15_M3_release_155032_signed
Super CID: 1111111
S-On
...
S- Off
Eng- Off
Via Bootloader, I made "Factory reset"
S- Off (again)
Eng- off (again)
And I'm installing LeeDroid HD 3.3.3
I just have one question: The Radio and the Kernel is the standard or the LeeDroid related, is it?
Thank you !!

Leedroid will install his own kernal. This is not causing a problem.
I cant see how it could be the radio either.
If problem persists then it will be hardware fault. Restore to stock send for repair.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App

It continues not working. Today, while it was charging, all programs suddenly stops again :\
This time I had luck, because I could open setCPU and when i did a stress test for a while, it report no errors. And I saw the battery temperature was 41ºC
I think may be is the battery, in 25 minutes the battery was charged about 50%, it's impossible because its too much. when its getting full, the charge is more slowly and the device is not so hot as at the beggining.
The device was restored to original brand new firmware, so I discard is something about software.
And hardware... its very difficul to show this problem to SAT, and i dont have the warranty paper filled, because I bought it to another person half a year ago
PD: I say its the battery because last month I used it as GPS and it was very very very hot because the sun. May be that affected the battery cells, if the hot affects the whole phone, i shoud have more problems, is it?

[Q] freezing problem

Hi everyone!
first, happy new year!
I have a problem with my desire...it freezes in a way that the pulling the battery out is the only thing that helps...it doesn't respond to any button, the screen os off and I can't wake it up
it's rooted with unrevoked, clockwork recovery
tried different roms, the best for me is baadnwz dhd port...
been on that for a while and didn't have the freezing problem, then I flashed the miui..
went back to baadnwz and it started to freeze...a few times a day
then I reflashed it, uninstalled the font changer and that helped...for two days(thought that was the problem) but tonight(~36h from the clean install of the rom) it froze again...
so, I don't think it's the rom, obviously it is not the font changer...
why is this happening, has anyone encounter this before, is there a solution?
please advise, what should I do?
thank you
For what it's worth...
If you can get it back to stock ROM, then do so. Then take it back to the place you bought it and demand a brand new replacement. I would even go so far as to note/print a few pages of some the forums as evidence of the widespread problem.
If my (and many other people's experiences) on here are anything to go by, then your problem will only get worse...and let's face it, whoever has heard of a electronic non-software related problem getting better on it's own? Having read just about every available post on the subject I've concluded that no amount of flashing/reflashing/fiddling is going to fix it.
Sorry to be negative about it, but them is just the facts as I see them.
hmm...so it's like that huh?
what do you mean "if" I can go to the stock rom?
can't I flash the original rom, or ruu or something?(I don't know, never tried something like that)
but then again, I'm not sure that it isn't a software problem...I'm just lurking around to see if anyone has encountered this before and solved it....
if all else fails, I'll flash a clean rom without restorin my apps and see how it goes from there...
just my experience

In all honesty, you may be able to reflash back to stock ROM. It may well depend on what firmware you have on your phone and whether your phone is branded (mine is T-Mobile UK). I know when I originally got mine and rooted it, it was hboot 0.83. It went wrong (external speaker stopped working). I was able to flash it back to stock ROM and I sent it back to HTC. When I finally got it back after 8 weeks (long story involving HTC incompetence and bad luck/incompetence with UPS), it was on hboot 0.93.0001. I rooted it with Unrevoked and installed LeeDroid 2.2f ROM. Shortly afterwards, it started to freeze/reboot. However, everything I've read so far leads me to believe LeeDroid wasn't the cause of the freeze/reboot fault. The problem is far too widespread (just Google 'HTC Desire reboot freeze problem') for it to be caused by a particular custom ROM.
Anyway, the upshot for me is that no matter what I've tried, I haven't been able to get it back to stock ROM and therefore, can't send it back for repair/replacement.
I sincerely hope you have better luck than me.
well, I'll see how it goes..
thank you for your answers
is there a way that I can make a log or something to see whether an application is doing this or something else?
well, I think I solved my problem, and for further reference here's a post that I did in another thread where this was disccused..
trikpa said:
just to let you guys know, I don't have any more freezes
some say it's because of the sense rom, some it's the dhd rom, others told me it's the radio or the ril files....
tried all of that plus few more things and nothing...
well, it turned out to be my backup(or an app in it..)
I always backed my apps and data with my backup pro, very nice app that restores everything....but the last rom flash I did, I didn't restored my apps&data and started fresh installs...and no freezing
I don't know what exactly caused problems, but one more thing that may be responsible...I flashed "font changer" and changed system fonts on my phone...and then backed my apps...maybe that's he deal...dunno...
anyways, I'm back with a killer phone with the best rom out there - baadnewz's

