So, you've seen those new Sense 3.0 ROMs floating around, but haven't had an opportunity to try them yet? Well, I've developed a simplified method for getting you rolling with Virtuous Unity 1.31. Of course, after you have installed the DZ Hboot, you can install any Sense 3.0 ROM you wish, even though this guide is specifically for Unity.
This guide will show you how to install the DZ Hboot, and the Virtuous Unity ROM, with out using adb or a computer. The entire process is done on the phone.
First, let me thank the Virtuous dev team responsible for this gem of a ROM. Excellent work, and we tip our hats.
Now, this installation requires the following:
A rooted G2 with Clockwork Recovery 3.0.2.4.
Two MicroSD cards.
Optional: WiFi access, Tapatalk and Opera Mobile, installed internally. Opera makes downloading the required files much more reliable, and it can be easier using TT to browse this page.
The first thing you should do is stop by www.VirtuousRom.com, and check things out there. The Unity ROM and the OC frequency patch come from their website, and I firmly believe in giving credit where it is due.
Once you are ready to begin, download Unity 1.31 from this link, preferably via WiFi. This beast is about 400MBs, so be you may not want to deal with cellular speeds. You can also find this ROM on RomManager, if you prefer, under the Virtuous tab.
http://www.multiupload.com/TS4IAWJVMZ
Once that has finished, you should download the OC Frequency patch. You may not need it, but you definitely want to have it already downloaded if it is needed.
http://unity.flemmard.net/patches/virtuous_unity-ocfreq-patch.zip
You will also want to download a good radio to use, since the DZ Hboot will overwrite your current radio. This is the most current compatible radio:
http://www.mediafire.com/?r1tal256p11uzyz
Once you have finished downloading these files, use a file manager (ES File Manager or Astro, etc) to check the SDCard root (/sdcard/) to make sure there is no file named PC10IMG.zip located there. I'll explain why shortly. After you have confirmed this, shut off your phone, remove the battery, remove the SDCard, and insert the second card. Replace the battery, and reboot.
After the phone is running again, you need to download this file: http://db.tt/z3nb1hhN If the link stops working, please PM me so I can upload the file to an alternative service, as this is from my personal Dropbox.
When the download finishes, use a file manager, and find /download/DZHboot_PC10IMG.zip. Copy/paste it to the root of your SDCard, and then rename it PC10IMG.zip.
A quick word about PC10IMG.zip: this file, when present on the root of your SDCard, will automatically be read by your bootloader. We want this to update your HBoot. However, the reason we DO NOT want a PC10IMG on the first card is because this file also prevents the bootloader from being able to enter recovery. This is why this method requires two cards. One to flash the HBoot, and one to enter recovery to flash a ROM. Once the HBoot flashes, it will wipe your phone, so you must have a ROM or backup to get it working again.
Reboot your phone into bootloader. If you have 3/4 way reboot, simply hold the power button while the phone is on, select reboot/restart, and select bootloader. If you do not have this feature, shut the phone off, then hold volume down+camera key, then press power. The bootloader will scan for updates, and will then prompt you if you wish to apply the update. Press volume up to accept this prompt. Do not turn the phone off or remove the battery while this process is engaged! When it is complete, you will be prompted to reboot the phone. Do so. You will notice that your phone is "stuck" at the white HTC bootsplash, even if you have flashed a different splash image. This is normal.
Remove the battery. Remove the SDCard, and insert the first card. Boot into the bootloader, and then volume-down to recovery, and press power. While the phone has technically been "wiped", there is the possibility of remaining bits of info in the memory, so it is good practice to perform a complete wipe. Scroll down to "mounts and storage", and select the following options: "format /cache, format /data, and format /system." DO NOT format /sdcard!!!
Now press the back key to return to the main screen, and select "install a .zip from SDCard". You can find Virtuous Unity in the /download folder if you downloaded from your web browser, or /clockworkmod/downloads/ if you used RomManager. Select the Unity zip file, and install it. Once this is done, press the back key to the main menu, select "reboot device".
Once the G2 has started up, you may experience lockups. This is a known bug with the G2 related to overclocking. If it happens, reboot into bootloader, enter the recovery, and flash /download/virtuous_unity-ocfreq-patch.zip. This should fix the problem!
Last step: open a file manager, and find the radio file you downloaded earlier. It should be in /download, and is a .zip named Vision Radio 12.56.60.25 26.10.04.03 PC10IMG.zip. Copy/Paste to the root of your SDCard (which we can do now that the phone is working again!) And then rename it PC10IMG.zip Reboot one last time into bootloader, and again press volume up to accept the update. When it is done, reboot the phone as prompted. Delete the PC10IMG.zip files from the root of each SDCard, and you are done! Enjoy!
Hope you find this helpful!
EDIT: Updated the DB link to the Hboot.
EDIT AGAIN: Yet another replacement DB link for the HBoot. I have a friend who has offered to host this file on his own server, I just haven't gotten the chance to upload it yet. I'll be replacing this link with a permanent one soon.

