This is my first time with Android operating system and i'm totally clueless from where to start.
I searched desire forums already but information is too much and i end creating up this thread.
Before root/flash and other things i need to clear up few things before i run into trouble. so please be easy.
1. I want to install Apps on micro-sd but can't find the way to do it.
2. How to find out My HTC desire is Branded or Unbranded. On a side note, When i turn on my Mobile I see Virgin Media Logo.
3. What are the benefits to root my phone.
4. If i root my phone will i lose the HTC sense UI? or i need to flash my phone to a custom based ROM?
5. What is Froyo? is it a new version of Android 2.2?
Last but not the least, can i root my device using Windows 7 64bit?
Thanks in advance.

1. You need A2SD (apps to sd). Only available if you root.
2. Your phone is branded so you need a gold card.
3. You get a choice of custom roms, you get A2SD, and you can use apps that require root access.
4. Nope you can use a rooted stock rom, or better still, a custom rom with sense in it.
5. Froyo is the name for the new Android OS. It's 2.2
And last but not least, yes you can! I used win7 64bit. Use the riskfree root guide on modaco. It's painless and very easy.

Are you sure my Phone is branded? because the box i have is white HTC one? and i don't see any virgin logo on it.
Plus i googled it and it came up with this information.
Go to Settings>About Phone>Software version and see what the FW version is - branded is x.xx.161.x, unbranded is x.xx.405.x
i checked mine and it says 405..so is it still branded?
If you have the virgin logo then I'm 99% sure you are branded and will need a goldcard.

this is getting quite confusing..
i just found this thread on XDA :/..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6227438&postcount=11
I haven't mentioned yet, that i'm in Pakistan and using other Network other than Virgin Media as we don't have that carrier. So basically its a sim free Phone. I mailed HTC regarding this.
any other way out to find about the branded and unbranded phone? other than just the logo ?
If you are going to root it, then try without the goldcard, if you get errors then you will know you need it.
Or simply play safe and make a gold card then root anyway. Being network sim unlocked has nothing to do with the phone being branded. I read that post you linked, and that said it was sim free but the sim caused the branding. if you are not using a virgin sim and have the virgin logo etc, I'd say you may well be branded.
It won't hurt to try either way!

Thanks, really appreciate your help.
I'd like to know one thing, as i read on few other sites that android 2.2 is due on Monday officially by HTC, so will i be able to flash my rom without any problem or i have to go through the goldcard and root option?
Its delayed for a few months sadly! Hey i just wanted to ask that are you having the time zone prob here in Pak..the phone showing GMT +6 instead of 5? and messing up all the threaded messages?
Im on Ufone btw!
I was wondering, you mentioned its ur first time with Android..why do you want to root it so soon?

yup getting the same +6gmt time..but messages are just fine. btw im using handcent sms/mms client.
i want to root it soon because i'm running out of memory and want to install apps on sd card.
Suppose if i don't root my device and leave it as it is running right now? is it possible to flash my device with the latest HTC froyo? ..
No sadly you cannot flash another rom to the phone without rooting it
Will have to wait for September for the OTA update.
Ive got a branded orange one but still not debranded or rooted it because initially there were problems with wifi not working and stuff like that..But the thing is once the OTA is here and you want to have that, you wont be able to the custom rom...you would have to revert to your original rom and then get it..
Here is the method for rooting it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
But I'd say otherwise. Maybe you should delve a bit deeper into the OS before rooting it because there is a chance to brick your phone if you make a mistake.
The solution that I am using for the low storage is that removing unnecessary app from the phone. For example you have installed google earth on the phone, The apk file would be 5.9mb but once installed it will expand to 13mb and eat up a large chunk of that space.
To check the memory consumed by each app go to:
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications
So this will enable you to have a rough idea of whats draining your memory.
Hope this helps!