Do you still have any issues with the phone freezing sometimes when charging from A/C?
Mine doesn't freeze as much as it used to since updating the RIL files but being left charging seems to upset it

OK, that sounds good. I only usually recover a few items using Titanium backup but next time that I flash a ROM update. I'll start it all from scratch and hope to get the same result as you.
I don't know, maybe it was a specific app but I don't have the time nor the will to test each one of them
I've got the same problem. Now that I read your post it makes sense.
Restored my apps trough titanium backup and 5 hours later my phones freezes.

Yes, I've solved my problem by buying a new SD card.
This time from Kinsgstond instead of Sandisk.
Hope it solves your problem too.
My phone freeze after charfing while its off. I noticed that it freezes when it says "preparing SD card". This happened twice so far

well, I did buy a new 8GB card, but it never occured to me that it could be the problem....I think it didn't freeze right after I switched cards...
for now I flashed a newer version of the rom I'm using and will see how it goes...if not, I'll switch cards again
thanks for your answer

I'm curious
Well so far I have reflash the phone after a factory reset + wipe with no app restored via backup. It is performing ok so far. Last freeze was 2 days ago. I will wear down the battery to get a chance to charge it up this afternoon. I will see if it freezes again.

help pls... :)

My Desire is rooted and running a custom ROM however ever since I've flashed my the first custom ROM my phone keeps warming when I use it for a while and Randomly reboots... I'm at my end as no ROM can escape this issue and I cant solve it!!!!!!!!
Ok enough venting.. Im taking it in for repairs....I'll follow the 'how to unroot' guide, can someone please advise on a stock ROM to use for the Vodacom network in South Africa so I can adjust the phone accordingly...
Thanks!!
Repair for a software problem? Do you wipe all data and all caches when installing a new rom?
Yes I do... and I've tried a few ROMs
I googled the rebooting problem and came up that 1000's of folks have this problem... could be the motherboard or something...?
My Desire usually heats up a bit when I use it for more than 10-15 minutes without any break (battery widgtes show a temeparture of up to 42°C), especially when browsing while on 3G. This has never caused me any kind of problem, like it hasn't for lots of others as well, so there may be nothing wrong with your device.
As for the reboot issue, have you tried flashing another kernel? You could try one of coutts kernels or a vorkKernel, both worked really fine for me and have very good ratings around here
Tried a couple kernels with ... no difference...

A boot up problem can be anything, just about anything but is usually related to software. Send it in for repair but install an RUU on it to make it more HTC ish

I agree. Just look to see if the problems you are having disappear after you install the RUU, so maybe it will have been an issue with your current software configuration and you don't have to send the phone for repairs

[Q] Constant Reboots...