Isn't this guide for the G2 only? Might be a good idea to mention that before DZ users needlessly starting to flash the hboot.

Hey, I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong thread.
I just ran across something. I tried flashing the PC10IMG, but someone told me it should reboot twice and I should have the stock splash screen. Didn't go that way... Looks like only the Bootloader changed, and I can now flash the Virtuous Unity ROMS so yea. First of all does anyone know what's wrong?
Also I'm just guessing that the flashing process was interrupted before it could get to the splash and radio partitions or something, and I need to reflash HBOOT, Could flashing the same Hboot brick your device?
Thanks in advance!

Same Question here i want to play with Sense but how i go back to the G2 bootloader?
Does the dz hboot effect performance (aosp)? When more memory is added to the rom memory does it effect your ram? And does the dz hboot effect tmobile in any way? I want to run the new sense roms but not at a lose of performance to any other roms..thank you. Oh and thanks button pressed, I read other posts and this guide is very easy to understand and user friendly.

There will be no lose in performance your total RAM will not be affected. The only difference is that your data partiton (were market apps go) will be smaller and the system partiton (where the Rom goes) will be bigger.
It won't affect the way your device works, things like WiFi calling will still work.

If I have do a backup through clockwork recovery and then switch to the DZ hboot, will I be able to restore that backup that I made on the G2 hboot?
Great guide, will eventually do it because I also want to try those sweet sense 3.0 roms out there, without the use of adb.
But with the dzhboot will I be able to flash cm7 back again, or the sense 2.X roms?

The easy way would be to use ROM manager, open rom manager, do "backup of current rom" first to back up this working rom in case you want to revert after flashing a new rom, next go to "download Rom" and choose a new rom to download (there are only currently three roms offered in rom manager CyanogenMod,Virtuous and CyanogenMod Nightlies but I dont recommend Nightlies for noobs could have lots of bugs) it will ask if you want to install it, remember to select wipe data/cache any time you switch roms, and let it install the rom.
Other wise you will have to download a rom install it to the root of your sd card, open ROM manager, select boot into recovery, wipe data, wipe cache, select install zip from sd, select choose zip from sd, choose the rom zip you installed and apply, when done reboot and finish. Remeber in either case do a backup in rom manager first.
Thank you so much, do you happen to know where i can find a sense 2.2 rom??

Anytime you install a fresh rom, it starts fresh, you can use the app titanium backup to make a backup of your apps, and info and reinstall them onto diffrent roms. I would suggest to start reading the diffrent threads in this form and start learning how you use your new rooted phone and all the options you now have. Remember there are some roms and radios you dont want to intall on your phone, like the ones made for the desire z. Also might want to check out gfree for your phone. That will give you radio s-off and a true permroot, but you have to use adb to do this. It will also unlock the carrier and carrier id for the phone(so you can use other carrier sim cards). Here is another video on how to set up adb on your computer and the driver needed for your phone.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
Remember dont do anything unless your sure you understand the directions. Keep reading and searching, this is what is gonna help you understand diffrent aspects of modifying your phone, another good resource is youtube, look up videos on how to do diffrent things, have fun.
Alright thanks

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Do you mean Hboot or recovery? If you are in hboot then toggle down to recovery and from there go to restore and your image should be there...
The "no image" is in HBOOT, and it is looking for any one of three specific files that would be on the root of the SD card. Those would be RUU files, radio files, or something that you put there to update something like that. If they are not there, which unless you are flashing them, then this message is normal.
Otherwise those files shouldn't just sit on your SD card, cause anytime you'd boot into HBOOT, it would want to load them each time.
Make sure you put this image file on the Root of the SD card, if its in a folder HBOOT wont find it.

Glad to hear your up and running!
I have been following closely the G2 rom development threads and up to now everything has gone well.
If you want to install Virtous new roms you must install the new PC101.img first.
As didnt want to setup a ADB enabled PC again, I just followed these steps.
1-Ensure you already have a 4 way reboot rom (Recovery, hot restart, restart, and bootloader).
2-Download the new PC101.img to the root dir of your minisd card. Be prepared with a PC and minisd card reader. Or prepare another sdcard with any rom.
3-Reboot phone into bootloader. Be sure the PC101,img is on the minisd installed on your phone.
4-You will be in the bootload-reset-etc menu (the white menu). Select bootload.
This will flash your phone with the new PC101.img. You will see a small vertical line filling up as it flashes.
5-When finished, it will prompt you to reboot your phone. Do so.
6-You will see the green HTC logo, just let it there for 3 minutes and dont panic, you still have to install a rom. Pull battery.
7-Now swap the minisdcard with the card that contains the rom (Unity works great). Install battery and push the on button while pressing volume down to go to Clockwork recovery mode.
8-Install rom. No need to wipe as the new PC101.img formatted the internal 4Gb ram.
Thats it, hope it works.Worked for me.
I thought the file had to be pc10img.zip?