That last bit was specific to Vodafone UK, the x.xx.161.x refers to their product code. the x.xx.405.x is the product code of SIM-free devices. If you phone is x.xx.405.x then you have an unbranded phone (for reference, Virgin's product code is x.xx.351.x)

Well thanks. ..such a relief.
than why i have virgin Media logo on it? its a bug? as mentioned by other XDA user.
Guys finally updated the firmware to the latest Generic one without unbranding and creating the Goldcard. everything went smoothly.
But still after update i see the virgin media logo and still im clueless from where does this come after updating to the latest firmware.
so this all clears up that i have the unbranded phone ? right?
In android Market i can't see the Paid apps. Even the Featured Apps page isn't showing. I'm getting No Matching Content in Android Market.
Other than this i can install the free apps without any problem. Anyone facing similar issue?
Hello everyone,
I bought HTC Desire few weeks ago - phone is fantastic but I have an issue: GPS signal is loosing in the city! On the open road everything work fine, GPS is very accurate and has fast response but in town... it's another story. As soon as I came between higher (10 stories) buildings my phone looses GPS signal.
What can be done? Is there any way to hack software so phone could use signals under 20%?
Thank you in advance,
Miljan
You could root the Desire and then try flashing a different radio version to improve GPS signal strength.
In the meantime, you can try the following:
1. Before you turn on the GPS, change to Airplane mode.
2. Start the GPS.
3. Start your nav app and let it get a signal.
4. Turn off Airplane mode.
Hey MasDroid,
thank you for this really fast reply!
I'll definitely try second method you suggested but either I'm software developer, I've never been in touch with android since now so I really don't know what is "different radio version"!? Can you point me to some site or forum where I can read about it?
Best regards,
Miljan

Here is a link which explains the rooting procedure in more detail:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
Radio rom - The radio software sits between windows mobile and the hardware. It controls the hardware based on what you want to do. There are all kinds of reports of better/worse battery life, connection strength (including GPS and Wi-Fi), sound quality reception when flashing different to radio versions. You can find out your stock radio rom version on your phone by going to Settings > Abount Phone > Software Information. Check the baseband version - this is your current radio version.
Some roms (like the new Froyo with Sense UI) require specific radios (32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04 or 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08), read the rom posts in the Desire Development section of the forum (http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628) for more info
A list or available radio's are available here:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
The roms that start with 4.x are generally based for Eclair 2.1 custom and generic roms, the ones that start with 5.x are for Froyo 2.2 roms.
Be careful is you are sim-locked (network-locked) to Orange - the newer Radio verions will network lock your phone after flashing (unless you flash back to stock Radio version or buy a network unlock code). There are reports that the newest Froyo Radio rom (32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08) does work on Orange even if sim-locked to their network.
Hope that helps you out!
Hey, thanks for this useful tips...
If I figure it out correctly, first I need to root (whatever this means and it's reversible) my phone and after that I can load Radio and Froyo... done in 4 hours I'm kiddin'
Procedure looks very complicated but with video it becames easy. My question is: can I restore factory defaults after any of these procedure(s)?
Thanks again!
Root gives you super user access to your phone, just a way to unlock it in order to flash roms and make further changes.
You create a Gold Card if your phone is branded first, then root, and flash a custom rom and radio, if necessary.
Yes, by flashing a rom, you are changing the device firmware. When you perform a hard reset/factory reset, your phone will resort back to factory settings of your current installed rom.
If you ever want to unroot your phone and to return to stock rom and radio, just flash the relevant RUU file.

Nice explanation this time, I figure it out
How can you see if phone is branded? Is there any app or it can be seen somewhere else?
Thanks again mate, you are really helping me with this tips.
Bye
Yes, again, Go to Settings > About Phone > Software version. Check what the firmware version is - branded is x.xx.161.x, unbranded is x.xx.405.x.
You can also tell if your phone is branded by looking for any network carrier logos on bootup (i.e. Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, etc) and pre-installed apps that have network branding.
If there is none and your firmware version is x.xx.405.x, then you will not need to create a Gold Card to bypass CID checks.

Don't all GPS lose signal when surrounded by high buildings? They rely on triangulation from satelites and if they can't see the sky ... well. My Tom Tom was terrible in London ....
Good point... i would imagine this would be the main cause to the OP's problem.