Hello everyone. I have not been too particularly active here mainly because I have had no real reason to post. I give thanks when needed, but don't really post. Well, now I am having an issue that I genuinely cannot figure out. I recently dropped my phone and the digitizer cracked big-time. When I went to replace it, the connector for the ribbon cable broke. So instead of buying a new logic board, I just decided to buy a new Evo. However, I couldn't afford the approx. $600 for the "without a contract" price. So I went to a local Sprint dealer in my town and bought a factory refurbished Evo. Here is where the problems start.
I have been having reboots constant with this phone. I knew that there were some issues with the Evo randomly rebooting, but I have never seen something like this. It happens about every minute or so. Sometimes sooner. Sometimes I luck out and it doesn't reboot for a few hours. I notice that it does not reboot at all while it is in recovery, which is a great thing. I have tried multiple different ROMs and each one does it. I am completely out of ideas. I don't necessarily want to take it back, mainly because returning it to stock would be a pain. However, it is looking like I have to. Does anyone have any idea? It is obvious that it is not a bootloop, because I am able to actually get into the launcher. However, within a minute, it reboots. Can old radios cause it to reboot like this? It did this even with stock unrooted.
If any information is needed, please let me know. I really want to get this working without returning.
Thanks
StompySan
EDIT: It would seem that flashing my Nandroid backup of stock rooted seems to stop the rebooting issues. Could the ROMs I am installing be conflicting with the radios, causing it to reboot?
If I were you, without unrooting, I would flash the RUU for your phone. Then flash the pc36img for Amon Ra.
Before all that, I'd also back up your SD Card, then reformat it, so you are basically starting from scratch. A good idea, before you restore everything to your SD Card, but after you flash Amon Ra, is to partition it for EXT3. ( http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?5669-GUIDE-TUTORIAL-Apps2SD-Guide&highlight=partition+sdcard )
A lot of the ROMS now will take advantage of that. Once that's done, you can restore your SD Card backup to your phone.
Then I'd make a nandroid of that stock/rooted ROM, so you can always go back to it if you need to. When I nandroid, I backup everything except cache.
Figure out which ROM you want, put it on your card along with DT A2SD and the kernel you want to use. Make sure it's a kernel for the type of ROM you want, either AOSP or Sense. Personally, I keep the best rated kernel for each on mine.
Go to Wipe in Recovery and wipe everything, EVERYTHING, except the SD Card, then flash your ROM, and in the same recovery session, flash DT A2SD.
Let it boot up and let it settle in before you do anything. For me, that means once the screen shuts itself off.
Back to recovery, wipe Cache and Dalvik-Cache, then flash your kernel, reboot and let it settle in again.
THEN setup your Google accounts and preferences.
For me, I'd go back to recovery and nandroid that setup, before you've restored your apps, and make another nandroid, so you have one of your ROM's Base.
Then, reboot and see if the problem is fixed. If it is, restore your apps and see how it goes. If it starts rebooting, you know it's in your apps, so you can go back to the nandroid you made and start form there, installing a few apps at a time
Thanks for your reply HipKat.
I followed your tutorial step-by-step. However, after flashing A2SD and rebooting, it bootlooped (not like what I was getting, but an actual no boot logo bootloop). I am assuming that the ROM that I flashed didn't like the A2SD. So I restarted the tutorial, skipping the part where you flash the A2SD script. It seems like it is doing great now! I have no clue what I was doing wrong. I was using CWM. Maybe that was the problem. Could it have not been wiping it properly?
Thanks again for the quick response!
1.There are some roms that provides a CPU speed of 1.2G. With those roms and setcpu installed manually by myself, my evo rebooted just like yours. I don't know why, too.
But after I wipe everything(as HipKat said) and flash other rom, my evo 4g works just fine.
2. Before flashing new roms, wipe everything is absolutely required, otherwise strange problems will keep coming out.
What I comprehend is that flash roms on phone is like upgrading OS on your computer, you can't run windows7 with XP's configuration, right?
Hey HipKat, I've noticed that you advise people to wipe everything but the SD card in Amon Ra. You may want to note that wiping battery stats is only good if you have a full battery and plan on calibrating properly. If you wipe battery stats at 70%, your phone won't charge past 70% (thinking that it's full) unless you use an sbc kernel. Just something to keep in mind.
I'm not knocking your directions, you help a lot of people out. It's just something to think about.

Maybe you should try some classic roms that don't require app2sd, like kings' kinged kingdom.
Before I partition my sd card, with shooter E3D and synerge, my evo also sometimes reboot, but not so frequently as yours.
And the CPU speed should be below 998MHz on my device (HW version:004)! Set your cpu frequency lower first, then try some other roms.

Are there any other ROMs I should try?

MIUI, for the win, man!
OK, I can pretty much confirm that it is a hardware problem. I have tried every ROM I can think of. It always seem to restart when it tries to turn on the Mobile access. If it is connected to WiFi, it will not reboot. The moment it is disconnected, it starts. However, I know it is not because of a bad radio flash. I have tried re-flashing the radios and it still doesn't work. I have restored it completely back to stock (while keeping S-Off, naturally) and it still does it. So, I am going to be returning it tomorrow. However, I have one real quick question. I know how to unroot, but I am not sure on how to achieve S-On with the Revolutionary root. Can you just flash the Unrevoked S-On zip with this root, or is there a different method? I wasn't able to find anything out on this.
Thanks again for all of your help. I really can't believe how quick people on here replied.
It isn't your hardware, I had a similar issue on my phone, it wouldn't go past the evo screen (for hours), I updated my firmware and it worked.
Clear caches, flash this rom (supersonic_4.24.651.1_odexed-signed2 google it), it will update your firmware, then flash the rom you want on top of it

You can flash S-On.zip directly from the recovery, I suggest you try out the method I mentioned in the previous post, before you go doing something drastic.