i have an evo 4g with cm 7.2 rom and tiamat sbc kernel. i wanted the original kernel so i downloaded it from this site last night and unzipped it using clockworkmod. now my phone is stuck on the htc evo 4g screen. i am new and still am unfamiliar with most of this stuff but can someone please help?

not sure if that all matters. i tried restore in clockwork recovery and it didnt change anything....still stuck.
CWM blows. Wipe cache and dalvik and flash another kernel.
thanks for the reply.

i did wipe the dalvik cache. is that enough? then i tried unzipping the tiamat sbc kernel and it was still stuck.
btw....is there a better rom that supports wimax???
If possible, upgrade to a Ra based recovery. That'll make the wiping and flashing easier on your part, as far as ROM choice, I'll give you sense.

Flashing recoveries for dummies:
STEP 1: Download recovery of choice (smelkusmod ra recovery)
STEP 2: Rename the zip to "PC36IMG.zip" and move to root of the SD card
STEP 3: Boot to bootloader and follow the prompts to update recovery
STEP 4: reboot to recovery
STEP 5: Prosper!!
(If this doesn't go to plan, unzip the pc36img and check the txt file and change the mainver to 1.00.000.0, zip the file again, and repeat from the beginning)
Hope this does the trick

PM me and I'll help you sort this out once and for all when I get some free time.
Try this. Download the Smelkus recovery and place it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). Rename the file PC36IMG.zip (make sure you don't have an extra .zip extension on the end or it won't work). Once this is done, turn the phone OFF and unplug your phone from your computer. Once the phone is OFF, hold down the volume DOWN button, then press the power button and wait for the HBOOT screen to load. If everything works as it should, you'll get a prompt asking you if you want to update. Use the appropriate keys to select YES, then wait for the update to load. When you go into HBOOT, as part of its loading process, it looks for a file on the SD card named PC36IMG.zip and when it finds it, will ask if you want to update. Also, make sure you don't have more than one file on your SD card named PC36IMG.zip, or you'll have issues. Once you've got the recovery loaded, you can re-namethe file on your SD card something like PC36IMG1.zip, to avoid any issues should you have to use HBOOT to install another PC36IMG.zip file down the road.
That's what I did but I did it all from my phone. Does that matter?

That's what I'm telling you to do. You can actually download the PC36IMG to your phone, but you'll have to move it to the root of your SD card using something like Astro File Manager. That's why most instructions say to hook your phone up to a PC and download the PC36IMG to the root of the SD card.
When you press the volume down button and power button, what happens?

i switched from mimicry to trickdroid recently and i cant get past the white htc screen. i already posted about this and ive been getting help but i noticed that it was in a ONE S section and so im guessing theres going to be some problems later. anyway, i already flashed boot.img and everything. nothing seems to work. my phones been turning off randomly lately as well. what should i do? un-root and re-root? or flash the PC10IMG.zip? any help would be appreciated. i dont NEED trickdroid but i hear its one of the best right now. i loved mimicry but the battery would go from 100 to 20, back up to 60? something was off.
Problem flashing trickdroid may be you have the wrong bootloader, you will need the desire z one as it has a larger system partition required for that ROM. You shouldn't need to fastboot flash a kernel unless you used the HTC dev bootloader method to gain root. If you rooted properly with gfree than you can just flash the new bootloader via fastboot, see here for more details
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27796375
If you want see post 30 in that thread for a pc10img.zip that may be easier for you but fastboot is always safer.
As for the issues with the battery I doubt its mimicry, and I also doubt you will have a faster phone with trick droid, maybe prettier if you want sense though.

If you want see post 30 in that thread for a pc10img.zip that may be easier for you but fastboot is always safer.

Okay so i switched my hboot to the DZ one and its working! i just have one more question, i had to partition my sd card and enable swap to make it run smoother. so i did that, flashed cwm, went to partition sd, 128, 256, and it was done. then i noticed everything on my sd card was gone and new folders appeared. it seemed more organized but everything was gone. was this supposed to happen?
Yeah that will happen, think of a format as a super wipe. If you use 4ext recovery you may be able to add/change swap or ext partition but always backup first

okay, thank you so much. you actually got it to work for me. now im having trouble with the tweaks haha. i dont really need tweaks anyways. at first i flashed the tweaks and it got stuck at the htc desire HD screen. so i superwiped, and flashed the trickdroid rom again. do i have to partition sd and run swap_enabler script again? or will i never have to run it again because i already did it once.
Don't need to repartition sd card, it will stay as is untill you reformat it. I don't use trick droid but if it doesn't have swap built in by defult you need to run the enable script at any reflash