Even if Sprint had sent out an OTA update it SHOULDN'T have affected you because, having a rooted phone, you SHOULDN'T be accepting any OTA updates anyway.
I have a couple of questions for you though.
1. Do you use Google Voice?
2. If Yes, is your Sprint number integrated with Google Voice?
3. What baseband radio are you using?
4. What root method did you use? unrEVOked or Revolutionary?

Not sure if your ROM is sense based or not. If it is then you may want to try the Sprint ## codes in order to reset and calibrate your phones network signal. This MAY help.

Yea, the synergy-god mode is a sense rom. But I do remember some things not being compatible with that rom because of the god mode. So check the thread OP as well.

Would that include the ## codes? I thought the compatibility issues was limited to themes and mods. I only used that ROM for like 5 minutes before flashing something else. Didn't have some of the features I was needing and so I never actually looked any farther into it.
Can you send MMS? I would also make sure your mms server is mm.myboostmobile.com an didnt revert back to the sprint.
not wanting to wait for a software exploit that may never come, user Sonic2756 has stepped up and purchased an htc service card,or java card,to provide the vzw one community with a "right now!" s off option. make sure yuo thank him in this thread: Purchased a JavaCard for S_OFF
read this:
Sonic has recently decided to extend the offer to other devices for which a software exploit does not exist. *PLEASE post in his thread and ask him if he has the diag file for your particular MID before purchasing a credit
ALSO NOTE that this service is being offered to US customers only, unless other arrangenments are made with him prior.