Nonono, it goes past the Evo screen. It goes past the standard boot logo. However, once you are in the lockscreen, and it tries to connect to 3G, it reboots. It is not a standard no boot logo bootloop.

If you're gonna trade it in, you don't need to unroot. Chances are no one will ever know, as long as you have a stock ROM on there.

Yeah. That's what I was reading. Plus, I rooted with Revolutionary, which doesn't have a method to enable S-On.
Last night I flashed the latest stock ROM. As soon as it booted up and got to the lockscreen, it restarted. I can't see it not being a hardware problem. I am going to return it today. Hopefully they don't notice that it is S-Off. Any suggestions on what to say if they do?
same issue
i have an old evo that is doing the same thing, i flashed the original ruu and it still does it. i just reported it lost.

[Q] Constant Rebooting Desire

Hi All,
I have a AMOLED Desire, S-Off with AlphaRev and running the latest LeeDroid ROM (including the latest radio etc)
The ROM had been fairly stable but I would get the occasional hot restart. I decided to reinstall the ROM and now have a major problem with the phone. Essentially it hot restarts within 30 seconds of the ROM installation completing (during the HTC setup). Sometimes the phone doesn't even get to the part where ROM loads (constantly reloads during just after the AlphaRev logo)
I have tried a different memory card but the result is the same (including full wipes) I have never overclocked the handset either.
Can anybody provide some other suggestions on what I can do to try and fix this!
Thanks,
Full wipe and try another rom, if that doesnt work try stock

Think I need to go down the RUU route, although I have no idea why a full wipe isn't fixing my issue. On the main page there is only a RUU link for up to HBOOT 0.80. I have 0.93 (via AlphaRev) Any pointers as to where this guide is please?

Be veeeeeerrryyyyy careful when you're using the RUU and you have rebooting problems. This is most likely a mainboard issue (overheating) and I'm pretty sure HTC cover it under warranty.
Before you run the RUU stick your phone in a plastic bag and put it in a freezer for 5-10 minutes (I **** you not) and then use the RUU, you'll reduce the likelihood of killing your phone completely!
The phone did get very warm during a boot loop so you could be on to something
The phone is no longer under warranty. It doesn't matter what ROM I use it restarts as the ROM loads. So my question was how do I apply the RUU with my current setup (unable to launch a ROM and AlphaRev HBOOT 93) and what do I have to get it run safely?
Try to load some CPU tuner and adjust your clock, maybe its too high for your phone to handle ?
It has been running ok for well over a year (except the one or two hot restarts) this seems like a very different problem and I presume I can't lower the CPU speed without a ROM actually starting?

1) Then try a new ROM, i also got freequently reset with Oxygen before, when I switch to Ginger and Aurora, never happen
2) You should be able to, try to download the "CPU tunner for root"
why not look at the log to see why its happening and what temps its reaching before it fails flashing an RUU
All ROMS do the same thing, reboot occurs shortly after entering my PIN (at the HTC white background screen).
Where would I find those logs? Remember that the ROM never boots to a usable state.

[Q] What's up with this phone?!

Hi guys. I recently purchased this phone from t mobile and so far it has been terrible. I cannot return it because I traveled to a different country and there is no T-Mobile here, so I am stuck.
Some issues I have are:
- extreme over heating while simply using the phone to browse the internet.
- battery draining extremely fast, lasting 4 hours Max (basic usage)
I am using the Android revolution rom on 5.1 lollipop and I thought it was supposed too fix these issues. Can someone please tell me how to fix these issues? I feel ripped off and wish I bought an s6 instead
I would say you have a faulty device... ?
Did you flash the new firmware aswell? Not just the rom?
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Free mobile app

I wasn't aware that you had to install the firmware as well. where can I get it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-red-t3097678
latest firmware. Should help fix issues. If not, it's possible it is device related.
Do you use greenify or any other similar app to hibernate apps when the screen is off? Do you have a lot of apps that sync automatically throughout the day? Have you removed bloatware and other apps that run in the background that you dont use by using titanium backup or romtoolbox?
Simple things like resolving any issues with the above mentioned items can help prolong battery life by a fair bit. Kernel tweaks also help to reduce overheating / cpu usage if you dont require you're phone to run at top capacity.
with overheating you need to keep in mind this is an all metal casing on the phone ... this means it will naturally absorb a lot of heat which isnt always a bad thing as it takes some of the strain away from the phones core. Obviously if its so warm it's hot to the touch then thats definately not good. But doing a full wipe / reset / re-flash etc is worth doing to get you back to basics and then if the issue remains, and you have seen to the above tweaks like using greenify / uninstalling apps you dont need / changing apps sync frequency etc, then it is probably hardward related.