you may purchase an s off credit here: http://htc.s26tech.com/
this method uses an official htc java card to turn off the phones security data. the card exists as a legitimate tool for cell phone shops and re-sellers,primarily for the purpose of removing the phones simlock.
since this method of s off is somewhat unusual, this thread is intended to help support folks that are unsure of the differences and similarities.
first and foremost, these are my words, sonic has not helped with these posts, tho i hope he will let me know if theres anything he wants changed. if any info you see here and use melts your phone into a little pile of aluminum goo,its not sonics fault, nor is it mine. use this info at your own risk.
in this first post,i thot a few FAQs needed to be put in one place,as they are being asked over and over again in the thread.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: what is s off?what does it do for me?
A: in a nutshell,s-off=security off. it removes all security checks and allows access to all partitions of the phone this means you can:
-change hboot
-change splash inage
-change radios
-flash unsigned files
-go backwards in firmware versions
-other things that maybe ill add later
Q: is this legit??
A:yes,it is. as mentioned above, the java card is a legitimate tool used by some large cell phone repair shops and re-sellers.
Q: how does this work?
A:the java card is plugged into a USB On The Go cable, and plugged into the phone. the java card contains htc-signed diagnostic files wich are used to clear security data. when the phone is booted to hboot with the java card plugged in,it finds the diagnostic file and jumps to a mode where the user can clear "s58" data. this removes any simlock, changes the CID to a generic "supercid",and most importantly, turns off the phones radio secure flag. hooray!
this not sonic, nor is this an htc one. it is a one X using the same method,it will give you a good idea what the process looks like:
HTC One X S-OFF
Q: what exactly is a java card?
A: simply,a java card is an sd card with a microprocessor in it. if someone wishes to provide a more detailed definition,id be happy to put it here. a bit more info here
Q: can we clone the java card so everyone can have s off?
A: yes. but its complicated, and the card to begin with is expensive. there have been some technical discussions about this in sonic's original thread. the simple answer is that it is not easy,or practical to clone the java card.
Q: why do i have to pay for this?? shouldnt s off be free?
A: if you have a prollem paying for this service, you are welcome to purchase your own java card and offer the service for free. as has been stated, the java card is expensive- upwards of $1000 depending how may credits are included.
further, even if a software exploit was available,it is good custom to donate to the devs who brought you the tool. remember,no one here owes you custom roms,s-off,etc. support your devs and what they bring you. in this case, sonic has purchased an expensive htc tool, shipping supplies, and has to invest a great deal of time getting your phone s-offed,packed up,and hauled back to the post office. not to mention the website he has set up for the service. there is nothing wrong with making his $$ back, and a bit extra for his time and efforts.
Q: is the card good forever?
A: NO! the java card has a limited number of uses. he has stated he can sell about 250 s off services, and do 10 developer phones for free. after those credist are gone, you are SOL unless a new exploit is found,or there is enuff interest for sonic to buy a second card.
Q: how do i know how many credits are left?
A:Sonic's website shows the number of avaiable spots left, right above the quantity select/add to cart,in the "product description". simply go to the website, then click the htc one picture.
Q: how do i use this service?
A:go to his website and purchase an s off service. http://htc.s26tech.com/
Q: where do i send my phone?
A: his address is on his website: http://htc.s26tech.com/about/
Q: if im allready unlocked, should i still get s off?
A: in my opinion, yes. s off is better. it allows more options to recover soft-bricked devices, and allows access to all partitions. an s on phone is still doing plenty of security checks. it also allows a permantly installed recovery to install the boot image. the downside is that your phone WILL let you brick it if your not careful. know what your flashing and why. double check md5 sums to verify the integrity of your downloads. a corrupt bootloader ot radio can damage your phone, potentially unrecoverably. if you just asked "what is an md5sum?" stop and google it now. there are numerous md5summers avaialable for free on the vast interweb, download one and start using it.
Q: if im allready unlocked and running a custom rom and recovery,do i need to take any precautions?
A: yes. the diag file is designed to work on stock software and firmware. i would strongly recomend to:
-restore a bone stock nandroid,or flash a bone stock rom
-reflash your stock recovery
-reflash your stock boot image if you were running a custom kernel
-select 'factory reset' option from hboot
Q: will this wipe my phone?
A: yes it will. so back up your sd card to the pc,and be prepaired to have to re-set everything up when you get it back.
Q: does my phone need to be active?
A: no it does not.
Q: do you need my sim card?
A: no he does not.
Q: what is the turn around time?
A: again, these are my words. from the thread,5-7 days. please remember sonic has real life activities to attend to,so you may want to wait until the initial wave has subsided. if he has alot of phones to do,it may take him longer.
Q: im a tight ass,can i use cheaper shipping?
A: yes,you can. the initial shipping is picked and paid for by you. be as tight as you want. the return shipping is priority mail with $600 worth of isurance. if you have such faith in the united states post office, and humanity that you do not feel this is needed, then you can chose the cheaper return shipping option sonic has provided.
Q: how do i activate a spare phone while mine is away?
A:it depends on the phone. if you have another 4g vzw phone, you can simply swap over your active sim. if the sim is larger in the spare phone, adapters do exist for extremely cheap on ebay and amazon. alternately, you can call vzw or go to their website to activate an older 3g device.
Q: how do i activate my phone when it comes back?
A: like you normally would. s off by itself does not change anything about the phone or how it oporates. its what you do afterward/modify that can have an impact on "normal" operation. so if you moved your sim into another phone, just move it back. if you mailed your phone directly to sonic with the protective film still on it,then take everything out of the box and activate just like you would if it had just come from vzw.
Q: will i be able to unlock the bootloader if my phone is s off?
A: yes. when the phone comes back,it will have "supercid". this ignores the mid(model id) check that htcdev does on the phone, and will let you get a token and unlock.
Q: are there advantages to unlocking the bootloader?
A: you have a couple extra fastboot commands you can use:
fastboot flash partition imagename.img
and
fastboot boot imagename.img
these commands are useful to install recovery, and boot images into phone memory. with fastboot bootfor example, you can temporarily launch recovery on the phone to flash su if you dont want to permantly install it.
Q: so do i NEED to unlock the bootloader to install recovery?
A: no,you do not. you can install recoveries and all other partitions as zip files. more info on that later.
Q: does superCID give you any benefits?
A: on a gsm device where you have multiple carrier and regional firmwares that will work, supercid is of value. with a device on vzw,you can only use vzw ruus anyway since this is a unique cdma/lte device. further, accepting an OTA with supercid could leave you unrecoverably bricked, plus it may interfer some some verizon functions(i remember inc 4g users having issue, but the details escape me)
IMO,you should change your CID back to stock afterward. if you do not know your stock CID,you should check it prior to sending off your device. you can find it with fastboot getvar all or fastboot getvar cid. if you wish to "debrand" your phone, you can always change it to a somewhat universal HTC__001 (2 underscores)
Q: is my cid unique to my particulare phone?
A: no,it is not. it is unique to a carrier or region.
Q: how do i change my cid back to stock?
A: with this fastboot command:
fastboot oem writecid xxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxxx is your stock cid)
Q: why is my cid always present on the hboot screen?
A: i dont know htc's logic, but this is simply what the phone does while its s off. it will display whatever your cid is,and is not dependent of your bootloader being locked or unlocked.
Q: what about the TAMPERED and unlocked/relocked badges?
A: if your phone was unlocked when you sent it in, youll get it back factory fresh locked. the tampered badge,i am unsure of at this time, and will update as more info is obtained.
if you sent in a brand new phone,it obviously wont be different(with exception of s off)
one of the big advantages of s off,is that the tampered flag is not triggered by adding a custom recovery or kernel, and since s off removes the various write protections that exist,it is posible to reset either flag. more info on the lock status flag here
Q: will an OTA change my s-off or lock status?
A: it is possible. altho,it is highly unlikely since turning the radio secure flags on via an OTA would also do so on legitimate test phones.
however...
it really is not reccomended that you try and take an OTA while rooted. a custom recovery is unable to install HTC's OTA pacakage, and attempting to do so ca jam you up horribly. taking an OTA with bloat and system files remove will typicaly result in failure, and taking an OTA with supercid could lead to a processor "do not boot" mode, wich is very effectively a hard brick only recoverable via jtag. or a new device.
the best way to update a rooted device is to update the rom with a recovery-flashable zip file, and the firmware extracted from the OTA package. this will update you just like taking the OTA. there is nothing magical about over the air updates. please, just do it manually. leave the OTAs for the stock crowd.
last and not least!
Q: im convinced! what do i do once i get back my stock,s-off phone?
A: please see post 2