I installed the android revolution rom which has no bloatware, I only have a few apps like facebook, snapchat, and twitter. The rest are never open. I have google syncing automatically. I am also currently in the process of installing the elitekernal that should help the CPU not overheat. Which kernal do you recommend? Can I use multiple kernals at one time? And yes, it eventually reaches the point where its not supposed to be that hot. I can understand if it get warm, but it really shouldn't get to the point where its hot to the touch. I really hope its not a hardware issue because then I'd have to be stuck with it.

as far as i know its a one kernel at a time kinda show.
I have only ever used the kernel that comes with the rom so far so cant recommend any others im afraid.
If after installing a different kernel you have the same issue and you have a set up like you've mentioned, it does sound like a hardware problem. With your setup it should very rarely get that hot unless you do a lot of flashing in a short space of time. My phone only ever gets hot to a point that i notice when i flash and set up a new rom, but it soon returns to normal.
good luck.

After installing the elitekernal my phone is stuck on the HTC logo.. it gets to the "optimizing apps" screen then restarts, and does it again.. bummer.

While you were still on stock, did you update the phone through Software Updates? You're likely on the originally released version of the firmware, which is probably 90% of your problems. Mismatched firmware/ROM isn't helping either.
Either return the device to stock to be able to take the OTA update, or S-Off ($25 through sunshine) and flash the latest developer edition firmware (2.8.617.4).

Bro. you really got to do some reading before you just start flashing stuff. Elite is NOT compatible with 5.1 roms.
if you are on 5.1, you HAVE to use the stock kernel . There are NO custom kernels for 5.1 yet.
Restore the boot.img from the ARHD rom. Either by restoring from the backup you made before you flashed the elite kernel, by dirty flashing ARHD, or by extracting boot.img from the ARHD zip and flashing it with fastboot.

I did not update the phones firmware. I was doing this whole thing in the first place because I thought updating to 5.1 android would update my firmware lol.
Right now I am trying to adb sideload the android revolution ROM but the phone says "Starting adb sideload feature" and gets stuck there. I have the correct drivers. Fastboot works fine, but I can only flash stock roms with fastboot. Do you have any link for the stock T-Mobile rom?

This will wipe your internal storage, so back it up first, but it's going to be the easiest way to get out of the mess you've gotten yourself in.

FYI-You need to have HTC Sync Manager installed on your computer for the RUU to run (or at least you USED to). If you get error 155 it's likely because it's not installed.
I fixed it by putting android revolution rom on my sd card then flashing it via twrp.
Now I have a simple question:
Does Lolipop 5.1 include all those fixes that HTC introduced? Or do I need to wait for the firmware for that? I am talking about the fixes like camera, overheating, battery, etc.

Firmware fixes those issues, not the rom...or at least you need the firmware for any of the fixes to actually work And using the latest ARHD with 1.32 firmware is likely making some of your issues worse.
There should be one firmware update for T-Mobile right now. But like I said, you'll have to return to stock system image to get the update. Either that or S-Off your phone which will make it possible to update to the 2.8 developer edition firmware which ARHD would run awesome on. The only downside to s-off and using developers firmware is if you use t-mobile wifi calling. For that to work, I think you need official t-mobile firmware.

Not to confuse the OP, but @jollywhitefoot what do you mean there are no custom roms for 5.1? Did you mean kernal? Another question, Is the new T-mobile update out already? I heard it comes out on the 17th.

Sorry. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I meant to write kernel instead of rom. There are no custom KERNELS for 5.1 roms yet.
I've fixed my original post to avoid future confusion...but hopefully we'll see a custom kernel for this device in a couple of weeks.
You probably know more about T-Mobile update schedule than I do. I'm on AT&T and they're the worst about pushing updates, so I don't even bother keeping up with them.
We probably won't have any custom kernels for a few more weeks. Nothing can happen until HTC releases source, which has been coming a couple of weeks to a month after the OTAs.