Yes but if the devs found a way to share java card over internet mybe will be more ease. You Pay on the guy with the java gard and you use one time the java over internet from home. This will be really good solution if they found a way to do that

Hello devs.. I have an HTC one Verizon and I just switched to straight talk. well while I am at it, I want to unlock completely and install a custom ROM get rid of verizons crap.. I am out of practice really. I used to have all the HTC incredibles, the tilt 2. It was so easy for me to follow how to unlock and cwm and root those phones.
I just cannot grasp how to do all that with this phone. I would like to know or be pointed to the right direction or maybe get some personal walkthroughs to get s-off, unlocked bootloader, obtain root.
everywhere I have been looking, I just don't understand. I have already ported my sim and number from straight talk and did a factory reset. I obviously have the most current updates. I really would like some help otherwise im afraid im going to brick my phone or be forced to keep the Verizon factory.
Android is 5.0.2
Sense is 6.0
6.55 is SDK API level
please help.. I will be avail all day tomorrow to get this all done.
Thank you

Do a google search for "sunshine HTC One m7 Verizon". That is the ONLY way to s-off the phone if you have the newest software already. After that, you can use fastboot to install recovery just like you would have in the old days of your old devices. Look up santod's roms. He has a recovery build you can use with a download link. I also recommend his roms themselves as well. He is very responsive if you follow his instructions and puts out high quality work. Good luck.

Going to run into issues with APN and Sim Card
That is way no one has responded to his request

Yeah, I was just answering his question about how to unlock and rom. I don't know anything about using it on straight talk. I'd imagine it might work ok, but he's probably not going to have all the bands for full GSM support. Regardless, I think a mod should probably move this out of development section.

well I still have Verizon active... I can just swap sim cards for now then do all the programming then swap back? straight uses same towers and bands as Verizon... same sims just different numbers. I don't see why there would be that big of an issue? and sorry if I posted in the wrong forum category
